@@patrickallen4789 hahaha so true, i bought a bmc tmr2. went looking for reviews that made it look good ignored the negatives and bought it anyway. sold it shortly after as i didn't really like riding it.
Yep! I am fond of all of my bikes, but my favorite one is a Frankenbike with 5600 105 set up in 2x10 and rim brakes. No bells, no whistles, not aero, threaded BB. Just perfect simplicity.
I watch GCN regularly and normally within a few days of being released, I like the presenters and they have some decent info or comparisons. However I do also understand that most of their content is sponsored by companies and i think they are pretty upfront about that. GCN is entertainment, if I want product reviews then I'm looking at channels like DC rainmaker, Shane miller (gp lama), Francis Cade, David Arthur (just ride bikes) etc and read multiple articles.
Don't really get the GCN hate. GCN is something we all watch all the time with the family and overall it's probably the only one we haven't dropped after watching for years. The recent Manon gravel Race videos are some of our favourites. Most others get boring as they take themselves a bit too serious.
Consider that Chris' channel here is mostly viewed (and produced by) what I would call expert level cyclists - either someone with past pro experience or someone who has been cycling or racing so long that the more simplistic GCN channel content comes across as too simple (or maybe even condescending) or too commercially oriented for those viewers (acknowledging that some of their channel is bankrolled by big bicycle brands). GCN at their core is a cycling advocacy channel and yes they have quite a few videos aimed at enticing people primarily beginners into cycling so we don't become a minority in the sporting world by being so elitist we discourage newcomers. I see the point of the presenters here but this channel's viewers are not the target audience for GCN pretty much. I love some of the epic ride content and sometimes I do get a tip I've never heard before - sometimes from people posting comments in the videos.
I might be biased, because I love Crit racing. But NorCal Cycling is just such an entertaining channel. It's like a fricken action film every ep. Jeff is such a mastermind with tactics too. So well presented and quality too.
@@benvowles1563 he wasn't.. he was mentioning there's so much better Cycling content out there however, one that's more appealing and has 'wow' factor. Thus, NorCal Cycling.
I disagree, I started cycling 3 or 4 years ago and GCN played an important role in making me passionate about this sport. I learned so many things from how to choose bikes and how to repair and maintain them. obvious that their reviews are not sincere but very few TH-cam reviews are, just know how to judge them and take them for what they are
Same here. GCN was a great jumping-on point when I got into the hobby back in 2020. I was never oblivious to the fact they are basically just spoke people to the bike industry, so I always took their “reviews/press releases” with a grain of salt. And to their defense: each of their sponsored videos is clearly marked as such. As a content machinery for simple-to-understand videos on the hobby, they were (and still are) excellent, but the more knowledgeable I’ve become about cycling, the less I’m inclined to watch any of their videos anymore. I think that has also to do with the fact that I’m mainly into the adventure-side of cycling, rather than the number-crunching-part. Long story short: Yes, they are just spoke people for the bike industry, but as long as you are aware of that, the production value of their videos and their helpfulness to beginners can’t be understated.
TH-cam is so huge there's plenty of space for GCN to comfortably sit alongside better or more informative content. Just because it doesn't appeal to YOU doesn't mean it doesn't appeal to someone else.
Still love the gcn epic rides like si doing king Alfred's way etc. There's probably one good video every 2 weeks now. I just never watch the 10 tips to tie your shoes vids
Hi Rowan, good shout on the epic rides. I’ll make sure to check them out hopefully they have a little bit more of an inspirational factor potentially to show the kids to get them into the sport.
GCN’s biggest problem is they are massive. Like it or not they don’t produce anything that isn’t sponsored and that means they don’t take risks. Their Epic Rides series and some of their tech vids are decent and really helped give me the bug to purchase my first bike at 34. And the TH-cam algorithm started flooding my feed with other channels and helped me find this channel, keep up the awesome work, Chris ✌️
Hey Mr Aspero, I hear what you are saying, but given their budget I don't think that's good enough. GCN is the most popular and highly visible channel we have for our sport on this platform. That's my issue, that as an advertisement for our sport ... it never hits other demographics, just people like us or other middle aged men and women.. You would never show a GCN tech who to a 16 year old and say "check out this cool sport" ... Cheers for the comment man.
@@ChrisMillerCycling I disagree. GCN shouldn't be responsible for being the frontman for the sport. It's their imperative to do whatever they want to do. This is a free market. There are many channel / videos that showcase how cool the sport is if you look wide enough. May be they are not as big as GCN but it's out there. If people think they are not up to the task they can take up the camera and provide alternative like you do.
I fully understand your criticism of GCN, but after two decades away from cycling, their videos really helped me get back to riding back in 2018. With that said, the Matt Stevens era was definitely when their videos were at their pinnacle. They definitely seem to be struggling with coming up with new content.
I think those were the years where they still were somewhat under the radar, and weren't so sponored yet, so they had way more leeway. I noticed the minute they got heavily sponsored, the attitude with Classic and Vintage bikes changed, and it was geared towards steering people away from rediscovering them as servicible rides that you could modernize into enjoyable bikes, and trying really hard to uphold the marketing for all the latest things, including not so indirectly, somewhat dishonestly in recent times, trying to take on the internet forums and indepedent reviewers who dispell the marketing myths of all the latest trend wisdom.
The biggest problem with GCN is there is a limit to the content. A bike is a finite thing. There are only so many ‘how to’ tech videos and riding skills edits that you can do. they’ve made a rod for their own back by aiming to publish so often. I feel like they’ve long since run out of things to talk about. They’ve got a big commercial channel and they need to be putting out four or five films a week. I still watch it, but because it’s there.
