my tip for MV is everything except bass on 10. i do all my stuff with everything on 10 except bass is at 0 and it really makes a difference. bass will emphasize the lower notes vs the shrill highs you hear on all the records
Well done video. Ive been saying for years that Mac is the vibrato guy, not chorus. Salad Days and Another One in particular are more chorus-y than 2, and since SD blew up I can see why that was the go to assumption. Also, YES, 2 is very dry. His vocals have way more reverb than anything else on that record. I love how dry it is too you can almost feel the tape heads rolling on that album. Fun fact about the Boss CH-1, if you are using it mono, put another patch cable (that doesn’t connect to anything else) in the other/stereo output, which I think is B. You will get a super sweet vibrato sound out of it. And the funny thing about that trick is it is almost the exact same way Mac describes his “chorus” sound, or what he thought was chorus. The pedal thinks that other output is going somewhere and sends that shimmering sound there but keeps the warble. Also, I am surprised how good of a MV tone comes out of that practice amp. Although imo I think the biggest factors in a MV tone are the tuning and a relatively cheap single coil guitar. Well, and an assload of spring reverb. My squier affinity strat has a spankin MV sound to it. I’ve spent a long time studying the MV tone. Yes, Ying Yang is his best work.
please do makeout videotape lessons. these are the most accurate sounding and looking covers i've seen and i've been tryin to figure a lot of their stuff out. Please consider
man this came at the perfect time, I’ve been working on a Makeout Videotape inspired record with my band for a couple months, been using my Sundance clean fuzz with a danelectro spring king to get pretty close, but my fender tweed sounds way to brittle, I have a little 70s teisco practice amp im gonna try cranking like that laney, thanks for the vid man, not enough people talk about MV
I missed out on the same sort of teisco for 50$, the lady on FB sold it to some one else and didn’t update the listing. I’ve found a kingston with those style pickups that has been re done and sheilded for 200 im definitely going to buy. Also shout out to you for the MVT tone and the phaser i thought i was crazy or the only one who noticed
@@vanillafranco I have bought the guitar and played it for a bit to this point. It has the Jangle sound. I do have to be careful, it's got that thing where you actually have to press lightly on the strings or you'll bend your notes. I own a Mini Strat with the same sorta thing. I would not call that an "issue" because you could learn it and use it as a tool. It is very cool looking and the neck is amazing. I did pass my honeymoon phase, I've switched back to mostly using my Strat but it still is my new second favorite guitar. I really want to start clearing out some guitars in fact, I really could feel just fine with my Strat and the Kingston. Honestly this Kingston also gets some really deep, bass tones as well. It's like a Jazz Master or Jag with three pickups because it has a switch for each pickup. Maybe I'll upload a demo, I just get embarrassed by my playing.
I think Makeout Vid used to max every knob on a twin reverb amp, I maxed out bass and mids, but treble was about 7. Volume was high enough to ‘crunch up’, but not totally distort. Hope that helps :)

It really depends on the amp but typically the treble can go very high, some amps it can be maxed out, mids 3-4-5, and enough bass to keep it warm sounding without over darkening. Hope that helps! If you can’t get it how you like it hit me up on Instagram DMs

But I'm sure he still uses tape. I mean, that dude has a fricking Studer Tape Machine. I'm pretty sure it's not just standing there as decoration. You're saying that he exclusively uses a PC now? If he uses the pc at all for recordings than maybe for mastering or maybe monitoring, but this dude got some awesome desks so I assume he uses the PC strictly for mastering.
