Gill really needed this love; he’s my favorite of the street fighter antagonists because there’s at least something more to him than being the blandest character ever. BUT EVIL! He’s a lot like sagat where it felt wrong he was so mediocre. I wish his retribution gimmick wasn’t so hard to pull off. Alex’s clean hit which is likely where it takes it’s influence from is very seamless to get so all these hoops for the inconsequential trait of “he hits hard” when I can’t think of anyone who doesn’t hit that hard was ironically enough pretty weak.
That’s why a lot of people would be bothered If Bison became the main villain again in SF6. Imo they should just make him a what-if character like Evil Ryu. The premise could be Bison being revived somehow, just to have him as a playable character on the roster without being canon. They had a bunch of mini story modes with every character in SFV. Alternatively they can have Bison’s lingering psycho power possess ed and falke creating an evil versions of them. Evil versions of characters tend to do well for capcom. People are still talking about violent ken, who may come back if psycho power becomes a story point in SF6. In the SFV Oro story it is confirmed that the psycho power still lingers and that it can either be used to destroy or save the world.
@@t.w.o.3081 honestly Ed should just have the moves with his own spin on them no pun intended considering every bison move involves spinning or flipping.
Great summary of the changes. I would add just two things. First, Gill can trigger Retribution on block/whiff with VS1 if the opponent has the opposing elemental (f.e you're already on ice when the fire comet AoE catches you) already inflicted on him, which triggers a blockstun animation unique to Gill. Like all occasions of triggering Retribution it gives a lot of meter also it makes you absurdly plus. It is +46 OB without VT and +47 OB with VT. So you kinda get a triple dash if you want to go in (being --2 or -1 respectively) or do a charged (b)HP in their face, install the ice trap for a free mixup if you're already close. Or just your full screen bullet hell game goes even scarier. Second, if you pick VS1 the default fire meteor AoE script trigger if they block the VT1 flame javelin as low as possible or barely whiffs. Which most time gives you some extra status effects and makes you pretty plus very far away which is nothing major but can be handy when you want to zone people out with a lifelead. The grimy stuff comes with the first mentioned changed it triggers some grimy setplay (the flame javelin has some funky hitboxes) where Gill have like 50 frames to decide what he wants to with you. It is hard to set up intentionally (needs active VT, VS1 and installed ice status effect from your hard earned meter) which severely hinders its practicality, but if it happens can bamboozle people very easily.
That Thumbnail captures perfectly how it felt to fight Gill back in 3rd Strike, AKA "Let me be the blesser of all sou-- BSSSSHSHSHSHSHSSHHSHSSHSHSH-- *KO*
Gill feels like he was designed to not have parry or second vskill at this point because of how essential vs1 is. Such a unique character limited by the V system. I hope he makes it in to future games with simpler systems.
I think vs2 is still good since it makes him go from a cuphead boss to a high risk high reward character which makes him versatile and helps in some matchups
That meteor change makes VT1 a great deal stronger. Now Gill gets something to do after knockdowns with either VT. Gill is now a seriously dangerous character who doesn't have the classic issue of low-tier meter dependent characters. He's always been one of my favorites due to how flashy and dynamic he can be, and I'm loving it.
Now with the meterless retributions from charged heavies and VS1, Gill’s retribution EX mechanic should finally feel like it’s putting him ahead in meter instead of just paying for the mechanic everyone gets meterlessly anyway
I was hoping he would get his cr.MP>cr.HP target combo from arcade mode and his headbutt back from SF3 but the changes he got are much better than what I expected
At this point, if Gill isn't one of the main antagonists going forward, I will be sad. His Retribution mechanic is extremely unique, and his character is really well done for a final boss, plus him being the boss means we moved past SF3, which would be dope af. Also, if SF3 ever gets a modern revision, I would love to see Retribution return. Imagine playable Gill with parries and Retribution.
Agreed that VS1 should've been that strong from the beginning. If you were not winning the pressure game, it was really hard to land a retribution: so you effectively had no crush counter in many situations such as a counter poke. That was too big of a hole in his game to not do something to make up for it. He looks like he'll be fun now and better at space control.
These changes are awesome but kind of like the EX meter gain I feel Gill didn't go all the way. Some characters have gimmicks that let them cheat the game. Poison, Retribution, Level Up, Menat Crystal Ball (kind off), Gief SPD. But I feel Capcom is afraid of making these cheats to strong so they compensate by making the rest of the kit ass (most of the time). Retribution when it first came out is an awesome concept but man did it suck. You gave up crush counters, the rest of Gill's kit was ass, and you had to pay meter to even use it. So here are 2 more changes I wish Gill got 1) When your not in trigger, you build v meter from retribution instead of EX meter. When your in trigger, you build EX meter. This puts the meter in equal but opposite which is gills entire character. And it gives Gill a way of v meter build to make up for lack of crush counters. 2) Give the charge effect to more heavy normals giving Gill more options for meter less attribute state.
For number 2, you do know that they have st.HP and f.HP “charged,” versions which apply the element, right? Unless you meant you want ALL of his normals with elements on them to apply the effect?
@@robertgeorge4602 gotcha. I feel like that’d be tough to balance, having sweep leave the opponent in fire state for example sounds a little ridiculous to me. I think adding a charged version of f.HK and b.HK could be good, although idk how useful it would actually be on b.HK
What a thumbnail.

A great list of changes for Gill. He really came together this patch. Praise be the Icey Hot Man

Gill was so much fun to play these buffs do be bussin
I think gameplay-wise Gill is by far the most interesting character in this game. I’m glad he’s not a meme anymore.
Gill is the most fun sfv character I’ve played so far
Finally, Gill lives up to his sf3 appearance