Some of the GCN content is still really good, but their pressure to release content every day means that the overall standard is dragged down. Maybe one of 10 videos is quality.
i totally agree with you. not all of it is top quality, i dont mind if they slowed down a bjt for more quality, but to say GCN needs to be cancelled is a bit too far an argument.
@@acky3000 yeah it’s a huge stretch. And a bit unfair on a few of the presenters who are not slobs like Si and Ollie who are both very smart, knowledgeable and personable. It’s just an uneven contribution across the team & episodes etc.
I agree. Many who have followed the channel since the beginning mention the old videos/presenters being better and more relevant. I do see new content being top gear(ish) or a bit pointless some would say, but that is also because the relevant training/maintenance videos have been all done alrealy in many iterations, and they have been releasing literally every day for years! Also, for those who got into cycling years ago, that sort of video becomes a bit pointless, precisely bacause we already 'know/seen' it all by now. Btw, I clearly remember the hilarious Matt/Si/Dan videos of what not to eat/wear on a bike, which were hardly insightful content... Also, years ago all videos were in a single channel, whereas now you have training, racing, tech and general GCN, all of which have regular uploads. Furthermore, GCN is a roadies channel which, as some others have pointed out, is a rather finite subject. If you look into the wider offer from the same company, there are options for MTB, triathlon, and other languages. Yes, there is ad content which can be quite biased, but the product placement is stated, unlike in other 'independent' channels. Impartiality is unfortunately something that would have to be paid for, and who would is this case?... I also don't agree with the criticism of the teenagers/other audiences who won't get into cycling by watching GCN, simply because I don't think it is what they are aiming at, or their purpose is. They clearly aim at the converted, with a few useful additions for those who are considering having a go and look for info, which has to be applauded. Perhaps federations and/or governments should take the resposibility for attracting youth into bikes?... And look at the caliber of UCI productions on TH-cam... 😕 Those are definitely sub standard! I watch some GCN content, and I look elsewhere for advanced stuff on training/maintenance/performance, such as Josh Poerter or Stephen Seiler channels. They are hardly entertaining, and not well produced, but the info/knowledge is top. Other influencers channels have more style and little substance, but can be sleek and engaging. Which one is 'better', I wonder?... It depends on the audience. GCN is clearly not perfect (nothing is) and I think they welcome constructive feedback in the comments, but to say it is S#!t all around is a blanket statement. I do think their latest content on refurb bikes and comparison between high end low and mid range bikes to be very pertinent and myth busting. I know far too many who get the latest because of unproven beliefs on how their 5year old decent gear is holding them back... Btw, self depreciation is very much a British trait, so no wonder it shows so much...
Definitely. I usually just skip all the "how to do this or that" or "10 things to avoid when doing this". I like the epic rides and bike build projects and such, but I mostly just watch the GCN show and the GCN tech show now. Most of their other videos are just filler.
If you think none of their videos are ”cool” then you havent watched enough GCN. They have some amazing videos, especially the long form, adventure/documentary style films. On a number of occasions I have finished a video with nothing but admiration for the riders, the sport of cycling, and inspiration and motivation for myself as an ameteur rider. As others have said, their channel really helped me get going as a beginner.
GCN is an advertising platform. I suspect they know exactly who their target market is and what sort of content is the sweet spot between cost to produce and views. For all the cool people and stuff in cycling, there are plenty of middle aged dorks with disposable income buying expensive things. Cest la vie. Nice show guys - enjoying it.
GCN is fun as long as you see it for what it is. It's basically top gear for bikes. It's mostly just entertaining, but I do like that recently they've actually been giving lower end stuff a bit more love, as it used to be a channel that was all: "You need to have a 10k bike before you are even allowed to be seen on it in public!", I'm happy to see that a big channel like that actually starts showing some content that doesn't scare "new" interested people away by basically telling them they need to spend more on a bike than their car is worth. Personally I mostly prefer watching the "epic rides" in places where I'll never go myself, as their productions are of insane quality. (although it seems to have gone down a bit, but maybe that's because they've been moving more stuff to their GCN+ subscription which I don't have).
You're showing your complete immaturity and lack of humility. GCN is just another channel with a target audience. And the people that watch them, for whatever reason, is no concern of yours. If you don't like the channel, don't watch it, but do not criticize the people who do. There are a lot of beginners out there that have benefited from their show, this one, and many others. They all have their place.
After Matt Stevens and John Canning left I rarely look at GCN vids. Canning had such fervor for bicycles and cycling in general. Zwift, no thanks ride outside!
hi, I am still around at GCN and do bits and pieces on the channel when needed, I have presented a few documentaries on GCN+ too. I am currently recovering from knee surgery and looking forward to getting back on the bike soon
As for the Doping in US racing, I can say as a that unless you are racing BIG races with large payouts (State champs, Notational Champs, the new American Crit Cup, etc) there really isn’t any Anti-Doping sessions at USAC races. My teammate won the Virginia State criterium last year and he was not required to take an Anti-doping test after the win. Basically, unless any other races file an official complaint with the race officials, I don’t imagine there is any Anti-Doping at the smaller local races those big dudes were racing.
I actually got into cycling outdoors and on zwift from GCN, I find GCN good still as I'm a 30 yr old cyclist who just rides for fun and fitness. I can understand competitive cyclist not liking GCN
Hey mate, GCN is the most popular and highly visible channel we have for our sport on this platform. That's my issue, that as an advertisement for our sport ... it never hits other demographics, just people like us or other middle aged men and women.. You would never show a GCN tech who to a 16 year old and say "check out this cool sport" ... Cheers for the comment man.
