The Kramer sounds like when Eddie played on the David Letterman show, in the 80s, with a Kramer neck. You’re right, the EVH sounds more like the first and second album, from 1978-79. But the EVH nails the EVH tone I’ve been hunting for, my whole life. So, I pick EVH for tone. And agree, the Kramer is more 80’s. But I have an all white 80’s Kramer Pacer for that.
Great video brotha 🤘 Kramer was my first real guitar in late 80s and I ham a huge evh gear and guitar fan so this is like asking me to pick a favorite child!!! I might have to give a little edge to the Kramer!!! Lol
The EVH because of the EVH pickup but the EVH guitar itself is built out of basswood whereas the original was made of ash which would make the tone even more authentic.
It’s just confirmation bias. You are saying EVH has the authentic sound when in reality the authentic guitar was the Kramer and EVH brand wasn’t even a thing. It is exactly like driving a new Chevy and saying it rides more like a 68 Chevelle than the actual 68 Chevelle.
It's like trying to pick your favorite kid...It's a no win but they both sounded great. I do have the 84 Barretta reissue. All maple. Banana headstock, which I found to be on the heavy side for me, and since I was the guy playing it, I carefully sanded it down to look more like the Charvel Model 2 headstock, which for me made it easier to play without all the weight. Works for me anyway, and looks kinda cool, and still one of my most versatile guitars. All red. Don't care about the stripes even though they look cool. I just love the tone. Pics upon request but it looks and feels perfect. I've even played it in church...when I used to actually go.
exelent video got 1984 a few years back waited about 8 months $760 bucks, white freaked out when i got it, one peice maple body + maple neck action set as low as possible, floyd level with body, kramer logo going to paint the back and edges of the headstock so it looks abit bigger love tis guiyar every day we all play at differen't levels but most important is have fun.
I’m not a fan of the J B the Wolfgang pickup sounds better to me! Something about the low e string on the J B does not sound good to my ear! I have a 84 Kramer I’m going to stripe. I’m going to put a Wolfgang pu in it. Thanks for sharing!
That damn Frankie…. Everytime I hear one, the tone is damn near perfect. I just ordered the EVH 5150….maybe I should have gone with Frankie? I may just have to get both now. I love the 5150 looks…..but that Frankie! 🔥 And I do think the Kramer 84 sounds more authentic now than it did before.
Both guitars sound great. The Kramer does sound brighter. I think the Kramer is more recognized as the 80's Era with the hockey stick head. Did you start with a white Kramer 84? Then you did the paint job?
Cool although this isn’t the Tone Zone your hearing in the Kramer, it’s the EVH pickup installed in place of the TZ which was previously installed in place of the stock Duncan JB. The JB that comes with the Kramer is too bright INHO. (Great for VH stuff but limiting if you want to bust into a variety of classic hard rock other than just VH. ) In the previous video I did it WAS a Tone Zone. To answer your query , this age of bright ash wood and drop Metal active pup guitars the TZ is a classic, mid and punchy solution to waking up tired guitar tones. I’ve also found the Bareknuckle Nailbomb a bigger brother to the Tone Zone.
I watched this both looking at the TV (I cast videos to my TV) and then without looking, just listening. There were time’s when I thought the EVH sounded better and others when the Kramer sounded better. To me they were so close and both sounded awesome, but the cost difference may be a factor in someone’s decision on what guitar they choose. We are not all made of $$$ I would be stoked with either. And it’s sounds like the gut who made this video likes the feel, weight, playability of the Kramer and he Obviously knows how to rip on guitar, so he’s not someone who doesn’t know what he’s taking about. I will take one of each please 😆
It comes down which neck you like...i like the 41mm. Vs 42mm. Eddies USA guitars have 41mm which is what he uses. The lower ones and 5150 have a 42mm for some reason. For me the 84 with a 41mm wins
EVH is easier to play but the Duncan and overall character of the Kramer wins -plus evh probably has the worst most lazy logo of any brand .... evh pickup is alright but always sounds like buzzy noise a bit, its got that new fender pickup quality to it which no one likes, and its expensive
EVH guitar hands down. IMO...drop half that crap and plug direct into that head...dime everything. I was using a setup close to what you're using until i saw Jacob Deraps basically kick it old school and go direct
Lol, lol your telling me how to plug in??! Come back when you can play jazz no distortion into an amp.. Have a great day! th-cam.com/video/nA5H70E2Lro/w-d-xo.html
Impossible to say one sounds better than the other as long as the pickups and electronics are comparable. It's so subjective.
Love both! I have the franky myself. Great footage! Always a fan, for life and beyond! Keep rockin’ !! 🤘🤘
Thanks & Cheers!🎸😀
I wanted the Kramer to win but the EVH sounds much better.
Check my other video Evh vs 5150. The Kramer comes closer with a different amp and a tone zone pickup

