    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Buttermaker (Walter Matthau) tries to coach his team of misfits during their first practice.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
The success this underdog comedy from director Michael Ritchie almost single-handedly spawned the kids' sports film boom of the 1980s and '90s. When beer-breathed ex-minor-league ball player and professional pool cleaner Morris Buttermaker (Walter Matthau) agrees to coach a little league team in the San Fernando Valley, he soon finds he's in over his head, having inherited an assortment of pint-sized peons and talentless losers. They play well-organized teams and lose by tremendous margins, and the parents threaten to disband the Bears to save the kids (and themselves) any further embarrassment. Buttermaker refuses, though, and brings in a pair of ringers: Amanda (Tatum O'Neal), his ex-girlfriend's tomboy daughter, and Kelly (Jackie Earle Haley), a cigarette-smoking delinquent who happens to be a gifted athlete. With their help, the Bears manage to change their losing ways and qualify for the championship, where they face their arch-rivals, the Yankees.
    CREDITS:
    TM & © Paramount (1976)
Cast: Walter Matthau, Chris Barnes, Gary Lee Cavagnaro, Alfred Lutter III
    Director: Michael Ritchie
    Producer: Stanley R. Jaffe

was a kid when this came out, and yes, this is what childhood in the 70s was like. Out all day, no parents, GenX kids free-ranged and were pretty tough like these kids. Yes the language is rough but it was back then even frowned upon but people were flawed in different ways and you dealt with their issues like they did here w Tanner. The point is we were able to laugh at the shock value of such language, and poke fun at ourselves in the process. We never took ourselves too seriously, and just had fun. This movie is a time machine, GenX probably had one of the best experiences through childhood in the 70s, teens in the 80s, then young adults in 90s before the world got scarier on 9/11. GenX is the smallest of all the generations, but we are the tightest because of the slice of America we got to experience when things were different. i wouldn't change it for the world.

I remember seeing parts of this movie in the late 70's in the school library. Some kid had parts of it on tape. I cannot remember the format. It was not VHS. At first what I heard of it was harsh for the language. A few years later I rented a VCR and the VHS tape of it. Buying the units and tapes were way to expensive when they first came out to buy. I really enjoyed the movie a lot. Walter Matthau and the kids were all great. I could relate to the families not as involved and the one that were over the top. I played little league and would probably have been a Bears style kid. I sure had my good days though. A few home runs, some great catches, and good other plays. A few times on a line drive my glove was just out at the right time. The ball went directly in the glove, did not know I caught it. However I got a lot of praise from both teams for the play, before I figured out what happened. However, I was also the one at times the ball just did not go forward when I threw and the hat fell in my eye or the sun in my eyes. A few days ago watched the newer one and it was good, just not as good as this one. My opinion only. I just love Walter Matthau as an actor in most of everything he did. Grumpy OLD Men and Grumpier Old men were other great movies of his.

What an awesome scene. Our hyper-PC society would go into a spastic fit of convulsions halfway through it today.

wish we could just enjoy it without bringing politics into it. i mean e do live in a time where videos show girls slapping each others asses to music. times changed but changed to sexuality being ok instead of other social topics.

Yeah I had a good coach he had played PRO for 8 years or so he was a good teacher, very professional and real good about how he treated the kids, hey he was a pro baseball player so he new how to act....this movie does a good job of showing parents who just drop their kids off at little league and then run or notice that their kids ain't into baseball....and they suck and sit the bench and never get any chance to shine...that blows right Tanner...yep...if I wasn't getting any where with a sport my mom was on top of that stuff if u really didn't or couldn't do it then u when and tryed some other sport there was plenty....luckily.....thanks for the memories....

Yeah I love this movie back in those days if u had good self confidence this stuff didn't get under ur skin hey we needed a good cleaning up but its great to hear the dialog in this movie the theater would be empty in about ten minutes, kids talking like this, defiantly not PG. 1976 fortunately the kids didn't talk like this when I played farm league, below little league but the parents some of them did talk like the kids....but not to often for the most part kids were learning baseball and were focused so the parents all of them were happy their kids learning and playing baseball we had a lot of kids on baseball fields all over town....we were to busy to complain it was cool.
