This version of KARR was more menacing than season 1. I love Peter as a voice actor but Paul brought so much more layering to KARR.

@@KmT81 in the episode he wanted it done to look less like Kitt. I liked the gray and the yellow scanner bar, it added a bit of flare while staying classy.
It still gives me the chills when KARR imitates John's voice and says "he couldn't make it". Very well done.
Agreed I like the shot of the wing the girl waking to it. Triggered my claustrophobia as the door slammed. J7st twisted how he taunts the girl imitating his voice.

Heh, I bet KARR quickly reconsidered "explody human" after realizing what a mess it would make inside of him. Heat exhaustion is much less messy and easier to eject.
One can't help but wonder if a writer thought of that as a joke.
Technically she would just expand into a huge bloody mess it's like putting stretch Armstrong into the vacuum chamber but instead of liquids and fats start coming out instead of it popping!
KARR should know that explody humans is a hollywood invention that has zero merit, as out skin suit is designed to withstand significantly larger changes in pressure. For instance, at sea level we experience 1 atmosphere of pressure. Vacuum is 0 atmospheres. This is a change of 1 atmosphere of pressure - something people routinely experience when they go swimming, as that's equivalent of diving 10m under water. You can certainly feel it, but you're not going to implode just as you're not going to explode in reverse.
Of course if KARR is able to instantly remove an atmosphere, causing an explosive decompression, that's a different story - but he only had a couple of small vents to work with. A more viable threat would be to begin raising the pressure inside the cabin to be honest.
The part where he says ‘fraid he couldn’t make it’ and she starts screaming genuinely gave me chills when I was about 11.

Loved how when KARR drove out all Micheal had to say was "KITT!" and KITT came running!
This was a great way to enhance KARR's character making him vengeful after what happened in Season 1's Trust Doesn't Rust. Also, I love the two tone paint job with the metallic trim.

@@downix I never even thought of it that way but it's entirely possible yes! And it didn't work out for reasons that are pretty obvious:. Garth Knight and KARR are both "programmed" for self preservation so they simply would not have been able to work together for very long. I'll let you write that missing prequel 👍

I always felt bad for KARR...
But I wish they would’ve brought him back again? Why did they show his CPU blinking and then not to bring him back again.? And Knight Rider really never had a true ending?
@@Thomas-ss5jz Hasselhoff said when he found out they weren't getting a 5th season, Scent of the Roses should have been the last episode. According to him. It was an excellent quality series that could have easily gone for 5 yrs- imo

KARR was a great villain. When he lured Mandy into him with the tinted windows and using John's voice, great scene. I always wanted to see Garthe Knight team up with KARR...pure evil!

Even though I love Peter Cullen(the original Optimus Prime) on his performance back in trust doesn't rust I think I like Paul frees performance as the evil prototype just a little bit more here as he knocked it out of the park.
For those who don't know who Paul frees is his best known role is the voice of Boris badenov from Rocky and Bullwinkle.
As k a r r he is absolutely menacing and sinister.
He's also the voice of Disney's Haunted Mansion in the theme parks.
Paul Frees kind of went with a more Darth Vader like persona as the voice of KARR.
I just realised that is epic cool.
It's purely a matter of preference, I know, but I've gone on record before saying that I really prefer the Trust Doesn't Rust version of KARR (except aesthetically...I definitely prefer the yellow scanner). There's just something so purely sci-fi (in a way that you don't normally get from shows like this) about the idea that KARR is the way he is because he was programmed for self-preservation before anything else. He's not actually evil, but _appears_ to be because of his fundamental programming. This version comes across more as sci-fantasy (which is fine, of course). There's just something more engaging about Cullen's version for me.
Agreed. I love Cullen, but man, Frees made KARR truly sound malevolent.

Compared to "Trust Doesn't Rust", in "KITT vs KARR" - KARR was WAY more sinister. KARR was also basically the only "bad guy" in the episode. The young couple that found him were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Super cool episode.
The first episode KARR was kinda ignorant to the ways of the world but the second episode it was like he had 2 years to sit and think about it and was not going to let them get away with it.
This is the best episode of the whole series.

i don't think that its a different car, look at the wheels, they keep the same position. im just guessing theat the weight of the girl has been added or something
@@teethendrikson Or probably just simply where they couldn't quite keep KARR still after filming the first half while they removed the tint on his windows to film the second half. And also cuz Mandy's moving about in the car struggling.
It got lower after the girl was placed in the car. The windows were more than likely covered for the first shot then after they removed it they put Mandy in there and the added weight brought the car down just a little.
Also there was no second car for KARR that would have matched this one. There were two cars used as KARR, this one which was a manual transmission car and the one from the opening beach scene that was actually the car used as Kitt with the high traction drop downs. If you look you can see the elevated stance KARR had when they drove him out of the sand. If I had done this scene and wanted it to look seamless I would have used wooden blocks for the body of the car to sit on so when the actress got in after the cut away the car wouldn't have moved an inch.
"You wanted to desert me, abandon me like those people from that pompous foundation. How about I slowly remove the air from the passenger compartment? Have you ever seen someone explode in a vacuum?" He took everything so personal. 😂

I remember this episode suddenly! I liked the big fight near the end and KARR made a terrible mistake by shooting at KITT with a laser. KITT put up its protective shield just in the nick of time and deflected it. It hit KARR, damaging it so badly that KITT was able to finish it off.
Look at how the window almost gives way at 3:46. So much for KITT's molecular bonded shell lol!