I used to watch GCN when I first got into cycling. I don’t anymore as the content is so contradictory depending on who’s paying for the episodes. One week it’s aero is the best. Then someone launches a lightweight bike then it’s all about lightweight. One week POC is the best then it’s MET. The presenters have to filter so much in their personal content on socials too. Often see them post an honest opinion only to take it down as soon as a sponsor moans 😂 Oh and you can hear the scooter in the back of every video 😂
I would rather know about build quality of frame (fiber layout, uniformity). Quality of bearings, head tube and mounting system etc to make a good investment for a long lasting bike rather than be bothered with 3W gains of more aero handlebar or 200g lighter.... as a consumer how you know if a mid range Scott, giant, canyon, orbea etc is a good value?
As far as biking content, I love Dylan Johnson's channel. He has tons of informative videos, tons of entertaining race recaps, and funny ones, and you are never confused about which is which. Also, the Vegan Cyclist makes great content - the "Impossible Route" series is so epic and gets me pumped to go suffer on a bike every time! I'm also into crit racing, and NorCal Cycling has great informative race strategy and tactic videos narrating race footage! If y'all did know them, definitely check them out!
Those US crits are a joke. Same team wins and they never want to race outside the US. I once suggested it would be nice to see a certain team in Europe. I got lots of negative comments from the rider and his ball ticklers. Just made me think something Dodgy is going on with the response it received. 🥴
Watched those hardos get destroyed at my local 1.PRO UCI race last year. Half of them were shelled off the back of the peloton before the first real climb
I like some of GCNs videos and don't like some of them but I do find it slightly ridiculous to criticize the production value of their videos when this video looks and sounds the way it does might show a lack of self awareness. If you think cycling needs higher production quality videos then produce them. Most likely it isn't a sustainable business model or it would already exist. If you want to produce enough content to be a successful full time youtuber a cycling focused channel trying to go that route seems like it would swiftly run out of topics that could be produced quickly enough at that quality level to work. Maybe I am just not creative enough to think of the ideas though. If it has an audience looking for the content and you make it for that audience you would fairly quickly start making enough to bring on help but starting out it would be difficult putting in the amount of work until things get rolling.
Im loving this format, please keep it up. I live in the state of Oregon, and we are NOT a USAC affiliated state, racers hold a OBRA ( Oregon Bicycle Racing Association) license, when they race out of the state they are under USAC, so two different licenses. Unless USAC has changed their rules in the last 5 years, only Nationals are drug teated, including Masters.
i'm 56, GCN is cool. I enjoy it. It makes me want to ride. it is informative and entertaining. I don't really see your point to be honest with you. This on the other hand, is interesting, but dryer.
Hey Mick, my point is they target one demographic with their content. Show me 1 video that would be entertaining to a 16 year old kid … or at least something that compares to a ‘fitness’ or even ‘running’ channel video. As for comparing the this channel to them … mate, give me the budget they have to do a chat show and I promise you something a millions times better (and broader reaching) then the “GCN Show” 🥱.
I’m 55 and most of their videos are pointless. Don’t get me wrong the odd one is interesting like Manon was doing a massive US gravel race but will a massive body builder beat a good cyclist up a hill 🤦♀️ I wonder who will win.
@@ChrisMillerCycling I mean... I'm 18 and I probably wouldn't have gotten into cycling at all if it wasn't for gcn. I still agree they have their issues but I don't agree that none of their videos appeal to my age group
No offense. GCN is cool for 50+ people, not 16-25 socially cool people with who likes Hypebeast, Yeezys, Fear Of God, etc. It’s like the entire channel is trying to act like “people with class” but end up looking like dorks in ugly looking kits with cheesy characters. I do have to point out that I like contents that has “a contemporary class” to them, but again, GCN are like 2022 Marvel movies, no plot, just cheesy characters
@@ChrisMillerCycling , I mean, it's not for a lack of budget that one camera is out of focus and the other has flickering. Just drop or increase the shutter speed slightly. It's not a moving shot, no one will notice if it's not double the frame rate.
In the US, there is just not much anti-doping testing. Every once in a while, a person I've raced gets popped, and it always makes me wonder how many people who race here are on something.
After pulling apart and repairing a couple of Wahoo Tickr units, it seems they are purposefully manufactured with a level of planned obsolescence. The internal circuit board is only connected to the cases button snaps via a thin mild steel springs to provide contact and then the board screwed down allowing quick/cheap manufacturing. The battery cover has a nice rubber seal, but the bonding of the two case halves isn't perfect which allows moisture to find it way inside and quickly convert the springs to rust. This results in the glitchy, dropouts, sticky values that were all use to seeing. The solution was to replace the spring with thin gauge wire, soldered to both the circuit board and the internal side of the button snap creating a much better connection. From a manufacturing standpoint this would be prohibitively expensive, and you wouldn't be going out to buy a new HRM from them every 6 months of heavy use... Conductive ultrasound gel would also go a long way to solving the winter HRM issues Jessie has, the conductive pads don't work very well once they dry out so even wetting them before exercise will eventually result in issues if you don't sweat enough during.
I agree with Nero (18:30). I miss the simple vids from back in the day with Simon, Daniel, Matt that talked about how to climb hills, how to train with power zones, what to wear in cold weather etc. I'm like to learn by watching, such as bar taping, derailleur indexing, and the like. I'm less interested in the blingy bike made of gold and diamonds, or if a 1980s Peugeot is faster going up a hill than a 2022 Emonda (or whatever) and more about the new tech, science of aero and what not. Great Podcast vid!
