As a Singaporean, i still remember the BO3 controversy. Our country was on highest alert due to increasing terrorism worldwide and Singapore was one of those targets. I remember the terrorist was targeting Marina Bay or MBS from Batam, Indonesia around that time.
So yeah bad timing Activision.
Seems like yesterday.
Yeah extremely bad timing and insensitive of Activision especially since Malaysia had some terror attacks at that time

THQ's balloon stunt actually cost a life, when a sailor shipwrecked on a nearby waterbody and they couldn't sent out an SAR-helicopter because of the balloons.
The sailor died.
So not only it was bad for the enviroment, but it also cost a life?

It maybe could have worked, but the way they did it - it was bound to fail.
What got me about the Xbox One reveal was the Xbox powers-that-be's reaction to all the negativity with all their rules and restrictions was pretty much, "What, people aren't OK with this?" 🙄
Then Sony came along and dropped the ball on them, nearly causing another casualty under the Sony/PlayStation name, lol
My favorite was Don saying if you can't always be online we have a product for you called the 360. Then the submarine comparison. All with a straight face. Talk about being out of touch with your consumers. Glad his ass got the boot.
I actually did a media analysis presentation in my final year of college about the PS Vita advertisement.
I got full marks and took little effort because there was just SO MUCH to talk about! 😂😂😂
I remember reading about it years ago and just thought what the fuck were they thinking. Bare in mind multiple people had to sign off on this and what nobody thought at the time "you know, maybe this isn't a good idea." just staggering when you think about it.
Not a true Marketing fail (not at the level of the one in the list) but the reveal of Diablo: Immortal at the Blizzcon should had deserved a mention.

Not really. Blizzard made a game for mobile and some fat neckbeard basement dweller got made they didn’t made one for PC when its clear that those have separate teams.

Blizzard received the most lukewarm crowd reaction ever seen, a guy in the audience reacted with a dead serius "are you fucking joking?" and the crowd cheered to that.
So, it is clear that Blizzard missed the mark
This is not what people wanted, or at least what that audience wanted, and I didn't saw that many fat neckbeard there
Blizzard can develop the fuck they want, but it's the public that decides what he wants to play.
Diablo Immortal was clearly a desperate way to market themselves in China/East Asia, where Mobile gaming is a true thing, but they presented it to the wrong audience, therefore it is a marketing fail. Period.
@@NekoHibaCosplay fat neckbeard is not meant to be taken seriously. They may not have been a 100% not the right audience but you know these people also acted childish. It's not rocket science that those are 2 different teams yet they acted like little bitches because they did not get what they want. The presentation was great, the game looked great. However I agree that Blizzard should have known that their fanbase is a shithole of angry nerds that stomps around when the world does not revolve around them. Also, if I remember right it's Blizzcon. They can announce whatever they wanted.
The resident evil one seemed really cool.
Like a haunted house and the money went to charity. That's a bummer people ruined it
Think the issue is that they used an actual shop and dressed it up with the grotesque imagery, rather than doing something like a pop-up in an empty storefront.
@@AuraHero but like, it was clearly a staged thing. There were "hanging bodies". Halloween shops use established store fronts all the time. People were being silly here
@@leol2926 Nah, it was a stupid idea. Were is the relation between games and butchers? How many teenagers go out and buy meat from a butcher? Their parents buy their food.
Its that kind of idea that sounds cool in your head but should have been shut down at the presentation.
@@silentsaturn7604 I'm assuming it was a popular place in a Market and not some random unknown butchershop. And I would buy meat once in university. More than teens buy games. It's a neat idea. And the charity aspect would get it more media conversation if people were not lame
I would say the Sega Saturn marketing should’ve been on this list, it’s way worse than the Xbone reveal! Because lot of stores like Walmart and KB Toys refused to stock the Saturn, because Sega betrayed the retailers and it backfired on Sega in the long run!
Japan was lucky with the Saturn as it sold better there than in the USA
@@ChaseMC215 because they had better marketing, especially Segata Sanshiro as their mascot. Sega of America got screwed and didn’t have enough American publishers nor developers that made games for it!

still disappointed how sony dropped the ball...especially with those vita memory cards. paying 100+ for 32GB...WHY? and 64 was even more.

