    And yet I've just watched a video by Yvan Lacroix who says the complete opposite - a DA is faster at cutting, and a rotary is better for finishing.

    Rotary work is really a practiced art form. Once you get the pacing, pressure, and correct posture down it's actually quite simple. Even more, being a good rotary polisher will make you an even better orbital polisher, because the basics are the same despite the orbital having a higher threshold of safety and lower barrier to entry. I recommend looking up some of Paul Dalton's older polishing videos, he always focused heavily on rotary technique and he made it look really smooth and easy.

    I first used a machine to polish in 2006 and that was a Porter Cable DA. I moved up to a rotary a couple of years later. I switched to the Rupes LHR’s 3 years ago but still have my rotary which I use for spot pad work now ( can’t justify the price of a nano!). I’m really glad I can use a rotary because used properly a rotary will correct in half the time. It’s a handy skill to have even though I rarely use it.

    My first job at 16 years old was washing cars at a local car dealership. $2 an hour :) and one of the jobs I had to do was detail some of the worst paint finishes on used cars. I learned how to work a rotary polisher using 10-inch lambswool pads. The first thing I was told was don't burn the paint. So you kept the pad moving with even constant pressure. Rotary polishers can be your friend once you learn how to use them.

    I've been painting cars for 25 years. When I started painting and buffing cars back then a lot of painters didn't want to show you how to paint, buff or anything. but I use a rotary buffer and I can finish faster then using a da. I tried a da and it's good to know both but I just don't have the time to do both. If you really learn how to use a rotary buffer u will be able to do everything with a rotary a lot faster and time is money.

    I think to the question about why would you pick up a rotary instead of a DA is because... in some cases i’ve come to a panel that won’t correct easy, it’s tough as hell, pick up a rotary with a wool pad and hammer in and you can get it done faster, more efficiently, less work, using rotary and DA i think they both benefit each other, like finishing down with a DA is easier then rotary, but if you have time on your side finishing down with rotary for me is more rewarding, i feel the paint is that bit more sharper ( personal preference)

      Obsessed Garage That’s why I measure each area I do. For me in terms of safety there is a lot of misunderstanding in the rotary world, it’s still a great tool and is far less expensive to run overall in the right hands. Less vibration, and you can remove less material at a lesser rate at a lower speed.. I still use all my machines, but if I have something that is hammered... rotary cutting all the way. Less hammered? Then LHR21, LHR75 and my ibrid...

    So does this mean that the dual action is still the ideal equipment for beginners in polishing? Because you don't need to apply a bead for every pass you make on the panel. I see it that way because the DA seems to be ideal if you're compounding or polishing a whole panel like a door as you just put 3 dots and then start polishing again. I think the rotary is ideal for some tight areas where the DA might accidentally hit it. I really haven't tried polishing because I don't know if going straight to the rotary as a beginner is a bad idea.

    On 2 steps I always use rotary because of more gloss and the haze/hologram is easier to remove then the haze from a DA if you ask me. But it's a question of religion and skill set

      There really isn't much of a need for a rotary any longer unless you are doing boats or really heavily messed up paint. DAs get the job done in less steps, is easier to learn, and has none of the side effects of the rotary.

    Summary :
    A successful detail business that’s pumping out a lot of cars in most cases you will find a artist inside with a rotary in his hand. I thought I could use one pretty good, but to really see a 30 yr experienced business owner do a complete correction and even Jeweled the paint with one in about 2/3 the time it would have taken me was seriously impressive. But there really is no need for 90% of the people using polishers today to learn the speed and effectiveness of a rotary due to the fact they are hobbyist or it’s just a part time income. It is a dying art sadly, thanks to evolution. The fact still remains, in the right hands on the business side it is faster.

      In my experience a DA polisher cant take out deep scratches like a 1000 grit scratch, but a rotory can. With a DA you need to sand up through some grits to get them out. Even the Flex. I work in a custom car shop , we do correction and finishes on world class cars daily.

    Awesome video Matt. I’ve always been a big rotary fan over the years and the Dewalt and Makita are great tools but they’re just too heavy and I don’t need anywhere near that 3500 rpm range. I’ve been itching to pick up a Flex PE14 or Festool Shinex, but that price is just too far out there for something that has been on the market for over a decade. I’ve been mulling over the LH19E for a month now, this might make me pull the trigger, it looks too sexy!

