I’ve watched a lot of videos on the major pentatonic and I thought I had it your video made seem so simple please do more of these I’m hungry for more I’ve been watching your videos as long as you have been on TH-cam you are by far the best hands down.
This is the finest scale lesson and explanation I have had the pleasure to view. The presentation by Rob takes so much of the mystery out of 3 simple scales. Makes me feel like I'm playing real music and not just repetitive scale drills. Your are a great instructor Rob . . . .THANKS!
Initially I thought a friend of mine had been replaced by alien pod-people 🥜. Instead, I learned he had been studying your video. He's suddenly playing scales, picking out melodies from recordings, attempting to bend notes. And then he played something more sophisticated sounding ... he said it was a "Dorian" scale. Pod person 👽! My point... this video helped to unlock a whole new musical dynamic for a self-described strummer. For years, I've offered to help with scales, visualization and improvising. After studying your video, he finally told me he had been too "embarrassed"(???) to ask for help. He always thought he would have figured it out on his own (by now). He honestly believed you had to be "gifted" in some way to learn this stuff. Nothing ever clicked for him. Long story short. You've either demystified some key concepts for lots of folks here or you're the alien pod-people overlord. Thanks either way! My friend is turning 70 this year. Life's too short to let embarrassment get in the way of your goals and it's never too late to learn something new. So now he's all energized about music theory and more annoying.... "How do you know it's a relative minor? It's always asking for money."
Wow. I say that you connected to me a beginner better than any videos out there. Practical application was great. No confusing theories, gives me nose bleed.

Chappers, thank you, thank you, thank you. I've been playing the guitar since I was 12 on an old Gretsch jazz guitar (tan), then moved to learning Classical Spanish Guitar for the next two years, then picked up a white Strat and thought I was God, playing what I heard, felt but mostly imitated people like Clapton, Hendrix, then as time went on Robin Trower and so on. I played in a group for a while, then, my guitarring buddy died when I was 35 and i gave everything up. This year I am 73 so I decided to buy a Start, a Custom Les Paul Black Beauty with three humdingers, and a Custom 1960 'Ice Tea', Straight Gibson, and a Marshall Amp (SS sadly), but my playing was still not up to scratch, so I found a Gibson guitar Course (DVD's + CDs), bought lots of books, etc. Then I happened on your 'You cannot exist without these - 3 Scales lesson'. I learned more watching this with an open mouth, and yes I was hungry too, than my entire sixty years of playing a guitar (badly) it seems. You are awesome and a wonderful, wonderful teacher. (That's coming from a teacher of nearly forty years by the way at college and university level.) You enthralled me and I am so, so grateful to you for making something that looks blistering impressive look so incredible easy. You're an apt pupil. You'll go far 😉
Drink up!
Absolutely. Won't work properly unless you do exactly as he says.
As others have said, I learned more in twenty minutes than twenty years. I knew this, I just couldn't put it together. Thanks for the best guitar lesson vid on utube, I'll be back for more.
What an amazing video. I'm going to chew on this lesson for 6 years, progressing the whole time. Your pacing, word economy and video clarity are outstanding. Thank you very much Rob.
Very intelligent, comprehensive, and thorough way to explain a lot of this stuff.....Bravo! Thank you!
15:47 you blew my mind and made sense of magazine articles I read 20 years ago about scales. Great video!
Holy hell. I learned these scales a while ago, but it wasn't until I watched this that I understood practical ways to apply that knowledge. Well done sir!
At 62, I have been a guitar owner all my life. This is the lesson that will convert me to a guitar player. Thank you!
I agree with John See below - (at 62) this is the best guitar lesson I've ever seen too - many thanks, Rob!
Thank you, Rob. For helping and inspiring millions of guitarists such as myself for years. Your existence is appreciated by many.
I've played for like 8 years and I know almost no musical theory and so much of this made sense to explain the songs I've learned I actually laughed at how simple you made the stuff I didn't quite understand seem. Awesome lesson!
