My parents were that way. Now I'm almost 40 years old, and I've got one of the sickest, most ridiculous gun collections you'll ever see. My knife collection isn't too shabby either.
Lol Here in finland Its kinda normal to own a knife Even if underage cause for example hunting, fishing, and hiking is pretty usual...i Had my First knife at the age of 6
TO PARENTS CONTEMPLATING ON BUYING THEIR SON OR DAUGHTER A BUTTERFLY KNIFE I own a butterflyknife, my parents bought it for me and I have owned if for over a year, if your kid wants one, I would say get a TRAINER butterfly knife (dull edges = CANT CUT) so just get them a trainer knife, cant cut a thing!
Yes! I remember watching your videos a very long time ago. Then life got in the way, so I had to put flipping away. Today, I use the keywords "low", "quality" and "balisong" to find your channel using this video. Thank you for your videos, old friend :)
+RyAn YaRn Depends which one you bought. I've bought 3 so far and one of em which was $3 has been amazing so far. I've had it for 6 months. Of course you need to take care of it and tighten the screws from time to time and lube as well but, it was better than the ones which broke on the first day. Those ones are duct taped lmao
Bear and sons make some decent models in the 30-40 dollar price range. They wont last forever, but they are not likely to have some sort of catastrophic failure in which the blade comes flying off. The first balisong I got as a kid was the cheapest bear model available. I played with it all the time and it lasted about six years before one of the tabs on the bottom of the safe handle started to crack and I stopped using it because it could no longer lock closed. I would highly recommend bear and sons if you are on a budget but don't want to accidentally launch a dislodged knife blade into your eye.
I bought a bulk package of Steel Oceans exactly like the one in this video years ago. Just got into flipping and haven't had any problems with the one I use. A few of the others were irreconcilable, so I dismantled them for the blades and made my own handles for them. Christmas gifts covered!
I understand the point that this guy is trying to convey, however he couldn't have done a worse job in demonstrating why the cheaper balisong was worse. Having owned a Benchmade, and a handful of crappy balisongs, you can spot the cheap ones. However, this is quite possibly the worst video on this subject, that I have seen. First off, in normal flipping conditions, you should never be bending your handle in that way. Almost all of the tension on the handle is longitudinal tensile pressure. That's like saying a laptop sucks because it wont bend 360 degrees. Second, with your complaint with the handle being able to bend together, that's kind of a basic property of steel. Third, show some faith and also try to bend your Benchmade. I know it wont bend, but it would be good for your newer balisong users to be able to see the quality of the Benchmade. And lastly, I own a knife that looks very similar to the one you broke, it was my first knife, and it still works perfectly to this day, so I'm not convinced that the knife you randomly destroyed deserved being destroyed.
Nate Notmyreallastname my first balisong was basically the same, and yesterday it snapped, y just had to change some parts, and i can still use it perfectly
I also have a balisong that looks like the one that got broken. I had it for two years until it got stolen. It's not comfortable to flip compared to other knives, but it's still pretty decent for its low price.
I didn't look at the date before I watched this vid and when you said "model 42 is going for around $175" i just thought WHERE IN THE HELL CAN I GET MINE NOW!!!
thank you so much. thanks to this video i know my knife is safe. i mean the rivets are a bit loose but i've talked to a few people and their knives are almost the same as mine rivet wise. but what im trying to get at is that i trust this knife a lot more now. thank you.
Thanks so much I was thinking about geting a bali and I saw a cheep one that looked nice and one that looked even better but was more expensive, now I know which one to get. thanks a million
+Jaaku DeMorgan I know... but what I mean is that you took good and compared it to nothing...... hard to explain... but here I go. basically gives the cheap no chance... blows it out of the water. yep... just said what the video is about
I am really impressed with how good are the knife reviewers in TH-cam. I would like that we had reviewers so good in TH-cam for every type of product out there.
This is easily the best video on how to choose your ballisong and it's true, with wear&tear and over the pass of time the cheap ones break or bend even slightly.
Yeah what I'm not getting is why would anyone use that much physical force on their knife? No one would put that much force by accident. Especially when you're flipping your knife.
Mate, they are unsafe, they sometimes brake when you're only spinning them arround. i had one cheap balisong, i was flipping it over and one srew fell out and the blade almost flew into my hand.
Thank you so much for making this video because I'm 15 and am just getting into balisongs (I want a 42 but I can't even find a real one on the internet) but anyway my dad said to get a cheaper one because it wasn't worth spending the money to get a good one but then I showed him this and a couple of other videos about cheap balisongs and he will let me get a good one.
