How slow can you go in each gear? I compare three different manual cars.

  • I drive three different manual cars and demonstrate how slow each car can go in each gear on a flat and uphill. I also explain the difference between the minimum gear speed in both petrol and diesel cars. I demonstrate how you can tell how slow your car will go in each gear using the rev counter without stalling. This video should also help you judge when to change down gears.

      It's because the gear stick goes directly into the gearbox. This is common in cars with longitudinally mounted engines and gearboxes. Front wheel drive cars typically have the gearbox very far from the gear stick and use cables to change gear, so the connection is weak.

    Could you explain what to do when you're in the "dead zone" between 1st and 2nd gear? What I mean is that you're going too slow for 2nd but potentially too fast for 1st as I've heard downshifting into 1st isn't great for the car when already moving.

    • @MrRobbi373

      I have the same problem, my first gear is really hard to change into above 5km/h, but the slowest I can go in second gear ist about 11km/h... So far I just use a lot of clutch, gas and second gear when I am in that dead zone, but that is really slow.

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      That's a good point, I normally put the clutch down if I'm too slow for 2nd and lift it up again once I want to accelerate. Too slow for second is normally less than 10mph so I don't consider this bad coasting. However, avoid crossing a give way line with the clutch down, although this is not always possible (starting down hill at a give way line for example) you want power available as early as possible when you enter traffic flow.

      @vukpsodorov5446 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      my guess would be to double clutch & match revs. that's really the only way a lot of cars would let you shift down to first regardless, and this way you're not harming any parts (if done correctly).

    • @RusNad
      @RusNad 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@1Cee__1884 I think if you give some revs it won't stall usually. Don't know about your car specifically though. It's a bit harder with petrol than diesel in my experience. As someone else said, you could rev match to shift to 1 so you don't get engine braking but I can't do that yet.

    I've found diesels generally have more torque to pull away without accelerator use, but will stall more abruptly at only slightly below idle. The petrol tends to shudder and shake but will spring back to life unless you force it really low. The diesel just cuts out.

    • @ConquerDriving

      The mileage is low compared to the hours! There is a lot of slow driving from beginners and practising reversing. I estimate I've done about 16,000 hours in it and most cars only do 2500 - 7000 hours before they're 15 - 20 years old and sent to a scrap yard. It drives as well as it did when I got it new, I've obviously replaced parts to keep it good. In my experience age affects cars more than mileage, it's 7 years old and a well maintained car can easily last 20 years. I'm not sure how long I'll have it but I have no current plans to change it. I expect to keep it at least another 3 years. Being only 7 years old it's still a modern machine and I enjoy the powerful and economical engine, it feels much faster than the numbers suggest. I also enjoy the "SEAT sound" system I paid extra for. Some of the more expensive systems I've tried aren't as good, I think it's better than the Bose system in the MX5, but it's close.

    I'm asking because I thought that if you go below 1000 revs, you have to press the clutch to prevent stalling (or does this only apply if we are braking)
    Thanks for all your help

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Most cars will only stall if you force it below the minimum speed with the brake. However, there are some cars that will struggle just from being off the gas and letting the revs go to low, but they give you plenty of warning before they stall and allow you time to add a bit of gas. So I am forced to either press the clutch early which feels a bit unsafe or change to 2nd while I am breaking which isn’t much better as I am half focusing on that. Hi interesting watch i am a new driver and have noticed what you are describing for example when i am slowing down in second or 3rd gear and going too slow for the gear. I have noticed the engine tone will slightly change and pull me forward adding a few miles per hour the car seems to pull forward while doing so but after a second or two the vibration will stop either if i put the clutch down or speed up. The car i am driving is a Vauxhall Zafira 1.7 diesel (2011) and honestly i am still adjusting to it as a new driver . So my question is is this perfectly normal for a car to pull forward and vibrate when the car is too slow for a higher gear? Thanks

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unlikely to hurt the engine but it's not a nice way to drive. It's certainly not good to stress the engine like that though but I doubt you will notice much difference in wear. If it's an old engine then it's worse as they're not usually as reliable at low revs.

They seem to lower the view's of my other videos, must be something to do with the algorithm or I'm seeing a false pattern.

I think some instructors try to get home the idea of 1st=10, 2nd=20, 3rd=30 etc rather than doing what I do and what this video does and let them get a feel for what a gear can and can’t do.

      I don’t think it matters too much as long as you’re not going below 1000, depending on the car. And also don’t stay at 3000+ or higher for very long at all. The key is staying at a good RPM whilst changing gear and whilst in gear, so it’s always comfortable and you’re making the most of your gears.

      Petrol:1100/1300-2500rpm
      Diesel:1000-2000rpm
      In most cars

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a very good question and is very car dependant. Generally speaking you want the rpm as low as possible for fuel economy until you feel the car start to struggle. When it struggles you used more fuel. You know when it's struggling because the engine will make a deep sound or you will be pressing the gas pedal a lot without much power. In older cars the best fuel economy was between 1500-2000rpm but with the latest engines - particularly diesels - you can run at very low rpm without hurting efficiency whilst still maintaining good oil and water pressure. Your oil pump and water pump spins with the engine, so the slower your engine speed, the slower the pumps.

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's quite normal, the engines sounds like it's struggling at low rpm with high cylinder pressures. Try pressing the gas more gently.

    Can I go slower than the minimum speed if I hold the clutch for a few seconds and let the clutch go back up without a risk of stalling? For example, when I am on the second gear and the minimum speed is 12 mph and I need to slow down just a bit for two seconds to check the road I am passing by, so I hold the clutch and the car will slow down on its own without braking to 9 mph, can I let the clutch go after this just like that?

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can push the clutch down to allow you to go slower than the gear can handle, then bring the clutch to the bite point when you need to accelerate.

      Most engines idle at a similar level. Most engines are between 750rpm - 900rpm once up to temperature. Gearing makes the bigger difference.

Also, some others are making manual gearboxes available with fully electric cars, for driving enthusiasts who prefer manual driving. Manual all the way!