PSP and PS Vita are a good idea, but Sony dropped the ball on things like this, wish we got a 3rd gen handheld device from Sony of the Ps4 and the Ps5 generations, especially for the VR stuff as well, so yeah

I never thought about negative ads but I’m pretty sure if a random dude went out on stage and said “Hey guys, the ps6 is going to be like the ps5 but you know, a little better. It’s a little faster, holds more data’s, games are a little more detailed, and it has a faster processor”, would probably be a great ad for many gamers these days.
I actually remember that White PSP commercial. I was in Winnipeg, Manitoba and I was so hype for it once I heard about it. Then I seen that commercial while visiting a friend. I instantly seen the racial insensitivity in the commercial, and it killed my hype. But my friend I was visiting that day, didnt see any problem whatsoever. Neither did his parents when I tried explaining why we were arguing. I was no longer friends with him after that day lol.
So instead of trying to help them understand, you just gave up on being friends anymore? That seems productive.
And pretty much on point with how people are today.
@@Muhammadwasapedo yup. After arguing with one of my friends and his entire family for the entire day, on how the commercial was racially insensitive and possessed implied racial dominance and how that was potentially a dangerous mindset to be associated with such a popular company.
Then also continuing to try to convince him from then on during our school years, because I ONLY TURNED 13 MIND YOU, from grade 7 to grade 8, that being racially insensitive is bad for people in general, especially in the city we were in. Given that I am native american, he was vietnamese and we were at a multicultural school where the minority was actually white people and the majority consisted of Asian, black and native american children.
Yeah, I might have given up later on to try to show my friend the imbalance between racial equality. But i was barely a teenager, so who in the fuck are you to judge me about that?
I dont have to explain myself to you, but being a native american in *Canada* is hard to face, as I could get thrown in jail while I'm walking down the street to get my son's cereal because a racist cop thinks that all native Americans are just drunks.
So do me a favor... get the fuck off of your high horse, and going forward, try not to instantaneously imply the worse scenario just because the people you surround yourself with are assholes.

What about the Nintendo’s E3 2008 presentation? That was a disaster.
I actually liked the idea of Xbox One being a multimedia device, although they should have said "A Games Device and a Multimedia Device" instead.
I feel like with some of this stuff, your just going to have to let some people be mad. Soon these companies aren't going to do anything to please everyone. Then people are going to complain about that. "Remember when game companies use to do big promotions?" that's why everyone will say.

I actually think the butcher shop "human" body parts thing is funny. At least they said up front that it was meat designed to look like human parts, instead of trying to convince people it was real. Hell, you can buy fake body parts for Halloween, so why is this so bad? I would've tried the different meats.

Efootball 2022 had the worst Marketing Fail in my opinion (the fact that they didn't even try Makes it even worse) 🤷🏻. They killed of the PES Franchise and the game is the worst rated game in the History of Steam & other stores. The fansbase is Truly Shocked .

The Wii U was a new console, because you could use Amiibo’s in Super Smash Bros, and Animal Crossing games

I wanted a Wii U back in the days, but I ended up getting a Dreamcast, PS4 with PSVITA... and then Nintendo Switch.

The marketing fail in that instance was that the game took 3 years to get done, and by the time it was released, it was so bad that John Romero had to eat his words.

if you fed into those pro rumors, i could see why you'd be disappointed, but Nintendo never advertised it as nothing other than a better screen.
@@thecunninlynguist they didnt even do that at first. The juat said "new switch" or "upgraded console" it felt misleading to call it "new" or "upgraded" when barely any changes were made especially those who play on TVs.
And considering fans have been asking for months/years for better game play and to fix the damn drifr. Them not doing any of what ppl asked for was a face slap

Even his demeanor in the commercial could be seen miles away as deceptive and insulting to consumers. They go on the premise that we are a bunch of dumb people who fall for everything they plan in their confidence rooms. These types of commercials have become even ridiculous.

Okay, but who can remember the success of Battlefield 3 and then came the trailer for Hardline. You may have missed the gameplay footage back then but it was certainly laughable soldiers sinking into the ground and being able to walk through vehicles. XD Part 3 itself looked very nice so the contrast was huge.

@@ChaseMC215 Actually yes. Personally, I think many of those games are too similar. It's a bit like action movies, it has to get more and more extreme and the story and gameplay suffer. many people then stop touching the story and only play the online modes.

Meh, I liked the Your Mom Hates Desd Space gimmick. It was kinda stupid but harmless and just had a fun showcase of the game....especially compared to the rest of the shit shown on this list
