Just so it’s clear: Meraki sent me this machine to test and make a video. There was no payment otherwise. The thoughts are my own, and Meraki did not get to see the video ahead of time.

People talking about the price for plastic keep forgetting ALL the features here in any other machine cost twice as much. Now obviously, I can’t speak to the quality of this machine at all but…
Even if the grinder is no better than an Encore EXP, that’s $200; two scales another $100; rotary pump; PID; dual (stainless steel) boilers; HUGE cool touch steam wand WITH temperature sensor; brew volume by weight; grind by weight. I discount the RF reader because unless a ton of roasters get on board, it’s just a gimmick. If it’s just a plastic case to keep the price down, there’s nothing to see here. As long as the guts are solid, this could be a fantastic machine for the price.

@@mamadouaziza2536 Breville's equivalent machines like the Oracle or Oracle Touch have very little plastic other than the interior mounting brackets for its electronics and some internal casings. Only the cheaper machines like the Infuser or Barista Express use plastic almost all around.

Who cares? If it lasts 3 to 4 years, you'll be getting your money's worth especially if you are buying ice vanilla lattes every day at Starbucks ($6.50 USA dollars)..
Ninja has a new $500 espresso machine with grinder and auto milk (porta filter type).

    Nice review.
    Some points to consider:
How does the machine resolve flow versus pressure?
I see no metering of the pressure mentioned.
Does the pump just try to run at the same rate irrespective of the pressure?
I presume you can do a crude form of pre-infusion by turning off the pump near first drip and then turning back on after 5-10 seconds, but it would be nice, as an option, if the pump ran fast at the start with low pressure then held at 3 bar until 1+g had emerged before gradually ramping up the pressure.
A rapid ramp up of pressure before the puck is saturated risks breaking the puck integrity caused channeling.
I can answer the question about the leveler after performing many tests myself.
No, it does not do a good job of distributing the coffee if it is uneven.
If the grinder throws fines into one location of the cup, the uneven density does not get fixed by the leveller.
    Same for voids.
Also, even if the coffee is evenly distributed, such a leveler moves the coffee at the top of the puck more than at the bottom and this can result in a horizontal shear line in the puck (in my case usually about 2/3 of the way down).
This results in side channeling at this point and less extraction from the coffee at the bottom of the puck.

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thanks for that thorough comment! My source at the company said the water circuit is calibrated to max out at 9 bar. There is no flow or pressure regulation or measuring, as far as I can tell. I tried doing a manual pre-infusion, but turning it off after first drip is not ideal, because the solenoid opens, and water above the puck is evacuated, essentially destroying the puck and extraction in my opinion. They'd have to at least keep the solenoid closed, but there's no such option at this point. I think they could add that however, with some programming, as an additional option in a future firmwared version.

Great review of a very interesting machine. Once it gets past the kickstarter phase if Meraki could make a deal with Costco for distribution it would be an ideal partnership since Costco already sells automatic machines which are more expensive and the return policy at Costco would help overcome resistance to investing that much on a start-up product.

I am seriously intrigued by the machine as I would really like to upgrade my very entry-level espresso machine with something new. I am currently wondering between the new Ninja Luxe and this one. Only thing I wish that would exist is to save grinding profiles for different kind of beans and maybe even change grinding settings via the display. I'm currently researching to upgrade my old Rancilio Silvia, and I was planning to get the new generation Rocket Apartamento but Meraki seems like a really good deal. Early bird price is little more than $1k and for that price you get scales, PID, dual boiler, rotary pump and a lot of cool tech. Seems to good to be true, where is the catch?
Plasticky feel and look is definitely the biggest downside especially compared to the sexy Apartamento, but then again, this is very competitively priced.

I was left with the feeling that the Meraki is 3 separate machines mounted together and that it would be MUCH nicer if the coffee grinder was not attached as it would allow the machine to be much more narrow. IMO, Meraki should consider making models without the grinder.

