To be fair, what qualities it does have aren't enough to truly make it bad; hell, even when it was untiered in gen5, he stated it didn't deserve to be. And in all honesty, being a water type is kind of a double-edged sword in this case: it's a legitimately good type to have (seriously, water may just be the objectively best type in the game both for purposes of in-game as well as competitive play, all things considered), but at the same time, there are SOOOOO many other water types that it's going to have some sort of competition. This in turn makes it's flaws seem to stand out more, and can be enough to get you to ask, "why should I use this Pokemon when I can choose this other option instead?"
I wouldn't say it got better, just that it got just enough each generation to keep it viable at least in the low tiers. Even then, it still wound up untiered in BW although if PU came around just one generation earlier, it would've had a home there at least.
It’s honestly due to GF’s cruelty with move distributions. It at least gave kingler knock off (while not giving it to cacturne???!) but not giving it a secondary physical water stab to use with sheer force (seriously, so many things get waterfall) until gen 7 hurt it a lot as well.

For most forms of media, a tier list will generally sort out the good from the bad for everything that applies, and as a result, those who want to get the best success will experiment with the high-tier choices and find ways to use them effectively while ignoring the low-tier choices that simply will not cut it by comparison. This is where Smogon's philosophy in tiering differs from the norm: by dividing up the many existing Pokemon into tiers, they do so to try to find ways for even the worst Pokemon in the game to be able to see at least SOME kind of success, no matter how niche of a role they may have; as a result, a Pokemon has to be an extremely special kind of terrible to be considered unviable enough to be untiered, and thus not worth using by anyone who wants to win, thus treating it the same way other tier lists would treat something so low on the figurative totem pole, so to speak.

I love Kingler, but it struggles because of it's overall design-- Nowadays there is just too many pokemon for a bulky mono-type water pokemon to stand out. Kingler is the exact kind of pokemon that needs a regional variant to give it enough design space to have a niche. I think a Water/Steel Kingler could work; give it Tough Claws instead of Sheer Force, give it an expanded physical attacker moveset (Stone Edge, Bullet Punch, Meteor Mash, Power-Up Punch) and some other stuff and I think it could have a solid role in a tier, if not necessarily OU.
Honestly I'd rather Gamefreak just embrace updating existing pokemon than make regional variants for that purpose. Gen 8 DLC regional variant Kingler just isn't the same pokemon as Kingler as far as I'm concerned, just like Alolan Dugtrio isn't the same as plain Dugtrio and I would prefer they fix existing pokemon instead of making new variants of them. You can still have regional variants, I freaking *love* the blond haired Scandinavian pop star that is Alolan Dugtrio, I just don't want that to be how Gamefreak makes existing pokemon more competitively viable. Because from my perspective, it's not making them more competitively viable, not anymore than adding an entirely new pokemon would have.

Honestly, if Kingler just had its health and speed swapped, it might've been a good trick room mon in doubles, especially if it actually got waterfall.

0:26 Well, to be fair. Kingler is faster than Bulbasaur and hits hard. Arcanine is faster and Kingler has a pitiful special defense. So in a game scenario, Kingler is actually more likely to win against Bulba and lost to Arcanine.
They could’ve given Kignler Swift Swim in gen 3 to compensate for its lack of speed. Might’ve been a better addition to rain teams in gen 5 with that in mind and have room for more coverage to go with items like life orb, or even choice band.
I feel like an episode on Haunter could be done too. It seems to lurk in the NU tiers despite not being fully evolved, which is pretty impressive. Thanks for keeping track!