I have a similar quality knife to the cheaper one. Thanks for showing me it can break so easily. This move I'm working on involves bending the knife in half.
Here in the phillipines there are two familiar balisong that filipino carry in thier pockets its called batangas bente nueve (29) and the smaller one is batangas bente dos (22) the blade is made of car bearings you can choose for blade types double bladed, single bladed , kriss and rambo
I remember about 3 years ago, i showed this to my mom, she got me a butterfly knife comb and butterfly knife practice one, those were cool and i never really cared to get the actual blade... But looking back, i might get another and a real one this time
I have no kids or anything but im just gonna make a point here. How about if some one has never tried any butterfly knife and just wants to try, it is not worth investing 100 to something that you just want to try (not all places have stores where you might test one, so internet is only option) that thing is shit but it will not brake in your hand if you are just doing some beginner flipping and testing do you even like the whole idea, and if you do then practice with that for awhile, and then get the real one. Then you know something about the knife and you wont brake your fingers with the real thing. And I happen to have one here that has plastic handles and I can flip it around no problem. And after many years of flipping it throwing it and dropping it it still is in one peace and has never broken, it's shitty and clunky but never broke.
Oh my god! What a piece of crap! I mean...a full grown man can break it by bending it sideways with all his might?!?!?!? How the fuck is that going to happen when you're flipping it?
my favorite balisong is one given to me by my grandfather before he passed away. He was into metal-works and loved all kinds of knives. He made it himself. Surprisingly it better than some of my more expensive knives.
there is no difference the only reason they're called butterfly knives I'm guessing is because some idiot couldn't pronounce balisong and you started calling it the butterfly knife which is weirdo because there already is a knife named the butterfly knife before these even came out.
butterfly is an insect, balisong is a filipino knife. nope just kidding, butterfly knife is the english name for balisong. balisong is the actual name.
It became nicknamed "Butterfly Knife" when Benchmade started making them and introduced them to the American market YEARS ago. Benchmade's logo is a Butterfly and the name sort of took off.
Alexander Moffitt Knives are a pretty bad self defense tool in general. And how are they useless in every situation? You can cut things just like every other knife.
Alexander Moffitt Nevermind, just saw your "Balisongs are all pieces of shit." Looks like you're just bias for no reason. You have any facts or logic to back up your bullshit claims?
Sally Butter Pants No knives are good for self defense situations. In self defense you want to disable your attacker to prevent them from harming you, knives will not disable someone, especially if they're getting adrenaline. And you better hope to god that the other person doesn't have a knife, because if you get in a knife fight then both of you are going to end up very injured. Also if you know how to open a balisong in a quick way then there is pretty much no difference between a balisong or any other knife in that situation.
I have a bear and son cutlery butterfly knife, black handles and tanto blade, Haven't had any issues yet except when flipping the thing that locks it shut/open will get in the way.
My father bought be a butterfly knife for my birthday on my 14 birthday. As I was flipping it the handle broke and the knife flew across the room. We took it back to the flea market and the guy was very nice and gave us a new one. That one broke the same day we bought it too. Finally we bought a Bear and Son balisong and one more cheap bali. I taped the handle of the cheap one and it hasn't broke since and same with the bear and son knife. I totally recommend getting an expensive knife because the cheap one cut my finger down to the tendon when it had broken off.
First, they are not butterfly knifes. They are balisong. Second, yes, as someone who has had several balisong over the years and currently carries a limited edition Benchmade, yes, worry about safety. Proper technique and knife safety is the difference between the occasional nick and having fingers covered with scars, or worst yet, stabbed by your own knife. There are lots of precautions one takes using a balisong for safety , knowing which handle to hold being the most important. Handling any weapon requires safety, and the more dangerous or more difficult the weapon is to handle, the more one should be concerned. If you go to professionally train with any martial arts weapon, be it a katana, a balisong or some form of kusari, the first thing you will be taught is proper handling and safety.
98mixalhs No they are not. The term Butterfly Knife for Balisong is slang and not proper. It comes from Benchmade being one of the first US companies to ever make one. They never called them Butterfly Knives, but properly call them Balisong, however the Benchmade trademark is a butterfly, (see: plus.google.com/u/0/118080533608559367025/posts) and was long before they started making Balisong, so people got the knives, saw the way they worked, the logo on the blade, put two and two together and started calling them butterfly knives. They are not. Butterfly knives look like THIS: www.blitzsport.com/Steel-Chinese-Butterfly-Knives , The Balisong is a weapon from the Escrima style of martial arts in the Phillipines. Butterfly Knifes are from the Wushu style of martial arts and are from China. You can call them Butterfly Knives all you want, but it is not the proper name for a Balisong and never has been. It's like calling a handgun an Iron: It's slang. To a seasoned martial artist or a expert on weapons, it just makes you look uneducated to call a balisong a butterfly knife.