After 30 years of learning this was the best lesson I ever got
Randomly stumbled across this video searching for scales...LOL Oh if we only had this material 25-30 yrs ago! The Struggle was real! (Cassette/CD rewind play, rewind play)
iv been playing for years with literally no theory whatsoever, this is massively helpful and straightforward with no BS involved.
cheers Rob!
And a lightbulb suddenly comes on in a foggy head, all the way up here in Canada. Thanks dude! This lesson is pure gold👍
There are so many scale teaching videos that really come across as nonsense to a beginner. As a person that is just starting to get a feel for the notes on the fretboard, this vid is the first that has ever made a bit of sense to me. Thanks.
Using the same three-note-per-string pattern to represent the seven modes - mind blown 🤯 - I learned it as seven different patterns, then I learned the Segovia scales and the CAGED patterns. It’s all finally coming together now - Thank you Chappers !! 🙏
Every guitarist has his own style of playing, which makes each of us who play special. It took me about thirty-five years of playing to take on my style. These are mostly guitarists who play for a long time.Rob can be seen playing very well, but his lessons are good for those people who play short. They are more for beginners
It's 2024, almost 2025 and this lesson is still super useful. I've been playing the guitar for a couple of years and this lesson gave me a true "ah-ha" moment. I've been digging through your lessons and learning a lot.
Best, most complete and interesting explanation on TH-cam.
When you move from E major pattern down and describe it as Dorian isn’t it Phrygian because the parent scale is C major ?
Awsome Rob. 4 months of weekly lessons in and this just helping me get my head around things evenmore. The skeleton is starting to get some meat on the bones. Many thanks.
20+ years of playing and this is the best lesson I have seen about scales! I hope you delve into modes some more...
Ugh.. knew this but You sir have made a world of difference in my journey! The way you explained it showed it... was key to me actually understanding it.. Thank You a year later!
Rob, This is the greatest video I ever seen on You Tube. You have shown people how to transition into modal playing in an easy and understandable way. Thanks very much.
I’ve played the guitar for over 15 years now, and I just learned a shit ton from this video lol
this is how all guitar lessons should be like for starters. The way he explains is awesome. Kudos my brother for the amazing lesson.
I’ve watched a lot of videos on the major pentatonic and I thought I had it your video made seem so simple please do more of these I’m hungry for more I’ve been watching your videos as long as you have been on TH-cam you are by far the best hands down.
This 19 minutes totally demystifies the major scales and how to use them all along the fretboard. Thank you Rob!!!!
This is the finest scale lesson and explanation I have had the pleasure to view. The presentation by Rob takes so much of the mystery out of 3 simple scales. Makes me feel like I'm playing real music and not just repetitive scale drills. Your are a great instructor Rob . . . .THANKS!
This might be the single most helpful video I’ve seen in all my guitar playing. I’m going to definitely practice these! Thanks Rob!
I know you're a good player, Rob, but you are an absolutely stunningly good teacher. You were born to do this. Keep it going.
Thank you dude, I really appreciate that - is feedback like this that keeps me going :-)
@@RobChappers Earned. This was a great demonstration of modes. The first 2 sections are needed I guess.... but when you opened the magic box it stared back at everyone "try this". ;) Good work.
Freaking wow. Thanks for CLEARLY and CONCISELY making it easy to understand for a 49 year old newbie. This information is GOLD!!!!! Thank you so much Rob!!!!!!!
Wow in all my years of playing no one explained these scales to me as well as you! Great Job!
Best guitar lesson you’ll ever get, and it’s free!! Thanks Rob.
That is true. I was on my deathbed when a friend rushed in to quickly show me these scales and my life force flowed back into my dying carcass. I am well again. Thank you for warning guitar players everywhere before it was too late for the poor souls. Rob triumphs again.
danmar007 no, if you were born not knowing these things, you never existed. If you want to be a super literal prick, get it right.
Joe, take your meds.
Lol....I felt the exact same way. Life force, restored. 😆😁
Thank you!!!!! I’ve watched a million videos on scales and you’re the first to make me understand how it works.