      Hey WaxMode, you ever pick one up?

    • @WaxMode
      @WaxMode 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bbdetailing9123 I did, and I like it! I've really become a big fan of Rupes' latest gen triggers, great ergonomics on this rotary and you definitely feel that significant weight difference compared to the full size Dewalt and Makita when you're working with it. It's not the most quiet polisher, my Dewalt edges it out on that, which is relevant to me because I frequently go out to the garage at midnight hours to pull the rotary out and run random tests. No complaints from the neighbors yet but it's always in the back of my mind to work as quiet as I can. The LH19E beats both the Flex PE14 and Festool Shinex on price which was a major driving force in me pulling the trigger for a mid-sized rotary, aside from videos like this one!
      However, the reality now is the industry is going cordless. I just saw some videos on the new Dewalt cordless DA and mid-sized rotary, so I'm back to mulling. I'm beginning to realize just how much of a nuisance cord management is during polishing, it's not something you think is an issue until you realize there are options that completely eliminate the inconvenience. Hopefully we see a bunch of additional cordless polisher releases at SEMA this year to give us more options.

      @@WaxMode after picking up a Dewalt and Makita at a store, I was like, too heavy. I picked up a Flex rotary and was sold on how small and light it felt. I love it, but don't use it much. Still need practice. I am surprised to hear you say the Rupes is less expensive. Did I read that right. Rupes cheaper than a Flex? Oh wow. I bet those triggers are awesome!!
      I seen a post about the cordless Dewalt on IG a bit ago and been searching the web for more info. Finally saw a video today. Workshop Addict, I think. He used the DA version. As much as I like Flex, I dont have the funds, or enough jobs coming, to be able to pick up the cordless machines. I would live a direct drive cordless Flex!!! But with Dewalt being priced cheaper, I'm kind of glad I haven't picked up the cordless Flex. I have some 20v Max batteries so I could save money by buying the tool only. Hey Matt, I bought a new BMW, I noticed on the roof spoiler there are some longitudinal scratches on it that look as deep as what some swirl marks usually get. I ran my finger nail across them and it seems like my nail catches on some of them, is this too deep to be repaired by polishing? I read online that if your finger nail catches on it, its too deep and needs to be painted? What do you think, should I contact my dealer?

    • @ObsessedGarage
      @ObsessedGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The finger nail trick is a really good gauge to use to know how to attach the scratch. If it is that deep, I wouldn't go after removing it. I would simply try and improve it. That is generally when I would break out the 3000 grit sand paper to working on improving it.

      Mark Klein no way rotaries have their purpose. It’s what I first learned with.

    There’s no need for rotaries in 2023 it’s not the 1990s anymore with the Mk3 15 I can cut just as much or EVEN BETTER than a rotary and guess what NO HOLOGRAMS so you don’t have to do as much steps meaning you will always cut and finish faster and just as efficient as a rotary if not more efficient I threw all my dewalts away no need to create more work when you can do correction and correction only DAs and forced Actions DAs Il take anyday over a rotary that you will truly never master

    Just watching some old videos .. Matt you're lucky you weren't around in the old days, your inability to listen and wanting to direct and control would not have worked well for you.
    You really need speak less and listen more, there is more time talking about what you're doing than time on the actual polisher.

    This guy Matt thinks too much about processes and how do things I've been a detailer and a proffesional wet sander for 30 years and I will never use A da for anything a rotary is the way to go I've spent years using it daily. a da is for beginners I always cut and finish better with rotary even on fresh paint

      Sounds like it’s time for you to learn something new. Doing something for a long time does equate to doing it right.

      lol, that's the only part of video I was interested in, dang, I just tried a large wool pad and taped off the trim, and the polish flew up on the windows, the roof, the hood, wipers area, sides of bed of truck, front fender, I was only buffing a small part of door,. ya I'm a noob. The rotary worked amazing on the paint!!

      Yes you need to stay away from edges and trim Then you be just fine ,get a smaller rotary polisher for those areas
