My mother died recently. She suffered from advanced dementia. She would stare at the walls for hours, and most days not even know who I was. But whenever I put this movie on, it was if a veil had been lifted. She came back to life, and would talk about every scene and laugh. It’s really profound to think about the impact that movies can have on our lives sometimes. Uncle Buck gave me my mother back, if only for a little while.

You know watching scenes from this film and seeing Candy deliver some of his more somber, serious lines makes me feel even more sad he died so young. Before the slapstick punchout he plays a responsible guardian confronting an intoxicated person with no business around the children in his care so well it reminds me that his attempts to crossover into truly showcasing his dramatic acting skills were cut short.
