Ahh I didn’t know that and was wondering about this. Good to know that a catch can is needed though either way you go (if you decide to turbo the BRZ/FRS).
The FA20 BRZ boxer platform is not the greatest from factory.... However... If this engine is rebuilt it has endless potential. It can make more power than EJ series... (pistons, con rods, compression ratio rebuild etc) This engine is the best 2.0L Four cyclinder engine ever engineered in Japan (REBUILT IS THE KEY WORD HERE) just look it up...
All i want is the FA20F with the FA20D aluminum intake manifold so that the FA20F could have all 8 injectors. But even then, its not so simple. The wiring and comptuer mess would be tons in R&D alone.
Tim Middleton look up ibuildracecars.com they have fabricated a kit that allows you to swap intake manifolds. You will need a front mount intercooler and Aftermarket fuel rails plus a good tuner but it is now possible.
Jackson Racing Supercharger c30-94 at 9 psi red ine is fantastic! Runs smooth no issues Got the duel radiator oil cooler product as well. Conservative 91 octane Factory carb legal tune. When pushed she is very fasy. have a 3 inch catback from greddy adds power with supercharger as well.
Brett, you mentioned for the FA20 in the BRZ roughly 7 PSI to be the sweetspot concerning power and reliability. How much power and torque do those engines typically make with such a boost levels (at the crank)?
my measly understanding is that the engineering of the fa20 is quite good, however the metallurgy leaves something to be desired if you want to go forced induction. getting forged internals will make this engine go pretty damn far
I don’t know if this will get a response because it’s on an older video but I was thinking about getting a WRX and I was just wondering how much comfortable power you can make out of it with it still being a daily drivable vehicle I don’t need 400 hp I was just looking for maybe STI level horsepower or something that I could get to where it would still be reliable and not on the edge of blowing up
I cant find any answer or swaps anywhere about this but i have VERY important question, could you swap a wrx engine in the brz while just plug and play? Does it mount right up to the brz transmission? I want to trade my car for a brz with 135k mile engine in it so i want to know if the engine fails that i can just find a wrx engine and just swap it easily? I see in the video theres some differences between the 2 engines but i just want a simple answer if i could swap a turbo wrx engine into a brz simply and smoothly?
Subaru Makes engines for Toyota FRS but I am sure they stress test the engine and told them what to do to improve it and change. Same thing as the Supra where Toyota tells bmw on what to improve and modify
No they dont for the fa20dit engine (wrx). The twin scroll is more responsive, produces less back pressure and is over all more efficient than UEL headers. Plus based on design you cannot have a twin scroll uel header. (I already asked this question)
mmm…I will say try some combination…like FA20 NA head and FA20DIT block…if that block is stronger by adding some ribs to the water jacket…or even close deck or semi close deck …should be fun
for every one who thinks of swapping the wrx engine into a brz, there is an other big difference, on the wrx the starter is on the left side, on the brz its on the right side, so you cant really use the rwd gearbox of the brz with the wrx engine... Im very sad :(
At 9 psi I know my car puts out approx. 216 ft/lbs torque at the crank. with the 3 inch Greddy Evolution GT catback untuned she puts out about 220 to 225 ft/lbs torque at the crank
in comparison to other well known tuner engines, these and the one found in new supra/z4 are super-crammed-in-there.. all covered in tons of plastic and then they wonder how they have cooling issues for example on the bmw inline6 - the one just prior to the supra engine ... aah well they’re the engineers 😀
Well ... at this point i think that an ej20 or 25 Will be a better and easier swap on a BRZ ahahaha and cheaper too , considering that the turbo FA20 Comes Just in the new wrx xD
I did 140mph at 5000 rpm easily and got there very quickly without peddle to the floor either.Car will accelerate to 7250rpm at least! talking at least 155 to 160 or so! for real.
Well they are the FA20. It’s shit though because you’d think they would have good pistons and rods. They should have went with fully forged internals. I don’t even know why they didn’t.
Also the BRZ has a Toyota D4S direct and port injection fuel system, and the WRX is only direct injected.

When is the R&D WRX getting forged internals? Would love to see what MRT can do with a bigger turbo, forged internals and some e85!

The tensioner on the BRZ/86 is actually beneath the alternator not the idler pointed to in the middle.
Bret, these videos are great. Very cool how knowledgeable you are on Subaru’s
absolutely no headaches no worries lots of fun addictive amazing sound, reliability and 2nd generation mid 1990 Acura NSX acceleration and power!
Love how the turbo is hidden and allows the engine bay to look oem.
Just wished AVO worked with equal length manifold
Isn't that an AVO turbo kit on the BRZ...
Exactly what i was thinking lol
Can a EJ257 fit in the BRZ? Will the hood close over top of the EJ257? Are there any figment issues with putting an EJ257 in the BRZ?

