dave m creativity and good songwriting will always trump expensive gear
I’ve noticed from learning about these people over the years, so many of my favorite artists and bands just used whatever was cheap and sounded good at a pawn shop. Trying to recreate it those sounds is fun but when it comes to creating new music I find it very difficult to stray from what’s traditionally thought of as “good” gear and tone.
Definately i once thinking im stuck with just 5 pedals now ita been a year since i buy last pedal and i still discovered something new
Foreal. I have a couple of buddies who own huge pedal boards and vintage gear when all they do is play covers. It's kind of funny to look at.
except most people don't own lots of highly sought after famous vintage synths, classic guitars and amps. his pedal board is quite pedestrian though

I personally tend to use the chorus pedal when it's the chorus of the song, and the flanger when it's the flangerus of the song

@@gsl649 vibrato means the note goes slightly up and down.
chorus is an effect that doubles your guitar sound and adds vibrato+slows down slightly the second guitar track(i think not sure tho)
if you take out the main track and keep just the track that the chrous adds you'll get just a vibrato effect.

Well he's putting a bunch of flavors together to get his signature tone, so you're partially right
Mac’s always been authentic in his music production. He doesn’t know all the terms and answers but he can play and get into a creative mood and experiment with different instruments and tech, and I think that’s all it takes to make something worthwhile.
Doing any more than that would be a mistake :)
This is the reason why he's one of my favourite artists. Dude is my inspiration
He’s also crazy talented. I’m obsessed with production, and his records sound AMAZING from an objective standpoint. Especially This Old Dog and Here Comes The Cowboy.

I can read lips pretty well (partially hearing impaired), so for anyone wondering what he said when it bleeped out which synths are his new favorite, he said the "Casio CZ series." These are phenomenal synthesizers that use a very unique sound source called "phase distortion" to create and dial in wave forms. I restored a Casio CZ-101 about 2 years ago and while it's sort of a pain in the ass to program, I still love it! Hats off to you Mac!
Have a 101 too, you can get insane sounds.

@@kevinkruelle1492 The 1000 is the same that 101 with "normal size keys", the 3000 has chorus and split, the 5000 have chorus, split and a sequencer

@Sander van Buuren I love Salad Days too. Matter of fact, all of Mac's music. I just feel like 2 is the most accessible album, good to start off with. And then TOD is probably his most mature one and shows a slightly different side of him.

Ben No, Mac smokes a lot of cigarettes and they’re aging him beyond his years. He looks older than he is.
I think a lot of it is from the booze and touring diet. Stress, booze and cigs will do a number on ya. He's looking better these days than he did a couple years ago though. I wish him the best.
Seems like a pretty normal guy actually. Not obnoxious at all, just saying it how it is. Even though he has a ton of hype, I actually like his music.
My brother saw him at govball, he was the only musician to setup his own stage.
That is why his records musically sound so good to the ears. He is someone who is looking for a sound that he likes, and is trying re-create when listening back to the sound via headphones or speakers.
A true musician/artist. maybe even a audiophile.

I love how he reached to what he had and just experimented to create his own sounds. You should do this with Kevin Parker or Stu Mackenzie. I would like to know how these musical geniuses approach shitty pieces of gear to make magic.
I think Mac is a really underrated player. His right hand fingerpicking technique in this video is something to be desired.

Great story for this fella. Doing what he loves and he's good at it. I wish him all the best and I like his stuff. I'll tell ya though...I'm him in reverse. 32 years playing guitar...I can almost play the full set of cowboy chords cleanly. The penny never dropped for me. Chased a teenage dream to record music...have all the gear...but no idea. My stuff sounds like garbage.
