Watching two grown men put a sandwich inside a sandwich and then microwave it inside some sort of Frankenstein toaster gadget is all I wanted from my Thursday evening, really.
When I was a student, me and a couple of mates once spent an evening with a toastie maker, trying out different fillings. Successes included :- Sherbet Dip (VERY tasty caramelised lemony deliciousness); Lasagne (really good, very filling); Banana and Peanut Butter (Not bad, bit cloying on the tongue); Banoffee Pie (from Asda. The Tesco one wasn't as nice). Smarties (crunchy chocolate. What's not to love?) Not so successful :- Snickers (sickly sweet, okay if you're into type 2 diabetes); Tomato soup (no. Just, no); Skittles (molten lava, avoid); Starburst (see above). There were others, the usual stuff like beans and cheese, nutella etc.
@@mrbarrylewis From the viewers' perspective, at least, it always seems to be well worth it! Stuart's calm reactions to whatever hijinks you two get up two never fails to illicit a chuckle from me. I'd love to see what would happen if you tried putting unconventional ingredients into an oddball automated kitchen gadget like the ones you always seem to test (donut maker, pasta macine, etc). I'm sure Stuart would "love" the results. And by love, I mean he would likely cut all ties with you and move to some far off country with no internet. But it would be well worth it to see what would transpire :) Anyway, as always, love the videos. Cheers from the USA! -MC

Poor people in the Victorian era allegedly ate "toast sandwiches", a toasted piece of bread between two uncooked pieces of bread. That's what the Poundland sandwich sandiwch reminded me of!
Its actually pretty damn good. If you follow orinigal recipes, you salt and pepper the toast, slap bread round it, and dig in. Pure carbs, but tastes actually really good for what it is
Bought one of these after watching your gadget testing video. You're supposed to turn it over half way through cooking though so that could be why your toasting seems a bit uneven. Love it! 😀x

I bought one of these for me and my dad last Christmas and we use it every Sunday with a BLT we get from a supermarket, works an absolute charm. Thanks for bringing it to our attention Barry!

I bought one of those microwave toastie thingies, based on your old Pre production video Barry. It’s great but often I want 2, that’s the only advantage a normal Breville has over it. Couple of slices of Gouda, spoonful of beans, you can’t beat it.
Andy Sutcliffe it quite simple, make one and whilst consuming that one, have the other one in. I do that with Cheese on Toast, it’s always hot then too
I like the duality of these two, Barry would invite Ashen for a nice food episode while Ashen would invite Barry for a buffet of intercontinental expired treats.

I was literally looking at that toastie gadget on Amazon only just yesterday! If it can make Poundland sandwiches taste nice then I guess it's gotta be worth the money.
While I do enjoy Ashens' angry sense of humor when he eats something disgusting, I also really like it when he finds a food he likes. It might be because I want the guy who has genuinely entertained me a lot over the years to have nice things happen to him. The world I live in makes it feel like that's a strange concept.
I have the version without the cutters, they make great toasties. I also have the rectangle one for bacon and sausages. They are actually good products.
I still have this toastie maker and the baked potato / jacket potato maker I dont remember if the kickstarter took off but it should have they make great 10 minute potatoes

If you use thick cut bread and make a jam sandwich, you could then dip it in batter and then toast it and you could have a type of doughnut. Brown bread jam sandwiches in a sandwich toaster are amazing, if you sprinkle caster sugar on straight after it comes out.

ive got one of those microwave toastie makers , its the best thing ever invented , the old toasties come out soggy but this makes them crispy ,, the main reason its not coming out crispy on the one side is that you have to turn it over halfway through cooking , so rather than 5 minutes and leave it ,, after 2 and a half minutes flip it over and cook for another 2 and a half minutes
I have one of these micro sandwich toasters and I find if you turn them over halfway through the cooking time you get even colour on both sides. I will definitely try the curry approach but I must insist that you try corned beef, horseradish, diced shallots and emmental cheese. I make about a dozen at a time and freeze them uncooked. They are much easier to butter when frozen. Two-and-a-half minutes each side (900w) will defrost and cook them adequately and evenly. Amazing.
Dipping the sandwich quickly in batter is an alternative to buttering the bread and does make for a nice toastie. Works a charm for making ones with runny fillings and you're just using a frying pan for the toastie phase.
thoroughly enjoyed this. Most people probably came up with suggestions by late night raids of empty cupboards. Some combinations can be surprisingly nice!