Cool and thanks for the feedback! Any of those EVHS will get you on the zone. 🎸
Another trick Eddie did is to lower is volume on the Kramer. He had a treble bleed cap on the volume also to get a tighter sound.
Great video brotha 🤘 Kramer was my first real guitar in late 80s and I ham a huge evh gear and guitar fan so this is like asking me to pick a favorite child!!! I might have to give a little edge to the Kramer!!! Lol
Hey great comparison, sir. I think I’ll pick up a Kramer ‘84 because I’ve always wanted a single hum strat.
Thx!
Kramer 84 isn’t a Strat.
Wow. You shred, bro. Seen both videos on this topic. Good ear - I, too, prefer the EVH for Van Halen songs.
Cool. Thanks for the feedback on the vids and playing. Appreciate it 👍🏻🎸
Hey man! Thanks for sharing this comparison…..I appreciated it 🤘
Welcome🎸👍🏻
To my ears, the EVH has the closer sound to the recordings.
The EVH because of the EVH pickup but the EVH guitar itself is built out of basswood whereas the original was made of ash which would make the tone even more authentic.
Tonewoods for electric guitars is a myth.

Great playing ,you nailed the tone , I like the Evh tone better myself 🤘🏻🎸😎
Thanks!😀👍🏻🎸
Well done brother!

Thx. Using a cab in logic.
This was a awesome. Great guitarist.
Thx!🎸
i love kramer sound and distinctive shape
🔊🎶🎵🎸 I like the Kramer it's brighter, nice amplifier and pedals

That’s actually not a Frankie it’s the black and white stripe painted to match. Any Evh stripe model will get you there.
Both guitars sound great. The Kramer does sound brighter. I think the Kramer is more recognized as the 80's Era with the hockey stick head. Did you start with a white Kramer 84? Then you did the paint job?
Actually started with a red Kramer. Funk Guitars usa did the paintwork.
@@BrevSullivan Hey Brev, thanks for the reply. What was the fee for the paint job?
@@eyeblossom You’d have to contact them directly for that info
Yep, the EVH "is" the EVH tone but the Kramer is "tight" . What's the deal with the Tone Zone ? I really like it and have one, like to hear it !

Awesome video 🤟🏻 Does the Kramer have the same size frets of the EVH or they are smaller ? I prefer the JB over the EVH wolfgang by the way
Frets about the same but neck feels way different because of the compound radius on Evh compared to Kramer which is straight 12”
@@BrevSullivan Thank you for the fast reply👍🏻 I knew about the radius difference but if it really has jumbo, i can live with it
Both kick-arse.

EVH for the win. Didn't think it would break that way.
Brev love what you do !!!
Thanks!!!😀
Vote for frank but it could be just the pickup oh and you nailed the brown sound
Thx!
Thanks!!!
Nice job!!!
84 all the way!
Your tone sounds great. I like both. How long have you played and practice VH songs?!
thx! Played them a lifetime
Cool comparison! The Franky sounds better, because the JB pickup ruins the tone, most of the time! Kramer looks cooler!
I think the exact opposite on the pickups.
Both sound good, in a mix either would be acceptable. Both are killer guitars….
I liked the EVH.
Both are putting out great sound, but the EVH sounds more true to the OG tone.
Honestly, the Kramer sounds better. Nice playing 🤘🏻
EVH for the win!
Could you tell me who painted the Kramer. I have one and I want to get it done like yours.
Funk guitars USA Hollywood Florida. 🎸👍🏻
i like kramers take on the body, gave a not full strat look, cant explain it just different
That’s because Eddie’s 5150 Kramer was not a Strat.
The Kramer has more mid to my ears I’ve got the black and white EVH which has the same pick up as the Frankie
Sounding Killer!!!
Thx!
sounds identical to me
What Kramer model did you use.
Kramer the 84, current reissues. Preferably white base if your gong to paint it.
What is the Kramer actually called ? Is it called Kramer 5150 or something else...I can't seem to find it on the internet.
Kramer the 84. Bought mine stock and had it painted, preferably get a white base.
@@BrevSullivan Thank you for answering:-)
haha you're the man
The Kramer sounds more liked to recorded tone. The EVH sounds way too thin imo.
Ill go with evh 5150
EVH is the winner! The Kramer came close.
No, it's 1982
Your a great guitarist but no one can play like Eddie. It's all in the hands that man had electricity in his hands.
Don’t think anyone was claiming to play like Eddie here but thanks.
EVH

Kramer
evh i think is better in eddie's tone.
EVH guitar hands down. IMO...drop half that crap and plug direct into that head...dime everything. I was using a setup close to what you're using until i saw Jacob Deraps basically kick it old school and go direct

And the kramer is cheaper.
Zero question about it.....basswood and alder are different tonally.
