  • If the car jerks as you press the clutch down then this video is for you. I explain why the jerk happens, how to make it smooth and the advantages and disadvantages of coming off the gas first or pressing the clutch down first before you change gear.

    To anyone struggling with driving a manual transmission car: Don't worry about speed. Learn to drive the car properly. Speed and smoothlhness will come to you. It may seem overwhelming at first. That's okay, it does to everyone. It will become easy and natural in a short time. Don't beat yourself up. Find a patient teacher who is kind to you. Your dad, who shouts at you is probably not the one.

      I'm struggling. I hope I'll get it right soon. I still struggle with start and stop. If I have to stop somewhere a bit for example. Stopping to pay for parking, the car switches off sometimes.

      @@saviourj1 stopping: try to listen to the car and the revs and just push the clutch earlier. even if too early, it's not that bad and you will eventually figure the timing out. i just wears out the break a bit faster like that.
      starting: a bit more revs make live easier, just don't go too crazy bc otherwise you will burn the clutch. but you should that in case it happens. also remind yourself that you have to take your time releasing the clutch bc dumping the clutch without revs will not result in a fast acceleration but will stall the car.

      @@ConquerDrivingI'm a new learner. It's been 4 months and I am proud to say that I have passed the struggling stage of jerkyness. I drive a 1.4 turbo diesel, and it was tough. I could drive petrol cars really smoothly but my own car started made me depressed. Then I understood the transmission, gear changes, every small thing. And now I am 95% smooth. Still learning new things everyday but I'm feeling my car much better now. Thanks James, you were a great help❤. Love from India.

    You are sent from God honestly. At first I was always scared to do the clutch down first because the revs would rise like crazy, that's because I hadn't payed enough attention to reducing the gas. If you reduce it enough you can execute the movement to perfection. No jerk, no revs going crazy and smooth. You got +1 sub

    OMG THIS VIDEO MADE ME CRY OF HAPPINESS! Finally someone had all the answers that I kept asking around to no avail! I Got my license in November, bought a car this month and I watched all your videos because I was unhappy with my slow shifts, long breaking time and slow set offs. I had 2 driving instructors, I learned only on diesel (the car that I bought, coincidentally is also a diesel). Both teachers taught me to set off with no gas(hence the very slow starts that I had).
    First instructor taught me to press cluch BEFORE every press of the break, fortunately I asked the second one and he was mortified by that and we fixed it but he did not notice it at all in the span of 3 two hour sesions and he had dual command...
    Both teachers taught me to go off gas before clutch, both diesels acted like the FIat in this video and I would get the revs up to even 3000 sometimes to shift in third and by the end of my gear shift the cars were around 800-1000 revs, screaming for 2nd or a lot of gas again. I was so fed up with changing gears, I only sat in 2nd and sometimes 3rd because of the tediousness of dealing with the engine breaking. I know this can be mitigated to a certain degree with faster shifts or more gas, first option is hard to achieve in a short timespan as a beginner and the second one it still makes my shifts longer than the usual and more complicated. On that note, I feel like the diesels that I drove were kinda fussy, the Seat in the videos had almost no engine breaking, while mine clearly had a lot of it going on like the Fiat, so even if I got faster I don't think I could've gotten smoother by much.
    GOD knows how I got my license on my first try (I don't feel like I fit properly in the flow of the traffic and I am working on it by going out at hours when there is less traffic) and GOD KNOWS how those instructors had succesfull pupils that would become okay drivers!
    It's crazy when you think about it, you can't really know when or if you are doing something wrong, you trust a qualified person and you think he taught you how to drive "the proper way" I will probably (hopefully) become a better driver because I thought: "Wait this feels wrong, janky and I don't think I can get much faster and better with this way of driving" so I started searching for answers and found this AMAZING CHANNEL but other people don't do that, they just get faster at a bad tehnique that can't get you very far, I wonder what do those people do when time passes?! (No wonder I hear a lot of stories of how I'm terrified to go with X in the same car and they have 10-15 years of everyday driving, oh well "blessed are the ignorant"), it's such a sad thought to have.
    I will start using the cluch and release gas afterwards method from now on. I am very serios when I say THANK YOU SO SO VERY MUCH!

    Dude.... i feel so stupid now... thank you for the explanation. It suddenly clicked.
    I just couldnt get my head around why i often need to give gas when getting onto the car park with my punto. I thought i have to go a bit faster because the clutch acts up when the car is super slow in 1st gear as the car is slowing down and the clutch disengages while there is load on it, but actually what happens is:
    Im super slow rolling over the predestrian walk and leaving it in 1st gear while rolling in. At this point the engine is at about 1000 - 1200 rpm and because im always so focused at what is happening around me, i subcontiously slowly push the clutch down the way you showed it here. Something i never do anywhere else, except in our car park, as everything is narrow and im too focused on people possibly jumping out in front of me. This instinctive kind of slowly moving and preparing to jump to precise movements if necessary, wich to be honest did save me quite a few times from accidents.
    Thing is at that low rpm it is giving a little bit of gas on its own, even though im off the gas pedal. And now that im thinking about it, it only ever happens when im below 1500 rpm, wich is the point where my punto starts giving its idle gas. And thinking about the times it didnt hapen, i was relaxed and pressed the clutch swiftly...
    After 13 years of daily driving, i just now realized that i sometimes, out of lack of concentration, press the clutch too slowly at creeping speeds.
    I need to actively try it out tomorrow and see how it responds at that slow speed if i just push the clutch down normaly as if i was driving and shifting gears!

