- In this video I will show you how to install the latest Mac OS Sonoma on a 2012 iMac
Step one Download OCLP for Mac
dortania.github.io/OpenCore-L...
Follow along with this video to finish the install.
**USE CAUTION**
Honestly Sonoma runs like crap on this particular machine iMac 2012, your results may vary but Sonoma really pushes the limits of your graphics card, this 2012 on has a 512Mb graphics card and it idles at about 75% capacity at all times and Target display mode does not work.
I also installed it on my 2013 iMac and it did fare a little better but it has a 4GB graphics card and Sonoma was running a fair amount of it at all times.
Big Thanks to @mrmacintosh and OCLP Team!!

How to download Mac OS Sonoma
I've been running OCLP and Sonoma on my late 2012 27" iMac i7 quad core 3.4 24gb ram and 512 ssd GTX 675MX 1GB runs like a dream, and because OCLP updates too the Apple updates all go on without any issues. TBF I never thought I'd still be using this old Mac in 2023 with all the latest software but it just does it, saves me a fortune on the new apple kit. With a limited budget for future upgrades this OCLP software is absolutely brilliant. If this Mac ever breaks I would probably buy another same spec 2nd hand and do the same again.
Fantastic! Yeah my 2012 is the low end model and does not run Sonoma very well. If it had a better gfx card I might run with it. But lack of TDM support is kind of a deal breaker for me.
Great info!! I wish the back ground music wasn't so loud
Yeah sorry about that. I try to keep it low low, but I guess not low enough.
Thanks for the video. I have a 2012 iMac dead-ended at High Sierra, which also means all my apps are dead-ended. Some websites don't function well or at all on the highest version of Safari I can run. -- I retired in 2018, so this isn't interfering with my livelihood. But it's a pain. So my current plan is to get a Mac Mini M2 and monitor over the Thanksgiving holiday. Your revelation of the poor performance of your 2012 iMac with OCLP confirms my choice for one final new desktop computer. I do have a newer Air, but the smaller screen and touchpad are not convenient for some of the things I still do on a computer.
If you are up for it Ventura still functions great on my 2012, the issue is the graphics card, 512mb, if you have a better card Sonoma should function fine. But yeah I am noticing they are coming to the end of their use as many apps although they work they are not designed to run on these older machines and the hardware is having trouble keeping up. Cheers mate. The M2s are sweet and you can use the 2012 as a monitor using airplay on Ventura and OCLP
Thank you really helpful advice - Value your final opinion.
Thanks for watching, yeah I was disappointed by the way it ran on the 2012. On the 2013 however it ran better but with no support for TDM the fancy wallpapers are not worth the switch. Thanks for subscribing!
hi thanks for the video, very informative. please what do i do if OpenCore doesnt launch auto matically after installation ?
You can launch it from the applications folder. But the new version of OCLP should do everything needed if it’s a fresh install.
Thank you for the informative video. I have a 2013 500GB 21.5” iMac and I want to get OCLP to get the MacOS Sanoma. I was asking someone on if they thought I should do it, and they said updating to Sanoma could bog down the computer a lot, making miserably slow. The person suggested sticking with what I have but I would love to not see the vintage icons etc. What are your thoughts on this? Do you suspect it could slow down the computer? If I do it and it does slow it down is it possible to uninstall and it’ll stop being slow? Idk what other questions to ask but you get the general idea.
Yeah it seemed to run better on my 2013 than the 2012, really it comes down to the GFX card. What card does yours have? You can also install Ventura. Which runs great on both of my machines.
@@BadspadeLive I have the NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 1 GB (and I realized the storage is 1TB not 500GB).
@@arya.s.o. is it a HDD or SSD? That will make a difference. I would say in this case if it’s a HDD with 1GB GFX card I would recommend Ventura. The SSD really makes a huge difference. I had a 512mb card on the 2013 and it was a slug on Sonoma but runs Ventura great.
@@BadspadeLive in my macs system report, the Device name says “APPLE HDD” and a code, I assume this means it’s HDD?
