I figured out how to fire harden a spear in second grade by mistake... I had made a spear with my pocket knife then later my dad had me make a bonfire. I used the spear as a poker to move the sticks around. Later I found out because of the fire the spear became very hard.
Really good. I especially like that you mentioned greasing the sharper point of the spear and THEN burning it, some people have left that out and just skip straight to burning when they've made the tip decently sharp.
lines 737 I made a fire hardened wooden spear years ago. I stab stuff with it and smack it against trees all the time. Still hasn't even cracked on me and it has much more reach than a knife. Not nearly as sharp as one, though.
Lines 737 Spears have longer reach, giving you more distance between you and your attacker. The knife would still be good for skinning and carving, but the spear is a much better weapon for combat.
Most survival tips normally focus on simply finding water, food, and shelter. They seem to forget that one may need a weapon because, well, anything can kill them out there. Or, simply, we may want to hunt for food
Yup, this is definitely a better option than a Knife when it comes to survival. You do not want to engage in close range with something like a wolf or a bear which can cripple you easily with one bite so that you cannot fight back anymore. The range should also be helpful in keeping them at bay when it's more than one since wolves usually hunt in packs. (But the chance that you survive a full wolf pack attack is very slim. Even with a firearm, that would be a VERY bad situation.) Often times, it's best to rely on striking fear in wild animals when they're about to engage by making noise and act intimidating. Yelling at them is a great and easy way to achieve this. Most animals which are not actually starving or desperately protecting their offspring will run away from that. If you have fire, that's also something that animals fear. A campfire will usually repel animals to come even remotely close to your location.
I have a spear and I live next to the woods but not in the woods and me and my family go beat hunting sometimes . And I made the spear from this Vedio and its great thanks 🙏🏾
I understand your point. I carry a knife on me almost all of the time (Leatherman), and I know that many other survivalists and preparedness people do as well. Hopefully you have one because it saves you so much time. If not, you can use stone tools. I've done this before, and it takes 3-4 times longer than using steel. You can use a stone hand ax to cut down the sapling, and grind the spear into a point on a larger rough stone. Even the burnishing can be accomplished with a smooth stone...actually, that's what I learned using.
It seems silly to make a spear. Yet, when you are alone and afraid it gives a boost in confidence. Most animals will avoid you just for being a human and larger. But there is always that one fur ball that can't take a hint! Especially I a marsh or swamp. Probing an area before you step. It really changes the mind set having that and fire.
I think spears are great because I think of them like a sword and an arrow combined because you can keep a good distance and also move fast and do great amounts of damage and they are also very versatile.
This is wonderful! I needed to figure out how to make a spear for a social studies project, and I had no idea how to do it. Now, I have something that looks decent, but I‘ll come back again and see what grade I got.
This is a great video but I'm just here because I want to make an awesome vampire stake and I wanted info on how to do the fire hardening thing properly... I didn't know I had to grease the thing! The people on You Tube who made vampire stake tutorial videos aren't going to last long because they don't fire harden their stakes. Thanks to you my stakes will be far more superior!
Great video! Just what I wanted to know. I do have one question. You mentioned that the spear should be at least as tall as you are for safety, say six feet. In case you slip while using it for a walking stick you won't be impaled, which sounds reasonable. But what if you are going down a steep incline, reaching down the slope with the spear as you go. Now the tip could easily be lower than your head. Another good reason to make it eight feet! Or put some sort of cap over the point for walking around. My new Cold Steel Bushman arrived yesterday. I had an old wooden handle from some garden tool which fit perfectly in the handle... a jam tight fit with little effort. I've never held a real spear before. Standing there with a deadly weapon in my hands was the strangest feeling. It just felt right and fraught with possibilities and power. Could this be genetic memory since we have been using spears for at least a half a million years? There's a place in our brain for spears.
If u have a knife and u need a quick spear for hunting just tie the knife at the end if the stick no need to sharpen the stick u can just tie ur knife to the end of ur stick and this will work depending on how hard u secure the knife at ur stick if u do it poorly ur gonna get poor results and the knife may fall off on impact but if u do it well enough u will get a spear wich will not loosen the knife on impact

You can make a knife without any tools. Just need to find a sharp rock and use it to make other sharp stuff
With ur servival knifr or pocket knife when ever ur in forest u have servival knife and maybe a servival kit
If you don't have a knife use a sharp rock and baton, and to get a finer point you can "sand" it on a real pourus rock
You can still baton using a rock, just try to chip it into a wedge first by hitting it with another rock.