Kamiel Foskey Um well usually people call it a butterfly knife, so calling it a balisong and kinda makes u sound like a person that acts smart just to impress people or show that u know more than them.
Mark Plays And most people call Katana a Samuri Sword. Does not make it right. And frankly, given a choice between looking intelligent or like an idiot, I'll pick intelligent any day of the week. The only people that ever seem to look at being intelligent as educated as being pretentious pricks are idiots and I'd rather just not deal with idiots in my life if I can avoid it.
Meh...Why would you give 175 bucks for a knife when you can give 200 bucks for a virtual one in Cs:go.I do not understand why do you hate the real world so much and buy knife that don't exist and you can't touch in the so called world Life...I do not understand you....
I bought a balisong at a flea market in San Antonio for 8 bucks and it feels pretty solid to me. Doesn't bend for anything and the only thing that I can find wrong with it was that you have to squeeze the handles to close the latch.
Steven Hernandez I actually know how to fix that you can remove washers if you have screws on your blade handles and it can help. Also if you would like you could sand down the notches too
Thank you for this clip. I got a really cheap one as my first knife at about 6 bucks that resembles the one that broke. I think I'll tape the blade just for safety now...
mine is the same as DNYDrum's sounds.. and while watching this video i tried like hell to bend it.. it did not budge.. but i am glad to see that there is someone on yt that isn't just glorifying blade flipping.. safety first, then team work :D keep up the good work.
I recently bought a balisong for 11 dollars, it's made pretty well with stainless steel and titanium, however the hinges (or bolts, I don't know what they are called.) is made of copper. The blade is also blunt, so I only get minor cuts from the bite side. But I have difficulty with more intermediate tricks because I'm a bit nervous because it feels like the bolts are getting weaker...have I made a poor choice? It seemed fine at the time.
I have a Tiger USA 9" trainer. I've only had it for about 9 hours, but it flips like a champ already. It came a little tight, but it's loose now. The only complaint, is that the screws came a little bit loose, but after tightening, then bam, perfect. Also, the safe handle wobbles a tad bit, but still makes it it's own knife. How much did I spend? only 9.39, free shipping.
when unfolded they are like a fixed blade, but they can be folded, and put in you pocket safely. also its an art to flip a knife like this, especially when there is that little chance to get hurt, i cant explain it, but its amazing feeling when you nail that flip you have been trying to do for hours on end. plus it is technically useful for self defiance
what trick is going to iccor that would cause u to use sooo much pressure that you snap the handle in half? (seirouse question i have my first balisong trainer coming in the mail and i dont want to do whatever trick that is
what are your thoughts on the local made "traditional" philippine balisongs? I have one that has solid bronze handles and a very simple design through the whole knife.
Bear butterfly knives are awesome! I have a 114B that I've had for a few months now and I've beat the crap out of it trying to learn how to flip. Needless to say its still in very usable condition. It has a few scratches and nicks but it still functions like it was new.
My little cousin wants a balisong super bad (I'm an owner, and refuse to give him one) and i showed him this for him to get an understanding of the knife. When you killed the no name brand balisong he started crying. Good stuff man
I cant believe this knife is already known outside the philippines, im so proud of my islands. What an awesome knife we made. They also made a benchmark version, i mean wow.
For real. My balisong was one that my brother got at a gas station and never really learned tricks with. I bought it from him and started learning tricks. Needless to say, when it actually started getting flipped around enough, the bite handle came clean off. Very dangerous leaving the blade that exposed in the middle of a flip. If I was doing a more complex trick, that could've ended bad. This is one thing you definitely don't want to cheap out on.
@cutlerylover Actually, the french invented it but Spanish sailors were the ones to bring it to the Philipines. They used balisong because they could make the handles out of non-sparking materials and they were safe for use on boats around cannons.
