How to use Writing Machine - 2D Pen Plotter Setup and Use

- Hi friends, this is the long awaited video in which i have explained how to use the writing machine aka 2D Plotter i have made in the previous video.
i have explained everything you need to know to operate the machine. from firmware upload, software to use the machine, and software in which you can create text or graphics to plot on the 2d plotter.

the machine uses GRBL firmware which can be uploaded through the arduino IDE.
NOTE: the servo motor requires a modified version of the GRBL code. it will not work with the standard GRBL available online. i have modified the GRBL to work with the servo, you can download it from the link below.

once GRBL firmware is uploaded, you can operate the machine using Universal Gcode Sender. using UGS, you can run gcode files on the machine, send gcode commands, or even manually control the machine using the jog controller.
finally i explain how to create gcode files using inkscape. you will need to add additional plugins to inkscape in order to enable gcode generation.

Great project, I’ve been using my one for about a week now and that’s pretty much how I have been using my one but good to have a ready made grbl file (that was half my battle). I’ve done a couple of small mods which include, making the rail holes smaller of the lifter and drilling out with a 1/8 bit after it has printed, added washers at end of springs, put a hole on the front side of the gripper so screw is easy to adjust and lastly added 2 springs side by side on the gripper so it holder some smoother pens.
question - I want to modify grbl1.1, same as you did for 0.9. can you share the list of changes you did for 0.9 to support the servo (or at least a link to where I can find the instructions? thanks!!

please help me fix this issue , following your tutorial ,im using cnc shield v3 and arduino uno r3 , i have uploaded the grbl 9 firmware and the machine gets detected is ugs too , when i try to move the servo or run the motors using jogger it dosent work .

How do you do the wiring for the power supply to cnc shield?
how do you use it on a 20x30 in. paper size? is it only for small paper sizes like A3 or notebooks?
Can you tell me what I need to do so when I home my machine the pen (servo) moves up and not drop down and drag along the work surface? Whenever I run the home command (I have homing switches installed for X and Y only) the servo lowers and the pend ends up dragging across my work surface and it ruins my job. Thanks!

Ciao, the Mac version of Inkscape does not have the extensions folder. I create the folder, put the files inside but it does not work. I can't create the Gcode, there's another way to do it? grazie Simone

no need to modify any values. just make sure max travel distance is set to your machine axis travel length. thank you for your appreciation

I have my plotter up and running but have the issue of Inkscape creating gcode that makes whatever drawing I want plot twice. Any idea what is happening?
We need a way to print the text sequentially, and not in fragments, so that different languages work. The font was handwritten so that the course could be printed out in a reasonable amount of time.

we can write using our own handwriting, each person has different handwriting we can write in different handwriting or just using font alone

Hello, I did everything according to your video. The programs work, the X and Y motors rotate correctly. But the servo is activated only once when starting work. Manually, when I write m03 s250 or m03 s90, the servo goes to the same position and does not move until restart. What could be wrong, what settings affect the server?
I found the answer myself. The team with my servo can't have a need for more than 90. this is m03 s90
how did you make it work on 5000 feed rate? my steppers are releasing star wars gun sounds, when I change rate to 320 they work just fine but the way to the sketch is endless.

I have created a larger format machine but I am getting an Inkscape error when I try to generate gcode files with large document size. Standard page size works fine.
when you open Inkscape -1 goto FILE ,2 sselect Document properities 3, now change the page width and height to match what you need.........also look over all of the available selections and change to what you need.

I have uploaded GRBL to my Arduino Uno board and setup UGS. I can connect and move the servo up and down but the stepper motors aren't responding at all. X or Y. Any ideas?
have you added microstepping jumpers on the CNC shield under the motor drivers? also you need to configure steps per mm, or x y feedrate, in UGS firmware configuration
@@SuperbTech I have not added micro stepping jumpers under the motor drivers am I supposed to? UPDATE: I got the motors to work correctly now, it was a bad board. I got a new one. How do I go about enable homing limit switches which I installed? Do I need to make edits to GRBL and reupload as well as edits in UGS? Thanks!

@@IsmaelPR32 bro i need your help . my motors and servo both arent working , ive tried to move the motors using jogger and servo using console dosent work but ugs detects the machine just fine , it shows idle . regarding the jumpers , i dont have jumper caps so i soldered them from below the board , should do just fine , but now how do i get the motors to work?

I do. I tried using different power sources, new servos, rewiring and isolating lines. Nothings worked unfortunately. Servos are just pieces of shit
