How to mask a room up with wood floors ready for spray painting. Here Im masking up a room ready to spray using floor protection, brown paper tape and polythene.
The reason I sprayed the walls and ceiling is because I needed to be finished in one day. The quickest area to paint by hand was the woodwork, it would have taken me alot longer on my own to 2 coat walls and ceilings in 4 big rooms. So I masked off the floors which would need protecting how ever you chose to paint.
Every job is different and its about working effiecently. This way had me finished in a fraction of the time and alot less stress on the body.

To all the DIYers. Notice when he's cleaning up that he's always standing on the plastic or a tarp. Even after the paint is dried the dust will stick to your shoes and track on the wood floors. You can also pull up a corner then take off your shoes and avoid stepping on dirty plastic.
Simple idea but its easy to overlook.
Yes it is often over looked and foot prints can be made. Even when people think theres little over spray

I usually have my helper back rolling the walls and ceilings after I spray them. I spray the walls, trim, and baseboards all in one shot if I’m painting everything in a room 1 color. I prefer to have stippling on the walls and ceiling and no brush strokes in the trim if I can avoid it.
Spraying everything in the same paint? I dont back roll every time depends what customer wants

Great video! I'm preparing to paint 1 wall in our mudroom/entry room off the garage. I built a "Hall Tree" (Built-in bench & overhead shelf to hand coats) and installed primed MDF board and batten on the wall. There are so many transitions and I want it to look smooth so I decided to spray it. I had to pull off some of the floor trim when building it and installed new trim. The new floor trim will be white and the 1 wall with board and batten, shelving and some of the bench (everything that is not stained or is floor trim) will be gray.
I've started taping and masking but I'm struggling with how to proceed. I've been planning to add a small, thin bead of clear caulk to paint and then immediately remove in the areas that aren't being painted (to get a laser-straight line per "The Idaho Painter) but I don't know how to do that when I need 2 coats of paint (or 1 coat primer on the bare wood and 2 coats paint) without pulling the paint off with the masking.
I'm planning to hang plastic to create a kind of spray booth to prevent overspray from hitting the other walls in the room.
I just filmed a short 30-second video showing the project. (Masking and taping not done) I would love to get any advice/tips you could recommend.

Looking good. I prefer to over mask. You'll have dust in the air that will settle on anything around so you'll be cleaning if you dont mask. Id come out with more brown paper and do double width just to avoid any mistakes. Polythene the larger areas. Dont be afraid to use more tape than you thijk you'll need. I see some people spray with very little masking but i think they would jave settled dry fall in places

Any advice on applying multiple coats and then removing masking without tearing/bridging paint?
I’ve heard it’s important to remove the tape while the paint is wet. But then how do you apply multiple coats?
@@jeffsstuff6575 good question. One trick is to apply a piece of tape that goes against the wood slightly further away from the item. Then add one length ontop which goes closer to the item. Then if you need to remove while wet. You can take that length of tape away and hopefully the rest stays in place. Then ones dry simply lay a new piece of tape back over and re coat with top coats.
As painful as it can be. If just removed the first sections and then added again afterwards if needed
@@sprayaholic So basically, pulling the tape while wet for each coat - whether that means laying multiple layers (one for each coat) or retaping after each coat - correct?
@@jeffsstuff6575 yes you can sometimes just remove the 1 piece of tape closes to the item you're spraying. But leave all the masking behind it. Depends what im spraying i may tape and remove after primer, re tape a line against the item im.spraying and do 2 coats then remove. I spray a lighter first and thicker second coat. Pull off while wet

Hiya hope great videos, can i just ask why the 2nd coat? I thought spraying is applied thicker than rollers?
Hey, you can apply it thicker than a roller but if you hit it un even then you'll see patches. Especially with a lot of natural light fron windows. If its a darker area you could get away with it. But i do 1 quicker coat which is touch dry by the time i finish the room once. Then apply again heavier and usually in the opposite direction.