You guys are to advanced for GCN. As a middle of the road rider, i love GCN 👍 plus, i think they try to answer a lot of people's questions. Like such as the comparison between old steel bikes and the new stuff. Plus, if they sucked, they wouldn't have so many views. The masses have voted 👍
True. It's like try finding organges in a basket Of apples. They cater to a different segment of people. They are fun to watch, and entertaining. They appeal to us, the beginners and general people. I obviously would not compete in UCI or any tournament, but would love riding and may some occcasional audax.
Doesn’t the GCN platform content now reach out to the broader cycling community including first timers as well as the high end? The broader being the majority of the market? I’ve fixed many problems on the bike with GCN content as well as the watched those Euro racing during the wee hours of shift-work. Maybe as GCN grew and more corporatised, the uniqueness gloss started to wear thin for some. I started watching at the start of GCN, I’m still watching GCN, but now just choose my content.
GCN lost me when Alex and Manon came on board. I still like watching the challenges that they do, but since Matt and Jon left, and Lloyd took a back seat, it just isn't the same show.
Jon and Matt were great. I can still listen to Matt when he is doing race commentary, but I really miss Jon geeking out about cycling tech. I'd rather watch Doddy's GMBN Tech than anything on GCN and I don't even own a MTB.
@King Of Crunk I was wondering about that too. But it is possible it was his decision and the reason being, he wasn't paid properly for his effort. That's my guess anyway. I don't trust people who disguise advertisement as advice.
One thing ive realised since reading these comments is the excitement for cycling by gcn presenters Menon fk me is dull as fk and the other guy also is introverted, whereas Canning was a nerd who loves cycling and raved about it and they don't have anyone who does they and there vids are just mediocre..off the back of that
@@leedorney Yeah, Jon is in the same league as Calvin from Park Tool. At first it's like "what's wrong with him?" but then you realize that he's truly a nerd that is totally immersed in his element.
Great conversation guys. Glad you are calling GCN out, some GCN videos are becoming like "dad jokes" and really naff. They are like the TV show "Top Gear"! The GCN tech show is okay but the rest is going down hill fast. Lantern Rouge is my go to channel now. Love his no nonsense voice and detailed explanations of racing content.
Genuinely have no idea what you're talking about with the GCN stuff. Without them I would have never gotten into cycling and I would not be watching your videos now. They're the perfect gateway into this hobby. My other hobby is videogames and the first thing you find on youtube is IGN. Gamesjournalism with the depth of a puddle (like GCN), but the perfect way to get started. Eventually you just move on to better things. I think these channels need to exist.
As a runner GCN motivated me to get into cycling, bikepacking and overall fitness improvements. Their videos are obviously more for beginners and as experienced cyclist maybe you don't find value in it, but as an amateur cyclist I find value in it. You just have to choose which video is for you and which one is not. For example je GCN Show is not for me so I don't watch it however a gravel race or a bikepacking trip is more interesting for me. You cannot put every video in the same bag, they do so much different stuff, are so diversified that it's not possible.
I think the GCN style is a feature not a bug. There are tons of cool cycling videos (epic rides, exotic locations, drone shots, anything with justin williams in it, rapha-ad-vibes... I like rapha a lot, but the cool style is also becoming a parody of itself in a way), but GCN much more reflects the experience and attitude (and sadly also attire) of most riders. And the most popular is almost never the coolest, it's kind of by definition. GCN embraces it, I think the presenters are doing a great job. The real problem is that they have to produce too much stuff.
I care about the review, that's why I research the heck out of my bike products and watch Shane and DC. I have Assioma power meter and I purchased it based on Shane's review.
I've had my polar h10 for 4 years now with no issues, the strap is still as good as the day I got it. Are you using Bluetooth or ant+ for connection? Maybe there is massive interference in the 2.4ghz range that ant+ uses in that part of Sydney?
You know, the beauty about TH-cam is its offering of various vibes catering the same interest. You cant assume a regular joe having the same level of commitment or the same depth of interests as an enthusiasts. Channels like GCN cant present themselves too seriously or they'll risk alienating the general 'recreational cyclist' which takes up the largest share in the market. For the rest of us who are already seasoned, chances are we already subscribed to other niche channels that offer finer details, which is why your channel exists btw. While I do smirk at some of the cringy stuff GCN does but i do understand the viewers they are targeting. 16 yo mindset with deep pockets? Im fine with that.
Living in Warwick - winter temps a frequently below zero. I use a squeeze bottle loaded with conductive gel and have had no issues with hrm chest straps. The one bottle has lasted 4 years to date and there's plenty left in it. Alternate between Garmin HRM Run and Pro for hygiene and cleanliness.
GCN might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's size and presence and relative safety (it's relatively polished and not really saying or doing anything controversial) goes some way towards legitimising cycling in the wider world. Cycling can be a lot of things which won't necessarily align with everyone's values, and we can all imagine the content being better, but my "better" won't necessarily be your "better" or anyone elses "better", sometimes they produce something that reminds me that cycling is enjoyable, and there are very few cycling channels that do that.
GREAT SHOW GUYS! Really objective, I love it! I love the honesty! So, Zwift Academy...I LOVE IT, TOO! I am a complete amateur cyclist - I want to be competitive, but age and experience limit me. So, the academy - why do I love it? The workouts are thoughtful and tailored to my needs - I think the pre-ride (baseline ride) helps EVERYONE. I have actually increased my FTP 8 points this week - about 5 percent - so, it's working for me. I really like it. Shimano power meter issue...welll, I'm interested in this because I'm kind of a techie nut when it comes to bicycles - I build my own, when I can get parts - and right now, what I use for a power meter, is a Stages Left crank arm with my Shimano Ultegra mechanical setup. NO ISSUES! Stages is great. I'm sure 4iiii is great, too. I'm sure there are others - but, yeah - thanks for the heads-up on the Shimano stuff...I'll stay away from it! Cheers, mates - looking forward to the next show!
