  • STEAM Flat Irons - Are they BETTER? 🤔
    You might have started seeing these Flat Irons on Facebook, IG, and Amazon. They are trying to get viral on social media. I thought I would get ahead of the trend here and test these out for your consideration to purchase one. In general the idea of a steam flat irons is interesting, but they do have many limitations as you will see in my comparisons/tests. Let me know your thoughts and your experience (if you are willing to share) with these hair irons.

    I love when Macy joins you in videos yay! 💕
    I remember my first ever flat iron was a steam iron (Srsly - about 20 yrs ago! 👵) & it was such a pain!
    It had a huge water chamber but it would use it up so fast. This was before we had ceramic plates EEK! So essentially I was using technology use in a stainless steel household iron, with steam, on my hair, with very little heat protection because it wasn't a 'thing' back then! **shudders.. How did my hair not burn off?!**
    The closest thing to heat protection was the original frizz-ease (which I don't think promoted any heat protection?)
    The steam iron left my hair so fly-away on top (because I literally didn't know what I was doing r.e. Smoothing products) & it wouldn't keep the hair very straight for long.
    Luckily I learnt about GHD the next year (a tabloid said that's what they used on 'Rachel from Friends' lol 😂 so I'm forever grateful to Jennifer Aniston for bringing GHD into my life!)
    I also had that wet-to-dry flat iron about 10-15 years ago & actually LOVED it lololol 😂
    It did make awful noises (& obviously lots of steam from drying wet hair with intense heat) but it left my hair sooooo smooth!
    I do worry, in hindsight, that it was probably super damaging, because it's widely agreed that you shouldn't use extreme heat on wet hair (Flat iron level heat, not hair dryer level heat iykwim?)
    Aww I'm getting nostalgic for my wet-to-dry straighter now lol!
    Thanks for another great video girls! 💕

    I think it didn’t work because you have chosen two low-end steam straighteners, try the more expensive ones (like the steampod from L'Oreal, the best straightener of all, in my opinion), you will not be disappointed.

    I had a steam flat iron back in the early 2000s. It’s not scorching your hair...the noise is the steam coming from the flat iron (just like it does with a clothes iron.) :)

    They’re the best for coarse frizzy thick hair. Because they infuse moisture via steam into the hair shaft. A lot of naturally coarse frizzy haired girls guys have low porosity hair which has trouble maintaining moisture. Steam straighteners have been a game changer for me. I’ve tried T3, Dyson, Chi and nothing worked like my steam straightener.

    My grandmother had an old steam curling iron that she gave me back in the 90s. I don't know how long she had it before then but it was really damaging. It's basically like using a heat styler on still damp hair. You're cooking it.

    *You should do this again with the SteamPod straighteners!*
    I've had the original SteamPod for 12 years, and it still works like a charm.
    It's a game changer for anyone with thick and/or curly hair, and none of the straighteners I have ever tried has compared to it so far.
    I notice that my hair has a much better hold when there is moisture after I've used the SteamPod, in comparison to other straighteners or straightening methods.
    Also, the new 4.0 version has a curling feature that looks perfect for long hair!

    I tried a similar steam flat iron to the big one you tried, it came with some type of "cream" you have to apply on the hair before going in with the flat iron
    It worked great on my afro hair (I do relaxe my hair but I use flat irons when I want a nice slick look) BUT I kind of burned my scalp because of that cream combined with the steam action too close to my scalp...
    Gave up on it to go back to a regular flat iron

    The Loreal steampod is amazing, maybe you should test this one vs the steampod. The L'oreal steampod is supposed to give you a more natural look, so if you are someone that doesn't love the poker straight look, and prefer a more natural finish then maybe a steam based iron is better. I have coarse, thick long hair and the steampod works great!

    My hair is thick and same length as yours. I have a steam flat iron that is the style you used and the water in my chamber (same size as yours) will last for at least two or three hair straightening sessions. You must be passing multiple times on each strand. I only have to pass once. I might so twice if I feel like it here and there.
    My iron will leave my hair looking like yours did with the iron that has no steam. It's very sleek, including the ends. My plates don't clamp down super tight which allows me to pass over quick. At first I felt like they were clamping too loose, but I think it is because my iron has floating plates. (They adjust to how much hair you have.) I feel so much better using my steam iron than the regular. I tried going back to my old one once and didn't like it. went right back to the steam. I would never expect it to curl and never tried. So who knows as far as that goes. I would probably reach for my regular because of the curvature on the sides of the plates (meant to curl) whereas the steam is just a flat plate.
    As for your friend's steam iron I think that releases way too much steam the way it comes out and can completely believe it would be left damp, but several passes are definitely going to do that. I used to have a flat iron like that with the come attachment. I loved that about the iron. Comb and straighten in one rather than hold a comb in front of the iron while straightening. It was so much more convenient. Oh my gosh that was my first flat iron ever. I was so sad when it died only because i could not find another flat iron with the comb attachment anywhere. I WISH I had one like that still.
    Too bad the iron didn't work for you. I love mine! I've had it almost a year now.