in the bonus sandwich, i wonder if you could have put the sandwiches across the divider line, that way the cut ends would have sealed AND cut the halves into quarter sizes....
Ahh I used to have Tesco Kormas, could never finish them as a kid so spooned out the curry sauce and rise onto buttery toast in the morning for brunch 😂 would have loved to try the toastie action
we bought a couple of these after your reviews and our toastie consumption has gone through the roof. they work a treat. personal favourite, emmenthal, mozzarella, ham/salami, and red pesto.
As the instructions that come with the toastie; you have to flip it half way through. Then you get a crispy crunch on both sides and a perfect toastie. The best things come to the ones who're patient! - I purchased this amazing product after you recommended the crowdfunding campaign, Barry. We've had it for years, and we love it!
It's a myth (or rather, an understandable simplification) that you can't put metal in a microwave. The real rule is, don't put metal in a microwave unless it's metal that's _designed_ to go in a microwave. My microwave even has a metal stand that you're supposed to put the food on. Been using it for 20 years without incident.
@@epiendless1128 Just read up on this and it appears that thin smooth metal is fine. But to much metal or metal with odd shapes causes sparking which can lead to fires. The later I have seen with my own eyes when I left a spoon in porrage as a kid.

That is a very sandwich maker. Gtt one of the usual ones, that are like a waffle iron, but for sandwiches. It's a super convenient thing, everybody should have one. Only upgrade are those that also double as grill with swappable plates.

A “ready meal” lasagne would be ok, the mince in there is cooked, it just needs reheating. So just use a chilled lasagne.

Heston already done the 'up-scale' pot noodle when he done his 80's Feast when he done a Pot Heston.

Ahh I used to have Tesco Kormas, could never finish them as a kid so spooned out the curry sauce and rise onto buttery toast in the morning for brunch 😂 would have loved to try the toastie action

we bought a couple of these after your reviews and our toastie consumption has gone through the roof. they work a treat. personal favourite, emmenthal, mozzarella, ham/salami, and red pesto.
So sad we can’t get one of these gadgets on this side of the pond😢
As the instructions that come with the toastie; you have to flip it half way through. Then you get a crispy crunch on both sides and a perfect toastie. The best things come to the ones who're patient! - I purchased this amazing product after you recommended the crowdfunding campaign, Barry.

On the initial pre production one he showed, he even read the timings as 3:30 + 3:30 and didn’t flip it.
I was a backer for the Mico products. I have the whole set and I love the toastie the most but the mico potato is pretty dang great too.
This looks like a fun gadget, but the news isn't so much fun: "This item does not ship to the United States" (And nobody seems to sell it here).
Wish/AliExpress maybe?

It's a myth (or rather, an understandable simplification) that you can't put metal in a microwave.
The real rule is, don't put metal in a microwave unless it's metal that's _designed_ to go in a microwave.
My microwave even has a metal stand that you're supposed to put the food on. Been using it for 20 years without incident.
@@epiendless1128 Just read up on this and it appears that thin smooth metal is fine. But to much metal or metal with odd shapes causes sparking which can lead to fires.
The later I have seen with my own eyes when I left a spoon in porrage as a kid.
@@freedomofmotion also helps that the rubber surrounding the metal acts as a ground not allowing electrons to store up
Love this gadget. I have one myself and it’s awesome. But you need the flip it on the other side halfway through for it to toast a bit better xx

@@Clay3613 give it up, ok we live in different place, we all have different names for things, such as bread buns, some call them bap, some say buns and i'm sure other places have other names. to me it's a toastie as you toast it, to you it's a melt, even though you can't melt curry

Everything toasties... you just need to add cheese. Baked beans and ham are a good one...
That is a very sandwich maker. Gtt one of the usual ones, that are like a waffle iron, but for sandwiches. It's a super convenient thing, everybody should have one. Only upgrade are those that also double as grill with swappable plates.

I live in Canada and we've had a standalone appliance version of this thing in my house for as long as I can remember. Same mold shape and everything.
