To be specific and since you seem curious, family names that are pronounced the same can be differentiated by their family origin. For example, the most popular family name Kim (김) is actually a set of Kims from different originins such as the Kims from Gimhae (김해 김) and the Kims from Gyeongju (경주 김), which are treated as different family names. Nowdays you can marry anyone who is not closely related, even if they have the same family origin. However, at the time when Il Nam got married, you were not allowed to marry a person from the same family name + origin. Since the Oh (오) family name is dominated by a single family origin (i.e., 해주 오), it is likely that Il Nam and Mal Soon have the same family origin. honestly a show i would love to see Mat cover is Alice in Borderland it’s a Japanese show on Netflix but it would be cool to hear his theory’s on it, it’s a similar show like Squid Game where it’s all a big game but with cards and it’s so well done it’s probably my favorite show at the moment
I personally liked Ali e in Borderland more than squid game. It has more focus on the games in alice in Borderland and I like that a lot. In squid game, usually about half the episodes are about the game and the other half is character development. I also personally thought the games in alice in Borderland was better, more unique and had more tension. However I do still like both shows.
It would make alot more sense if Il-nam is Gi-hun's uncle instead of father. The Oh surname would match up with Gi-hun's mother and the similar housing districts would make more sense, due to them likely living near each other with the shared alleyway, but not in the same house.

It’s important to remember that the creator wrote this 12 years ago as a movie and had almost no ideas for a sequel so it’s incredibly unlikely that he intentionally tried to foreshadow a future season
When you write a good story you’re supposed to know every detail about your character (forgot exactly which author said that) so they could piggy back off those details to make a sequel. That doesn’t mean the sequel will be good though😅

@Nimiji Antics that’s not necessarily all true because while I do agree with you that you always leave room for sequels but not every writer goes into it with those intentions. A lot of writers do their projects specifically written to be a one season type of project, not to mention they’re such things as open endings and Korean shows and movies are well known for having a lot of open endings to their properties. Director Hwang is a well known film director so he’s used to only doing one off projects. Side note: Korean shows are mostly known for having one season to them with the exception of a handful of them out there that have multiple which is rare to see overall in the Korean tv industry. Unlike in the US where it’s a norm to see a multiple season series because their created that way from the beginning and the viewers in the states have the luxury of being spoiled with their favorite shows for many years, the same cannot be said about Korean shows and the western audiences need to be able to understand this and respect the way Korea does things, and not impose like I see in the comment section in various videos.

I was about to say this as well. In Korea, women keep their maiden last name. So Il-Nam and Mal-Soon being married due to surname being same is too far fetched. However, Koreans can marry someone with same similar surname, as we have a lot of Kim's Park's Kang's and Lee's. But the surnames are Chinese characters meaning different things. So if the surname comes from the same character, then that's a problem. So if ever Il-nam is related, the most plausible case is that Il-name is either his grandfather, or his uncle.

I think there is an addition that they have to also be from the same paternal line and same ancestor area. Theres an insane amount of Kims, Lees and Parks in Korea and they are definitely not all related, over 10 000 000 people with the surname Kim. However the rule with same last name+paternal line+ancestry geo location was a lot stricter than most western societies where religion kinda thought it was ok as long as it was 3-5 generations apart. I might be wrong but from what I understand this stems from the fact that before when most people didnt have surnames, only the important families/clans, the rest of the people were mostly sorted by where they were from. So when they decided to sort things out and everyone was picking their surname a lot of people just picked the surnames of existing important families, ending up with huge amount of people having the same surnames.

As many others have said before, I also think that Oh Il-Nam and Seong Gi-Hun are related, not as father and son, but as uncle and nephew. In Korean culture, when you marry, it is not common for the wife to take the husband's last name. But the child/children do take the father's last name. Although Gi-Hun's mom's last name is Oh, like Oh Il-Nam's, Gi-Hun's last name is Seong, indicating that his father's last name is also Seong.

I have a completely different theory about a different film. I'm 1000% positive that Dumbledore thought that the Golden trio was going to be the golden 4. In book 1 the trials that they go through to get to the stone are rather specific to the charector that completed it. But the devils snare, was there for Neville. Dumbledore knew Neville would try to stop them, and he thought they would invite him to join their group. But instead, Hermione ruined that. Neville was after all the other side of the coin when it came to the proficy. He was supposed to be Harry's right hand. Another powerful wizard that just needed a little motivation from friends to push him to new height. He was supposed to be there every step of the way.