    Unfortunately, I am about to date myslef... I learned to curl my hair with a blue curling iron I bought at a rummage sale in 1978 when I was 10 years old. The baby blue curling iron was a steamed one. You filled the handle with water. To this day I remember the smell of that iron.

    • @holyexperience1976
      @holyexperience1976 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was only 2 in '78. I never heard of curling iron until I was 16, 17. I bought myself one with my allowance, I think, flea market that used to be in the town of most of my upbringing. It was, what they call, a Z-curl iron back then ( now prolly call it cork screw instead ). I stopped having it when I was 20 and briefly moved out. I did not use it much, as I was almost never allowed to wear my hair down.
      If I were to use a curling unit today, I would prefer iron over wand. Do not have to hold hair in place. But I have not been into wearing curly hair since my early 20s, and even then, it was not all the time, where even as a youth, I preferred straight hair. My mother curled my bangs anyway with pink rollers, and rare time of getting to wear it partly down or banana clip, her deciding what I am wearing on photo day or special occasion, it was curled with pink rollers, and maybe couple times as a teen, hot rollers, especially on graduation night ( even though I was of age on graduation night, she chose the style and did my hair).
      A few short times curled hair in early 20s, and once waved my hair with a waving iron that was out in early 00s that had some material fabric on the plates, I was a full-time straight type. I am thinking, at 44, I may once in awhile curl again, but if so, try hot air brush instead curling iron. I would want to cork screw curl. Or may try to use cut up fabric instead and sleep in that. I might surprise myself and get hot rollers, but rather get hot air brush first. I still see myself mainly sporting straight hair, especially since curly hair ages me a bit ( to me, anyway.... )
      First though, getting a new travel size Ion hot brush that almost looks like a beard brush. Lost motivation to flat iron, and want to try something new. If not straighten to my satisfaction, then electric hot comb or straightening comb.
      Side note, my bro was 11 in '78. My elder sis, if not for stillbirth, would have been 9 in '78.
      Do not feel bad about dating yourself. Getting elder is a fact of life, but does not mean you are old.

      I wish flat irons in general have options with teeth for those of us with Black hair. The roots are the most unless relaxed....My hair comes from my Black side of family, and the only one with teeth used on me was when I used to go to this salon, and they used Paul Mitchell flat iron. But sadly, cannot buy, as it is over $100. But then, I rather not do anymore than $30 on flat iron. I can do without the steam option, though.

      Holy Experience I have 3a curls but my roots can be really kinky! It’s so hard to get them smooth! I just straighten with a regular straightener and then Kristin Ess has a root taming tool that is awesome!

    I'm not sure steaming the hair and applying heat at the same time is safe for the hair. The humidity evaporating could cause internal damage to the hair strand. That is why you shouldn't use iron on a damp hair, so I don't understand how that isn't the same thing.

  • @hairhandler
    @hairhandler ปีที่แล้ว

    Should have primed hair with heat protection. It would have let the iron glide smoother.

      In case I decide to get a new flat iron again one day, I will look if I have time before my next therapy session or after, and if not too much, I save up for it. Right now, started flat iron hiatus, want to try something different and maybe feels more fun to use, so, hoping to score Ion travel size hot brush instead, that almost looks like a beard brush bristle wise.....

    The steam idea does seem counterproductive to me. Obviously when the steam hits your cool hair or the air it starts to condense and will make your hair damp. Then your natural wave will come back when it dries.

    • @tinabriggs8079
      @tinabriggs8079 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, humidity = frizz. I don't see the point of products like this.

    • @Littlewings1211
      @Littlewings1211 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tinabriggs8079 it's like if you have dried your hair and styled it and then you go to the gym and get all sweaty or you get caught in a slight rain shower, the natural wave/curl of the hair will always come back through when it gets damp or we would never need to straighten our hair more than once in our lives 😂

    I’m wondering why did you choose to go for low quality steam flat irons when there are more popular ones like SteamPod & MaxiGlide 🤔 The L’Oréal one is very popular. Although all TH-camrs confirmed it gives better results than normal straighteners, I was hoping to see your opinion about it because I trust your reviews. There are many people in the comments here requesting a review of the Steampod, I hope to see a response video soon to your followers. Love your content 😘
