  • Installing my old dual dash cam in the Yaris, hardwired with fuse-taps, all cabling hidden, and modes (driving/parking) ignition-switched. The cabin fusebox in the Yaris is annoying so I had to use other tricks.

    The cabling shown uses fuse taps and a proprietary power supply. You will need:
    * Dash cam & power supply, see above
    * Along with cables to suit.
    * Fuse tap(s), make sure you get the right size. The Yaris uses low profile minis, and I used a regular mini for my live power hack. Amazon links ~

    * Additional fuse(s) to suit, ~5 A is about right
    * Voltmeter
    * Tools to get behind trim. Screwdriver set.

    Your comprehensive and thoughtful approach to product reviews, installations, and repairs is certainly praiseworthy. The casual way you emphasize the value of workmanship (even when attending to the smallest details) is reflective of a mindset that can and should be applied to every project regardless of size. I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos!

    what is surprising is that even in this decade car manufacturers dont provide easy wire ports preinstalled near the common spots for dash cams.

    So what is your problem with the Yaris ? I drive a Yaris and a Lexus, and I'm happy to drive either.
    Our Yaris is back into the dealers this morning to sort out a problem with the Nextbase Dashcam.
    It seems like someone forgot to put in a permanent live.

    Thank you for taking the time to create these video explanations. Given your clear mastery of the topic, my confidence is bolstered that I chose the same dash cam for my car. I've watched several of your videos to further bolster my confidence to install it. But I'm wondering about an external battery.
    1.) Could a battery used by off-grid/camper van enthusiasts be a good choice to run a dash cam, e.g., the Yeti or the Jackery? Or is the problem that the external battery would not know when to engage Parking Mode?
    2.) CURIOUS: How does the dash cam know when to engage Parking Mode if it is powered from an external battery--the way marketed by retailers, e.g., the Viofo A129 Pro Duo plugged into the Cellink Neo? Or is that functionality lost with the Cellink Neo and the like, which is why you opt for the internal wiring approach?

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to integrate both, the ACC wiring is just a switch, and you would wire up the red power draw to your secondary battery, which itself would be wired up to a charger which itself only gets power from an ignition circuit. The secondary battery would want to be a powerbank style, li-ion, capable of accepting fast charge.

    my dashcam is hardwired to my 2019 Yaris, recently it hasn't been powering up, i suspect the it's unplugged, do you know how I can check it?

  • @PDS1107

    Great video as usual. I have a Yaris - it's a bit newer than your one, it's 2 years old. It's a hybrid. The fuse box is in the same place but mine has a cover underneath the glove box protecting it from any stray feet etc. I recently bought the Viofo Plus Duo and only yesterday decided I should check it out first by plugging it into my Mac to test everything works before I embark on the install (as per your excellent detailed instructions). Unfortunately, the rear camera doesn't seem to be working. I've contacted Viofo and now awaiting their response.
    I have since discovered that I am not the only one to have problems with the rear camera. A few google searches showed others also had similar issues. From this research, I am wondering if the 6m micro USB cable from the front to the rear is faulty.
    I am pleased you are doing the install on a Yaris because I have been a little apprehensive about doing it myself. Anyhow, there is nothing I can do just yet until the issue with the rear camera is sorted.

      See my review of the Plus Duo th-cam.com/video/0VgWKLdtAcA/w-d-xo.html - also had problems with the rear cam. Try updating its firmware from the Viofo site, including the rear cam separate flash. (But mine is still giving me problems). When testing it use USB power adapter not computer.

      @PDS1107 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CraigsDIY Viofo site says new firmware will be released soon for the Plus Duo. That was as of 16th Dec 20. It's running V1.0 at the moment. There's an update available for the 16GB EMMC version to V1.1. I guess that means the version that has a built in SD card? I've been fiddling around with this now for hours trying all sorts of things/cables etc but still nothing from the rear cam........I give up!

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's an update now to what they call 1.4. No idea what happened to 1.1-1.3... Only references to a weird resolution of reduced vertical px, like the opposite of the 1600p mode, and unspecified 'bug fixes'. Haven't experimented with it yet.

    • @PDS1107
      @PDS1107 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CraigsDIY I've already returned mine for a hopefully fully functional replacement. The UK seller said sometimes the front to rear cable can get damaged upon installation in the vehicle. I haven't got as far as installing it anywhere yet. I've only tested it in my house. From reading through the forum it seems I'm definitely not alone in having problems with the rear camera. www.viofo.com/community/index.php

    • @PDS1107
      @PDS1107 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've had a replacement cam sent to me a while ago. I've checked it out and everything seems fine with this one. I haven't gotten around to installing it yet. Partly because the English winter weather (cold, rain, wind and snow etc) and partly because of being in lockdown. The car has been sat on the drive most of the time since December so I thought what's the point installing it if the car isn't going anywhere? Another reason I haven't done it is because, well quite frankly I'm worried I'm going to make a complete mess of it! I've contacted a local company who said they'd install it for me for around £80 so that might give me more of an incentive to attempt it myself........we'll see.......

    What should I do if I don't want to use parking mode but still want to hardwire to make the cables tidier? I have 3 wire hardwire cables, and wiring yellow didn't turn on the camera. Unless I connect the red one too to the ACC fuse camera doesn't turn on.

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wire it properly. The parking mode is just a feature that can be turned off/on. If you really want to hard disable it, then wire both yellow & red to the same ACC/ignition circuit. But the hardwire kit in this case is superfluous, you might just hardwire in a cheap USB (5 V) adaptor to same.