Personally before ever hearing any theories on this, I thought 001 was 456’s grandfather. Most likely his father’s father. 456’s father isn’t around, maybe he’s dead, and 001 didn’t have anyone else to pass on the legacy and money to, so he took a gamble on his grandson to come out victorious. Another reason he would call him to his deathbed at the end, he wanted family there, and 456 is his only living family. 456 may never have met his paternal grandfather, thus he wouldn’t recognize him, but maybe 001 had kept tabs on his grandson from afar. The little similarities that seemed to link them but aren’t strong enough to make them father and son, could however link them through the missing father.
Il-nam is old, but I don’t think he’s that old. If he is his father, he probably just wasn’t present in his life, so Gi-hun didn’t recognize him. There’s also the fact that Koreans get their surname from their father, so unless they gave Gi-hun a fake surname, his father and grandfather have the surname Seong.
I think that the show was mainly implying how similar their lives could’ve been or were because of how easily one can go the wrong way. Showing how the big bad wasn’t some pure evil and that he is and was human in every meaning of the word and the hero and villain aren’t so different.
The problem is when you look at genetics for a live action show to show similarities in characters, you are comparing genetics of the person in real life rather than their TV show counterpart. Therefore, making it unlikely that the directors chose those actors because they have similar features, although this can be argued for in a cartoon

I think it’s more likely that the salesman is Il Nam’s son. It would be too convenient for Gi Hun to be Il Nam’s son. Plus Gi Hun rejects Il Nam’s ideology while the salesman seems cool with sending people to their deaths. It would make more sense to me that the salesman becomes the new Front Man or host and Gi Hun defeats him and disbands the games, dismantling Il Nam’s legacy as one final f you.

I personally liked Ali e in Borderland more than squid game. It has more focus on the games in alice in Borderland and I like that a lot. In squid game, usually about half the episodes are about the game and the other half is character development. I also personally thought the games in alice in Borderland was better, more unique and had more tension. However I do still like both shows.

It would make alot more sense if Il-nam is Gi-hun's uncle instead of father. The Oh surname would match up with Gi-hun's mother and the similar housing districts would make more sense, due to them likely living near each other with the shared alleyway, but not in the same house.

It’s important to remember that the creator wrote this 12 years ago as a movie and had almost no ideas for a sequel so it’s incredibly unlikely that he intentionally tried to foreshadow a future season
When you write a good story you’re supposed to know every detail about your character (forgot exactly which author said that) so they could piggy back off those details to make a sequel. That doesn’t mean the sequel will be good though😅

@Nimiji Antics that’s not necessarily all true because while I do agree with you that you always leave room for sequels but not every writer goes into it with those intentions. A lot of writers do their projects specifically written to be a one season type of project, not to mention they’re such things as open endings and Korean shows and movies are well known for having a lot of open endings to their properties. Director Hwang is a well known film director so he’s used to only doing one off projects.
Side note: Korean shows are mostly known for having one season to them with the exception of a handful of them out there that have multiple which is rare to see overall in the Korean tv industry. Unlike in the US where it’s a norm to see a multiple season series because their created that way from the beginning and the viewers in the states have the luxury of being spoiled with their favorite shows for many years, the same cannot be said about Korean shows and the western audiences need to be able to understand this and respect the way Korea does things, and not impose like I see in the comment section in various videos.
The story can be tweaked by Netflix to accommodate a sequel.

I think there is an addition that they have to also be from the same paternal line and same ancestor area. Theres an insane amount of Kims, Lees and Parks in Korea and they are definitely not all related, over 10 000 000 people with the surname Kim. However the rule with same last name+paternal line+ancestry geo location was a lot stricter than most western societies where religion kinda thought it was ok as long as it was 3-5 generations apart.
I might be wrong but from what I understand this stems from the fact that before when most people didnt have surnames, only the important families/clans, the rest of the people were mostly sorted by where they were from. So when they decided to sort things out and everyone was picking their surname a lot of people just picked the surnames of existing important families, ending up with huge amount of people having the same surnames.

In Korean culture, when you marry, it is not common for the wife to take the husband's last name. But the child/children do take the father's last name. Although Gi-Hun's mom's last name is Oh, like Oh Il-Nam's, Gi-Hun's last name is Seong, indicating that his father's last name is also Seong.