Victreebel, Venomoth, Dodrio and now Kingler. It feels great to see a handful of Generation I Pokémon that have survived the ever-evolving Meta Game, while only getting minimal additions to their arsenals.
Competition Record: A lower tier king. For his entire life, Kingler had features that made him an interesting fighter. He showed this in his first two generations. But the next 3 were too much for the crab to handle… but when PU came into being, Kingler returned to his Royal spot as a powerful and interesting warrior in the lower tiers. PU and NU will never forget the power of that 10,000 horsepower claw.
As someone who once had pet fiddler crabs when I was a kid, I can see the appeal. Plus, the crustacean Pokemon generally are pretty well designed, so there's nothing wrong here.
I wonder why high crit rate moves don’t get boosted by sheer force? That sounds like a valid secondary effect to me. Though crits would do more than a 30% boost, I feel the guaranteed boost is better than hoping for a crit
Just wondering, anyone else still hoping for Electrode to come around? I would think it still proves a somewhat frustrating opponent with it's Speed guaranteeing it NEVER fails to accomplish whatever prime objective you set it for. Competitive Kingler for me os like Pinsir is a good Pokémon for Lower tiers but is good in OU If you have a Nice support and agressive play. I Buffed Kingler with a Mega Evolution i ever want on Kingler when the megas are annouced in X and Y. Mega Kingler have now 108 of Base Speed, 150 Base Attack and 115 Base Special Attack with ability Power Tweezers It Boosts moves with Tweezers like Crabhammer with now 120 Base Attack and 100 accuracy and new Tweezers moves with Ice, Fire and Eletric and make this ability Boosts Night Slash, Shadow Claw and X-Scissor. Kingler now can learn Night Slash and Shadow Claw and other moves like Stone Edge and Close Combat, the bad side of Power Tweezers is drop Kingler's Acurracy in 1.5. (Like Hustle ablity) And Thanks Again Kingler's is Awsome! and good Sunday for everyone.

Gen 7 meta is going to overtake gen 8. It's like they scaled down the power in gen 8 for balance then just made it pointless by planning to bring back majority of the Pokemon dominating everything in gen 7.

I love that his Gen 1 front sprite has same sized pincers but his back sprite doesn't...like they were still figuring out the look of certain mons back then
To be precise, they only had to draw half the sprite and mirror it in the middle to fill it out. Gotta save space!

@@coldore6734 Gen 3 and 4 as well. Crawdawnt is LEAGUES above Kingler, to the point of being OU in current gen 8. Kingler on the other hand is NU at best in every generation he was aside from 1 due to not having NU.
Honestly, if Kingler just had its health and speed swapped, it might've been a good trick room mon in doubles, especially if it actually got waterfall.

Well, to be fair. Kingler is faster than Bulbasaur and hits hard. Arcanine is faster and Kingler has a pitiful special defense. So in a game scenario, Kingler is actually more likely to win against Bulba and lost to Arcanine.

They could’ve given Kignler Swift Swim in gen 3 to compensate for its lack of speed. Might’ve been a better addition to rain teams in gen 5 with that in mind and have room for more coverage to go with items like life orb, or even choice band.

Victreebel, Venomoth, Dodrio and now Kingler. It feels great to see a handful of Generation I Pokémon that have survived the ever-evolving Meta Game, while only getting minimal additions to their arsenals.
Competition Record:
A lower tier king. For his entire life, Kingler had features that made him an interesting fighter. He showed this in his first two generations. But the next 3 were too much for the crab to handle… but when PU came into being, Kingler returned to his Royal spot as a powerful and interesting warrior in the lower tiers. PU and NU will never forget the power of that 10,000 horsepower claw.

Competitive Kingler for me os like Pinsir is a good Pokémon for Lower tiers but is good in OU If you have a Nice support and agressive play. I Buffed Kingler with a Mega Evolution i ever want on Kingler when the megas are annouced in X and Y. Mega Kingler have now 108 of Base Speed, 150 Base Attack and 115 Base Special Attack with ability Power Tweezers It Boosts moves with Tweezers like Crabhammer with now 120 Base Attack and 100 accuracy and new Tweezers moves with Ice, Fire and Eletric and make this ability Boosts Night Slash, Shadow Claw and X-Scissor.
Kingler now can learn Night Slash and Shadow Claw and other moves like Stone Edge and Close Combat, the bad side of Power Tweezers is drop Kingler's Acurracy in 1.5. (Like Hustle ablity) And Thanks Again Kingler's is Awsome! and good Sunday for everyone.
