  • With a goal to become a Winter Adirondack 46er, Mike and friends climb Phelps Mountain and Table Top Mountain, two Adirondack High Peaks, on a February afternoon. Starting from the Adirondack Loj and High Peaks Information Center, the group traveled along the Van Hoevenberg trail past Marcy Dam to the summit of Phelps Mountain. The group then picked up the trail-less route to the summit of Table Top Mountain. The group made a quick side trip to Indian Falls.

Winter is IMO the best time to climb the High Peaks. You avoid the mud, bugs, bears, and crowds. Phelps and Table Top were my first two High Peaks, now that I am a 46er, I am trying to become a Winter 46er. These two summits are 24 & 25 towards my Winter 46er.

I am going to climb phelps next week and have a question. Did u need a permit to go? A few friends of mine said we will need one but can't find anything online. Cheers and thanks for the video!

@@Tunathegr8 You do not need a permit to climb any of the High Peaks in the Adirondacks. However, the trailhead to Phelps is at the Adirondack Loj. You need to pay for parking there. If you are going on a weekend, be sure to get there early, the lots fill up quick.

No view but beautiful forest! I cannot wait to get out to some mountains, from London UK it's a long way though unfortunately!

It is absolutely beautiful. I love the contrast of white and dark. I did 3 day hikes and 6 peaks, 2 of the days we were kind of socked in, but the final day was amazingly clear.. Stay tuned! You have some BIG mountains a little south and east of you!

I had to pick up Tabletop last Fall so to make it interesting we did Phelps first (2nd time for me) but we did it the back way via the Klondike trail. Might be tough in the winter as I don't think too many people know about it so it could be hard to find.

It was nice to get back to Phelps and Table Top. They were my first 46ers and what got me started (re-started) in the outdoors. Even though we did not have any views, the day was wonderful. Loved sharing the hike with some new friends.

Oh man I got a bit lost trying to find that trail, ended up skiing off and into the marcy dam truck trail.

Great job Mike! Another great video. How long did it take you all together? Looking to head that way on the 21st and 22nd.

RT was 12.56 miles (4620' elevation), we hiked it in 7:40. I would say it was a steady, moderate pace.

I am, it is the perfect size for winter day hikes and some light summer overnights. I had a 0 degree sleeping bag, tarp, shell, extra hat and gloves, small stove, 10 essentials, and food in it for this hike. Two loops for an ice axe and trekking poles are nice. I have had it for several years and have been very happy. I did a review on it at th-cam.com/video/oz981j9Fyd8/w-d-xo.html

Glad to hear that because I just picked one up myself. On the latest version they finally increased the hip belt pocket size.

Same reason, mainly to use as a winter daypack.
