Another fantastic stream🔥🔥 I might just pick up this pow kiddy👌🏾
It's bizarre that some TH-camrs, including here, are confused as to what this device is about. It's rather obviously primarily intended for emulating systems that display at the same or similar aspect ratio. So that'll be the likes of GB, GBC, NGP, NGPC, PCE/TG16, SNES and vertical screen arcade coin-ops, etc.
Exactly, to me it’s the literal opposite of a niche machine. It plays MORE than most in their correct aspect ratios because of the square screen. I love switching back and forth from vertical arcade to NES or GB.
@@DisgruntledPigumon Precisely. I've had my yellow RGB30 for a couple of weeks and are suitably impressed. It's wonderful to me as a fan of early-to-mid-1980s arcade coin-ops of which many were vertical oriented. It's surprisingly good for PS1 too due to its high resolution (for its price) screen and it having enough power to run those games at 2x internal rendering resolution.
It's interesting that it's called a niche device when it plays more consoles and arcades in the correct aspect ratios without spinning the device on its side. And for me, I wanted to get into Pico 8 so this seems amazing for that. It's not so much a niche product as one that does everything I needed it to do. And if I wanted to play something with a 16 by 9 aspect ratio, chances are it's a newer console. I'll buy a more powerful device that plays those better anyway.
@@troywassenaar7121 Indeed. For 4:3 games the area of the screen being used is near identical to the size of my Miyoo Mini Plus's entire screen so that's a welcome bonus to me.
Heck, I'm even playing Vectrex on it which of course isn't ideal due to the aspect ratio but due to its small screen being 720x720 the pixels are tightly packed. So the Vectrex's unique graphics look razor sharp and really pop. Glorious!
Always enjoy your videos . Might pick this one up in white, panda version.
We NEED that R35S content!
Sweet! 🙂
If this had touchscreen it'd be perfect for the weird DS games.
Great review! It was helpful to hear all your perspectives. I'm looking for my first retro handheld and was almost sold on the Retroid 2s until I saw the RGB 30. It was interesting you also talked about the 2s in your video. Looking to play Sega/SNES and down to Atari and some arcade games. Which would you recommend? Thanks for your help!
For those 4:3 systems I'd say RP2S if you don't mind setting it up, otherwise the RGB30 is ready to play. For your use case id actually recommend spending less money and getting the Anbernic RG35XX or Miyoo Mini Plus, both of them are the most user friendly and smooth experiences with some great firmware options. The 2S and RGB30 may be overkill (but it is nice to have the option of WiFi / retro achievements). Thanks for watching!
@@retrohandhelds Thanks so much for the reply and for the recommendations. I will look into those handhelds!
@@DougPancoast absolutely, Doug!
@@retrohandheldsDo your hands get cramp on the Miyoo? The layout on the Rgb30 looks more comfortable.
I like the screen ratio, perfect for gb/gbc, pce, ... it could be on my wish list of handhelds to get in the following months.
I have other handhelds such as rg35xx, rg351v, rg351m, rg300, miyoo mini, v90, ldk, ps4000 (good screen and very nice with batocera), piboy dmg, Odin Lite.. I lost count of them severals months ago :)
But I still haven't found the ultimate handheld : one allowing me to play all systems up to n64/dc/psp (and maybe ps2), running an os such as arkos/jelos, with an hdmi output and very good battery life. All suggestions are welcome :)
Wait for the upcoming RK3588 devices...
While is square screen is pretty awesome, I wish they made the resolution 768x768, which would've made for perfect integer scaling for many of its intended target retro consoles as well as the Pico-8.
I just purchased the new Purple Edition PowKiddy RGB30 a few days ago! It's supposed to ship out today.
I saw a Naomi logo! So my question is will the RGB30 play naomi games properly?
Rgb30 is amazing
It has two speakers and yet the sound outputs in mono?
I can't see the difference in performance. Tried both Arkos and Jelos. Both are Harder to shut down pain to boot to android and the f key don't work. I don't understand the benefits ! What am I missing?
For anyone coming here now for information on one os v the other. Both were close performance wise a while back. But updates for powkiddy devices are currently paused for jelos.
It will notify you of updates to the os overall. But if you run update nothing actually happens.
At the moment I'd go for arkos which is currently pulling away in terms of features and performance
So which os is better? I think Jelos since I will play retro stuff and play pico 8 which is good on this device and even when only have 1x1 content the screen is tall to where you can actually hace 4x3 gameplay on the go.
ArkOS now has Pico-8 too
I'm just here for the intro.
