One of the best looking bowls I have seen on YT...my opinion. Good simple design and easy to follow your progress. You have a great eye for design as can be seen on your other work too. Keep it up and load more. Thanks!
That's awesome work your doing. I really like this type of woodworking. I think I will be moving in that direction. Thanks for the inspiration. Keep up the good work.
I've been considering getting into power carving as a hobby to scratch that hands on creative itch I've been having. I came across your videos in the research process and got even more excited about this endeavor. Your review videos gave me the information I needed to insure I did this right. I look forward to completing my first bowl (unless there is something else you would recommend for a novice to start with). Either way.... Thanks.
Awesome! Makes me really happy to hear that Ii might've encouraged you if even in just a small way. A bowl could be a nice start and people seem to really like wood bowls! Really though, more than what project to start on, the big thing is just to start. Have fun, get a feel for whatever tools you have available and have at it. Practice on cheap wood, have fine and don't put pressure on yourself to make a perfect piece right out of the gate.
No problem, Mike! It's a pretty cool tool. You might find abortech's channel helpful. They have a bunch of demo videos including how to it and how to sharpen it really easily. Also in a week or two I'm going to do a video where I show all the different tools I've experimented with for power carving, from budget to expensive.
Hey man, I'm digging the power carving stuff. The wine box and wall art you made in your last video were really cool. Keep up the good work. Subscribed!!
Great video man. Love the bowl. You should wood turn a few things to go with it. Salad bowl and bowls to serve it in. I'm gonna start doing stuff like that this year. Thx for the inspiration.
Thanks for checking it out David! I definitely plan to get into turning at some point. It’s just a whole other favor hole of tools and what not so I haven’t taken the plunge. Hoping to get into it this year!
my tip of the day is if you cut the bowl out of the template after carving the bowl set your band saw blade to about 30% angel then you good to just sand and not have to then recave the outter edge. also i cut the outter 1st so you can feel the depth of the bowl as you carve the inside out. so outside 1st inside 2nd.
Very interesting and informative video, but I could hear very little of what was said, due to the unnecessary music. You have a very nice voice, we would like to hear a little more of it! :-)
You have an awesome sense of shaping!! The bowl has awesome proportions and looks very very nice! Do you have a recommendation for the angle grinder? How much Watts recommended for the machine and what you get one with adjustable speed?
The Salad Bowl finish is exactly the same as their regular varnish. people got wigged out with the whole Varnish/Food thing...so they re-labeled the can. I used to use Salad bowl finish as well until I found out that fact from one of their salesmen.
Yeah - after I used it I looked at the can a little more closely and realized it’s just a thinned down poly. That’s why it says not to use it for cutting boards and the like because you could ingest flakes of finish since it’s a film finish. After I finished the bowl for the video I found some more scratches so I had to sand it all back, and ended up with a Beezwax/mineral oil finish which I use for most of my food stuff. I did switch from that to making my own finish from organic Beezwax and organic toasted walnut oil though to get the most natural finish possible for those who would be wigged out with synthetics. I personally don’t have a huge issue with them, but enjoy using the wax/oil finishes for ease and also enjoyed making my own.
Beautiful bowl by the way...absolutely beautiful. . Nice job. The wood whisperer says that he dilutes tung and puts one coat on to help seal the fibers...then finishes with mineral oil/beeswax thin after the tung dries. . I have used diluted tung oil on gun stocks..... 25% and 75% mineral spirits to get more penetration and it works really nice. I then go to a 50%/50%.....then 75 % tung / 25% mineral spirits, then finish with 100% Tung. I just tried my first cutting board with 25% T / 75% MS then finished with beeswax and mineral oil. so far so good. Keep up the great work.
Good to know! Thanks for sharing. I’ve been thinking about trying my hand at a gun stock but I don’t know if I have the skills for that yet...someday perhaps. The pull length on my bolt action is just a little too long but I can’t bring myself to hack into the stock one.
Awesome bowl carter! Cant afford the Festool RAS 115 sander - is it hard bottomed? And is the only way you could sand the inside of the bowl, becuase the sandpaper overlapped? (Im trying to find something to sand the inside of bowls with, right now Im using a drill with 2 inch pads which isnt ideal as the drill is tiring to hold) - Can you advise?
Great video and I love the bowl and contrasting woods. Have you ever heard of the Orbicut carving bit that works with a regular drill? I've looked at some videos and read some reviews, but I can't tell if it works that well or not. Just wondering if you have tried it. Thanks!