I’ve Been trying to “learn” songs on TH-cam for over two years. I kinda reached a place where I didn’t know where to go. I feel like my eyes have been opened after watching this video and a couple others today. Now I can learn the scales people used to make songs!
That was a great video. The guy has really developed a great on screen comfort-ability that makes him easy and fun to learn from. Thanks for the great content Rob.
This is terrific man. I’ve always been scared of playing lead (I’m a chord playing singer-songwriter) but this has given me the confidence to start riffing properly. Thank you!
Holy Shit Rob, wtf.
I've been stumbling about for the last 30 years using the Pentatonic and bits of the Dorian not knowing what I was doing or how to really use it (didn't even know it was called the Dorian).
This has been the single best guitar lesson I have ever seen.
Shit dude, it just makes sense now. My mind is blown, I'm feeling a little dizzy and light headed thinking about the potential it has opened up for me.
Thank you for posting such a simple and well explained video man.
This is quite possibly the most helpful video I have ever seen on navigating the fret board. No showing off - very simply explained. Thanks Rob.
Been playing for almost 9 months now. And this just got me 5 levels up. Easy and clean, didn’t know you were chill like that. Thank you!
You just opened my eyes to this understanding. Thank you sir, you're a good man and there isn't many of us left! ;)
Man, I wish I had TH-cam when I started learning guitar.
Me too mate. It beats lifting the arm on the turntable to go back a few bars, drop it and go again!!
Funny thing is I’m still playing most of the old stuff with fantastic note by note tutorials.
Fuck. Tell me about it!
I say this to my mate all the time, all we had was books which i didn't understand at the time.
@@paul9570
I got some Hal Leonard book and an acoustic for Christmas when I was 12. . No idea how to tune the damn thing. Book didn't translate too well once my guitar went out of tune, and I didn't pick it up again until I was 18.
Smartphones
Been playing for 30 years, you just helped me understand what i've been trying to figure out all this time! #MINDBLOWN🧠💥
If I could I would shake your hand mate. You are legendary, I have learnt in 20 more than in whole month. Fantastic Lessons
These are the lessons I need!😎thanks so much!
Great lesson. I've been playing for 40 years and this is one of the easiest methods I've seen. Keep going :)
OMG the third diatonic scale is amazing! iv been playing years and this has given me a whole new realm of vibes to play with! awesome! thanks Chappers!
Rob you have just explained something that has opened up my playing by miles. Thank you
I am beyond this, but I can imagine that for a beginner this is excellent stuff. Very well explained. Young people are fortunate to have this, we had to learn the hard way, there was no internet. Well done Rob, you are an excellent teacher.
This lesson integrate all valuable things that we know and condense them into one precious lesson.
I like they way he strumms and play the scale. Very inspiring. I will do the same regularly, it looks awesome. Cheers from Indonesia.
Greetings from Sweden. These videos are really great, just started playing guitar a few weeks ago and was looking to learn a scale after learning the chords you showed in your last tutorial. The timing of this upload couldn't have been any better!
one of the best guitar lessons ever, literally the first time I connected the pentatonic major and minor like that
Le Spam - take your meds
best guitar lesson about scales I ever watched despite being a beginner it is so informative and very well explained thank you so much.
First time in 45 years any of this made sense. Thank you R.
I have now got to make my niot yet arthritic fingers move incredibly fast using those three scales or as you say the 7 Diatonic Modes. At long last, I can now play the guitar the way I want to. Bless you mate.
“Here’s the G string” without a smirk - well impressed.
No; - but he does grate his teeth a little.
Hee hee.
This is brilliant!!! I'm pretty much a middle aged beginner outside of most low end open chords and being able to barre the Em shape, the only one I can move around comfortably! There's enough material here to keep me going for months! Thanks Rob!!
Damn dude🤯 You just demystified YEARS of confusion. Every time someone tried explaining these concepts to me...it never made sense. I’m actually excited about playing again! Thank you🤘🏻 Subscribed👍🏻
Rob, at 45 years of age, regularly playing since I was 11, you've taught me things today. Thank you pal.