@aoreoojha829 yeah most likely it’s a regular HDD
Dumb question, I’m new to this😅 so do I buy the ssd 1st and then download sonoma or do I download sonoma 1st
Do you need to install and SSD? You can create the installer with a usb stick or an external SSD, and then install it to the internal drive.
I got a late 2013 iMac 21.5 it has an Intel i5 processor and 16 gigs of ram with a Fusion Drive it currently runs Mac OS Catalina as this was the last supported version for this model. I was curious if I can use this attempt to upgrade to Mac OS Sonoma with out having to upgrade any internals in the iMac as I don’t really want to spend any more money on this Mac being I just want a temporary solution until I’m able to finally save up enough money to buy a new Mac.
You can use OCLP to upgrade to Sonoma. But it won’t support TDM and if the graphics card is low it will not run that well.
hi i am from barbados i just installed sanoma on mz imac but the icon at the top i am not seeing can zou help
Icon at the top? I’m sorry I don’t know what you mean, can you reference a time stamp?
hi! I'm currently on iMac 2012 21' , Mine is not on core i5, but on 8-core i7, 16 ram, 1tb ssd. Currently on Catalina
What may be the most stable os for me? i use FCPX, logic pro and skype on daily basis, so proper work of this programmes are crucial ,
What can you advise?
I was running Ventura on my 2012, only because Sonoma does not support TDM and it seemed to run sluggish with my 512mb GFX card. Ventura however ran super smooth with no issues. I was running all Adobe suite as well as CapCut. But I have since sold that machine and still have my 2013 running great on Ventura.
Would you recommend sticking with Monterey or Ventura instead?
I personally love Ventura it runs great on these older iMacs and it’s a more polished OS.
i have an iMac A1311 21.5" from 2011 with i5 quad core 8GB Ram. after installing sonoma, my Bluetooth does not remain ON, after i turn it ON, it turns off automatically after 5 seconds. any help?
Yeah the 2011 seem to have issues with Sonoma. I would consult the OCLP website for any and all compatibility issues. Sonoma seems to be a different animal.
@@BadspadeLive ok i found out the solution, i reset the NVRAM settings and then Bluetooth started working perfectly.
ok i found out the solution, i reset the NVRAM settings and then Bluetooth started working perfectly.
@DarkForce1 glad to hear it, each system is different. Thank you for the info for the community
With sonoma 14.4 it will get stuck I started Thursday today Sunday I gave up hours ago I am downloading Ventura now because you said that's where our iMac works best I did not watch your video to the end that's why I made the mistake thank you again what video editor have you got what's a good website to get mac stuff from I am all about free. Someone gave me this iMac because they said it was too old and it doesn't work properly I had a Hackintosh Once Upon a Time now I got my first Mac I am coming from Windows 95 my 1st PC
Yeah I use CapCut, it’s free and an easy download. Pretty easy to use and fast.
I almost decided against installing Sonoma on my Imac late 2013, 2 gig graphic, I5 cpu, 24 gig ram. It runs like a dream with no issues whats so ever. you just need to change the dynamic wall papers and put and normal static one to save graphic usage.
Right, but the lack of TDM support was the deal breaker on my 2012, it ran ok on my 2013, but I couldn’t link them together. So until they update OCLP it’s back to Ventura for now. Sonoma is great and 2gb should be enough to run smoothly.
Unfortunately, it doesn't work for me... everything works until the black screen with the white apple and the loading bar underneath... from there it starts to hang. (iMac 2, late 2012)

I am wondering if OCLP is falling down on the job. There seems to be a lot more issues these days. You could try an older version of the installer and see if that helps. Are you creating the installer on the machine that you are installing? Make sure it’s set up for the correct Mac version if not.
How stable will is be on a external ssd rather than the hdd?
As long as you are using a high speed cable and SSD it should be very stable. I did this on one of my machines and it ran great. I have an SSD with USB C cable.