Hi, why spray the walls first and not the ceiling, is there a reason for this ? wouldn't do it that way round if using conventional method, ie, brush roller, wanting to know as i'am just about to start using sprayers after 37 years doing it the old fashion way, cheers
Hey. So the main reasons are.. if its a colour, you can lap onto the ceiling. Then mask off the walls and spray the ceiling. Its easier to mask walls tban ceilings.
Other main reason especially with white on white. If you sprayed the ceiling first youd ve walking around in all the overspray. On your feet and in the air etc, so ceilings last and walk away from the spray means less mess and youre out of a potentially fogged up room

Hi, I’m new to spraying, I’ve just went about masking my upstairs and down stair hallway, 16 door ways which includes cupboards, the plan is to to do ceiling/ walls and wood work but it’s took a life time, have I aimed to high to soon or what’s your thoughts? It’s really put me off as of the time to do this, also what’s the best way to know if you have to water down the various paints or not, in my case a separate paint for walls/ceiling and then wood, skirtings and wood panelling, any advice would be much appreciated, thanks
Sometimes it's not always beneficial to spray everything as it could be quicker to roll. But masking takes time when youre new, it does get faster as you realise better ways to do things. I add 5 to 10% water. If bare plaster 20 to 30 for first coat.
Youve probably had a go at the hardest section of a house as its different shapes all over unlike a square room with a few doors and similar height ceiling

I know this was posted a year ago but I’m just wondering if you think it would be a good idea to finish all the wood, leave it a couple of days to harden and then mask up and spray the emulsion on? Getting the keys for our new house next week, going off white everywhere to give us a blank canvas
how did you get on? i dont always get notifications sorry. but yes in an ideal world you would do woodwork first and then mask. this was different as they added wood flooring after which wasnt the original plan. so i had to adapt to try and keep the samw time frame

Thanks for watching. It depends really how much work it is. Or if its a simple colour change freshen up id probs roll as its fast. If im making it flawless then maybe spray. Here's one i did in a home with furniture even though its just ceilings doesnt take long to mask up

I will spray straight after the first coat as you'llfind its likely flash dried. I'll sprayer a fasters first coat then a thicker second.

On the floor? Pack ex are a popular brand that provides protection. I call it roll and strole floor protection. We have quite a few cheaper alternatives. Its sticky one side, they make it for wooden and hard surfaces and also one for carpets

@@bailey2624 the clean up is fast, with it rolling up its easy. And it means no tape used on joins etc.

Hey. Ye i cant deal with the roll out card. This was similar to packexe floor protector. It was for wooden floors so it has q slight stick.

@@James-sf5bb haha ye builders fault. Id already mist coated and when i came back theyd fitted loads of wood flooring. Originally it was being carpeted so i would have sprayed. But obviously this held me up alot and it would take longer to spray emulsion than to do woodwork. Didnt take too long by hand and i cracked on same day while walls were drying
greetings from australia ... may i ask as i knew to spraying, why you cover theflooring with this product instead of canvas drop sheets as we all use as standard painters , (ie non sprayers ) whats the advantages vs drop sheets .. thanx in advance
Hey man, so the blue floor protector is designed for hardwood floors. Its sticky on one side and is easy to lay. Dust sheets will hold all the over spray and will be pretty dusty when taking up. You can use them, but some dont prevent paint leaking through. This was one room in a 5 bedroom house so it was more efficient to protect the floor through out than use a hundred sheets that you can trip on and slide on

Its like a plastic sheet that you can tape together. Or ram board or x board which is rolls of cardboard . Alot of different ways to protect.

I've watched a few of your vids, all great stuff, thank you. So, when spraying skirting/architrave, you don't seem to mask when spraying walls. I assume this is because when you spray the walls this covers the overspray? Cheers
Hi on this job like i said its easier and faster to mask woodwork off and paint by hand the same day.
You can spray woodwork to a finish then mask off spray walls. Mask off and do ceilings. Or spray 1 coat walls nearly to your woodwork. Then finish woodwork lap onto walls. Finish ceiling and roll walls.
I often do sand the woodwork overspray down, alot say you dont need to. But i have jad issues. Such as when the temperature is quite low th paint sags on the overspray as it dries slower.
So you could quickly mask your walls up if in any doubts, it doesnt tae long. Or spray it on and a quick run over with the sander

Wow that was quick for the second coat! We are first timers and thought you need to wait a few hours per the tin - FYI we use Jonstones Covaplus.
@MBA 007 because youre not actually touching the surface the paint wont pull back off like with a roller.
Ye ive used covaplus alot before. Mist coats i like to leave a good few hours or next day, then sand fill etc. Then I'll spray a lighter forst coat, the it will probably dry pretty fast. Second coat on topa bit heavier
@@sprayaholic cool. That makes sense. We have a 390 and used for the first time yesterday. Really struggled with Covaplus even through we used the 517 tip and 2500psi pressure and thinned it down by 10% for the mist coat.
By struggle I mean, the pressure kept dropping so needed to thin 20-30% to stop the pressure dropping but thining that much doesn’t seem to make sense compared to paint manufacturers instructions. I would have expected the 2nd and 3rd coats to be thicker and undiluted 😳
@MBA 007 i mist coat at 20 to 30% regardless of what it says. Then all my top coats at 10% thinned. If pressure was dropping theres a chance you had some dirt inside the pump which stopped it from working fully. Also check filter for being clogged

