    I have the exact guitar ,, I am a session musician and do some touring . I own several high end Gibsons , Fenders ect and my DAngelico stands up to anything I own . I have played it on several sessions and it has delivered no matter the style from Country, Rock , Blues, Jazz and Gospel . I highly recommend this guitar

    My friend who runs a pawn shop calls me and said, ''You gotta come over here and look at this guitar'', so I ran over there and WOW, a black D'Angelico dc, with the stair-step tailpiece. Played it, offered him $300, he said OK. So i bought it and he thru in a case -not fitted, but, hey, a free hard case is a free hard case, right? LOVE this guitar. I didn't have anything in this tone range, or style. Good guitar!

    I have the exact same DC premier played in the demo. This was.bought so I didn’t have to take my ‘68 ES-335 out as much. Not quite the same but it’s not very far off. Had my eye on it for a few months when they put it on sale for about half the price - done deal at that point. Very happy with it. Play classic rock, blues and jazz standards with it.

    That is what the best guitars I’ve ever played! I play classic rock/blues and just purchased a turquoise one for my wife as a gift lol.. see what I’m saying? As a gift to me! The moment I put it to work I started thinking about all these years when I was thinking, there are only two great guitar makers in the planet. Obviously, I was wrong!

    I just bought this exact guitar today (same translucent wine finish) at Guitar Center on clearance. It seemed to have way more character than comparable Epiphones. I changed the strings out to Elixer 10/46's and lowered the action. Just the kind of inspiration I needed. Thanks for the great video!

    I own a DC Premier 12. I play Blues, rockabilly, and some folkie stuff. The Prem covers all the bases. I only play 12s, and I've had, and still have several, but I've built a rapport with the Prem that I don't have with the others. It's a very playable 12. It has a balanced and very clear tone with plenty of snap. It's heavy, but not cumbersome to play. It's not a neck diver. I play thru a Marshall DSL100 valve amp head, and an old Sovtek 4x12 cab. With the Prem I don't use my pedal board but run through a Vox G2 StompLab Modeller. I don't use the StompLab too much as the guitar has ample tone and I use the effects with a very light touch. The finish on the instrument is as good as any other instrument I own. A high quality, reliable, versatile rig, that I'm proud to own, and delight to use. If I were in the market for a 6 string semi hollow, I would investigate the D'Angelico first.

      I own the same 12 string and have done some significant mods: replaced pots and caps with full size CTS and Orange Drops, a Trutone jack and added a master volume on lower horn (yea, I drill holes in things and reamed the existing ones to size for USA spec pots). Great balance, playability and tone from the S-D pups improved noticeably with better electronics. I also have a Premier DC Boardwalk in walnut stain with S-D P90s and a chambered solid body white Premier SD with coil splits. Neither moded (yet). I play the Premier DC with P-90s a lot more than any humbucker guitar, even the ES335 dot I own.
      They have a high value to cost ratio. As well made as any I own. Great instruments.

    Bought this exact same guitar (used) on Facebook Marketplace 4 days ago for $375. I considered this a steal as new Premier DC's are going for near $900 on Sweetwater. The plastic had never been removed from the pickups, body and finish are flawless. Only marks are the usual light pick strokes on the guard. Serial # is very low at 0195 and it has the stairstep tailpiece and wine finish. Only thing it needs is maybe lower the action a bit. Beautiful piece of work.

    Good review :-) I weighted one in the shop here, after trying it out, because it felt lighter than my Dot. It was 3,4 kg (7,5 lbs), while my Dot is ~4,5 kg! (close to 10 lbs), so I wouldn't call it heavy based on what I know. Most Les Pauls and Strats weigh much more...

    I paid $349 for mine from MF "Stupid Deal of the Day". Man this thing is awesome. The neck is butter smooth and the pickups, although not the best, are satisfactory for anything from jazz to metal. I was blown away about how a cheap guitar made in Indonesia could sound and feel so good. The quality control department is the reason. Set up was spot on. I've played the hell out of this thing and it never disappoints. If you don't want to lug your $3K Les Paul around to funky bar gigs, get one of these and forget about it.

    I bought one about a year ago. It was a beautiful sunburst with the most gorgeous figuring but it had a very noticeable rattle coming from somewhere inside. I brought it back and almost the entire stock had the same rattle. There was 2 that didn’t but I didn’t like the white or black after seeing the sunburst striped one.

    • @JackFossett

      Possibly one of the wires was up against the top or the back and shaking a bit as the guitar vibrated. I've had that problem with a number of different hollowbodies before. The wires all need to be secured or suspended away from the body, I wonder if they just didn't do that well.

    • @mikepj1025
      @mikepj1025 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jack Fossett we looked at the wiring and I was hoping it was that. It was not. It was like a metal spring rattle noise. We never found what it was but I must have tried 10 other hollow bodies from other brands and never heard anything like that. Very disappointing because GC had a ridiculous sale for the DC Premiere for $399. Best deal I’ve ever seen for a guitar like that.

    How do you compare it with a Sheraton II Pro, that have similar (almost exactly) specs, and it's in the same price range?

