@@pancakes8670 "Ignorance" comes from Latin by way of French, meaning basically "not knowing." Yes, sometimes people think it has something like the meaning you ascribe to it, but in general it just means _not knowing_ something (as opposed to having had a chance to learn and not having taken it).
We're all ignorant when it comes to everything we don't know. Ignorance isn't the problem, _willful_ ignorance (i.e. choosing to continue not knowing) is the problem.

Precisely! I'm safer if my neighbors' kids get a quality education and keep out of trouble. It's pretty simple. 🤷‍♀️
Same thing with social security and health care. If we are all healthy, educated and more secure, regardless of background, then people don't have to turn to crime to survive as much. And then the whole of society is safer as a result.

The easy answer to people who don't think they should pay school taxes is: "Do you use any educated professionals for anything? Do you have a doctor? A lawyer? An accountant? Have you ever had your plumbing fixed by someone? Do you read or watch any sort of journalism? Do you read books (haha, I know the answer to that is no, but still) or watch films and TV series? Do you ever fly anywhere? Do you drive a car that you built, or that you trust was built properly by other people? Do you expect buildings and bridges to be structurally sound? All those people that you rely on for each of these things, would you like to eliminate those from your life, or do you think they shouldn't be educated before they perform a service? Or maybe you benefit from their education, Karen, and you should continue to pay for the education of the people who make your life possible."

A lot of times they even tend to screw left-leaning because it's often the Conservative Politicians who screw them over and they remember it.
We need to stop pretending like Conservatives are pro-Veteran, they're not. They hate Veterans, they hate what Veterans represent. They might say "thank you for your service", but in their minds you should have never come home. You should have given your life for the country.

It's not even about being "bad with money" when the American financial system punishes you if you're too fiscally responsible too. I'm in my late 30s and if I want to buy a car, I'll have no choice but to go to one of those car lots with absurdly high interest, since I have no credit. I'm a "ghost" because I've not taken out loans or had any credit cards, which is worse than having bad credit. Because I was taught to live within my means and not buy things I can't afford. The American financial system rewards living just above your means, unfortunately...

    • @animeartist888
      @animeartist888 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

I'd recommend you get yourself a "credit builder" card. You pay them a deposit of a couple hundred bucks, and "borrow" against that balance. It's reported as a credit card, so your credit score will go up so long as you pay the purchases off on time. And if you successfully reach a certain threshhold, they give you the deposit back and upgrade it to a real credit card. My hubby did this when he moved in with me. Over the course of just 2 years, his credit went from the mid-500s (kinda bad) to 700 (good). That can be the difference between getting declined for an auto loan at anywhere that isn't super shady and having companies falling over themselves to convince you to use their loan above anyone else's. Starting from no credit instead of poor credit should make it even faster for you.
What I taught hubby to do with that credit builder was to pay off anything he bought immediately. Don't pay the minimum, pay the whole balance. You'll never pay more than what you bought if you don't let the card accrue any interest. And if you already have the mindset of "don't buy anything outside my means" you'll probably not overreach anyways. If you're worried, keep a log in your phone to track everything you've bought each week/month and keep yourself in a financially viable budget (or just use the card's app- most of them have auto-updating purchase logs). Also- use it to buy things you need anyways. Use it to pay off a utility bill or buy the weekly groceries. Your credit will improve very quickly.
That said- make sure the builder card and the credit card it upgrades into don't have a yearly or monthly fee. Those are fairly uncommon nowadays, but watch the terms for one anyways. They're just a money sink for no reason. There are plenty of other cards to choose from that don't charge you for the priviledge of having a rectangle of plastic with their logo and your name on it.

I would love to say this isn’t the case, because it doesn’t make sense to sue over a “slip hazard” that you created where one wasn’t there before. I would love to say it, but I can’t. Because I’ve seen people try to sue over insane things too many times, including truly crazy insurance fraud cases.
I’ve even had family involved in one. Just last month my relative’s shop was sued by someone because they allegedly tripped on the sidewalk across the street from the shop. The sidewalk is not owned by my relative, and managing it is the responsibility of the ones who own the entire strip mall, not the people who own one shop there. And there’s also an entire parking lot between that sidewalk and the shops at the mall that they also don’t own. So the only reason why this one shop is being targeted is likely because the person just chose whatever shop they saw first to blame for a sidewalk being slightly uneven. It truly is nonsense that this happened. And yet, they were sued anyways, and it’s probably going to end in a settlement where there’s still going to be more of a payout for this fraudster than they deserve. So yeah, I’ve seen too many people pull this bs to doubt you on this.

