LOL!!!! I didn't start guitar until I was in my early 50s and had played keyboard for 6 or 7 years. I have now sang and played guitar in about 220 open mics and also played at restaurants and wineries opening for friends. Who made up the 40 year old rule, a 10 year old? Just get a guitar, a good teacher and start working no matter what your age is, 8 to 80!
Bought a guitar in late April, purchased a well-known guitar method book, have been learning the notes of the fret, know many chords, am working on barred chords. Practice everyday, faithfully. Practice, practice, practice. This video is a great help. I’m about to turn 61!
Thank You so much . Reminding me 43 years ago when i was 10 . The guys in my village show me all the basic chords in the first 3 bars . Since then I myself learning all the CAGED chords across the fretboard. Now I am still playing guitar and singing everyday . Your video is great to me. Thanks
I'm over 50, so this video was a bit tough to see properly, until I adjusted my UHF antennas. That said, this is a great lesson on how to best grok the neck and its layout. I know the notes, but this highlights the relationships and nicely maps the intervals. This is exactly what I was looking for.
I am well over 40, at 65 i am still trying to learn how to play. Excellent video for new players that are trying to move beyond learning single basic chords.

@@jlevan1996 If you want to take a course from the ground up and don't mind the little bit of dedication involved, then do Andrew's course. I can tell you that it is not random. I was a member at Guitar Tricks and started their Beginner course. First lesson was good, second was making sense, third lesson was totally unrelated as was all further lessons. So, I quit and joined at Creative Guitar. Andrew's system is a real course that he's used with real human beings at his studio, so it's logical and makes sense.
@@jippie11261 Thanks for your recommendation of Andrews course, i made the mistake of showing interest in Guitar Tricks, they keep emailing me snipets of their course, but i got the impression that all they wanted was your money. I have tried a few beginners courses, only to find that even learning a few basic cords is not easy, some don't show you how or where to place your fingers, i need to start again, and learn how to play from scratch.
Always wanted to go to GIT when I was a kid. My neighbor went for a summer, and when he came back he was teaching all of us some of the tricks he learned.

I’m not sure this is the cage , this is more like where the octaves are , the concept of the cage is to say start on a C chord now play using the A shape , then G shape & E &D spelling out caged , and each shape change starts off from the previous chord shape

So let me make things clear in the debate on passing 40. Hey I am 68 and the thing is that I am a multimusician and when I don’t practice drums (both electronic and acoustic) or practice keyboard or etudes on my classic flute. ( when I was 20 I travelled around Europe as a street musician.) Then, I for sure also get a lot of fun learning more on guitar and base. If you might, for example have seen Paul McCartney 78, you might also have had another point of view about age. And to learn, is the most beautiful things in life, and it is something you can do long as you live. The result is not important, it is that you try to do your best and enjoy it that is the meaning. The guys that become masters are there to inspire us. ❤️🎶 Today I will spend most of the time with Logic in my home studio!🎧🎶
Well I’m over 40, but I’ve been playing almost 40 years now too. So for me, it was very tedious, and I had to keep fast forwarding as I was hoping to find some new breakthrough. When I should know by now, there really isn’t any new breakthroughs to learning the neck, ha ha. Anyway, maybe the title should be, “intermediate guitar players of all ages.” As I didn’t find this much different than other ways of memorizing the neck that I learned back in the 80s. But it sounds like some people here learned some things, so that is great! 👍🏻🎸

A down to earth no frills approach to learning guitar. Excellent explanations for courses along with a little theory to go along with it. Creative Guitar Studio for me, seem to blend in the theory with lessons and inspires one to want more. Well, at least for me in my humble opinion.
Whoa !! I’ve watch a ton of guitar lessons from all over the internet for a few years now , not making much progress due to horrible practice regime . That aside I can’t believe this is the first time I’ve heard of and notice the octaves in the C shape !! Only 3 mins into this video , am already glad I clicked the notification hehe .

Careful , the CAGED system does what it’s called ..it’ll get you stuck in a box or cage .. best learn also what each notes effect is 9th, 6th 3rd etc ..... and get out of that cage fast
Almost 70 been playing since was 9 years old must say if had this clarity back in the day I'd say time I hit 20 years old definitely been a better guitarist. Don't say this very often but what a gt illustration!! BRAVO👏🎸

so, look at the chart at 12:15, do the practice in the intro (and at 12:35) which marches you up the fretboard doing CAGED for C (and eventually all keys)... every day... great idea! thanks!

Most helpful explanation and with a bit of effort it seems to expand one's understanding and confidence for individuals like me who are still trying to learn more about playing the guitar at age 64.5
It's not an entirely valid title/headline, but it makes sense for some of us. In my case, i started playing when i was about 12, but was always intimidated by lead work. It both 'hurt my fingers' as a kid, and i just didn't have confidence in ability to learn it. I stuck with just learning the main riffs and rhythm stuff, even from Van Halen and 80s metal-but not soloing. Skip ahead 30-40 years, and i was just as intimidated by lead, but since i hit 40, there's an age (+lack of sleep) factor that diminishes my memory. So, there's that. Of course, you can start learning when you're 40 and not have this as an obstacle, but i kinda feel like it's less of an obstacle if you learn it while you're younger, and don't let too much time pass for it to build up as some 'insurmountable' feat in your mind.
I am not over 40, but I am pretty close, and I get what he means. Some of us that are older can make use of a more condensed version of something. Time might be more limited, and many find as they get older that learning new things doesn't come as easy. I know I am one of those people, and I found this video very helpful. If you don't feel that way as you get older, well I am happy for you.
Hi Andrew, the caged looks like a good spot to improve as a mediocre player that has self taught and missed important building blocks of guitar. You have really great clean, concise and exacting fretboard fingering and your effects sounds I want to learn too... I'm a Saxophonist by trade but attempted guitar most of of my life. I'm 58 now. I have jumped around through lessons, missing important building blocks in the journey and have not memorized the fretboard either. I can figure out the notes but not nano second speed needed as my Sax fingerings are automatic. Also, I'm noticing knowing the notes of chords is the only way to understand building triads etc. After 40 learning is definitely not easy. Sax was a piece of cake starting at 12 years old. I'm wondering where should a student like me start to improve Guitar ? Thanks from Gmanjazz, Stuck on a middle pleateu somewhere in guitarland.

I am very interested in guitar 🎸. I tried to learn how to play it. But I couldn't because of my poorness. I bought guitar and I learnt to play it for about a week. At that time my brother-in-law passed away. So I had to stop learning and started making money. Now I am 49 years old. Am I still enough to learn because I love rock music and I like to play it. Hang in there, I think this is more of an intermediate guitar concept. I have been playing for years but never hear about it until maybe the last year.
It is basically just how to identify where the root notes are in the 5 most basic chord shapes. If you can visualize where they are in those shapes, it still applies all the way down the neck. It is just a helpful shortcut. You have to have some basic fretboard knowledge though