    Excellent video - really clear explanation. Thanks for taking the time to make it!
    Rough upshifts are a common thing that I definitely notice when I'm a passenger. They show up worst when the driver is accelerating briskly. The usual cause is an almost instant transition from hard acceleration (throttle wide open) to slight deceleration (clutch down during shift). This stage can feel pretty rough even if the subsequent gear change is properly rev-matched. (This is a slightly different problem than the one Richard discusses in the video, but the techniques to solve it are related.)
    I think that really smooth upshifts under firm acceleration require something like this procedure, which Richard demonstrates:
    - reduce gas SMOOTHLY to steady speed position, then immediately
    - clutch down quickly, then immediately
    - rev-matched shift (either off gas then blip, or well-judged trailing throttle) and re-engage clutch
    - increase gas SMOOTHLY to continue accelerating
    "Smoothly" doesn't have to mean "slowly", but it can't be done in an instant: if you're accelerating hard in second gear with throttle wide open and press the clutch down, the sudden disappearance of the acceleration will be unpleasant. (It's worse for your passengers, who don't have a steering wheel to brace themselves with!)

    Just wanted to pitch in and say the "beginner" method (off the accelerator first, then clutch in) may be the preferred way in some vehicles due to emissions. I have a 2001 Honda Civic and there is a bit of rev-hang (RPMs stay high for a brief moment despite being off the gas). Sudden changes in load may cause incomplete burns, so some fuel injected vehicles have a bit of rev hang to smooth the transition from loaded to unloaded to mitigate incomplete/rich burns and improve emissions. I find the smoothest shifts are an intentional brief period of off gas coast (just enough to avoid the rev hang), then clutch in with quick change to rev match.

    Thanks so much dude. You're the first person to mention the clutch down, then gas off method. Out of frustration I started doing this technique, because every attempt to let off the gas, then clutch in would result in an engine brake and weird thunk feeling which I'm pretty sure ain't great for my transmission. I was worried I was damaging my clutch but eventually made a decision to sacrifice my clutch over my transmission. Literally every other video says to clutch in after letting off the gas and my car just wasn't having any of it from 1st to 2nd. Also traffic behind me hated me because of the slowdown in between 1st and 2nd. Now I know that this is normal and I don't have to worry anymore!

It is easy to make a mistake. But with the gas off you can't make a mistake.Also I feel that method which is close to clutch in-gas off at the same time,is more fluidy, more natural

Mini cooper r56 d 1.5 it's having a really sporty flying wheel with it make the revs fall down really fast. instead of an upshift blip, i let the engine revs flare up a little bit (only 100-200rpm) as i let the clutch out.. this buys me extra time to move the stick, I think this is easier than letting the revs drop to idle and then blipping back up again, but everyone does have their own techniques.
    Also, I think I finally understand why I kept getting the clunk in your car when learning to change gear, power still there (despite off gas, takes a bit of time to go away) as i push the clutch down, with the clutch re-engaging as I push it down. I guess every car has a different degree of 'gas lag'

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's very true Michael. I remember. Letting the revs flare a bit is essentially the same as a throttle blip. The key is to have the revs high but falling without power as you lift the clutch up, that makes it easy for the clutch and smooth.

  • @clover7359
    @clover7359 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This can be heavily simpliflied:
    1. Stomp the clutch pedal to the floor rapidly.
    2. (If older engine without rev hang) Stomp the clutch a split second before fully releasing the accelerator.
    3. (If newer engine with rev hang) Stomp the clutch a split second after fully releasing the accelerator.

    This is really helpful thank you 🙂 I think my little 2003 daewoo goes like the vauxhall. Im just learning to drive and am finding changing from first to second, and sometimes to third, quite hard because the car slows way down the moment i take my foot off the gas. Its really confusing bc it feels like i have to give it more gas to change into 2nd so they dont drop too much. Now im trying to find where i can shift to 2nd but its so hard. I wish i could do the gas off clutch in method. I wanna try the blip - i think i’ve might’ve done that a couple of times accidentally 🤣

  • @artemkatelnytskyi
    @artemkatelnytskyi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You're going in-depth and beyond, good job!
    You have talked a lot about methods how to link a gearbox and an engine after upshifting, like for example coming off the clutch, adding gas then coming off the clutch, or blipping the throttle.
    There is another method, which is used by an advanced motorist, in fact he is from the UK too and has a TH-cam channel.
    His method of upshifting is to not come off the gas completely, so that your RPMs don't fall lower than the revs in the next gear.
    E.g. He would press the gas 25% to get the car up to speed; clutch in, release gas to 15%, so he is in correct revs by the time he releases the clutch.
    Is it a valid method? What do you think of it? Have you used it? And what are its pros and cons?
    Thanks a lot for going through this comment in advance.
    I can link his video if you want.

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you, yes you're welcome to link to as many videos as you like. His method is another method I use, the only trouble with it is it's hard for new drivers to do this without over revving the engine and you have to hold the clutch at the bite point for longer as the clutch has more work to rev match whilst there is power coming from the engine. When you're off the gas and the revs are falling the clutch finds it easy to rev match, as long as the revs are still higher than needed when you lift the clutch. This is why I like the throttle blip method. I use the method you mention in my VX220 at low speeds as it seems to work well in that. But the throttle blip works best at higher speeds.

      You're welcome, press the brake to slow down, make sure the clutch is down when the revs drop to around 1000rpm. If you slow to less than 5mph select first then use the gas and clutch to continue. If you slow to between 5 and 15mph you can use second gear and lift the clutch up slowly adding gas to accelerate as required.