I've always thought a blue scanner would have meshed better with the 2tone paint job and blacked out windows and wheels of KARR

I always wondered how they made the car drive by themselves while filming.
When you see a scene with KITT driving itself, look carefully at the driver side seat - the cushion looks a little different, and likely houses a person inside so they can make it appear that KITT is driving itself.

The car did drive by itself. KITT is the most advanced artificial intelligence out there.
Two answers below were right but those werent all of them. They did start out with a hidden driving position in the drivers seat, you can tell if you look at the seat. It will look bigger than the other and normally has a cover on the back that matched the upholstery. You would see it drive to Michael but he would never sit in it without a jump cut. They did have a passenger side driving car which was used also. This one would drive itself but you would see Michael get in and drive off without and cuts. The third was used with a tow rig. These were seen while looking from the front of KITT while driving down the road. It would just follow the tow vehicle so Michael could do whatever he needed to do in the scene.

Karr"s voice sounds just like Darth Vader and monstrous like him.
It's Paul Frees -- a voice actor with a list of credits that would resemble Santa's Naughty and Nice lists put together. He is probably best known as the voice of Boris Badenov in The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show, and as the "Ghost Host" narrator of the Haunted Mansion attraction at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. The voice he uses as KARR is similar to his Ghost Host voice.
I think Paul Frees sort of based KARR's voice on Darth Vader.

At 0:55, why did Michael have to call for K.I.T.T. before K.I.T.T. intervened? K.I.T.T. should have known that Michael was in trouble from sensor readings.
Maybe that's why Michael had to call for Kitt, Kitt had started the start up sequence, 4 lamps on the top of the voicebox, 5 pairs of lamps down the side of the voicebox. Then the auto cruise function, then the gear shifter. It takes too long.
Then Michael calls him and off he goes. 10 seconds too late. And Michael is dead.

Michael probably turned off KITT's surveillance mode so that they wouldn't be detected easily by KARR like he did earlier in the episode.

It’s been years (probably decades) since I have seen any of these episodes. When I was 10 I never notice Mandy was “trapped” in a car with the windows down. Look around the3:25 point.

I like KARR’s two tone paint. I always wondered why the foundation didn’t re-program KARR with the same program as KITT, since other than “personality” they are identical.
They planned on getting back to KARR but the owner of the Knight foundation died and him and Devan never got the chance before the crooks found him and reactivated him Devan explained that to Micheal in Trust Doesn’t Rust Devan said he forgot all about KARR and he felt bad he never got a chance to fix him

However I really struggle with the idea that they completely built KITT from the ground up with all the materials they learned from KARR and yet “forgot about it.” I know they needed to do that for the plot but it seems pretty implausible in actuality. But then I suppose a talking self driving car that can jump over freight trains and smash through brick walls is also implausible. 😂

1:04 It's because of that particular shot I wonder when they actually decided to redesign KITT's dash and consoles in Season 3. Cuz throughout "KITT vs KARR", the Hoff is clearly driving the car with the old dash as you can see the Season 2 overhead console instead of the new one. Plus despite airing a few episodes into Season 3, it was actually the first to be filmed ("Knight of the Drones" was filmed later). So I therefore wonder if KITT's dash upgrade came along after they'd started the season, making 1:04 a late shoot. Or if they just used the Season 2 car to save time switching between KITT and KARR for interior shots. And the Season 3 car was only used when needed.

I actually thought it was great attention to detail and continuity that KARR had the season 1 dash and KITT the season 3 dash, they clearly used the Season 1/2 "Hero" car to film the interior scenes for KARR. Never noticed they also used it to film scenes with KITT... Guess the continuity thing was more of a coincidence then... 😅
KITT Vs KARR was shot first, so there were still a lot of stuff that hadn't been finalized by the time of when they shot Knight of the Drones
@@xtremer_daredevil5950 Yes I watched Knight Rider Historians commentary video on this episode. And learned they were working on the new hero car and therefore used the old hero car for both KITT and KARR. This explains why the new dash at 1:04 looks unfinished as the displays around KITT's voice box are missing their labels. Then a couple episodes in, they stripped out the dash in the old hero car so it could become the right hand blind drive car. While the old dash got moved to the left hand blind drive car.
KARR is voiced by Paul Frees here, in one of his last voiceover roles before his death

The voice of KARR in this episode was Paul Freese since KARR'S original voice, the mythical Peter Cullen, was still dubbing the mythical robotic hero Optimus Prime.
My favourite show love kitt!
I heard years ago that Peter Cullen didn't want to reprise his role as KARR in this episode because KARR ended up being more evil and manipulative than how he played KARR in season 1.
