    Thank you so much Tony...I've owned my E473 for an over a year now and had no Idea how to record( the owners manual is terrible and was of no help). Your video was a tremendous and a great instructional tool. I am 75yrs old and just need to remember all that I have learned. I feel I am finally making progress and will continue to watch your videos down the line.

    Yay! Thank you! :) This is really helpful for new owners of the PSR-E473. (Especially for those who love to play, but aren't necessarily tech-y). You really break down the operating steps in a comprehensive way. Your channel is truly the go-to for understanding this instrument and it's functions...so appreciated!. :)

      @@PianoTone Yes, I am! :) Very much! I bought a Casio CT-S1000V around the same time, so it's been fun comparing the two. Both have their strengths. Both are very nice. The CT-S1000V is small in size, (it actually will fit in a rifle case), so I've been taking it places with me. The interface is VERY different. My stationary keyboard is the PSR-E473. You're definitely streamlining my grasp of it, something I really appreciate because it cuts back on the time I would spend trying to understand a manual. I never liked studying. In a school context, watching your tutorials is like the difference between reading a dry history book and watching a great documentary on TV. ;) Lots more interesting, memorable, and understandable. I'm REALLY looking forward to your video on DAW recording! I was also wondering if you can record voice directly with the other tracks on the keyboard. I know you'll cover all the bases. You are a great help to anyone who finds this channel. Thank you!

    • @PianoTone

      @@ShellyAnderson0624 Thanks again for the kind words! No you can't record your voice with the other tracks because the multi-track recording is MIDI data only. Although I'm hoping that once you finish your multi-track song, you should be able to play it back and sing over it and record THAT as an audio file to the USB drive. I'll have to test that out (not sure yet if you can play back a MIDI song and record it to the audio section at the same time or not).

    Man im happy i came across your channel. My psr 473 just arived and i wanted to see how i make a song by using the tracks. I was under the impression that i could record my voices onto a track in a daw with the midi data , but you thankfully said i at least could record ot on a audio track (without midi data) Im waiting for my mpc to return from repair , meantime i can start learning to actualy play the keys myself. Again , great videos

      @@PianoTone sorry for the many Q , i am watching ur videos but in the meantime i want to make a song on the 6 tracks. I started 5 months ago as a newbee on the mpc (daw) There i work with sequences , bars , loops and im able to mute a track let say seq 4 - 5 and 8 - 9. But if want to record here on the board am i ment to play every track fully in 1 try without mistakes the full lenght ? And if im recording kick and snare from a drum kit am i able to ad hats afterwards on the same track ?

      @@ipainthouses3084 Hey again! Check out video 4 (backing track).th-cam.com/video/lVnBdlnouZE/w-d-xo.html. it will answer some of your questions. So what you can and cannot do does depend on whether you just want to do the whole process on the keyboard, or use that as a starting point then move it to a DAW. Because when you export your MIDI file to a DAW, it does come in as indvidual tracks so you can do whatever you want with them.
      If just working on the keyboard, you would need to mute the tracks in a perfect take yes; and for adding extra percussion you can do that, but it does take up a track.
      Hope that helps and have fun!

    Thanks again for a helpful video! I got me the EW425, am loving it more than most keyboards I’ve ever had! Having a lot of fun, finding it mostly user-friendly!
    I didn’t see that you covered this: when recording a Song using MIDI, the track records the reverb and chorus, but not DSP1. It also records your mod knob changes while playing!

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I never noticed that it didn't record DSP1! That seems pretty odd - thanks for the heads up! And yes the 425 is a pretty awesome keyboard, glad you're enjoying yours!

