      If you can't get out of your own way and register a domain and manage your businesses identity. You should expect someone to do something like this. Seriously even small businesses have a responsibility to their customers to do better. I'm old and can't use a computer is a really dumb reason to loose your company. It would have taken very little effort and money for this company to prevent this scam in the first place. I have no sympathy for the business owner; just for any employees who lost their jobs.

    • @its_llew

    • @EthosAtheos
      @EthosAtheos 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@its_llew No, I don't lack respect or empathy. I work in IT and I watch people make these decisions all the time. It has become a mantra of the Boomer generation to say "I don't computer" as if that is a meaningful statement. My grand father rode a horse as a young person and learned to drive a car late in life. He didn't refuse to learn how to do something new. Because learning to do new stuff is hard or something....
      If you own a business you probably registered your business name and a trade mark and all the other basic stuff to setup a business. Creating a web page and having a listing in google search, Facebook, linked in etc. are all part of setting up and managing a business.
      The company I work for suffered a major reputation hit when it didn't take control of the automatically created Facebook business page. People in the company knew the page existed and did nothing.
      I hear people all the time telling poor people about boot straps. But when it is a business that failed to do it's due diligence. We've got to light candles and bail them out. This is a sickness in the USA and we've got to get past it.

      @lampostsamurai2518 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@its_llewhe's not strictly wrong that this is the fault of the business owner for refusing to do the basics of handling the digital end.

      Tbf that isn't fool proof or 100% safe. People have been robbed or in more extreme circumstances deliberately targeted via selling apps with far worse motives.
      Always meet in a public place with cctv & take someone with you if possible. Make sure people know where you're going & can contact you.
      Keep all messages & don't delete until you have confirmation in writing that everything is OK.

By doing this with a few online companies, I then had sort of a reputation for them, that they're reliable, and those of them which exist today, I still use. It's convenient to buy online, but I stick to those I have confirmed work, never buy at a new place. This means there are deals I will not get, but it also means, the probability of being scammed is very low. Either that, or I go to the physical store and place an online order there if possible. Wow that is just crazy. I feel so bad for that business owner who has to deal with the full brunt of the scammers aftermath. He has to deal with everyone's anger,frustration and vitriol. I'm glad it finally got shut down even though it took some pushing to do. I don't know why it was so difficult for CarFax to deal with the situation

    Glad to see a video on this! Someone did this kind of scam with my dads small company. They set up a website where they pretended to be a seller for some construction equipment under my fathers name/ company. We only found out because they didn't answer their calls and some of them found my dads real number and called him, asking to buy the stuff.

    My colleague had the same problem. We live in Belgium and a lot of the German and Dutch websites are scammers. From plants for sale (one I fell for a long time a go) to cars (which are of course much higher prices),… I’ve been asking friends on the radio/journalists for years to cover it. But nobody seems bothered by it. Thank you for doing this. X kind regards

    My parents are super hard working people, not wealthy by any means. I waited a long time to get my license but they still wanted to buy me my first car. They so kindly got me my dream car, a mini cooper.
    We hunted in my state but there aren't many so we looked into having one shipped. Im SO thankful im such a suspicious person because I'm quite sure we almost got scammed with a wire transfer, one dealership lied about 2 accidents on another car. We ended up finding one in the state and its been perfect so far. Im so sad for people that get scammed like this. That $11k was so much for us...

    I bought my car online and the bank sent payment literally 30 minutes before I got to the dealership which was 4 hours away. It was a special edition vehicle and couldn’t find one any closer after three months of searching. Luckily everything went smoothly and spent less than an hour at the dealership signing paperwork. I don’t want to think what I would have done if I got to the dealership and found out I was scammed. This is beyond atrocious and the fact that nobody can do anything about it makes it so much worse!

These scammers really are getting crafty, I always thought I would be able to detect scams right away. They literally made up some sob story that their husband died and they want to get rid of their car because it reminds them of their husband and they don't want to have to look at it anymore. Sick selfish people.

    Kit you're a legend mate, I'd love to see an interview with you sitting down with these guys, them telling their story about how it ruined their entire lives for that period. I recall waking up in the night with a police car parked out the front of our house, my Dad told us they were just parking in a quite place to have late shift lunch. My Dad had a partner called Kit in the customs that had a bad car accident, my Dad took me to see him before he passed on, he told when I was about 6 that he was a real hero. He told me as an adult he had been beaten up by some of the 20 odd bad cops they had both then taken down involved in drugs.

    After I retired I wanted an old car and experienced scam after scam. A car listed in NJ. I lived in CT. As soon as I said I could pick it up in person I was told the car was overnighted to California. The seller also said he worked on an oil rig and was never home. I then had a friend click on the car and miraculously the car was back in NJ. Guy still said he worked on an oil rig. Scammers suck.

    The lengths these scammers go to steal people's money with no regard to who they hurt is so unbelievably sad. But it also saddens me when companies offer no help to people unless you blast them on Twitter. And even then, you need to be someone big with a huge following.