Is there any real difference between the Pink STI oil filter as compared to the standard black oil filter that a 2015+ WRX takes?
Where the intercooler on the brz?. Front mount?.
At how much power does the WRX start getting conrod issues?
Did you use a wrx manifold???? I would like to know cause I’m chasing a rabit if a fa20 turbo manifold will bolt to a ej
Brett, you mentioned for the FA20 in the BRZ roughly 7 PSI to be the sweetspot concerning power and reliability. How much power and torque do those engines typically make with such a boost levels (at the crank)?
Mines getting 300 whp on 10 ish psi
Mine is also 300whp at 10psi. Or about 340 crank. 7 psi would be about 260-270whp...300 crank. Less driventrain loss in rwd.
I made 389whp at 11 psi on e85
my measly understanding is that the engineering of the fa20 is quite good, however the metallurgy leaves something to be desired if you want to go forced induction. getting forged internals will make this engine go pretty damn far
my only question is.. is it safe to be at 7Psi and run e85 or is that already too much stress on the motor
Can i instal the fa20dit to my brz and what exactly i need to swap it in to my brz please help me with this question?!
Let me know if you find out , I’m looking to swap to a FA20
You can, but the cost kills any value in doing it.

Probably a simple ECU reflash to better suit your local fuel and you'll probably achieve STi level power :)

2jz would be better.
So basically pistons and rods and you're good? Doesn't seem that bad given the power you want to extract from a 2.0
With aftermarket rod/pistons people have been getting 500whp+ out of the FA20DIT's
Go low compression on the pistons as well
Interested in tuning options in a my17 impreza 5sp fa20 that we have here in the states.
driven both. brz is so much more fun to drive
In other words. Toyota helped Subaru in reliability...
More like the other way around

@@austinhowze6280 lol..subaru is known for their reliable engines now? dumb fanboy
@@bboyairrick lmao if they wa ssd's not reliable then why they used on airplane and boats
@@austinhowze6280 Please explain how.
These figure include 93 octane gas on a 91 octane tune. with a 93 octane tune approx. an additional 2 to 3 ft/lbs torque more than a 91 tune
Hi Brett. Is it at all possible to get the iconic wrx rumble back with the 2017 WRX FA20 ,do they make aftermarket UEL headers.
No they dont for the fa20dit engine (wrx). The twin scroll is more responsive, produces less back pressure and is over all more efficient than UEL headers. Plus based on design you cannot have a twin scroll uel header. (I already asked this question)

Is the conrod failure do to the offset design? And does a set of stronger rods solve the issue or are the rods still limiting?

What about the other way around. Can a naturally aspirated brz engine used in a wrx with stock wrx transmission?
On my wrx it said 23 max peak boost what does that mean
But the block is the same yeah?
The fa20 wrxs come with the twin scroll, the ej ones do not /:
Could you put a WRX in a BRZ?
Is the fa20t in the forester the same as the wrx?
Jacobra M yep
@@crispinsugita9398 no...different cams and tighter valvesprings wrx

davie crocket you sure about those numbers? That seems pretty low for 9 psi? Just curious if you meant like 316?
These videos are always good. Keep em coming.
1. How much is the brz turbo kit?
2. How much power does the brz make on 7psi
Alot but it would be about even.
I just want a turbo kit that has a cam shaft driven oil system thats also CARB legal. A guy can only dream
the only carb legal kit I know about is the works kit. here in mendocino county there is no smog check. good news if I end up living here long term
Why would you want it to run off the cam?
Do you guys offer a oem style oil cooler for the BRZ?
Great video!!!:) Very professional
Adan Melchor i have to concur. How rude of me to forget to compliment their work! Good job MRT!
Great video, thanks Brett
Gday mate i have wrx sti 2017 and it’s on 6k miles now and im about to change the oil soon any recommended best synthetic oil?
BLackStar 17 Rotella T6.
-Slurmdaddy - thanks mate
What turbo kit is that on the Subaru BRZ
Sounds like an AVO Turbo kit

My wife has a 2015 WRX totally standard and will be staying that way is bending conrods something we need to be concerned about
Stock? Definitely not. Just use proper fuel and you are good to go.
Wrx all the way 😎
We need to see Drag race to know the difference
Like if you agree 👍
A turbo brz would wipe the floor with a wrx
Very nice.
Great video! Keep it up ;-)

elia onnembo New gen sti going to have it but I’m sure rod issue will be addressed, I’m curious to see what a bigger 2.5 L FA can put down
-Slurmdaddy - i hope they make it better ^^

Both piston rings and rods will grenade a Subaru engine. Both the same
Well they are the FA20. It’s shit though because you’d think they would have good pistons and rods. They should have went with fully forged internals. I don’t even know why they didn’t.
The br zed
+1 EJ
Ones a tractor and ones a go kart.
Watch the end. Lol the place is about to blow, he talks fast lol
Good video though
listening to him pronounce zee as zed is driving me nuts cant watch anymore .
...blame the Brits 🇬🇧, it's their fault.
You're cringe
Both engines are trash
Cool story bro