      Any chance you’ve figured out how to turn DSP1 on/off? They have a handy top panel button for DSP2, but no such luck for DSP1. I like having options: for example, for my go-to piano Registration, I start off with just the Main voice, and then kick in the Dual and/or Split voices to change things up. The only other way I see of doing this is with DSP1 and 2.
      Without a button to press, my workaround is to use Knob Control #3 for DSP1 and search out effects that use Knob 2 as a wet/dry control. I put the wet/dry at the center detente and adjust the delay or whatever to taste. Then I save this to a registration WITH KNOB 2 ZEROED OUT (fully counter clockwise). That way I can use Knob control #3, and bring up Knob 2 to center position, and voila, delay already set to taste!
      I can barely find any forum support for this board! Really surprised, this is a kick ass board by Yamaha, I would have thought there’d be 10x’s more forum topics available.
      Another thing I just figured out with this fantastic 76 note range: for doing Splits I can either do it at 45 or 52. Using 52 as the SP, that gives me an octave range for every note, plus a 3d octave for the E. Using 45 as SP, I’ve limited the range to an area I can mostly easily crawl up and down. I want to get fluent, without thinking, in generating bass lines, and at 45, top note of A, I’ve created a limited zone to train my hands to play bass!
      Also am keeping some Registrations to just doing Main/Dual/Split. Once I get involved with ACCMP or Creator Grooves, the OTS defaults it to voices I don’t want to use and end up not being able to go back to a Registration I spent a lot of time fine tuning. Haven’t figured out how to keep that from happening!

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@randalgoat The only way I know of to turn DSP1 on or off is buried in the menu system (oh Yamaha, why not ONE more panel button!???).
      I never used the OTS to select rhythms simply because of that; but yes the registrations will be super important, and there aren't unlimited #'s so - have to take some planning!
      For forums, keyboardforums.com has sections for different brands and there's also yamahakeyboardforum.com

      @@PianoTone yes, it’s an entry level, displaying brilliance in tone and keybed and features is the honey, but then you must cast a longing eye on the upgrade boards! I’d love to get the SX700. After loving the Korg Pa1000, I’m ready for Yamaha’s version. The 1000 was way too complex, I’m open to another way of having play-along auto accompaniment fun

    Thank you so much for your great reviews and instructional videos. I recently bought the PSR-EW425 based on yours and other positive reviewers. Loving it! This is an extremely timely video because I'm just trying to do my first recording. Hoping that your next video might give me a solution to a problem I'm having. I have an intro with a solo guitar. I don't start the accompaniment until many bars in. The problem is that the recording doesn't start until the style starts playing so the intro isn't recorded. I've tried different tricks like having the volume to 0, start the style then turn off sync start, but that didn't work. I believe that that isn't a problem for an audio recording, but I'd like it in MIDI format if possible. Thanks and keep up the great work!

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there! Thanks for the kind words! And I’m working on that very thing right now lol. I play a lot of piano ballads that start with just the piano and vocals, then instruments come in, and I’m trying to accomplish exactly what you’re describing. My hope is to be able to record a drum kit voice in a normal track, playing just the hi-hat or something like that; and then have the accompaniment start part way through.
      My backup plan is to use a rhythm style with minimal drums at the start - so far #60 (unplug) and #63 (gtr bld) have pretty minimal variation A’s so they’re not working badly - that might be the quick solution for you; try those styles starting in variation A, mute all style parts but drums, then bring in other style parts / switch to B as you need to.
      The other solution would be to record the drum track from where the drums come in; then export that midi file to a DAW like GarageBand and insert measures in front of the track and use the apps drums to add hi hats etc but that’s a lot of work.
      Hope that helps; let me know if you find any other styles that might work better. Thanks again for checking out the channel feel free to subscribe

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ok I just quickly tried something and it worked!
      1) select a drum kit voice I chose 299 rock kit; the F# above middle C is a hi hat of some sort
      2) I chose a style 73 blues rock
      3) I pressed REC then muted all the tracks for the drums
      4) I turned on the metronome
      5) waited for a 1 count and played the F# for a couple measures then unmuted the drums on a 1 beat and voila!!! Success!!! This will be in my next video

    • @GlennNakamura
      @GlennNakamura 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much! I will experiment with that. To be exact, I'm using Style 18 16 Beat for Careless Whisper starting with a solo guitar but also using the left hand chords for background without the sync start. I play this free format without being tied to a beat until I turn the sync start on during the guitar performance.

    Great video! I recently bought the PSR EW425. I want to do some recording (midi so I can move it to a DAW), and have a question. If I just want the drums from the style without the accompaniment, how would I do that? I will record keys, bass, and guitar on the other tracks. Do I just record the same way you did without playing anything else for the first track I record? And will that just record the drums on track 6? I realize that I would have to figure out how many measures that need to be recorded and make the appropriate changes from main A to main B while the style is being recorded. Please let me know if that’s the best way to just record the drums, so that I can record the other tracks separately. Thanks again for your channel. I just subscribed.