But it looks like a fairly urban city. And in general it's my understanding that the city owns the sidewalks. So as if it wasn't bad enough that she slipped on a hazard she intentionally created, but even if she was going to try and sue, she'd have to sue the city. The only angle she could even _try_ to go with to get the shop involved would be 'Because they sold her the pizza'. But let's be honest, there's no judge living or dead who would ever take a case like that seriously.

A clarification for those citing Martin Niemoller: While he's well known for "First they came for", he didn't actually write the poem. That was an edited version of a speech he gave on 6 January, 1948 as part of the church admitting fault, the Confessing Church:
"... the people who were put in the camps then were Communists. Who cared about them? We knew it, it was printed in the newspapers. Who raised their voice, maybe the Confessing Church? We thought: Communists, those opponents of religion, those enemies of Christians-"should I be my brother's keeper?"
Then they got rid of the sick, the so-called incurables. I remember a conversation I had with a person who claimed to be a Christian. He said: Perhaps it's right, these incurably sick people just cost the state money, they are just a burden to themselves and to others. Isn't it best for all concerned if they are taken out of the middle [of society]? Only then did the church as such take note.
Then we started talking, until our voices were again silenced in public. Can we say, we aren't guilty/responsible?
The persecution of the Jews, the way we treated the occupied countries, or the things in Greece, in Poland, in Czechoslovakia or in Holland, that were written in the newspapers. ... I believe, we Confessing-Church-Christians have every reason to say: mea culpa, mea culpa! We can talk ourselves out of it with the excuse that it would have cost me my head if I had spoken out.
We preferred to keep silent. We are certainly not without guilt/fault, and I ask myself again and again, what would have happened, if in the year 1933 or 1934-there must have been a possibility-14,000 Protestant pastors and all Protestant communities in Germany had defended the truth until their deaths? If we had said back then, it is not right when Hermann Göring simply puts 100,000 Communists in the concentration camps, in order to let them die. I can imagine that perhaps 30,000 to 40,000 Protestant Christians would have had their heads cut off, but I can also imagine that we would have rescued 30-40,000 million [sic] people, because that is what it is costing us now." -- Martin Niemoller

10:09 fun fact about pull yourself up by your bootstraps, it was ment to be a metaphor to show that something is impossible or absurd. Not what it has become to be known as today as just do it. Though it does show that a good work life balance today is so absurdly inaccessible to to the majority of people, at least in America, hopefully you have it better in Sweden, I wish life was more accessible to people, but companies want to keep the vast majority of their profits, and even increase the amount of profits that they keep.

The documentary follows one of a few packs through their first year in the park as they establish themselves. I wish Disney+ would start uploading NatGeo Classic, from the 2000s and earlier, along with its newer content. The quality is still fantastic, but I wish I could see my old favorites again.

15:30 No joke, this exact conversation happened today at my new job. We were doing orientation for new employees and the CEO showed up there, and he sat down and explained that he's stressed about the new presidency because tariffs were already high for his liking but are going to absolutely skyrocket. (Most of our product is manufactured overseas, specifically in China.) He had to explain what tariffs were and how they worked. Two of my coworkers, who were bragging and celebrating how Trump won and how "that r////d Camel-a" (their words, not mine) didn't make it into office and blah blah blah ALL day long after the election, were sitting there in shock with their jaws on the floor hearing how pricey things were about to get. It was kind of satisfying seeing them lose a bit of faith in their lord and savior Annoying Orange. I hope the CEO's plan to get manufacturing going elsewhere goes well, or I might be out of a job when everyone decides $800 is too much for a griddle.

Seeing a very distinct pattern on social media posts between American friends with opposing political views.
    1) Trump supporter gloats at Kamala supporter
    2) Kamala supporter shrugs and responds with an expression of how justified they feel when they see how awful this relative is being to them
    3) Trump supporter escalates the aggression and drops some kind of terrible slur or discrimination.
    4) Kamala supporter basically says "See what I mean?"
    5) Trump supporter goes off in an enraged huff
This people KNOW they are wrong and these interactions leave them realising people will NOT back down and join them... They are left with a mess that is their fault alone.
They won... But now their country has lost.
I fear far too many of them will Double, Triple, Quadruple down... This is how a dictatorship is formed.
A swathe of the public FANATICALLY on side of a fascist regime...
These people will "out" those around them. They will send people to the slaughter rather than admit how awful their choice was.
If Trump runs with this control then, distressingly, this kind of thing simply has to run its course... And with a country as big as America... It could take a very long time indeed and end in quite terrible consequences.

