      Tip: downshifting is tougher so use double-clutch rev matching to do it. It provides a safety net in case u dont get revs exact

    I havent driven a manual in almost 8 years and I panicked! But watching your videos has given me confidence again as I was able to reverse back and go into forward drive in first gear and that is a massive accomplishment for me lol The only difference with our manual sticks here in New Zealand is our reverse is to the bottom right

    Downshifting doesn't put to much wear to the gearbox it's a normal operating mode, but alows you to save fuel and your brake pads and disks.

    I think I blew a synchro ring on 3rd gear because it grinds very very slightly on most upshifts from 2nd gear to 3rd gear. I also tried double clutching upshifts by going into neutral and releasing the clutch and pressing it again and going into 3rd and it didn't grind. Any tips on caring for my compromised 3rd gear to minimize wear?

    U shouldnt downshift much at highway speeds because of clutch/synchronizer wear, but at 115 km/h or 70 mph for most cars it is really unlikely u'd be redllining 3rd gear (max 130-140 kph). Double-clutching would help

      Pelican Stevenson I ' could ' give you a second by second run down but I don't think there is the need... and I'm not an examiner. in response to others saying you should be an instructor; as I explain... you display a lot of sloppy control of the car. I would be shocked if you'd (the poster) would pass a test with that std therefor I made the comment I did in response to others inferring the stds are something to aspire to. they are not in my view. that of course is only my view... 😊

    I think it does depend on the car though. I did my lessons in a 1.2 Corsa which only had 60hp and it was terrible. I was changing gears between 3000 and 3500 revvs because it was jst soo soo slow. If i chamged earlier than 3000 there was no power at all.

    How do you stop that jolt when downshifting? Say 4th gear to 2nd from an A road to a side road.

    • @lukewarmape603
      @lukewarmape603 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      (Still doing lessons so take that into consideration)
      2 Months late but I found slowing to between 15-20, changing down to 2 while braking and then slowly bringing the clutch up reduces jolting considerably. Might be one of these factors, might be all of them, all I know is that it works for me!

    • @Flowermouth
      @Flowermouth 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Rev matching; blipping the throttle to bring the engine speed up to the road speed so there's no braking forces from your engine to your wheels, causing the jolt.

      A better way to go fast and take advantage of gravity/downhills is by selecting one of the top two gears. Minim engine-brakin

  • @universal_wisdom9381
    @universal_wisdom9381 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When coming to a stop at a light going say.. 30mph can’t you just put it to neutral and apply the brakes accordingly to a complete stop? Or would it be harder to control?

    • @MSM4U2POM
      @MSM4U2POM 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Universal_ Wisdom British driving Instructors are always taught to brake first, then clutch down and stop before applying the handbrake and selecting neutral. That way you keep both hands on the steering wheel during the manoeuvre itself. If you move the gearstick during the manoeuvre, you are complicating things and potentially compromising vehicle control by removing your hands from the wheel, when you should be concentrating on stopping. Hope that helps.

    • @universal_wisdom9381
      @universal_wisdom9381 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      MSM4U2POM Thanks!

    • @leonk6950
      @leonk6950 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Universal_ Wisdom still, when you get better at driving, learn to rev-match and maybe even heel-toe. It's not that heel-toe is in any way mandatory to know, but it does save a bit of fuel to be running in gear when coming to a stop as long as possible, and it WILL save your clutch downshifting. Also, it's extremely good for Ur driving pleasure, as its damn satisfying to get right

    Hi.. i have a small car..., after all car video i watched, i understood that i should not use too much clutch.. so o did my small research in my car that.. my car's 1rst gear idle speed is 8 kmph and 2nd idle speed is 12 kmph...my car doesnt have tackometer, so what i do is, except the traffic roads , bumpy roads, and ascending roads, at the speed of 10 kmph , i use 2nd gear so that i just need 2 kmph clutching to reach at 12 kmph. When i am below 10 kmph, like 9 kmph, i use 1rst gear so that i can only use clutch to just to rev match.. and if i am lower than 8 kmph i can just use the clutch to reach to 8 kmph... i did this way so that i dont have to use clutch and clutch ware decreases..
    But after i watch this video i am confused.. because yu said to only downshift it to first when it stops... or else there will bes a clutch ware.. so am i doing the right thing..??😐😐😐😐😐

      The are no gears on most electric cars. The motors have a high enough power density to drive the car without a gearbox.
      Removing the need for a gearbox can save on weight (at least for consumer cars) and can improve reliability as you have far fewer moving parts to deal with (motor controllers are solid-state electronics anyway) 👍

    High revs aren't bad for a car, even past redline unless your car is still cold.

    dont change gear if you dont need to. if you want to save fuel. for exampel acce in to motorway go on the 3rd gear to the speed and then 6 gear.

      3 to 6?? you will end up forcing your engine, probably even stall if you don't have the right amount of revs built up

      mr Insane You may want to bump that up a bit, particularly with a turbo. You'll actually get a longer lifespan that way as lugging them too much will cause a detonation/timing issue. My 2.Slow non turbo Jetta won't be shifted that low. 3k would be much better. :)

    It would be better if you were able to demonstrate what you're saying then there's a visual back up. Otherwise I don't get what you're saying.