Totally agree. Zwift is great oportunity and I enjoyed watching finals. I got left Stages Shimano Ultegra power crank and no issues as well. I get good feedback about my fitness level and I really dont need right side powermeter.
Are you a cycling snob? There's a lot of them out there. I've met a lot of them throughout my many cycling years. GCN is good for what it is. If you are a very serious cyclist give it a break, lighten up man, there's people that love cycling without geeking out. GCN covers a wide range of anything to do with cycling from first starters to people wanting to get more advanced info, its entertainment. This subject is good for your channel because you rock the boat to get viewers.
Love the discussion! I’ll wait for Raoul to cut it in half and for Hambini to roast it. Those are reviews. Most other content, including GCN, are simply advertisements and pretty pictures. I just mute the sound and study the pictures. It’s usually obvious where the issues might be. But, of course, I’m watching because I’m interested in the topic, not because I’m actually going to drop 10k on a POS barrister bike.
GCN didn't bring me to the sport, but gave me so many good tips through my different stages as a cyclist. The really newbie ones like how to change a tyre and great stuff as training sessions that keep me sane during covid locked up. I'm really thankful that a channel like that exists for we, the average cyclist, that don't give a shit if Shimano Dura ace power meter is failing, because we are never going to be able to afford it hehe. Kudos to you too for opening a space for those guys too!
Thats up to the viewers. Not all channels can produce daily content for cycling enthusiasts. If you want a review, you can search many other channels for them. I believe GCN is a great form of entertainment and great for cycling, not many riders are so passionate for cycling to watch 37min videos. GCN do great and their audience confirms it.
the great news about canyon fitting shimano powermeters is that they're still having supplying issues for them in europe and ship bikes with rotor cranks instead
On reviewers, if I know someone is being provided the stuff they review, it's going to instantly taint my viewpoint. And I DO use reviews for purchases. I bought the Favero Assioma Duos based on DC rainmaker's review of them, and never looked back. They are outstanding. On GCN, anything relating to products is basically an advertorial, and many times I think they say as much. So, no interest in that stuff. And yeah, I'm a little tired of "Hey, can an amateur on an E-bike beat a pro on a Penny Farthing" or whatever. You know what I mean. But I do love their films/documentaries, and if it has Mark Beaumont in it, I think it's good. On another note, when it was Matt Stephens, Loydy and Si it seemed more "real", and honestly, those three together were a riot. This is going to sound like a certain latino beer commercial, but I don't love indoor riding, but when I do it, Zwift is it. There's too many reasons to list and nothing else comes close. Community is everything. On content providers not editing their own content, the problem I have isn't with the idea of not editing your own stuff, but it's the trust you would have to have in the editor understanding what you are trying to say. I mean, that's the power of editing. You might have a thousand clips, but to mash it all together into something that says what you want it to say, I think you would have to do it yourself. Or at least, if you have the budget, a pro editor and the content provider can sit down and work through it clip by clip. On cycle racing in the U.S. I can't speak to it, because I live in the midwest, and everything around here revolves around gravel. And I have no idea what is sanctioned or isn't or whatever. On another note, thanks for the real chat. It's interesting.
Love the pivot to this show. Maybe having a way for people to send in some Q&A questions could fuel the conversation. But doesn’t seem like you’re lacking inspiration for conversation, always plenty of controversy in cycling
Crankarm based power meters can’t auto-zero if you are clipped in. Same goes for pedals. The only power meters than can reliably auto-zero are spiders.
Climb to Kaiser shirt!! I live there and I'm part of the FCC. Kudos for that. However, two guys (one out of focus) sitting stationary in front of cheap microphones bashing others and only having 27k followers calling out a 3.5m follower channel is hilarious. As far as editing your own videos... meh! Once you get to a point where you need an editor, then you can talk about other channels.
My HR strap is a Garmin from the forerunner 305 era. It has NEVER once glitched that i have noticed... low-intensity, high intensity etc. Good thing i never needed to "upgrade"
Is the issue that shimano power meters are totally inaccurate or just reading low? If the power meter reads consistently low it’s accurate to how it collates data.
I think its more for beginners using zwift academy. Because I know I'm not ever going pro just based on my vo2 max. I'd rather do my training on my time and start it when I want to start it for the upcoming season of club racing so I can carry my fitness throughout the summer
Think your comments on GCN are a tad too harsh. It is hard to appeal to all demographics, as you yourself probably know. The video I just started watching of theirs (after yours) was on Zwift Academy as well. No one channel can do it all (ie appeal to all demographics). Take the good from the various sources and filter out what you may see as bad (I don't think it is quite as bad as the bias you are viewing things through, but each to their own!). Bias is a good word to use, because once you start having bias against a certain channel, you will start to pick up on lots more things that will irritate you about that channel. There was a recent video on training peaks, was great hearing about how it all started etc, yes there are many I don't watch, but also many I do....each to their own. As for the power meter stuff, people should care. If people actually did their research they would not buy it. There are far cheaper and far more accurate products on the market. Shimano should not be selling that crap, or change the specs. Shane (GPLama) has a great following, but I am sure that the issues with these 4 arm non symmetrical crank arm setups are not as widely known as you think (because I know a heap of my mates have no idea and have blindly brought similar systems). It would be fine if, say, it is consistently 5 watts low, but the way it behaves is not consistent at all (apart from being consistently bad), so you really have no idea how close to real the numbers are that you are seeing, and if you are using it for very precise pacing (eg for me, 90k TT's targeting 85-87.5% FTP as part of a tri), then having something that is unreliable really is crap for the money you pay for this product (when for less than half that you can get something super rock solid and accurate).