Thats right. I do this to avoid walking around in the over spray on the air or on the floor. And then i walk away from the spray not.into it

I will generally spray longest way on ceilings then shortest. So yes its cross hatched. Walls i do sometimes but generally not although its Good practice as can catch your misses

thanks, yes ive seen the tadpole cutter. but never use one. did you catch my video on how to tear tape?
sometimes they spit when material can be abit thicker, or when paint hangs on the guard. it happens alot with most guys and guns. best advice if its old gun is to change the needle or strip the gun and clean it as it may not be closing when trigger is released causing it to shoot some paint out.

@JdubbJdubb if you have good technique, not alot. But it does fall as dust. As these were wood floors if you stood in it youd be treading it everywhere.
You may have answered this before but do you charge customers for the materials i.e tape/floor protection etc or do you try to incl that in labour costs? Thanks
I charge the lot to the customer. Most times I'll go in with a labour price and an estimated material costs. No break down. Just give them a low ball and a higher cost to give them an idea. Then ask for materials before starting if its alot

Hey. Yes its hard floor protector slightly sticky one side. Comes in rolls. They make one for carpet too. This was just a cheap branded one
How do you mask the ceiling?
If youre walls are a colour. I spray them and then mask the walls. So im spraying the ceiling last

@@davidsculley6304 ye totally those plastic rolls can come to nearly 10quid and then tape the idasa ones fit on the masker and are 6ish pound. I buy most of mine from crown decorating stores.
Is quicker spraying that size room with fittings? I would prepare and hand paint that size room with two coats in about 7 hours Would you finish any quicker?
Id have still finished quicker. Atleast half the time with masking. But this is just a video showing a room. It was a 5 bed house i did. Just showed this room

@@Minechain. oh for sure. The ceiling as alot of critical light and would have shown alot of texture, roll marks etc. Spray was the way forward. I finished the job in 7 days. Brush and roll would have easily been 20+ days on my own.

usually i spray woodwork first, then walls, mask walls off and spray ceilings. But on this occasion the builder as delayed and they had a last minute change and put wood flooring down . so I sprayed all walls and ceilings and brush woodwork. ment i could do it the same day

@@dangeranger69 you could spray woodwork and roll walls. Or mask the ceiling. Spray woodwork. Mask next day and spray walls.
Strange. Its not always best to spray so gauge your time.. obviously if you can afford to practice then thats great
Great video's on this channel. Could you tell me wich masking tapes u use? In the Netherlands we don't have that many choices in that. As well as a masking kit.
Hey appreciate the support. I have been using a brand called indasa. They sell the blue polythene with tape attached. That fits on the 3m hand masker. And the low tac amd precision.
Other good brands are tesa and deltec.
The hand masker is a 3m m3000

@@hanshendriksen3859 awesome. So yhe machines max tip size is a .17 so such as a 517 id change to the graco LP low pressure tips. You'll be able to run lower pressure and probably get a nicer fan faster.

How bad is the overspray in an airless? If i am only painting the walls, do i need to mask the ceiling?
Yes you would need to mask or Shield the area off. The over spray can ve very littlw depending on the tip size you use. It can be more controlled the smaller the tip

@@330d5 no I usually use 12" paper. It all comes down to youre wrist. If yoy flick your wrist at the top of the wall it will go more on the ceilings. Keep the gun faving the wall and will have less over spray on ceiling. I found a 516 was very controlled

When painting the walls do you release the trigger when you reach the ceiling or just quickly move across.
I do both. Depends if the guns spitting on release or not

@@richardbeadle3945 yes you definitely can get too much on doing it that way, also more over spray and wasted paint if youre not careful. Its more controlled to trigger on and off. It allows you to line up your next pass better

Wait you only sprayed one coat? No primer and one coat of paint? So you could take the tape off while wet?
Id already sprayed a primer on the walls and ceilings and sanded and prepped up a few days before the flooring was fitted. Then i masked up and sprayed 2 coats one after the other then de masked.
Yes the paint can pull up with the masking if left to dry so scoring sometimes is needed. It depends on rhe finish of the paintz some paints dont do it
What is your goto paint for white walls and waterbased woodwork? And do you dilute either?
It changes on jobs. I do like crown matt vinyl as it's nice and flat. Mistcoated im around 30% and top coats about 5 to 10%. Again woodwork can xhange from crown, to zinsser allcoat or Tikkurila. Generally 5% just to ease flow

@@chrisball2258 yes bud. You can use any brand on any gun. You just need to use the same branded guard. So i had a tritech guard on the gun. All guns in uk at 7/8 thread i think so all interchangeable wagner/titan graco tritech etc. America i think some guns have different threads.