Is the Powkiddy RGB30 more powerful than a Miiyo Mini Plus? How do i know which PS1/N64 may run on the RGB 30?
the chip for rgb30 quite a bit more powerful than mm+. i'd search for ps1/n64 rgb30 test videos on youtube theres gotta be some out there
If anyone has the black screen after updating OS this could help: I read this and sure enough, my backlight is off: "Idk if you’re still having this issue, but I updated mine today, was having a black screen before I randomly realized the backlight wasn’t on. After shining my phone torch at the screen I was able to navigate to brightness and it turned the backlight back on." Just get to Brightness setting and turn it up (right on dpad) it worked.
this should be pinned somewhere. discovered the same thing yesterday after looking at the screen from an angle and seeing some text. backlight turning off has people making unnecessary returns for their device.
does this happen with both firmware's? which firmware did the black screen happen?
You can use select + vol keys to change brightness, in arkos its right joystick (click it down) + dpad up and down
Can either of these do auto save at shut down and load after restart? Basically the way Onion OS does.
JELos has the option to autosave on shutdown when you boot a game you can do regular or that option
Even as a Pico 8 player, worth every penny.
Any thoughts about RGB30 vs the upcoming RG35XX H?
Software (for now) and performance goes to the rgb30, everything else to the H
The h700 chip that the rg35xx H is based around is a little stronger than the rk3326, but still a good bit weaker than the rk3566 that the rgb30 runs on.
Also I've taken mine apart there are 2 speakers in my unit
In the video thumbnail it shows what looks like mixolumia on the screen can it really play that game? If so I am sold on buying one for that game and the vertical shmups…
It can play pico8 natively
Thanks I didn't know it had a pico8 version of this I thought maybes it would play the linux or a Linux Port version of the game@@retrohandhelds
....Best Deal As Far As SD Card Size Of 256gb Was Black Model I'm Loving My Lil RGB30 ....
I'm looking for a retro console under 80usd which could run ps1 and psp games , pls suggest some options.....
Under 80 you're a little limited on PSP but should be able to get full PS1 with something like 35xx or miyoo Mini+, if you really need some PSP you might be able to find the Powkiddy x55 at around that price and that will run a majority of PSP games.
@@retrohandhelds Thanks 😊
You can find PSPs for under 80 sometimes.
Hi I have noticed that some games do not have sound, others have 100% volume and you can't turn it down after pressing the volume buttons. Is there a way to fix that? - JELOS RGB30. Thanks
I had this happen twice with mine. A system reset helped at first, but then it came back. -Zu
@@retrohandhelds Hi, I noticed that some of the platforms have no sound, whereas the others which do have MAX volume which cant' be changed other than system audio turn off (the overriding settings). If anyone comes with any ideas how to fix it it will be much appreciated. Thanks
managed to fix it by luck I was just experimenting with options - change the overriding settings for audio to sd12 and happy days
Thanks. I noticed the D-pad doesn't like double presses in quick succession (in Tenchu on PSX you double press in any direction to rush side-steps) 😢
How is the boot time for JELOS?
It's pretty good in the newest releases
That form factor is.... weird? I gotta have it now. 😭
I assume it was made this way for DS& 3DS emulation.
@@Captain_Chaz86 All I needed was a good enough reason and you gave me it. SOLD! 🤣
its a good one, a weird good one!
I don’t feel that Jelos is so easy. It’s easily brickable. It’s doesn’t recognize my USB or Bluetooth controllers. And when I map the buttons, they don’t copy over to all the other emus. So the main thing that’s touted about Jelos just doesn’t really happen.
I’m going to try out Arkos.
ArkOS we generally recommend over Jelos when possible, you hit the nail on rhe head.
lol I can't think of a worse game to play stretched than classic square-based puzzle game, Lumines II.
Arcos hides the tracks your ps1 roms have while jelos show everything which could mess up your ps1 folder unless your roms don’t have tracks.
Use .chd's. BIN/CUE's are a thing of the past.
as reviewer said at 26:15 or so, the dpad has TONS of false diagonals. this device is not usable for many games which require dpad.
arkos is not so stable while running retroarch when loading roms and jelos is slow on boot ....
MinUI is out now in early Alpha! Might give that a shot.
Nice, can't wait that. And all i need is a fast boot and stable retroarch@@retrohandhelds
2min n lets talk colors......
Have fun girls.
Stretched...ugh - can't watch this any more.
10min still compare devices......
I doubt that it has a battery life of 8 hours. With 720x720 the battery life can't be more than 4 hours. Prove me wrong.
the battery indicator is not accurate at all on the rgb30
We'll have to test that in the in-depth review, 8 hours is what the company claims.
pretty sure these companies go by dimmest light setting/lowest power consumption because the hours they always list appear exaggerated
@@retrohandheldsThe difficulty to charge the RGB30 battery is quite a big problem to address. I wish I knew that before buying one. At least with JelOS newest update, which I regret I did.