I'm sure the hints were intentional - whether that means they will actually pull a big twist reveal in S2, or just leave it as interesting connections is something else entirely, but I find it very hard to believe that Gi-Huns mother and his father figure sharing a family name and being named "first boy" and "last girl" was a complete coincidence that nobody working on the show noticed.

I have a completely different theory about a different film. I'm 1000% positive that Dumbledore thought that the Golden trio was going to be the golden 4. In book 1 the trials that they go through to get to the stone are rather specific to the charector that completed it. But the devils snare, was there for Neville. Dumbledore knew Neville would try to stop them, and he thought they would invite him to join their group. But instead, Hermione ruined that. Neville was after all the other side of the coin when it came to the proficy. He was supposed to be Harry's right hand. Another powerful wizard that just needed a little motivation from friends to push him to new height. He was supposed to be there every step of the way.

Personally before ever hearing any theories on this, I thought 001 was 456’s grandfather. Most likely his father’s father. 456’s father isn’t around, maybe he’s dead, and 001 didn’t have anyone else to pass on the legacy and money to, so he took a gamble on his grandson to come out victorious. Another reason he would call him to his deathbed at the end, he wanted family there, and 456 is his only living family. 456 may never have met his paternal grandfather, thus he wouldn’t recognize him, but maybe 001 had kept tabs on his grandson from afar. The little similarities that seemed to link them but aren’t strong enough to make them father and son, could however link them through the missing father.
Il-nam is old, but I don’t think he’s that old. If he is his father, he probably just wasn’t present in his life, so Gi-hun didn’t recognize him.
There’s also the fact that Koreans get their surname from their father, so unless they gave Gi-hun a fake surname, his father and grandfather have the surname Seong.

I think that the show was mainly implying how similar their lives could’ve been or were because of how easily one can go the wrong way. Showing how the big bad wasn’t some pure evil and that he is and was human in every meaning of the word and the hero and villain aren’t so different.
The problem is when you look at genetics for a live action show to show similarities in characters, you are comparing genetics of the person in real life rather than their TV show counterpart. Therefore, making it unlikely that the directors chose those actors because they have similar features, although this can be argued for in a cartoon
honestly, if you're directing something and decide that two or more characters are going to be genetically related, they BEST look similar.
The names il-nam and mal-soon being "first boy" and "last girl" may be referencing that il-nam is 001 and mal-soon was the last person to die in S1.
No mal-soon was not the last person to die in season 1 because after she died il-nam still died in the scene a year later.
He doesn’t get in the plane in order to protect his daughter. He had just had his family threatened so he chooses to stay as far from his family as possible. That IS good father material.

I’m Korean and from my experience women don’t change their last names to their husband’s. That’s a mostly western thing. Also MCs last name is Seong not Oh. On top of that while there are thousands of Western last names there are only like 15 korean ones.
I was going to comment this! Children get their last names from their fathers typically and even so there aren't nearly as many Korean last names as there are western names.

I think it’s more likely that the salesman is Il Nam’s son. It would be too convenient for Gi Hun to be Il Nam’s son. Plus Gi Hun rejects Il Nam’s ideology while the salesman seems cool with sending people to their deaths. It would make more sense to me that the salesman becomes the new Front Man or host and Gi Hun defeats him and disbands the games, dismantling Il Nam’s legacy as one final f you.

Since in South Korea the wife doesn’t get the family but the child does. So if Oh Il Nam and Oh Mal Soon are married Gi hun would get the Oh family married or not.
But in South Korea if you give birth and are not married you get the mother’s name but since Gi Hun’s family name is Seong it shows that Oh Mal Soon was married and probably a widow.
If Oh Il Nam was Gi Hun’s uncle…it wouldn’t be likely. If Oh Il Nam had a brother, the brother would get the Oh family name so Gi-Hun’s name would be Oh Gi-Hun. Since that’s not the case since his family name is Seong AND it’s confirmed because Gi-hun would have gotten the Oh family if the mother wasn’t married.
So Oh Il Nam and Seong Gi Hun are not related.

I absolutely love how MatPat misuses the term "lactose intolerant" several times in this video. It's a condition where someone isn't able to fully digest the lactose in milk. But MatPat uses it as if it means "a condition in which someone doesn't like plain milk".

It isn't misused. A lactose intolerant person isn't going to drink milk with lactose in it. Lactose intolerant people usually don't like milk because it is too difficult to digest.