I strongly dislike this machine for several reasons: first is build quality. I am not against using plastic for parts where it actually makes sense or to keep the price down, but I think this is one of the machines that claims to be using quality parts, when its really just a few quality parts that they can then advertise to make it sound better, even though those parts are not really anything special and the rest of the machine is even poorer quality. The second is automization and especially repairability. It might look nice and have loads of features, but good luck getting replacement parts for this, if a hose ever comes loose on the inside and cooks the electronics. Also I am not sure, who the target audience is for this machine. People that know how to make espresso will not want a plastic-bomber like this machine, whereas newbies won`t need all the features. I think it is really important to start on a manual machine to actually understand how espresso works. It is really not that hard and is extremely rewarding. This machine takes that experience away from you. Espresso is not as easy as putting a Nespresso pod in a machine and it isn`t meant to be. It is an art and a skill that you need to learn and that then can be applied to almost all other machines. This is why I also do not like the Sage/Breville machines or anything similar, because they try to automate a process that can`t be automated because it relies on skill and intuition and not on numbers alone. There is no shame in not wanting to buy expensive espresso gear. There is no shame in not wanting to invest many hours into learning how to operate a portafilter-machine and all the parameters to control. But if you want good espresso, there is no way around it. There is no short-cut, as any short-cut will ultimately lead to frustration and bad espresso. People need to understand that there is no such thing as a cheap espresso machine. The same way that if you want face-time, you have to buy an Iphone and not a cheap android. If you want to get into espresso, go to a shop that specializes in these machines. Please don`t buy these automated machines with displays and tons of features. They are not build to last and you will ultimately frustratedly give up on the beautiful thing that is espresso.

      Geez.. It's not that deep.
The build quality is no less than say a Delonghi or Jura super automatic machine. Have you used a Breville Barista Touch Impress? That machine has a lot of plastic on it and it costs $1500 USA dollars. Dr. Coffee makes a few super automatic machines made of quality plastic and those machines are super popular in Asian countries...
Obviously this machine uses aluminum and steel where needed..
Also for the average espresso drinker who isn't interested in all the work that goes into making an espresso shot or cappuccino will buy this type of machine..This is the reason why Breville machines and Delonghi, Saeco, Jura are so popular.. Many super automatic machines actually do make really good espresso shots...
As far as the machine breaking down and not being repairable... The folks that buy these types of machines can care less because they have lot of disposable income and they will simply replace the machine with a newer technology model (same with Tesla and BMW buyers). $1700 is pocket change to wealthy people..

LOL.. You do realize that there are tons of great alternatives to FaceTime with the Android world? Samsung, Sony, Google and Motorola all make some super quality built phones that either equal Apple's iPhone or surpasses it and there are plenty of apps that equal Face Time.. As I stated before there are several automatic and super automatic espresso machines that make Cafe quality espresso drinks. Yes, the process can be automated and the result does taste good from a few machines as long as the beans are fresh and the temperature is correct.

I agree with you to a limited extent. I feel #Meraki is a very well-built machine and Tom explained how they continue upgrading parts to metal. I share your concern about water and electronics, but that applies to any/all the machines with complex electronics and sensors. The rotary pump and dual boiler is just awesome. IMHO, "perfection" would be #Meraki without the grinder and without sensors, scales, or electronics, selling for c. $499.

Thanks for your opinion. I don't know for sure, but I think it might have been cheaper for them to just make it a metal box, like most espresso machines. Building the injection moulds for the casing cannot be cheap. But I think they were going for a certain design aesthetic. Oh well, we will see how the product does once it launches. Cheers!

It's only $1100 USA dollars right now!!
It's definitely better than Sage Barista Touch Impress, which I had and returned the same day (too much plastic in the brew group).

@@TomsCoffeeCorner I was just going to ask the same. I have paid as well and I am pretty happy about getting a f*** dual boiler with 2 scales and a nice steam wand for about 1k. I am not sure I'd go for the msrp price, but is there any other dual boiler with that nice of a steam wand and nice grinder for 1k?

My same thoughts. As someone who's budget cannot afford a machine like a rocket appartamento and a good grinder, it's great. There are some small details that makes me doubtful about purchasing it, but for the price it includes almost everything i've been looking for to make an upgrade for my current coffee set up.

no pre-infusion = no Meraki (: this is so basic function, available in definitely cheap machines from China...
comparing pumps is a bit pointless, because it depends on the machine's casing! Decent somehow doesn't have this problem and also has vibrating pumps. Even my Chinese (hibrew h7a, after flow/opv mod) one is really quiet for a rotary pump (ulka ep4). Gaggia has weak machines in my opinion.

I find vibratory pumps louder and more annoying, but you're right that the casing makes a difference.