Can’t we challenge a channel with 3M subs, who is the most visible advertisement for our sport to make more diverse content? If not … I think we are all taking ourselves too seriously.
@@ChrisMillerCycling being devils advocate, you could turn around and say that the very reason they have 3M subs is because of the content that they are providing.....could they get more if they diversified? Maybe?? Do they likely appreciate the power that they may potentially yield over shaping aspects of cycling, especially for newer people? Probably, but maybe not to the extent you might feel. I also hope you don't take my use of the word "bias" the wrong way. Part of my job is in dealing with different forms of bias on a daily basis. Like you almost certainly do, I have many overt and subconscious biases, especially some towards certain content providers on the net (a certain smelly Asian fruit comes to mind). Just your views on GCN might cloud most content that they come out with. Personally, their triathlon relative, GTN, does a great job and I don't think suffers with the issues you are talking about. Maybe in part as that space on TH-cam is far less crowded than the cycling space. Always enjoy your chats and your videos by the way, appreciate the opportunity to have a robust conversation.
I have never seen a PED test at a race, but I think it only happens at the national level. I signed a document with USA cycling that says I won't dope. I suspect race organizers don't spend the money on the tests. Local events are normally put on by a club, or a small race organizer.
Love high-end components, but have no need for many of the features their latest iterations come with. I'm past 40, I ride a few 1000 km per year just for the fun of it, the occasional granfondo/sportif thrown in. I do not need a powermeter! And any manufacturer asking me to spend 2000 $/£/€ more for a gadget I don't have any use for won't sell a bike to me.
pro-tip: if you don't want to screw YT recommendations by watching random stuff use incognito/private mode or a different account. The GCN on-screen talent are great. GCN's problem is basically YT-led in that they have to constantly rapidly turn out new content to keep the algorithm rewarding them, and having their stuff high on everyone's recommendations. There's a lot of filler, albeit entertaining, but it can be repetitive and reductive. But we still watch because the presenters are watchable!
I try to look at /read as many reviews as possible, I recently bought a new bike and read 2 reviews and watched 2 video reviews, 1 said the brakes were adequate, another said it should be your first upgrade, 2 said they were great and I've actually found them to be quite good
It depends who you ask. If you ask people about simple hydraulic disc brakes like a MT 200, a German (the best is barely good enough for them) will state it's a bad brake, while people from the Asian-Pacific area will say it's a georgeous brake since it's far better than a cable brake
I bought Stages power meters installed into Shimano crankset few years back, i had no glue about issues with right side, and i tend to search far and wide for reviews of such expensive items. But granted there is very little information of Stages right sided powermeter, it's all about the left side. It was way cheaper than what Shimano does cost and reading low isn't the main problem because i can look at power balance after the ride and surmise my actual wattage from there if in doubt. Heck i even contacted customer service for something related to power reading and got bit harsh reply. Had no idea that i poked at anthill.
On the last topic (HR monitors): I have Garmin and a cheap Chinese MIO. Both are great under assumption I buy a replacement strap every 6-12 months (depending on conditions I ride). Replacement strap costs 6-ish USD and save a lot of frustrations.... Regards!
When I was getting back into road riding after moving to the UK, I searched epic UK road biking and gcn really inspired me to get much more serious about my riding and actually ride 5 times a week on different roads
GCN and its broader cycling media group is also heavily sponsored by park tool, canyon and more. They reviewed back packs and my take away from it was that you should buy the Deuter, Deuter or Deuter. This was the breaking point for me in GCN pushing products which while they might be good, they're not providing a global view of the market. I commented on that video and had a lot of people responding to me, slamming me for my comments.
My main issues with GCN are: they have essentially becoming and advert for certain cycling brands, their videos have become stale (how many change a tire videos can one watch), not a fan of the current crop of host. I think it’s has some good videos for getting into the sport and learning some basics. I have much preferred smaller cycling channels in these past 3-4 years. Bike reviews are important to me for for only one reason. To see what other bikes to compare it to, to learn if it has any defect or pita components. The way I see it, nearly all modern bikes are great unless they have some type of defect. There is nothing more annoying than watching a review and hearing “this bike is fast standing still” or any other corny form of promotion. They say same thing every time. I’ve purchased my last 3 bikes without even test riding them and have had no issues.
Great stuff. Please continue. I'm waiting for question about base training for imbitious amatour because it's for sure different than the pro level due to having 10-12 hours max instead of 20+?
With heart rate monitors, the straps and contact points are the weak link. Try using WD 40 specialist Contact Cleaner on the "press stud" type contacts. Any sweat degrades the electrical contact giving faulty readings. WD 40 contact cleaner is non oily, fast drying leaves no residue and it works. Available at Bunnings. This is not an ad, it does work , but most HR monitor straps are just crap.
Regarding HR monitors…I bought the Wahoo Tckr Fit armband optical (rechargeable) and the thing is sweet…..you don’t even notice it on your arm, it syncs quicker with head unit, hasn’t dropped connection ever for me, doesn’t slide down (used to happen to me when trail running), doesn’t come unsnapped and end up inside your jersey somewhere 😂. I have used chest straps for years and happy to say I’m done with them, you should give it a go!!!
1. In the US, doping has spread to more than just racing. Recreational rides have seen an odd uptick in performance. Since the COVID pandemic started riders, mainly middle aged (45-55) have seem massive gains in performance. It can't be improvements to technology and training. Someone near me once rode everyday for nearly two months and never had an average speed below 19.5 mph. To never feel fatigue is impressive. Another guy had solo rides that were nearly equal to TTs. Another person was doing 3-6 (imperial) centuries a week for two months with all above 18.5 mph. Again, that ability to never feel tired is impressive (especially when he did 3 days in a row). The reason some are willing to go down that rabbit hole is because of things like Strava (they need attention). 2. There are two parts to GCN. The videos that are meant for entertainment tend to be fairly enjoyable. The informational videos are poor. Most are geared towards the shift that the cycling industry is pushing for, but doesn't fit into the needs of most riders. 3. Honestly, most people don't care about actual reviews. As long as the equipment is said to be fast, more aero, lighter, etc people buy it.
