I've been playing guitar for 47 years and consider myself to be a pretty fair player. I already knew the content of this video but it took me a long time to figure it out. I just wanted to say that your teaching method is so good, explaining what needs to be explained without getting overly technical and complicating the message. Unfortunately too many of the youtube guitar teachers either over explain or try to explain in a "music theory" way that makes some of them difficult to understand. Sometimes I think they are just trying to impress people with their knowledge of music theory. Kudos for an excellent video!
For chord root note on the given string, play chord shape from the low root: 6:E 3:49 maj 4:21 min 5:A 5:07 maj 5:20 min 4:E 6:37 maj 7:10 min 3:A 8:02 maj 8:46 min 2:D 10:48 maj 11:17 min (for both major and minor versions also play the chord fifth on the 3rd string)
Wow this video was a huge paradigm shift for me. I knew the basics of caged but no one has ever broken it down by string like that. New favorite teacher and channel. Keep up the great work!
I always thought that to play all over the FB you needed four basic shapes utilizing barre chords. Amazed by guitarists playing chords up the neck without using a barre. Now I understand. Thank you so much for this as this is the missing part that allows me to progress. A most beneficial blog for me.
BEST guitar lesson ever ! I stopped taking lessons because the explanations and lessons were overly complex and made no sense, causing me to lose interest and many years of losses enjoyment playing the guitar. Thank you so very much for finally making it enjoyable and easy to play and write music for my songs 😎
Amazing lesson. I've been playing guitar for a while (no formal training). Thanks for helping a fretboard illiterate person like me understand it better

There's just soooo many of these day 1 basic videos that it can take foreverrr to finally stumble upon the one that does go over what the next step is. Grrrr
The difference maker is your teaching style and explanation without throwing excess jargon out there that Some like me may not be ready for. Your way makes sense to anyone, regardless of level. Thank you!
Without any exaggeration, this was the most eye-opening lesson in the guitar world for me. And I´ve seen tonnes of videos on CAGED and got disappointed in myself. Thanks a lot for such a nice way to break this so easy and smooth. 👌👏🤘
The pentatonic scales also layer over these exact positions. This is the proper way to learn guitar because it's the right way to THINK about the neck and anatomy of chords. Awesome video!
I've watched dozens of guitar instruction videos over the years and I must say, this is probably THE BEST video for progressing beyond just playing cowboy chords and barre chords.
Cool…!!! You’ve just made the knowledge of Chords very practical and vivid for the beginner and inexperienced guitarist. And what is more reinforcing is that you illustrated the chords, not on the pages of a book, but on the fretboard where they really belong. Excellent teaching. Thanks so much.
Love it. When I was little my parents wouldn't let me practice my piano so I would go into my bedroom and play my guitar. I was self taught (other than piano, reading etc.) except for one guitar lesson. I fired the teacher because he kicked my dog out of his way. I was 8 or 9. I figured out all of these chord combinations by myself and I share them with my students now. They are the best especially for people with little hands.
The best lesson I've come across in a long while. Easily understandable, not overly technical, practical and useful. Thank you for all your efforts. Wishing you all the best.
This should be one or probably the BEST GUITAR LESSONS OF ALL TIME, you don't need to feel discouraged by over explanation with music theories most guitar tutors do
I've been watching videos for years trying to understand what the heck was I not understanding, and everyone quickly flew into some rant on theory and quickly lost me down the rabbit hole they would pull me into. Wow!! Shape dependent on the string!!!????? Feel like I lost so much time but at least it led me here. FINALLY! Thank you.

How can there only be 808 comments on this video? I was explaining to my brother, just last week, how to add variety to his play by changing the shapes of chords further up the neck, and, hey, presto, your video shows up. A bit more technical than me, but clearly and simply clarifying the principle. And for once, no ,Look at me, how quickly I can zip up and down the neck" showing off. Top notch lesson.
This is indeed a great lesson. It took me some time to figure it out on my own but this is exactly how i presented the guitar to my wife. She thought guitar was easy and her progression was quite impressive.
Fantastic guitar lesson for any aspiring guitarist trying to build practical playing skills. An extremely useful video. This is essential and practical guitar knowledge.

A bit of a dubiously worded title page but a good lesson within on starting to use higher pitched triads. The extra value was in the progression played on the higher strings at the end. It sounds thin on an acoustic. Thank you for the clear lesson.
The secret seems to be playing the first four strings like a baritone ukulele with movable chords and not playing the fifth and six strings. Great video and an eye opener.
Ok! I have to admit that the caged system is like a box of a puzzle all scramble and this video just made a lot and I mean a lot more sense to me. Everything is clearer now. Thank you!
I like guitar teachers on these videos that can give a short explanation of what there are about to teach, you sir are 1 of them, you gave a brief explanation and then got right into the lesson, great job, your teaching is real good, I'll have to use this to learn the chords in different locations on the fretboard( fingerings and all) real good teaching! Thanks Much!

I’ve been working this out slowly but so much better when someone explains the logical rationale and gives note names etc without me having to go back over everything. Thank you ☺️
Great video! A follow up video with the scales you can play once you've found the cord shape on each of the 5 strings would tie this all together. Something like strum the cord and then run through the scale for that cord shape would be awesome!
Been trying to get my head around this for so long, watched your video for 5 minutes and understood it just like that! Thank you so much from the UK!!!
This is amazing. If my back did not hurt so badly, I would grab a guitar and practice this right now. I do not have the strength in my left hand to make barre chords since I broke my neck and back. This might be the answer to my barre problems.
You take the chord shape you would use for the “normal” chord. Example on the b string: the root note (c) is on the 13th fret. And for a d major, normally your finger is on the 3rd fret if the b string. So you do the d chord shape with the b string pushed down on the 13th fret. So c major with root note on b would be : x (e) x (a) 10 (d) 12 (g) 13 (b)

It would be worth pointing out (especially on the D string), that D is up 2 from C, so you go to the 12-2 = 10 fret. That always works since 12 half steps is an octave.
