FUEL PUMP 1990 CHEVY G20 VAN CHEVROLET CHANGING INSTALLING

  • These old tbi systems need a steady 10-13 psi to run the injectors and regulators correctly. If you get lean codes after long extended drives and/or have hard starting due to low pressure, this is how you change the fuel pump in these old vans/pickups.

    Thanks !! Quinton... I know how this Job Goes personally. I just wanted to Share My Unique Experience, that occurred with my 90 G20- Fuel Pump... After Parking one Day, at the Curb, with a Half full Tank of Gas, the Van Wouldn't Start.I don't know Why I Immediately concluded that the Fuel Pump Needed Replaced. Basically I didn't hear any Fuel pump Whirring Noise with the Ignition on.So, I dropped the HEAVY TANK, Carefully Poured out as Much Gas As I had Gas Cans, Open Buckets To save the Gas, making the Tank Easier to Manage.I pulled out the Fuel Pump, thought about the $100- to- $150. Purchase coming up, so I tested the Pump with 12 volts and it Whirred, this Made Me Think .... To check for voltage going to the fuel pump...there was None...!
    I already knew all of the Fuses were Good... So I deducted that the Power Wire from the " ignition on "
    To the Fuel Pump... Must have a Break in it- because 12 volts was not being Delivered to the Pump...!!
    So , I did a " Mickey Mouse"
    Quick Fix- to get the Van Running Again : I ran a taped jumper Wire , tapped into the License Plate Light Wire ...to the Fuel pump hot wire....Now The Pump only Pumps when the Parking/ Headlights are On. This is a Good Anti- Theft System as Well...!! The Van Only
    "Cranks "without the Parking Lights ON...( while I'm Driving...also, yes...). I did Have to struggle through the Tank/ Gasoline Replacement. But I did not have 20' - 30' of single run wire to Tap into an Ignition
    " On " Source... I have Been Comfortable with this Quick Fix For 8 months Now... I do Hope to Wire it back up Correctly Someday... Stringing the Wire Securely... Front to Rear. I hope this Gives Some Insight, Thoughts to Others With this Scenario. BillinL.A.

    Two words for ya to consider -TRAP DOOR - Locate where pump is and cut a "C'" flap through bed of van or truck .Easy to drop in new pump and if it goes again you can drop new one in 10 minutes on side of the road .

      Great idea, lots of folks can and do do that, but I have an RV style bed and electrical setup in the back of my van that precludes wanting to put holes or doors in the floor. Thanks

      Exactly what I did. I just took my grinder out and cut an access door in the floor of my van. I riveted the metal with a bracket and all is well….

      @@insidelookingout6480do you know where exactly to cut? I have the Vandura version. It has barely been driven for 10 years but now needs a fuel pump. Considering the difficulty removing the rusted bolts I'm thinking that making a door will be easier.

      I ran a job placement ad for a cameraman. I offered them 20% of the money I get from making these videos and all the free mac and cheese they can eat. Since zero times 20% is still zero, I only had one very hungry guy show up to do the job, and let's just say he didn't make it.

    I have a different kind of van but I had a similar problem where I had to drop the whole tank to get to the fuel pump.
    Well I cut out an access panel then bolted down the slightly larger piece of metal than the one I cut out. Next time I won't have to drop the tank.

    I gotta replace my fuel pump on my 91 g2500. Do i really need to remove my hitch to drop the tank? (Its just like yours) Or will the front strap screws be good enough to drop?

    • @cycleforlife2170
      @cycleforlife2170  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Honestly it depends on the tank and the hitch and the angles. I needed to move mine for sure, but you may get lucky.

    • @dlarremore
      @dlarremore 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @ctguy591 not feasible on a 91. By the way I didn't have to remove my hitch. Once loosed, i had enough wiggle room to work around it

    wouldn't it be easier to cut a hatch in the back of the van right over the pump and not drop the tank?? just sayin . . . but removing the tank would allow a deep cleaning to the innards. Nice work though, you'll have a nice reliable van to drive! (nicer than my G20!) hats off for that! - question which model of transmission did you install, just curious . . . ?

    • @cycleforlife2170