Hey thanks for watching. I think you'll see a touch up regardless of rolled in brushed or sprayed and it mainly comes down to the paint. Some touch up better. You can touch up a spray wall with a roam roller if its thinned down abit as it will gel out. But the flatter the paint the easier it can touch up
@@sprayaholic exactly even touching up rolled walls these days is just has much of a problem I’m really not sure you benefit from back rolling in my opinion, try touching up a ceiling even if rolled for example can be a nightmare

yes similar process. they do a roll out protection for carpet too. then just tape and brown paper the same. no paint gets through
I'm spraying mdf skirting with zinsser bin 123 then 2 coats of dulux water based satin. I'm masking that up to paint walls but the tape is pulling the paint on skirtings. Like all of it down to the primer that's on the mdf when it comes. What am I doing wrong?
Not all of it, just some places
Lots of preparation Chris, maybe dust on the surface when your spraying, I always give it a good sand and wipe down after. Use low tack edging tape as well. It's happened to me before and learned from my mistakes
@@waggstaff91 I think that's what it was too. Started cleaning it with tack cloths now and it's solved the problem. It's a small amount of dust that presumably gets rubbed in if you were painting it with a brush.
What do you use for the woodwork?
Do you have to use a different type of paint for the ceiling vs the wall?
You can use the same if you like. We try and make ceilings look non reflective especially in areas with alot of day light. Small rooms etc wouldnt matter too much.

Let’s say the customer wanted to do the skirting board trim doors walls and ceiling all one color and sheen. What would you spray first? I’m just worried about the paint dust if u know what u mean
Never done one with the same paint before. But ceilings and walls id do walls first then ceilings. Guess you could just spray all in one go if you can control the overspray. Or spray woodwork first and then mask up and spray walls and ceilings

@@aldeirgoncalves2975 we often work around items. Or if they need to be moved or removed we say in our estimate items need to be moved prior to our arrival, we can not be held responsible for any damage incurred from moving items. And get them to sign a disclaimer. Or add more money on to the job

It probably took about 30 mins to do the lot including the blue flooring. If youre masking with the hand maskers its very fast, windows and doors are easy. I had 4 rooms to do at the same time so time saved was massive
De mask the windows doors skirts and flooring came up in about 5 mins. I waited got the light switches and radiator to tack off a little and again minutes
Just out of interest how much would you charge for that room materials not paint just tape etc
This was a room from a full house i was doing. But an average room you could say no more than £35 thats for a full roll of brown paper, polythene, 1x sensitive tape, 1x precision tape. Floor protector. Could use correx sheets and re use.

I spray a quickish first coat. Which has dried by the time I finish the room. So second coat ontop.

@@robinhowes2453 I use everbuild "roll & stroll" 75m £30 for carpets off Amazon. I use Q1 floor pro board( brown roll)45m for hallways, kitchens, laminates etc £28. That's from My paint brush. 👍🏻

@Dino Devitis hey. Well graco stopped making the 618fflp . I do use the 619LP but you can tell a difference between the 2.
The tritech 618 is the same pace as the 618fflp but it doesnt spray at the low pressure. But wierdly you feel like your spraying at low pressure due to the speed and control.
Depending what machine you use those higher sized fflp and lp tips were great as it ment you could use bigger fans and not set your machone to full pressure
You're spraying the ceilings in the wrong pattern. You're supposed to spray perpendicular to the direction the light enters the window to make lap marks less visible.
the ceilings got sprayed 2 coats in each direction. the video edit hadn't shown the entire job

It's easy when you're painting ceilings and walls in the same colour and paint type. Now show us with 2 different colours
All you do differently is spray all your walls letting overspray hit ceiling. Then next day mask walls and spray ceilings. Theres videos of me spraying colours and white ceilings

@@sprayaholic Thanks. The music was not bad, but if I can't hear you then I might as well listen to a music channel. :) and then later the music volume jumped up. Both of these situations requires fiddling with the volume on my device, if multi-tasking then may not be worth watching. But I like the content and concise info. :) I think some that watch a lot of content would like to watch one or more and not have to change the volume or have you voice lower than the music... or close.

@@wheres_bears1378 i can mask up the room while yourr still on the first cut in. Bare in mind you have to cut in 3 times. Mist and 2 . You only need to tape once. On a job this size it would save days if not over a week easy. Every jobs different and i dont spray all the time but knowing when to becomes a money maker and a back savers