I'm at the log in screen I put my password in and it keeps coming back to the log in screen is there any way of removing the password
I had this issue once with Ventura and I had to do a fresh install. There may be something wrong with your installer USB so you may need to re create that and try again.
Hi Sam, I'm at the final stage where you erase Ventura and replace with somona but the only option is my 3tb harddrive. So I can't erase and create. I tried to just install but won't let me install to hd as says not supported. There is also no bootcamp there. Any ideas?
Did you format the drive using disk utility? Bootcamp is for windows partition. You may need to format the drive completely. It’s hard to say since I can not see your drive setup
@@BadspadeLive is there any social media platform you are on so I can send you a picture of the drives?
@@BadspadeLive could I create a partition and would it install to there or is that something completely different?
@CallumUrwin-pf2ni you can email me. Badspade@gmail.com
@CallumUrwin-pf2ni yes you could create a partition. But I always format the entire drive and do a fresh install. But yes a partition will work
So i just hold option or option and r
After you create the thumb drive you hold option to select the installer. Once it’s installed you can hold option to select your boot option.
Does this run on PowerMacs, 68K Macs, and or StarMacs?
I am not certain on all of the models that are supported. But check out the OCLP website to see the documentation of supported models. Each model has to have a specific build.
If this was a joke ahhahah it's quite funny, if not the answer is no, only Intel macs are supported.
@@leylandlynxvlog If this is a joke its funny. Wintel PC's only run Intel. Everybody knows Macs only run Motorola chips.
It does more of 30 minutes, I have on the screen it stays one minutes. Can I reboot the computer??
Is it stuck at 1 min? You can try a hard reset, hold the power button. Worse thing you may have to try a fresh install if it doesn’t reboot.
Okay I try
I am currently having a 21.5" Late 2013 iMac with Core i5, 8 gigs of RAM and the stock 1TB HDD that's stuck on Catalina. Should i try installing Sonoma on it? P.S no money for upgrading to SSD :(
Personally I would stay with Ventura if you want Target Display mode capabilities. If that’s not something you need. Go for Sonoma. What graphics card are you running?
@@BadspadeLiveI'm not planning on using it as an external display. I'm doubtful about Sonoma's performance on the HDD. The GPU I'm having is the Nvidia GT 750M 1GB. Thanks for your inputs!
@anirudhs5979 I mean it should run fine on the older HDD you can always just partition the drive and install it to test.
@@BadspadeLive I never thought of that idea. Will try it out soon. Thanks a lot!
I have a 2013 imac. I was on Sonoma and downgraded back to Ventura. Best decision ever.
What is the latest OS that supports Target Display?
Ventura using OCLP, if it’s apple native OS, high Sierra. I think.
Thank you. I checked your other videos and found out the answer.
I had previously installed Sonoma on a 2013. I have installed Ventura on 2x 2013 iMacs and currently using Target Display.
A few notes:
- Sonoma does not support Target Display.
- The Magic Keyboard does not work to trigger Target display on Venture using OCLP. Also does not work on Catalina + High Sierra without OCLP.
- Apple Wired Keyboards work (A1243), Satechi Slim X3 works also.
- The cable connecting the 2 iMacs (2013) must be Thunderbolt , mini DisplayPort does not work (wrong cable purchased)
- 0.5M Apple thunderbolt is too short. Get the 2M cable.
- Logging out of iCloud using Magic Keyboard kept saying wrong Password. Plugging in the Apple Wired Keyboard let me log out of ICloud. tested both keyboards on Notes to verify that both keyboards giving the right inputs… they were… not sure why the Magic Keyboard is acting up but it was not CAPS or FN key.
@diegor4347 thanks for the notes that is very helpful. I have a Magic Keyboard and it worked for me on Ventura. Not sure what the issue there is.
I have an iMac A1213 with High Sierra, I'm trying to install Sonoma but when it loads the white bar the message ''an error occurred preparing the update'' appears, the Sonoma installer is on an external SSD
@@VioletaLopez-w5i that is Odd, I would maybe try creating the installer again, if that doesn’t work. Try an older version of OCLP.