Possibly even giving you paid leave? Or wanted you to have a fair and equal pay like others?"
I'm always just genuinely curious as to how they're figuring that a businessman, successful or not, would ever have their best interest in mind

The baby boomer homelessness article wasn't referring to the boomers themselves seeing rates like during the great depression for homelessness. What it was saying is that the boomers are becoming homeless at a rate that is as fast and common as homelessness was during the great depression. So basically, it's just saying homelessness hasn't been this rampant since the great depression. It's rough in the states. Not only has the price of food and everything else skyrocketed, but everyone is forced to rent because you can't find homes for purchase anymore without being filthy rich, and rent goes up almost every year by between 30-60$ depending on location, but where I live it's been in that range. About another 30$ a year for a rundown crappy studio apartment or a hike of 60$+ a year if you live in a even moderately nice apartment. Other places have evicted all their tenants to raise the cost of rent from 700$ or more to about a grand a month. These landlords and companies charging these ungodly rent prices all need to be thrown in jail and their properties forfeited. Landlords practically have monopolies in each city for living spaces and everyone else suffers because of their greed. It's disgusting and utterly despicable. Can't even work to survive without at least two people for one small apartment. It's horrid.

Honestly, I think the reason some of the older generation hasn't learned about actions=consequences is because of their weird idea of respect combined with how they were raised.
They were taught not to disrespect or question their elders. Did this stop them? Absolutely not. However, now that they're the elders, they believe they should be "respected". Respect, to them, means being treated like an authority who is above consequences.
Plus, when they were younger, stronger, more attractive, etc, they probably DID get away with more.
Lastly, they just haven't kept up. When they were young, smoking was allowed, so it should ALWAYS be allowed, because the passage of time doesn't exist to peiple who don't want to admit they're aging.

    • @wartgin

And then they turned 30, and couldn't handle it.
By the time they turned 40, they were already attacking us Gen-Xers for not being like they were when they were our age. They called us "slackers." Our response was, "Oh, so you want us to go out and protest and make a lot of noise about the ills of the world, and then sell out like you did?"
Someone I knew, back in _my 20s,_ from the Baby Boom generation once started in with, "Your generation may think, 'Never trust anyone over 30,' now, but…" That's when I interrupted him, "No Gen-X doesn't say that. You have 2 words too many. We say, 'Never trust anyone.'" He was quite shocked by that.

Why wait 4 years, lose an election to Biden and then hope to win and take away people’s right? It doesn’t make sense. Besides, he’s already given abortion back to the states permanently. Kamala nor Trump can take that away and he has already promised that insurance companies will be forced to pay for IVF for women. That sounds like giving women better healthcare and rights to me. Not taking them away. That’s just what I’ve researched recently.
There is one part that I agree with you on though, I’m scared for his supporters too. Black men and women are being attacked and ridiculed on the streets simply for voting for Trump. I also have seen people get spit on and assaulted for wearing a Trump hat. Scary world out there where if someone disagrees with you, it gives them the right to attack and silence you.

I'm so tired of "I'm not part of this demographic so I shouldn't pay taxes related to that demographic"..... The point of taxes is literally so someone doesn't pay out of pocket for stuff, also, I bet those people would very much mind if people stoped paying the taxes that help them. It's so weird how this people seem to think that only they pay taxes for others, and that others don't pay taxes for them? Then again, they probably think they earned everything they have, like ya know, roads, clean streets, police, army, yup, they payed for all of that directly and definitely isn't the collective effort of everyones taxes.... It's funny how they complain about higher taxes cuz they won't have enough to pay out of pocket for stuff then (ignoring the fact that the reach should pay higher taxes to reduce the amount the middle and lower class has to pay) but yes... That is the point, so at the end, you don't need to pay 50k for an ambulance, it becomes free.... You dunce...

Regarding not taking out student loans, I'm in an incredibly privileged position. My parents are letting me live at home rent-free to work my way through school well into my 20s. At two classes a semester, my tuition is over $3,000 per semester. Parking on campus is $8 a day. Textbooks and homework programs are a few hundred dollars. It's taking me twice as long as it should because I'm not taking loans, and I'm still privileged because of my housing situation. How are 18 year old kids supposed to navigate this shit?