Should definitely give it a shot! Once you get used to the process it's pretty simple. In a week or two in going to do a review/demo on all the tools I've tried including some budget ones.
+Thuan Duong I'm not sure which you're talking about - if it was earlier in the video it's the Festool RAS115. If it's later in the video, it's the Festool RO90. Both are great sanders. For the RAS115, you can do something similar by adding a resin fiber sanding disc to a variable speed grinder.
Nice bowl and great vid. I been traditional hand carving and then power carving, on and off, here in the uk for 35 years and I'm getting back into it after accidentally becoming a builder for a few years! I think the arbortech industrial blade is much quicker for initial roughing out, then the turbo plane for refining the shape before sanding. I have recently got the arbortech ball gouge, which i at first thought was a bit of a gimmick, but it is great for undercutting and doing smaller bowls and hollow forms, and if used gently and carefully, can create a texture that can pass for hand gouge tool marks (after a light sanding) . Do you use this attachment? It's slower than the discs of course, but is a great addition to my power carving arsenal! Keep up the good work, be safe and have fun : )
+Jules Webb Thanks for the tip, Jules! I actually have a blade similar to the arbortech industrial that I’ve been asked to review called the DBX cutter - has round carbide replaceable blades like the industrial but has 6 instead of two. Hoping that works out well! There’s also the chainsaw style blades the likes of the Lancelot by King Arthur Tools which I have, but because it’s so easy to overdo it in power carving I actually don’t mind the extra time the turboplane takes. We’ll see how it compares to the DBX cutter though.
Carter Wilson Workshop you're right carter, it is easy to over do it with the discs! I look forward to your review of the dbx cutter, although it may not be available here in the uk. Keep the vids coming, as I'm doing similar work to you at the moment !
+Jules Webb The new DBX cutter I’m talking about actually comes from the UK. :) I’m going to be posting a review of it in the next week or two, as well as a video of a walnut trench bowl I hope to use it on.
At 1:26 and following you do something incredibly dangerous. You are cutting the inside slope of the bowl with the cutter head facing your body. Your shirt and body are way too close to the spinning blade. What would happen is that it would grab your shirt pull it in and start wrapping it around the shaft and pull you into the blade. In an instant it would wrench the entire unit right out of your hands and you would be seriously injured. And the angle grinder doesn't have a momentary switch so it will keep running though you are no longer controlling it. You do nice work but you have to do it safely so you can keep making new things for us to see.
So what would be the right procedure, please? I don't understand what's wrong exactly at this exact video spot and what should be the right approach. Thanks a lot.
I was using wood that was already dry so there were no issues there. There was a little warping in the boards before I glued them up from the drying process, but I corrected that with the jointer and planer before glue up. I haven't done any green wood carving so I've not had really any issues with warping or cracking.
Personally I don't think it would be easier to use a router, especially given the shape of the inside. From what I've seen, router-made bowls tend to have straight/vertical sides. Nothing wrong with that but not the look I was going for here. :)
+Carter Wilson Workshop cool. was thinking about making a change, cuff link, wallet tray which pretty much would resemble this and I'm just trying to figure out a good way to go with the Idea. thanks for the info.
check out kirjes sanding system for finishing your work for bowls and hard to reach spots king arthur tools do the same tool in the USA 4 years in and it saved my months of work and made be $$$$$ due to the finish it gives.
One of the best looking bowls I have seen on YT...my opinion. Good simple design and easy to follow your progress. You have a great eye for design as can be seen on your other work too. Keep it up and load more. Thanks!
You are an inspiration to many. I hope you don't mind but I stole this idea for making some bowls myself. Thanks for the informative video.
Great job! Beautiful look
Thank you!
Beautiful. Great job. Very inspiring.
Thank you!
I like it! Gonna make one soon. Thanks for the inspiration. Remember to hold on tight to the turboplane!
Great looking bowl . I have the arbor tech and it works great.
Amazing work Carter!
Thank you, Nicolas!
Very nice work. Made it looks easy.
That's awesome work your doing. I really like this type of woodworking. I think I will be moving in that direction. Thanks for the inspiration. Keep up the good work.
Awesome video and very nice work.
Beautiful build
Great video Carter! That blade has been on my shopping list for ages, looks like a lot of fun to use
Thank you, Robin! It is definitely a lot of fun. Messy...but fun! Allows for all sorts of shapes and what-not.
No music please! Can’t hear important stuff like what wheel you’re using at specific times but awesome bowl!!
Beautiful and very informative. Definitely getting a turboplane.
Nice job. Good instruction, thanks for sharing.

