I'm doing mine now.itd a 2001 with not even 30k.i swear mine was taken apart once as it's missing the crank belt bracket ! Unless some don't have that ?. I got the waterpump on and thought that was a struggle.is the dri er side cam pulley under spring tension and the passenger free to move ? Mine is like that .
@@rustdawg7364 as far as I know, they should all have crank belt brackets! Yeah there will be a bit of tension depending on where everything is on the timing
Great video! Very well explained. This is something that I can do myself next time around. I just replaced the radiator, fan assembly and thermostat. Also, the hoses including the bypass. You have explained it very well and it should be pretty easy to do! Thanks for taking the time to make this video! By the way, it’s a good call to replace the clamps with the gear type. If you want even better, get the ones that are fully stainless steel, including the screw. Great around a salty environment. Thanks again and cheers!
Happy to hear that the video is helpful! It is definitely an intimidating job but take your time and go you got it! Ooo yeah, I have those on my STi turbo piping and they are great clamps, a bit expensive though haha
@@Chase_Schrader Thanks, Chase! All very valuable information from a fellow Subaru enthusiast! I have a couple quick questions, if you have time. Did you have trouble getting the harmonic balancer off? Also did you check the bolts on the oil pump, as so many suggest? Not that I am diving into it anytime soon but I want to be ready when I do! Best-N
Always have time for my viewers questions! I didn’t have any issues with the harmonic balancer because I had to replace it about a year ago when the rubber disintegrated on my old one haha, and for the oil pump bolts I just checked them to make sure they weren’t loose but I didn’t re-torque them
I'm doing the timing belt/water pump on my 2001 Legacy. I bought cam seals because, heck why wouldn't I replace them being this deep in... you've got me a concerned now about getting the cam gears off! Nevertheless, knowledge is power - great video, thanks for taking the time to film!
Haha that's what I thought as well! Hopefully, you will have better luck then me, this Forester has had a rough life haha! No worries glad it could be helpful
For that cam pulley bolt. Penetrating oil and a small torch. Alternate oil and heat 4 or 5 times. Take 20 minutes. Be patient. Next, with the socket or wrench on the bolt, just tap on the driver handle with a hammer for several minutes. Don't try to force it using an extension.
Mr. Schrader, I have a question... I am changing the timing belt and water pump. I have ordered the tool to hold the harmonic balancer but the tool is supposed to have a reinforcement ring but no one is sending it with the tool. Is it possible to do the job correctly without that ring?
Hmmm, I don't even use the tool to hold the harmonic balancer as I just stop the engine from turning over with the screwdriver so I'm not 100% sure but I thing you should be good to do it without the ring!
Thank you. Your so helpful. I had a hard time finding the torque specs and one had even said the Harmonic Balancer is only 94lbs but 2 others said 125 and 133. Also before you put a new tensioner on are you supposed to bleed it? Some say yes and some never talk about that part.
It will depend on the engine in the car, if you are doing everything to the service manual like me, it’s 94lbs for the 2L and 132.7 for the 2.5L! Nawww, the service manual never mentions to bleed, and as long as when you pull the pin, it provides tension you’re good.
One thing I didn't quite get. You said at one point to put a screwdriver and you pointed towards the back of the engine. Could you please explain? Thanks
As mentioned at the start of the video we removed the balancer when we did the valves, there is an access hole in the bell housing where you can stick a screwdriver in a hole in the flex plate to stop it from turning over, there is the whole process here: th-cam.com/video/3DoiJNu0vmk/w-d-xo.html
My friend, your video really needs to be "for idiots". I came to see how exactly you take the belt off, and you did a "the belt just came off". HOW????????
How did your timing belt go?

Thanks, I definitely tried heat and penetrant haha, I'll try the tapping next time
That's how it's done, nice work Chase.
Thanks, these SOHC are easier than I thought!

Screwdriver?
Did you use the cam holder tool when trying to remove the bolt? good video btw
I didn't have access to one, it probably would of worked but I didn't feel like waiting a week for it haha, thanks!

auto is 96 ft lbs, MT is 133 ft lbs according to the 2009 factory service manual
Ah interesting, different years have different numbers I guess haha

What is the timestamp on that? Was it when I was stopping the engine from turning over?
Around 17:50. Yes.

Why does it still sound like the pistons are slaping
Becuase they are still slapping, it has 400,000km on the engine so some slap is expected.

If you are following the instructions and removing the idlers the belt should just come off. If it’s tensioned then you might be missing a step