Being 49 years old and wanting to learn guitar after noodling with it for years but not learning much....Rob just taught me more practical information that I can actually USE than all the hundreds of videos I've watched that have made me more confused and discouraged. Learn some scales they said but noone explained anything about the root note and showed me how that is moveable like he did. Wow. Im sure alot of you knew this info already but this is eye opening info for me. Thank you sir for this video!
This is such a priceless lesson! You've got a rare gift for teaching, Rob! I've been trying to get into improvising and this one video opened so many doors for me!
Literally everyone says this on every goddamn lesson video.
I just learned more in 20 minutes than 10 in person lessons.
Just did the same 🤘
For me is was 19 minutes and 14 seconds, thanks to my ad blocker :)
because too many guitar teachers do not understand how to teach and use context in lessons!
Aint that the truth.
Never had a lesson one little brother's got lessons and instruments I learned by ear played in a band learned songs by books general and band specific bought a clip on tuner and loving it TH-cam still feels like cheating.
That was a killer lesson. Very useful. I had learned these scale shapes, but this took using them to new places. As an intro to modes, i say thank you so much! 🎼 10!
I like your lessons the most.
You actually show us where to put our fingers.
Starting and ending your riffs on the root note makes your solos sound much better then just "noodling" around, as so many teachers tell you.
This was a really cool effort. I really enjoyed the third scale lesson, nicely done.
Now this is a lesson! Especially if you know some notation ie: notes. If you don’t it’s easy to start learning & next thing you know you are into Modes. Ooh!
Very cool Rob. Very cool!
Hi Rob, in my 60s and trying to learn guitar and bass 😧 just watched 3 scales, wow how do you make so much sense in one lesson. Believe I have seen you playing for a Guildford store on y tube🤔 top man and many thanks.
Beer sounds goog 👍
oh man, you clicked my mind with this great class. It's like a light bulb goes on in my head. It is a simple class, but with immense value, it will make a big difference in my life, thanks!
MJB, from Brazil.
Great instruction video/class. Possibly one of THE best introductions to actually understand how to start learning lead guitar with simplistic explanations and instructions. Fantastic job!
Am currently playing lead guitar in a band and this definitely helps me find new ways to write solos. Seriously, how couldn't other guitar teachers teach this?
if your a lead guitarist you should have learnt the pentatonic scale as soon as you started. its not suppose to be the only scale you use aswell, you gotta use other scales. learn the diminished scale and the byzantine scale then you have way more ways of soloing.
@@sirspongadoodle cool. 2 years later, ive enhanced my blues playing to a point i feel confident with it, and now im enjoying learning dorian, phrygian, and lydian legato and arpeggios, kinda like the stuff you see done by the fusion guys. the band doesnt exist anymore either 😂😂 as do most high school bands when some people in it want to pursue music seriously and others dont. guess time is nigh to just keep sitting down to practice and write. cheers
@@niccololaforteza7983 good to hear
Great and invaluable info in this video aside: You are great at teaching. Very clear and easy to understand. Thank you a lot for sharing on youtube
Rob is always so funny and yet so damn on the money when it comes to sharing his gifts. Top bloke, top musician. Top guitar teacher.
Well done Rob.
I'v seen many tutorial videos done by many great guitarist...
but you are one of ' the few "
that has that something extra when it comes to teaching.
My wife's ome of those teacher who goes the extra mile, so I should know what I'm talking about.
Lots of people plays the guitar well... but being a good musician don't always translate into being a good instructor... just as all good soccer players won't always turn out to be good coachers.
You explain things so easily, with no techinal frills & wizardry...
yet in a way that makes it easy to understand...
Think I'll subscribe to you from now on.
Really Well Done !!!
Your comment is just as good as his teaching you described, lol😆
Thanks Chappers. I was stuck in a pentatonic rut for years. This video really helped me get out.