    • @Spartanm333
      @Spartanm333 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      From several reviews of both (including together) and owning an Epi, they are close in size, form and specs although the D'Angelico trumps the Epiphone on it's tone, appearance/character, possibly also build quality.
      In a bit more detail, the Epi will probably have some form (they keep changing the name) of Alnico Classic pickup and as Jack suggests here (many HBs at this price point) they are muddy compared to the D'Angelico and something I would be looking to swap out.I agree that this may be the all maple construction brightening things up but I also think it's a better quality pickup and well matched to the guitars build character.
      Visually, the Epi has the benefit of classic Gibson like styling (335 / 339 dependent on size) so if you are into Chuck Berry get a red one and you are sorted but it wont stand out on stage because it is a common form... the playing is the important thing but any lead guitarist will tell you it's good to have something a little different and the D'Angelico does that with its (almost unique) Art Deco approach - it feels more special in a nutshell and it will be a head turner even with other guitarists.
      In terms of build quality, from my own experience of the Epi it had a finish issue (a glue stain under the laquer), the nut needed re-cutting (high and tight), the fret ends needed work (although levelled at the factory) and the pots started to crackle on turning within 12 months so clearly cheap. I sold the guitar after 18 months somewhat underwhelmed. In my mind it was a budget guitar.
      The D'Angelico from all the reviews I have read including this one here from Jack suggest it feels like a higher priced guitar and after some digging it appears that the Asian manufacturer does have good form and produces some higher end 'show' guitars to rival high end Japanese product. The fit and finish is good, the tuners aren't a problem and the only really cheap part appears to be the plastic nut which you can have replaced by a luthier for probably $50 (with a quick guitar set-up thrown in).
      If you want to get anal (or authentic dependent on your point of view) on the D'Angelico, you could look to replace the pots, electrics and bridge with more expensive parts and materials, more in keeping with a 50's approach but this is true of a standard Gibson USA model - even some of the 'authentic' 50's / 60's models from Gibson USA at $2500+ are far from authentic in the bridge, saddles, stop tail materials and don't be fooled by brand names like Grover... there are mass produced 'factory' parts and higher quality after market parts.
      The D'Angelico is definitely positioned at the higher end of the consumer lines and there is stiff competition in the sector from the likes of Vintage who produce a decent 335 model with Wilkinson (British designed) hardware - it gets very close to a Gibson USA 335 on tone - spooky close. But I've been swayed by the visual character and maple body / pups of the D'Angelico which help it give you something different. I'm looking at one now in white, looks beautiful.

    Hi Jack enjoyed the breakdown and sound samples. I’m a little bummed to read some of your overall opinions. I just bought the sunburst P90 model and I hope I made a slight step up in the semi hollow world I have two epiphone 339’s already. One is humbucker one is P90 equipped not high end guitars but I love them both. I got the D A premier P90 at 449.99, what do you think will I be underwhelmed or happy?

    • @JackFossett
      @JackFossett  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you'll be happy -- D'A's are solid guitars particularly for the price. I'm not sure there will be much of a quality difference between the Epiphones and the D'A, but it depends -- there's a good amount of variance. Also no need to worry about my opinions, either good or bad, if you have a guitar you love and make good music with, thats all that matters!

    Oh well thanks Jack, but I just was told by customer service that the guitar was on back order and they were told it would not be shipped. So I have to ask why do you post it on the M F site, oh well how frustrating. But from your experience are there a few semi hollow builders that have models that just maybe knock it out of the park. Have you ever played the ES335 pro epi. I’m considering something that would be a good upgrade from the two 339’s. Any thoughts, thanks my friend your a big help. By the way 1500 dollars is a stretch but will do to get the right guitar 👍

    • @JackFossett
      @JackFossett  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my experience, the very best hollow & semi hollow guitars at a reasonable price range are Gretsch right now, but they're a bit different. I think Epiphone, D'Angelico and Ibanez are all right in the same ballpark, just depends on the model. Godin makes superb guitars like the Montreal series - a bit on the higher price range, but really really excellent quality.

      @@alonelian5684 Sure thing! Out of all of those brands, and I have limited experience with some, I prefer Epiphone. However, generally if you can its best to try them for yourselves first. Thank you! Sorry this one lead you astray -- I actually have pretty limited experience with Ibanez, but from what I hear, thats an excellent choice. Pretty much no one who plays Ibanez seems to have anything bad to say about them.

      @@JackFossett in fairness, the Ibanez was in need of a fret polish but otherwise a very clean build. Looking forward to more of your content.

    Thanks for the nice in depth review. I also saw your review of the gretsch streamliner g2622... I know these pick ups do not compare. But what is your advice on somebody that want to choose between the tow (I am looking for a versatile semi hollow body with nice cleans for soul, rb, blues or jazz)... Tks

      Thanks for watching! You honestly can't go wrong with either - I've grown to love Gretsch more as I think the quality is quite a bit better, and the pickups are more versatile. With the Filtertron style pickups you can get great blues and jazz tones, but also more growl and twang if the situation calls for it.

      If I can get my hands on one I certainly will. I don't work directly with them, I got this one through trade and put the video together on my own.

    It's very heavy ? Listed on Sweetwater as 7 lbs 13 oz. Les Pauls are over 8. Try Wheaties for breakfast ! LOL

    I searched for this guitar and I could only find a lefty. I’m gonna have to settle for the single cutaway. 🤧

    D'Angelico used to be the finest archtop guitar made in the world. It's painful to see this great name being put on low budget guitars today. It's like putting the Rolls Royce or Range Rover label on a cheap Toyota.

      @@istvandejesus I understand where you are coming from, but $799 in today's world barely qualifies as a player's grade instrument. Usually, a professional grade guitar will set one back a minimum of $1500. Back in the heyday of D'Angelico, the most accomplished jazz guitarists could afford a guitar with the D'Angelico name on it. I remember those days. That's why it's sad to see what sells as a D'Angelico today.