Zwift academy what's the point , unless u are going for the finals or u are someone under 35 and just want to compare yourself to top athlete's from around the world who could be pro level, and yeah GCN it's never been the same since Matt Stephens back then they weren't taking themselves to seriously , now they just pretend not to take themselves seriously ! They really dropped the ball when they had Justin Williams on the show and the did like what 20 questions , they should have paid him to ride his bike round some crit like circuit and not telling us how to corner or sprint but how he loves to dive into a corner or the sense of speed when trying to beat another rider to the line !
I have cycled for 50 years as a Commuter, remote area Tourer, Mountain biker and recently Road & Gravel biking. GCN caters to all styles and levels of biking. The presenters are chilled & talented & give cycling an element of fun. Every episode of GCN gives me new insights. Every episode of GCN gives me new insights. It's a fun show. Your show is equally good but in a different way. My only criticism is that you take it too seriously which disenfranchises people new to cycling. Concentrate on your show as criticisms of other cycling shows doesn't take cycling further
24:00 look how I look. I've never in my life took steroids. I'm Almost 50. People blame me for taking them but I've never in my life even taken protein shakes creatine shades or anything. Now I'm not saying you're wrong that this guy is clean. What I'm saying is that some of us look like we do it but we don't.
Enjoyed it again, but looking at it it is easy to get GCN “funny” in a video…. Question: is it bad to read to low on a Powermeter if it is consistent? Always 2% low is always the same (and may even be correct - but that may be to philosophical for a cycling channel) and will help with training. (I use the Assiomas by the way and I see Mathieu having problems with his Shimano one sometimes also). What should a real test of a bicycle look like? Would it be: the specs show blablablabla, after riding it for x amount of km’s, split over y sort of terrain I experienced the following …. and this compares to my every day bike as so and so? Or different? Should it not be in experience but in data only? How do they do it with cars?
Today I had the Dura-Ace FC-R9200-P and the new Ultegra FC-R8100-P cranks in my hands and they are heavy. I like the design, especially the glossy black of the Dura-Ace... but they are not worth the price.
For heart rate monitors, I highly suggest you try Garmins Tri/Pro/Pro+. They are waterproof / designed with swimming in mind. I’ve never had one go bad or drop out. It retains battery way longer than the Polar H10- only downside is that it takes the 2032 dime batteries.
90%+ of GCN’s content is sponsor/partner driven these days. It’s like one long informercial. We do not need 5 videos per week comparing (promoting) Shimano groupsets!
Hey mate, honestly the fact they are eventually funded my commercial arrangements, I mean lets be honest pretty much every successful broadcasting channel is … I’m really talking about the content itself … it’s bloody awful. So much money to produce that stuff … it doesn’t reflect well on the sport.
I’m amazed. I have a giant propel fitted with Ultegra which has the Shimano dual power meter. I noticed that my data was showing that I was left leg dominate. My readings always show readings around the 53/47 mark. I thought that was strange. I knew there was no way I was using my left leg that much more. I’m also disappointed to hear that the power meter is giving me low power output readings. I will carry out regular calibrations and see if that helps.
The problem with GCN is it produced placement channel so everything is topend and they won't slaga item off as they would loss the product's end of channel
Also, not sure if DCRainmaker can't move the needle. That guy has been spot on for me on so many products. I know what i want. Then i have a lot of influence on my circle of people and can change their minds. You throw in thousands of people watching DCRainmaker's videos, and i feel you can move that needle.
I hear what you're saying but I find every GCN video entertaining and educational. When I was researching the Boardman SLR 8.9 road bike, they made a video comparing it to other bikes at the same price. If you don't like their videos I totally get that.
Most bike reviews are watched by people (myself included) desperate for confirmation bias that the bike we already have our sights set on is perfect.
This 👆🏾! Top comment.
Lol so true. I just want to see my future purchase in the flesh.
Hahah Iv only ever watched a bike review AFTER I bought a bike 😂
David arthur?lol
Yeah I agree. I’d also add that their GCN+ documentaries are fantastic and well worth paying a subscription for.
David Arthur? hahaha
He does paid stuff most of the time.
Love Norcal as well
Ive embraced the Norcal religion
Did I miss something? I don't think norcal is the account Jesse is talking about
@@benvowles1563 he wasn't.. he was mentioning there's so much better Cycling content out there however, one that's more appealing and has 'wow' factor. Thus, NorCal Cycling.
Oh yeah duh, man I need a coffee!
I disagree, I started cycling 3 or 4 years ago and GCN played an important role in making me passionate about this sport. I learned so many things from how to choose bikes and how to repair and maintain them. obvious that their reviews are not sincere but very few TH-cam reviews are, just know how to judge them and take them for what they are
But the Videos in like 2015 were so much better than today. It was totally different chanel.
Same here... GCN ftw
Well said! GNC helped me out so much!!!
_I guess that you now know how to _*_wash your bike,_*_ thanks to _*_GCN._*
Yeah the epic rides are really good 👍🏾
Totally agree, the rest of the videos are just a bit of fun for when I'm bored or sat on the trainer
This is 💯 there are types of GCN pieces like the epic rides that are still quite excellent.
Definitely. For me any content with Si is great. Love it. The general videos coming from GCN are stupid, and I've unsubscribed.