Cool bowl. Thanks for showing the arbor tech. I have one on order and I've never used one.

Great job just got both Arbor Tech planers the Mini and the flat
Another Great Video Carter! Thumbs Up Buddy! I'm gonna have to try this with my Carving wheels! Have A Super Week!..... Gus
Thank you sir and thanks for the sub!
Hey man, I'm digging the power carving stuff. The wine box and wall art you made in your last video were really cool. Keep up the good work. Subscribed!!
Thank you, sir! Appreciate the nice note. Been a bit since this last video but finally getting to work on some more videos. :)

Really nice bowl.
That's a nice looking bowl/tray
Thank you!

You used double sided carpet tape but no glue to bond walnut to maple ??
Looks great man! Awesome job!
Thanks, dude! Having fun and makin' a huge mess. Can't complain! Still got a lot of practicing to do that's for sure.
Hi my friend on the side shot when your carving it looks like it's snowing ha ha ha good job bro i love it my friend :)
Hah! It looked like it was snowing a bit in person too 😂. Thanks for checking it out!
I always check your videos my friend,It's good stuff bro i like it sir :)

Lovely job man, you could scale this up and make a boat ;)
That was professional. ProFessional.
Hah! Thanks!
Now that’s curly... nice
Are you still wood working sir? I really enjoyed your video
Turned out great 👍🏻
Thanks man. Still getting the hand of the power carving thing. Looking forward to another one of your cool videos!
Merci pour cette vidéo très intéressante et magnifique travail.

Well I'm definitely inspired so now I have to make that same executable LOL
Mad skills there👍
Beautiful bowl! :-)
Thank you!
Good choice of wood
Thank you! I was definitely a fan of the outcome.
really nice. looks like fun..
Dan @ The Robbins Workshop Thanks, Dan! It definitely is a lot of fun. And it results in a pretty neat peace to boot!
Cool project! I really like it. It would be better to leave out the music so that we can hear you speaking. Thank you for sharing!
to Carter W...; what is corner sander that you use? it's very good to take by a hand !

How thick is the wood for the bowl
I don’t remember precisely but somewhere around 2-1/2” or 2-3/4”.

Can't hear you over the music
Fantástico.
Thank you!
check out kirjes sanding system for finishing your work for bowls and hard to reach spots king arthur tools do the same tool in the USA 4 years in and it saved my months of work and made be $$$$$ due to the finish it gives.
Beautiful but just lower the music
Beautyfuul
Stopped at 0:15 secs. Music and voice don't mix. DIY videos should not have music. My ears don't operate on stereo channels. Fail.
HA HA HA funny carving for kids
Like your videos but that music is very distracting and quite annoying.
А что за тёмное дерево?
You dont show how to get two colors ,? Glue ?
Yes - the maple and the walnut were run over a jointer to make them flat, and then they were glued together before the carving was done.
Looks great.
Beautiful