I bought a cheap homemade balisong from Taal, Batangas last October 1998 for only $5 at that time. It was a full stainless balisong. We used it as a kitchen knife to cut slices of meat and vegetables. Now, it’s October 2018 and that knife is still being used in our kitchen. Have you ever used your expensive high end knives the way i abused my cheap $5 knife? We only clean it with soap and water. Sometimes we lubricate it with used cooking oil. Now, which one is worthed? Your super expensive knives which stays inside the box most of the time or my cheap $5 balisong which you described as a crap cheapo?
what are your thoughts on some of the model of knife tht come with a blunt blade on purpose for practicing flipping , ive been curiou gor years and Ive always wanted to learn how to dp this , but I am a little wuss about being cut , and when i saw the blunt ones (they look really cool) i was like oh hell yeah. I dont know if youve ever seen em but i qas wondering i theyre like the cheap one in this video and not worth buying cuz you only specified one major flaw about these knives so i was wondering.
Nice to know that I bought a really nice Balisong for 10$. I've had it for like 3 months and it works perfectly, and it is made out of stainless steal. I clean it with cleaning wipes all the time.
@Tommins12 Most commonly the pin that holds the handles to the blade come out and are annoying to repair and tighten (There are other reasons but thats the most common for cheap-O's)
Bend it, break it! Man I can't believe that one was such crap that cutlerylover was able to snap off one of the scales with his bare hands! I plan on adding an assortment of balisongs to my growing collection, but they will most likely be from Benchmade or Frost Cutlery. When I was a kid one of my cousins received a bali from Frost as a Christmas gift from the woman who later became his wife. To this day he still has it, and it is still in the same shape it was in when he took it out of the box. I really do appreciate the video, though, since people do need to know that when it comes to knives you really do get what you pay for. High quality knives may be expensive, but they will last a LONG, LONG time while providing many years of service to the owner.
I've got one of the larger Bear & Sons balisongs and love the hell out of it... but it broke pretty unexpectedly yesterday. I checked it for cracks pretty regularly, but I dropped it on carpet and one part of the handle broke near the blade. Even so, if you're looking into flipping I'd probably recommend it as a first knife. My previous one was a smaller Bear & Sons (and ended up breaking in a similar way), but the larger one felt better and was easier to flip. It took over a year for it to break, but needless to say I'm looking into a new knife. Sadly this model 42 that he praises her is no longer available. They have newer models that I'm guessing are amazing... but they're over 300 dollars. We'll have to see how dumb I decide to be with my tax return.
I bought my first balisong recently and it's basically a 20$ stainless steel knockoff of that benchmade :). It's exactly the same nut with a different handle-hole pattern and instead of titanium it's stainless steel. Glad I made a good (ish) buy!
Another point on safety would be that the screws back out sometimes mid flip with the cheapos (learned that with my first before getting a (real) jaguar, still cheap but an excellent start in my opinion).
Can you please send me a link on where to purchase the titanium balisong you have there, it looks Mean!!!! Love it! It's kinda hard to hear the name of the blade. So a link would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot and Great video!
175$ benchmade 42? I wish. I wish so god damn hard.

Trainers doesn't have ''dull edges'' it simply doesn't have a blade...
Or you can put electrical tape on the blade, practice with that, and then take it off to show off to friends.
Michael Junker Or just buy a trainer, there's some dumb kids out there....
Fair enough.
The way I do it is just put some electrical tape over the blade of a regular balisong so I can take it off at a later date.
I bought a St Case Hardened one for 300 € Hope its not crap

Well that is what the video is about? Quality vs Crap. Duh

Bradley kimura's are great, super sharp tho. Around $100
thanks for this video i appreciate it cuz i showed them vid after my first 1 fell apart and they r gonna let me save up 4 a bm model 42 thank u!!!
All your points are very true quality is always worth more! I've used both it make a real difference what you buy
Why can I buy a Leatherman for 40$ that is incredibly durable and comes with 14 functions yet that high quality bailsong is 175$ -.-
I wouldn't have a balisong for anything, they're useless In a self defense situation or pretty much any situation where a knife is needed.
***** Balisongs are good for things like tricks, but I guess not self defense situations
Also if you know how to open a balisong in a quick way then there is pretty much no difference between a balisong or any other knife in that situation.
just get a trainer knife with a dull blade
I totally recommend getting an expensive knife because the cheap one cut my finger down to the tendon when it had broken off.
lol flips around a butterfly knife, is worried about safety
Kamiel Foskey balisong and butterfly knifes are the same
98mixalhs No they are not.
Kamiel Foskey
Um well usually people call it a butterfly knife, so calling it a balisong and kinda makes u sound like a person that acts smart just to impress people or show that u know more than them.
Also if you would like you could sand down the notches too
Evan Kane your supposed to squeeze it
Thank you for this clip.
I got a blunt bladed Bear Cutlery for 40$ a few days ago and it seems to be working fine, no bending yet anyway.