@@BadspadeLive the solution was make a PRAM reset, the instalation finish correctly but now the bluethooth dosen't work
Thank you for the info, what year mac is it? I know the 2011s seem to have issues like this with drivers etc. make sure you install the post install root patches.
@@BadspadeLive imac a1312
@VioletaLopez-w5i is it 1312 or 1213? What year is it?
Does Dual-booting catalina and sonoma works??
Yeah of course dual booting works. You can install as many OS’s as needed. I dual boot Ventura and Ghost Spectre. Keep in mind that Sonoma does not support target display if you need that feature.
@@BadspadeLive Oh its okay im installing Ventura on my Late 2012 iMac. And i wanna keep Catalina if theres Lag issues
Hope it goes well
Is fresh install necessary? I have documents now
Yes, if it’s an older system that is not natively supported. Yes a fresh install is the only way to go.
Am I crazy if I give it a try on my 27" 2011 Imac, Core i5, 20gb RAM, 500GB SSD and AMD Radeon 6970 of 1GB?
1 GB should be good, Sonoma is very graphics heavy and you will not be able to use TDM, but it should run, Just consult the OCLP site for any compatiblity issues with your model.
@@BadspadeLive I had some issues with bluetooth but after reseting the NVRAM and PRAM it worked. I am stunned with my AMD Radeon 6970M, as it runs smoothly the live wallpaper and the general effects. However I can't use Maps, Music Videos from Apple Music, but I can play movies from Apple TV and generally the iMac runs smooth like it did with Ventura.
Glad to hear it brother. The older systems do have bugs but for the most part it will run smoothly
@@BadspadeLive Yes as you said it before, unfortunately the Maps, Screen recording & Weather simply don't work on Sonoma. Other than that it runs smooth.
@MrFlyCarlos great to hear the 2011 runs somewhat smooth!
can i update to sonoma , i currently have Catalina 10.15.7
What model and year is your Mac?
@BadspadeLive i have a ios Catalina 2012 imac.can i update to sonoma
@@republicofkorea123 yes you can, but i would recommend Ventura for the 2012, how large is your graphics card?
yo my iMac from 2014 dos not let me run open openCore
btw I am running on Mac os 10.10.5
Check OCLP website to see if your Mac is compatible. It should be supported but I know they have been having issues with support for Sonoma and certain models
Can we have the direct link for 2012 I Mac?
I’m sorry I don’t understand your question, direct link for what?
If i factory reset it’s still sonoma?
@@achillescorpuz7637 if you already have it installed. You can create a new user account and delete the old one, but if you attempt to use apples system restore it will most likely go back to the latest supported OS for that machine.
How about 2013?
Yeah it actually ran better on the 2013 but still no support for TDM. So I would stick with Ventura for now
nice video but the music is really annoying
Thanks, I get that a lot
External monitor not detected
Could you provide more information on your set up?
@@BadspadeLive imac 27 late 2013 and 32 gb of ram ,NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M 1 GB and 55'' external monitor via minidisplay port to hdmi
@saeedabbas100 yeah I was having issues with Sonoma as well. TDM didn’t work and I am sorry to hear that now your monitor won’t work either. I am wondering if it’s the OCLP team that left out a display port driver or something
you need to take off your password I have the same model everything the worst thing I can't really boot from the hard drive I've got to boot from the USB again
Good but the... music????
Is it too loud. I will see if I can remove it or if I need to re render the whole video
Is thi doable on iMac late 2012 3,4 GHz Qad Core Intel i7 16GB DDR? Open Core legacy patcher os already on 1.5.0
Thanx
It’s definitely doable, what’s the GFX card, mine was only 512mb and Sonoma ran like trash on my 2012. I am not sure if you can do an upgrade to it. I always do a fresh install. You can install on a separate partition to test. Or an external drive.

@Furies-72 yeah you should be fine.
@@Furies-72 just keep in mind Sonoma does not support Target Display Mode. If that is a feature you want.
