- This is the Version 2.0 of the Arduino Homework Writing Machine - 2D CNC Plotter. this version comes with a lot of upgrades from the previous one, which includes improved pen lifting mechanism, clip type pen holder for easy attachment and removal of any kind of pen, tilt mechanism to set the pen at any angle, added rubber feet for stability and improved tolerances on the 3d printed parts.
this machine can be used with any pen, pencil, or other drawing tool to write on a paper or any notebook for works such as homework, drawing, sketching, caligraphy, art, etc.
It uses an arduino and a CNC shield V3.0, with stepper motors and stepper motor drivers to enable the movement in x and y direction. i have used aluimnium profiles and 3d printed plates for the machine structure. rubber feets are added for stability on smooth surfaces. i have used belts and pulleys for linear motion from the motors to the plates. for power supply i have used a 12v 2A power adapter. after powering the machine, connect it to a computer and use universal gcode sender software to send the gcodes to the machine. you can take any text or image file in inkscape and convert it into a gcode in very few and simple steps. once the gcode is ready, open it in the universal gcode sender, connect the COM port of the arduino and you can start executing the file. you can also change the speed and acceleration of the machine in the firmware settings menu under the machine tab of the universal gcode sender software.

It is very cool how the micro controller works right out of the box with out any programing. And even cooler still how the things draws what you are thinking without any divine intervention.
30 Years ago, when i was young, such machines where unaffordable in the price range of some thousand dollars. What a time to be alive. :)
people has been bulding this 20 years as a home dyi projects. Yes, steppers and drivers wasnt as much cheap as today, but still hardly unaffordable.

Agreed. So many cool things. 3-D prints. Door-to-door delivery. Microcontrollers cheaper than potatoes. But most of all, COPY/PASTE someone else's work. :)
That came out very well. Would be great for drawing with etch resist on copper clad pcb.

This update is brilliant thank you. I made the original plotter (thank you for sharing) but the pen holder was a pain in the butt. This looks so much better!! awesome job man! Also can you make a laser engraver version .. would love to see that.

Thanks for the video. I built my brother's old robot, but for some reason the carriage doesn't move. The holder with the marker only puts dots in one place. Did you have this problem?

you're welcome. i got the smooth rod using a 3mm stainless steel shaft. if you cannot find one, you can cut it from something which has a 3mm SS shaft, such as a bbq Skewer. video to operate the machine coming soon. thanks!

yes you can expand the size. i would recommend to not go beyond A2, as you will have to balance the weight of the X axis motor and the aluminium profile. also the belts tend to loosen more often on longer lengths. thank you

Sure you can. Simply 3d print the files, and then assemble from parts from your printers that you no longer use.
I built the plotter according to the instructions in the first version. But I still can't get it to work. I would really need a detailed step-by-step guide on how to revive the plotter after connecting the arduino to the computer. I only know generate G-code in Inscape.
Check out eggbot instructions. Depending of which electronics you have Clone/original the Pins are different. Sometimes you need a capacitor (detach during flashing Firmware/Code) for the Servo arm, sometimes you need to bridge pins
I build it also, like it a lot! Cannot get Inkscape to create Gcode (GCode tools) get script errors. Would like to get some instructions on that. Also having problems with arduino losing connection. Changed USB cable added ferrit rings to the steppers, keeps resetting. To plot .SVG's i tryed GBRL plotter, that works fine, but also losing connection resulting in plot job stopping. What could be the problem with the arduino?

I put mine together but the steppers won't move. They buzz but they don't fully rotate. I ended up burning the stepper drivers somehow. So until I get a few replacement parts delivered I am unable to figure out the issue.
When placing the drivers check twice where gnd pin is. Check documentation of drivers and the cnc shield to find the best possible resolution (1/8 1/16 1/32). Make sure the power source is minimum 12V2A, I had similar issues with Sound&No movement when the power source was too weak
@@mikelabruna9976 check wich cable pairs belong to eacgh other. I did have 2 steppers both where different, als having the effect of a buzzing stepper.
How to invert the x axis direction
simply remove the motor wire, invert it, and plug it back into the board, to invert the direction

used 4988 drivers just have to put 3 jumpers on cnc board and adjust 250 to 80 in the grbl settings for x and y

Two ways to make it even better.
When you use the eccentric nut at 1:50 you have to use eccentric nut on the other side into the same screw. The screw has to be able to move within eccentic nuts from both sides not only on one plate.
Can you combine the stepper motor plate with the big plate? Why use extra screws to secure it and take some more space?

Just leave out the opposite plate, or buy a finished aluminium xy gantry plate, they are cheap af

i have the CAD files available at a very cheap price. you can download the files and get them 3d printed from a local 3d printing service. check the BOM list or the video description for the link for files.

I thought about making one of these then thought, why not just use my literal desktop inkjet printer. Still seems like a fun project though.
Because this simulates drawing. Inkjet printers have pixels.
you can use this on any paper, such as drawing book, assignment notebook, large sized drawing sheet, or even a whiteboard, which cannot be inserted into a desktop printer

This project begs for belt tensioner, must have in version 3!
not necessary. i use this method to adjust belt tension. when inserting the belt, keep the idler pulley plate loose. once belt is fixed, the pulley plate can be pulled to increase tension in the belt, and then tighten the pulley plate.

Slowly getting there, the biggest thing that was wrong was the current setting on the drivers so I dropped it right down, added jumpers for micro stepping, installed grbl1.1f, calculated steps, increased speeds, now I just need to work out Z and import drawing.
I got there in the end, found a suitable version of grbl with servo controller instead of spindle, changed a couple of other settings in firmware and now up and running, I look forward to see how you did it in case I missed something

M5 Nyloc nut (Qty: 9) // Says 4 on BOM
M5 flat washer (Qty: 7)
M5 30mm screw (Qty: 5) // 2 for X and Y pulley plate; 3 for pen plate
M5 Aluminum Spacer (Qty: 9)
6 Extra M4 screws for arduino plate ~12 - 20mm ? // Not entirely sure
Zip ties
I recommend getting SOCKET CAP SCREWS, especially for the parts that are locked with nyloc nuts, they are less prone to stripping and make it easier to fasten

Your parts list wasn't very clear or complete. I thought I had gotten everything that I needed but there seems to parts missing. I am following your videos but I clearly don't have the same screws and spacers.