I've been watching Matt over at Sigma Sports channel.
GCN motivated me to get back into road cycling and it informed me about some of the basics! GCN german is good, if you understand it 😃
If you think none of their videos are ”cool” then you havent watched enough GCN. They have some amazing videos, especially the long form, adventure/documentary style films. On a number of occasions I have finished a video with nothing but admiration for the riders, the sport of cycling, and inspiration and motivation for myself as an ameteur rider. As others have said, their channel really helped me get going as a beginner.
i like the multiple videos they release each year about what to carry on my bike and how to use a thru-axle. top tier
Cheers for the comment Nick. Sorry for the audio stuff ups and the camera mess up, but we’ll get there. Thanks again. Chris.
Exactly correct.
After Matt Stevens and John Canning left I rarely look at GCN vids. Canning had such fervor for bicycles and cycling in general. Zwift, no thanks ride outside!
Those two Presenter is the most passionate presenter.
Such shame .
John Canning is head of GCN+ now
hi, I am still around at GCN and do bits and pieces on the channel when needed, I have presented a few documentaries on GCN+ too. I am currently recovering from knee surgery and looking forward to getting back on the bike soon
Matt yes, John not so much. Matt and Si will always be my favorite, Ollie is like a Matt replacement

Often see them post an honest opinion only to take it down as soon as a sponsor moans 😂
Oh and you can hear the scooter in the back of every video 😂
Love the gcn guys hate the topics
Zwift. GCN.. Two unnecessary and irrelevant things in cycling. Wheel your bike out the door, get on it and pedal. That is cycling.
True. It's like try finding organges in a basket
Of apples. They cater to a different segment of people. They are fun to watch, and entertaining. They appeal to us, the beginners and general people. I obviously would not compete in UCI or any tournament, but would love riding and may some occcasional audax.
... too* advanced ...
THANK YOU!!! i appreciate your genuine thoughts and not the filtered ones brought on buy sponsors / "cycling industry" keep it up.
@@chrisko6439 To be fair, GCN is still good for learning how to pump up a tire, clip in, or switch gears.😅
Love his no nonsense voice and detailed explanations of racing content.
... I also like watching Cam Nicholls
If I see one more 'Top 10 mistakes beginners make' video, there's going to be a murder.
Love CGN - great fun. Sometimes I also learn stuff. Cycling is fun!
Just found your channel, I’m from England & your pods are pure honest & really cool!
The 5-year-old chartered engineer keeps the industry clean.
As long as you're not a hairdresser.......
I like the GCN weekly news reports as a way to catch up on the latest developments and races.
Great video guys. New here and it's good to hear some different perspectives. Thanks
Don’t think I’ve ever made it to the end of a GCN TH-cam video.
so I am thinking about getting meter..which would be the best option?
Living in Warwick - winter temps a frequently below zero. I use a squeeze bottle loaded with conductive gel and have had no issues with hrm chest straps. The one bottle has lasted 4 years to date and there's plenty left in it. Alternate between Garmin HRM Run and Pro for hygiene and cleanliness.
@chrismiller ,what watch is that ?
Really enjoy the 2 of u chatting...pls keep it up.
Thank you! Will do!
Wout van Aert actually complained about his Shimano PM after worlds last year beacuse it was misreading in the ITT
GCN is great to me as random white noise while I'm doing other stuff
Love the discussion! I’ll wait for Raoul to cut it in half and for Hambini to roast it. Those are reviews. Most other content, including GCN, are simply advertisements and pretty pictures. I just mute the sound and study the pictures. It’s usually obvious where the issues might be. But, of course, I’m watching because I’m interested in the topic, not because I’m actually going to drop 10k on a POS barrister bike.
I’ve skipped watching reviews and just go straight to dream bike build videos. It’s basically bike porn with really good soundtracks 😂
Guys, your cameras are not focusing properly.
Hard to watch. But keep up the good work and the conversations are interesting.
the great news about canyon fitting shimano powermeters is that they're still having supplying issues for them in europe and ship bikes with rotor cranks instead
Very well thought out response or at least I agree with everything you said so of course it seemed well thought out to me
Love the pivot to this show.
@GPlama found the L/R balance is consistently 50/48, with the right reading low.
Loving the show and the format, couldn't agree more about HR monitors
What has always bothered me about cycling is the snobs. Just relax guys.
GCN is awesome for what it is.
pro-tip: if you don't want to screw YT recommendations by watching random stuff use incognito/private mode or a different account.
Regards!
Not sure what your point is on GCN...perhaps it was to also insult their 3.01M subscribers?
GCN is mostly entertainment but I personally don't take issue with them.
They do put out useful information and try to help people get into cycling.
Now about the guy on steroids and being able to race. That is just ridiculous. He should be exposed and removed from the cycling racing world.
Hey guys new to your show, it's great, have either of you ridden on a rocker plate during your indoor sessions?
28:55 all road races near me are under USAC sanction. MTB races are not always and most cyclocross races are.
Today I had the Dura-Ace FC-R9200-P and the new Ultegra FC-R8100-P cranks in my hands and they are heavy. I like the design, especially the glossy black of the Dura-Ace... but they are not worth the price.
They are heavy ? Both cranksets?
Do you the Cyclespeed Tours channel (Mallorca)? Interesting ,honest not biased reviews
Loving it, thank you. Keep 'em coming. Great format, great content . . . just get your focus and sound worked out . . .😉😝
Really enjoying the format and the topics guys. Nice one
I hear what you're saying but I find every GCN video entertaining and educational. When I was researching the Boardman SLR 8.9 road bike, they made a video comparing it to other bikes at the same price. If you don't like their videos I totally get that.
