  • This 1 litre ecoflex engine fitted to a 2010 vauxhall corse was not the original engine in the vehicle. it was a replacement engine but it came with worn out swirl flaps in the inlet manifold which sounded as if the engine was rattling..

    Well done Alan, Like you said it sounds like the engine is shot.
    I wonder how many owners have been told that they need a new engine by unscrupulous garages.
    Only for them to fit or bodge the swirl flaps.
    Keep up the good work, I now know that if I hear someone mention that their ecoflex engine is shot, I can tell them about the swirl flaps and the quick way to tell if it is them at fault by removing the vacuum pipe.

    Swirl flaps are normally for duel length manifolds. Long inlet runners are good for torque, but not so much for rpm. So the ecu adjusts the flaps to create long and short lengths to suit rpm, load.

    • @alphaomega5721
      @alphaomega5721 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah that's correct. The dual length runners in the inlet manifold enhance torque. Incidentally Mitsubishi had this in their 3.5l V6 petrol and the butterfly valves were brass with brass screws. Over time they come loose and you end up with brass screws going into the cylinders. Brass is incompressible.....
      For ensuring no wallet shocks, we removed the valves....
      Other problem with the Vauxhall as shown in the video is that it'll draw in false air through the worn shafts/holes and make the car run lean, maybe even sending some horrible O2 codes and getting on a wild goose chase.
      If it was my car I'd disconnect the mechanical link, seal up the manifold holes and be done.

    Hi Alan, I can not see what you have done exactly but when holding the screw, it appeared you were wanting to blank it off on the wrong side. Do blank it off on the engine vacuum suction side however. Otherwise you have now created a vacuum leak , which will arise when the solenoid is allowed by the ECU to let the vacuum pass through 😁Mixture problems will arise. Hope you did it all right. The safest way would be: Reattach the vacuum hose to the solenoid. Detach the hose from the vacuum actuator. Then blank off the vacuum hose. Leave the vacuum actuator unharmed, since apparently the flaps are in the correct position when the actuator is non vacuumized. Regards from NL

      Did this ever cause a side effect or knock-on problem? (Pardon the pun with the term "knock-on"! 😂)
      And - am I correct in my understanding that you only disconnected the power fron the little vacuum actuator and remove the hose but leave it open ?
      Sorry if I'm misunderstanding.

      @@denisbiggane6981 denis, there is a solenoid and a vacuum actuator. The solenoid is the thing with the electrical wire connected to it. Leave the electrical wire on the solenoid and do not detach it. The vacuum actuator does not have an electrical wire. It only has a vacuum hose coming from the solenoid. In order to put the vacuum actuator out of service, you should detach the vacuum hose from the actuator. But you should blank it off as described above. I do not know any side effects when doing this, you should ask Alan about that. Hope this helps.

      They call it 'twinport'. The car closes the flaps over on half of the inlet ports, to allow it to use more EGR

    Hi Alan, thanks for sharing but at the start of the video u mentioned how important swirl flaps are in terms of better combustion and fuel economy, so assuming now the default to the open position permanatly, how has this effected the car fuel economy taking into account what u said at the start?
    Thank you again and a good find.
    Kind regards JAY

      hi, yes much higher chance of increased fuel consumption but alternative is to replace the inlet manifold

      the oil filter element in those corsas get blocked and sucked in causing oil starvation..might be worth checking that too

    When you disconnect the vacuum pipe do the flaps spring to the open position? Sounds like they do if you have full power. 🤔

    Hi Alan,
    Great video and thoroughly explained.I had the exact same issue with the rattle about 7-8 months ago with my Corsa D 2010 1.0 Ecotec and diagnosed it as the timing chain. The mechanic who fitted the new chain said that It was slack and needed replaced. However, the rattle is back and I was thinking the worst but after watching your video and taking a look at the manifold, I pulled the lever that controls the swirl flaps and the sound of the rattle disappeared. I don’t know how to go about this because it’s an expensive repair to replace the inlet manifold, could the car still be roadworthy or am I taking a risk by continuing to drive it ??
    Cheers
    Sean

      I recently had the same problem with mine, garage were great and recommended going down the second hand route for the part! Don’t carry on driving the car as if the loose part goes into the engine, the whole engine will be a write off!! We very luckily got a part second hand for £50 on Facebook!