I was flipping around my balisong once it's the same type as that one in it just fell apart while I was flipping
Thank you for this video Jeff, gonna show it to my dad and probably gonna get a benchmade.
How much did I spend? only 9.39, free shipping.
when unfolded they are like a fixed blade, but they can be folded, and put in you pocket safely. also its an art to flip a knife like this, especially when there is that little chance to get hurt, i cant explain it, but its amazing feeling when you nail that flip you have been trying to do for hours on end. plus it is technically useful for self defiance
i bought a stainless steel balisong for 15 euros and i'm quite lucky because in italy they are quite hard to get. pretty solid, happy with it
"You see that?" "That is not good." LMAO!
Dude, throwback!
You should've tried bending the Benchmade one, to show the strength of it.
what trick is going to iccor that would cause u to use sooo much pressure that you snap the handle in half? (seirouse question i have my first balisong trainer coming in the mail and i dont want to do whatever trick that is
iv bought a benchmade $6 balisong and its amazing and has lasted me a long time
Thank you, this was really informative and helpful.
what are your thoughts on the local made "traditional" philippine balisongs? I have one that has solid bronze handles and a very simple design through the whole knife.
Bear butterfly knives are awesome! I have a 114B that I've had for a few months now and I've beat the crap out of it trying to learn how to flip. Needless to say its still in very usable condition. It has a few scratches and nicks but it still functions like it was new.
Actually what got me to know the knife.. the videos though, are what made me want one.
Thanks man this is real helpful. Nice job :)
My little cousin wants a balisong super bad (I'm an owner, and refuse to give him one) and i showed him this for him to get an understanding of the knife. When you killed the no name brand balisong he started crying. Good stuff man
straight to the point. good video. do you recommend the benchmade 60 series?
What would be the difference between a Benchmade 42 balisong and a Benchmade 32 balisong (or a 62)? What defines them?
the problem with this is the likelyhood or either of them breaking is pretty low, id be more worried if it was a zinc handle.
What exact model of Steel Ocean is used, and is it still in stock? If it is, can someone please send me a link as to where I can find one?
I cant believe this knife is already known outside the philippines, im so proud of my islands. What an awesome knife we made. They also made a benchmark version, i mean wow.
I prefer those looking balisong though. Love those classic look.
This is one thing you definitely don't want to cheap out on.
funny, I have a custom made phillipino balisong that looks a lot like that wood handled one
well played, sir.
@cutlerylover Actually, the french invented it but Spanish sailors were the ones to bring it to the Philipines. They used balisong because they could make the handles out of non-sparking materials and they were safe for use on boats around cannons.
can i get a link to the balisong the link in the description was jus a amazon search for balisong
Can you make a video on which cheap everything is a good starter?
Like cheap balisongs, cheap lighters, cheap folding knives... and so on?
I just recently bought a Benchmade 87 the quality is really really good like wow good
Once you mastered the trainer knife,I would highly suggest buying a Bradley Kimura V to VII
What should i do if i want a balisong but ma parents want to give me a cheap one that looks fragile
What do you say about Benchmade SD110? It is cheap, but it is also made of titanium.
my butterfly knife has the hook that keeps it closed on the right instead of the left does that mean it's made for a left handed person?
Flip the balisong over and now it's on the left side! Flip it over again and walla it's on the right side
question how is it all of a sudden going to break off like that when you are flipping it.. like it took you a while to break it
Bend it, break it!
I wasn't sure of what kind of balisong I had, so i tried bending it. Now my thumbs hurt and I still don't know if I have a "good" balisong.
Those knives are very great for boring, show off,anti-stress item...OF COURSE it's put so much hearth in the videos:)
magneto in the house breaking metal knives like a boss
Hey jeff i was wondering what you would suggest for a beginner to balisongs. What life should I purchase in the mindset of learn ing to flip?
Can you please send me a link on where to purchase the titanium balisong you have there, it looks Mean!!!! Love it! It's kinda hard to hear the name of the blade. So a link would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot and Great video!
I got that bail song but the color is a faded rainbow
i dont know anything about butterfly knifes but i got a rostfrei butterfly knife for 5 bucks is that good?
@BaconIn3D just remember, they didnt invest the knife, but they did make it part of their lifestyle
HAHAHAHA I laughed my ass off when you snapped it. I was not expecting that XD.
Cutllerylover, please make a review on Böker plus Titanium Balisong!
Do you know where can i buy a nice balisong like the one shown in the video?(not the cheap one)