      Thanks a bunch! Check out the other videos I made in this series (links in description) especially moving MIDI recordings to a DAW (I use GarageBand on an iPad for the example, but the basic idea still applies). When you import your MIDI recording into the DAW, each part of the accompaniment comes in as its own track in the DAW so even if you record your song on the keyboard with more than just drums, you can just delete or mute those other tracks in your DAW.

  • @makaras
    @makaras ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi, Tony
    Great video as always - you're teaching me more about my new ew425 than the Yamaha manual can! One question which I assume is "no" - I am using a DAW (Cakewalk) to record different tracks - some from VSTs (I use "Synth 1" mostly) - and some from the Yamaha's own sounds. That all works fine. However am I right in assuming that what you show in this video can only be done with the Yamaha's own ON BOARD tones / and you cannot "save" any sounds you might be playing via a VST / DAW on to the Yamaha itself?

    • @makaras
      @makaras ปีที่แล้ว

      To clarify - if I have one of the Yamaha's "styles" playing on it - let's say "70s rock" as a drumbeat - then if I play notes on my VST - they cannot be recorded on to the Yamaha (only to the DAW)? Meaning the Yamaha can record the 70s rock style - but won't pick up whatever I play on my DAW?

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are correct (answer is no; at least as far as I know). The only way to record anything external would be to stream it in as audio, play along and record it as audio (not midi).

    • @makaras
      @makaras ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many thanks for your always quick response! To what you said about "recording audio" - I assume that means by using the DAW? Or can the Yamaha also record external Audio (in addition to Midi)? Edit - when you say "stream it in as audio" - the Yamaha can "hear" external audio and save it? If yes, any cable needed? Or the USB cable from my PC (and therefore my DAW) to the Yamaha is all that's needed?

      @@makaras The 425 has multiple ways to record high quality audio - you can record to a flash drive, or using the USB out (which sends audio as well as MIDI); that's how I record all my talking and playing videos on the keyboard - USB out straight to my iPhone and the camera app uses the direct audio instead of the built in mic.
      So if you had a finished track (other than what you want to play on the Yamaha) on your pc/tablet, you could play that (as audio) into the keyboard using the Aux in, and then record your play (and singing if you want) together with the incoming audio stream from your DAW into either a USB flash drive or back out of the USB to host port to another device recording the audio. It's not a multitrack recording, it all gets mixed together into one (so basically whatever is coming out of your DAW is essentially a backing track you're playing along with).
      Not sure if it will meet your needs but you could also record JUST what you're playing back INTO your DAW as another track (audio only) as you play along. The USB to host is 2 way audio, so you can also use this to hear the audio from your DAW instead of the aux in. If you set "Audio Loop Back" to off, that means the incoming audio from your daw does NOT get included in the outgoing audio going back to your DAW, so you could set up and record to a new audio track that way (but again, just audio not midi from the keyboard).
      Hope that helps!

    Hi. Great video. Does ew425 have a step input - an event editor function ? You can use step input
    to specify the length and pitch of each individual note when recording . If it does can you perform step input of

    • @PianoTone

      The tracks are only dark once you've recorded something to them. If you record a style it lands in A(6); then for subsequent recordings it will land in 1 unless you specify which track you are recording to by holding that track button down when you press record. The 13:00 mark talks about adding more tracks

I purchased a 425 after a 30 Yr break from keyboards, I had a DX7 & Casio CZ5000 back then & I'm having terrible issues trying to use this hardware, for example I thought I'd found out how to get arpeggio up but if I used the wheel it just started scrolling through voices, I only want to run through the 152 arpeggios but I'm finding it embarrassingly difficult to do almost anything & expected it to be relatively easy to work out how to do things yet it has left me feeling stupid.. sadly there is no quick guide to at least get idiots like myself to be able to use some basic functions before getting to the multiple uses of buttons etc..
    I've become house bound & wanted to get the best keyboard available in this price range but instead of making my quality of life better it has frustrated me & made me feel stupid which I simply did not expect having used pro boards. I guess I just didn't realise how far technology has left me behind!