      @Hannah Szubert Hi Hannah,
      That's great you managed to get it sorted and fixed. My problem is that the mechanics I've spoken to about the rattle and the lever at the back of the engine, next to the manifold, they don't want to really listen and put it down to a timing chain etc but managed to find a Vauxhall Specialist garage close to home. I'm hoping they identify the rattle and that it is coming from the manifold and get it sorted sooner rather than later. I've been driving the car as normal but I do know the risk of the swirl flap finally giving way and falling into one of the cylinders of the engine but I have no choice as I'm going round in circles with garages trying to find what I know to be the problem.

      Ahhhh sorry to hear that, I know it’s a pain. Try going to a Vaux Centre, we did also buy a manifold off them for 420 but it was brand new and they quoted 75 to put it in, it also came with 12 months warranty. Really good customer service. I’m not sure where your based, however there are a few Vauxcentres around, I would definitely recommend that route. the one in Romford was brilliant, really lovely people. Hope that helps! 🙈

      @Hannah Szubert Yeah got the car booked into a VX specialist for Wednesday morning to see if they can diagnose the manifold but I'm hoping they can before I need to take it across the country to get it sorted haha. That was a really good price. Did you get a new manifold or just the swirl flaps ??

    • @hannahszubert1479
      @hannahszubert1479 ปีที่แล้ว

      Whole new thing!! Brand new, I was shocked at how good the price was 🙈 we had it diagnosed at my local garage where I had it serviced (Langley Vale garage) and then they recommended going second hand as Wilson’s Vauxhall had quoted 600 for a whole new manifold (without labour!!) and after labour costs and vat my garage said getting a new part wouldn’t be worth it on my old little Corsa! It’s good to know as vauxcenter Romford will also post 48 hour’s delivery so if you get quoted a silly price for a manifold at your Vauxhall you can buy it for them to put in and just pay them for the labour 🤷🏼‍♀️! Worth a thought, that’s what we had to do in the end as unfortunately the second hand part wasn’t the right fit!

    Hi Alan, my corsa sounds exactly like that and the garage have told me that the engine is on its way out - the only difference is that mine occasionally misfires and then sorts itself out again. Could the manifold cause it to misfire randomly? Thanks

    I have just watched the video and with exactly the same problem eliminated this noise in minutes! Garage quoted min of £300 to investigate and likely would have tried to replace the whole inlet manifold on a car worth £1200...... I decided to just pull off the ball fixing on the actuator arm where it meets the swirl flaps when the engine is running. Not sure why you can't just do this and not touch the hoses? Thereby the no vacuum leaks and the engine thinks all is good>?

    • @wmsstuff271
      @wmsstuff271 ปีที่แล้ว

      How do you do that Nick? Pulling the ball fixing off. Does it just detatch easily? I want to do it but I'm always breaking shit. I dont want to snap it by forcing it off too much. It looks like flimsy plastic to me.

    Hi. I would like to ask a question. I have opel corsa d 1.2 66K km . When car is car 4th gear between 1700 -2000 rpm snd shift to 5th gear a knocking out sound comes from engine. 3rd to 4th is same. But when i use agressivley mean that higher rpm no knocking out sounds comes. Is this how corsa engine works or same thing wrong hsppen in engine
    . I changed coil and sparkle

    • @bar1721
      @bar1721 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are driving well below RPM range which should be used. For most gasoline engines you should almost always stay above 2000 rpm. The only reason to use 1000-2000 RPM range is for starting on first gear and going without much load in 2nd and sometimes 3rd gear. Driving like that will destroy your engine in a short time.
