Queens Wharf doesn't come remotely close to Marina Bay Sands. For Brisbane it's a big thing. But by world standards it's pretty standard. Brisbane needs to think bigger if they're going to be a leading destination, and bring big money to QLD. They're already stuffing the Olympics. I'm very close to saying, time to give the Olympics to Sydney. But I'll reserve that for the time being. The government needs to stop bailing companies out. Obviously the costs benefits didn't stack up, but they went ahead with it anyway. Given we're headed for recession, I don't think it's going to be this grand destination for Brisbane it's been talked up to being. It'll be at least 5 years before that comes to fruition. People are stopping spending because the cost of things is just getting ridiculous. That's going to dramatically bring down the benefits of Queens Wharf, because if the locals aren't spending much money there it's going to be very difficult for it to remain viable. It's not like Brisbane is an international tourist destination where tourists will keep it afloat. So it will be difficult for it to remain viable in the short-term given the economic environment. However, over 10 years it'll become a destination. But no the government should not bail them out. Unless they're willing to forgo a majority share to the government. It's time our governments stop bailing out these companies unless the business is willing to give majority share to the government. For too long governments have been throwing taxpayers money at corporations to keep them afloat, continue cutting corporate tax rates, and in return these companies continue to rort consumers and pay zero taxes while we the taxpayer bails them out every 10 years. That's money that could be better spent on our ailing health system, educating our kids, building more infrastructure, or building more housing supply. If these companies can't survive the business environment then they shouldn't be in business.
2:23 they are demolishing the freeway?? If so, thats GREAT for green space and opening up this side of the Brisbane river waterfront for more walkability. Also offers the potential for more pedestrian connections between the two sides of the river given there is no freeway to worry about. HOWEVER, I do worry about the plan to handle Brisbanes congestion if this becomes the case. The road network is a mess and public transport options aren’t exactly the most effective rn. Hopefully they can do something to combat that, otherwise this would be GREAT for promoting walkability and improving quality of life.
Silly for the freeway to be going through the city from north to south, and west to south, when almost none of the users are going into the city. This through traffic is taking up valuable land and making it a more dangerous and less pleasant drive since the road is accommodating for everything built around it. Definitely should have a dedicated roads (not street) to move these people, without going near the CBD.
It's just a casino, (with hotels, shops & bars/restaurants)! Brisbane already had all of those, lots of which struggle. How can introducing more of the same improve things? Won't it make it even harder since more of the same business types will mean the dollar spend is thinner across them all. Better hope for a massive influx of tourists. Governments of the last 15 years really haven't been able to come up with much at all.
The Star has a great potential to succeed and is the highlight tourist spot it’s amazing view of the city from the deck, to be one of a spectacular representation in tourism industry that is an absoulute “Australian “ citizens owned. But why does taxpayers has to be responsible of helping them to survive as a private entity, if the Government is willing to help , then isn’t it a good suggestion that it the Government and the people of Australia should also have a privilege to benefit and to have a greater advantage than others. Hope that it’ll will all workout for Australias ‘ big future potential economy growth. All the best
North Qld. and Tasmania have casinos. They and maybe others might be interested in having a casino there if Star does not stay afloat as a business. As far as i know, Tasmania still has a casino running. Might have a look at that Brisbane place sometime.
Gold Coast also has a casino. Not so far for them to put some casino operations into Brisbane. Prefer roulete and blackjack myself. However, they tend to mostly have machines at the Gold Coast casino. Feels like a pub type operation on a large scale. I prefer to see roulete wheels and blackjack tables being run by people with a look of class to the place.
When Sydney's Star City Casino opened in 1997, it was an unmistakably vibrant Aussie venue. Over the years it morphed into a Chinese-oriented cesspit... stinking of dumplings and overwhelmed by near-comatose patrons sitting silently at gambling machines. A truly horrible venue. Hopefully, Star has learnt something in the meantime & will not go down the same alienating path with Queens Wharf.
What a load of crap. No one’s thinking that the boy who cried wolf, just as they open a multi billion project beside the government offices. It’s perfect timing for Star. As the government can’t let it fail.. what about the plan to return any support.

far too much tax payers funds directed towards sport, games and gambling. Reminds me of a small situation a little while ago which failed for the same reasons.
Let a community club take over similar to West HQ, Panthers, and other similar venues in NSW. The building assets could also be moved across to the state investment fund so it pays dividends for decades to come. The gambling profits go into the community rather than shareholders of a controversial, poorly managed, failing company.
I am very dissapointing with its outer look , the fact that Brisbane city is getting filled with black glass buildings. They might be great in efficiency in some ways but,.. looks just boring and no character at all. I am not very fascinated by that building.
I agree. WHY WAS IT NOT ANOTHER performance arts centre? I want a ticket to wicked at southbank. I have to book MONTHS in advance. More performance arts centres for plays would be SO MUCH better, then useless casino's NOBODY is going to use.
@@Lukas_Teo theres more to it than the neville bonner bridge, a new world class sky deck/observation deck. The building itself is an international landmark, Sokyo for dinner was amazing and im sure the other restaurants will be great when they open, the retail shops, the heritage buildings that have been restored, the treasury will now be a cutting edge Griffith Campus in the city. Investments, residential tower for people to live, tourism multiplier + millions of people annually, the green spaces and park underneath. You can't just percolate this master project down to a public bridge. This will also inspire the next developments in Brisbane. Does anyone apart from Mel have a positive outlook on the future!? 😂
it is an absolute waste. I predicted that many of the restaurants would die out in a month because sadly, thats the effect the cost of living crisis has on daily lives. The CBD has died out. We even lost Myers state flagship store. Much of the wintergarden is also dead. Brisbane CBD in general has not recovered from the pandemic and is a ghost town. And spending money on casinos is stupid. As an anti-gambler, I believe the place shouldnt of been built as a casino in the first place. I do support the redevlopment of the space but to have a controversal casino as the anchor tenant and owner, well thats one problem. I dont think the place will close. At worst probably the casino will close and hotel but you will still be able to walk through to the neville bonner bridge or wander to the upper levels if you dare. The sky deck would probably stay open. It is our very own marina bay sands.Brisbane in general isnt well known which is why if we want to be known well we need to advertise ourselves and get the 2032 olympics right. Find it kinda ironic that the premier doesn't want to spend money on a new stadium yet will hapilly throw out a life line to a casino during a cost of living crisis
I believe Myer will enter the old Treasury building once the Casino has cleared out. I don't know how it will do there, as Brisbane lacks pedestrian connections through the CDB. Hopefully, they put a pedestrian bridge across from the new Star complex. While I am not a gambler either, there is value in having a tenant like this anchor the complex. While most towns and cities have shopping, not many have casino's. If you live anywhere in regional Queensland other than Cairns or Townsville, the best you've got are the pokies at the pub. A Casino provides a big tourism draw card that you wouldn't get from more retail. Hopefully, this is a launching pad to provide other entertainment-related amenities, as the CBD has been lacking these immensely. Personally I would love to see a Koala sanctuary or something of that nature more in.
@@shadowhuntagamingnope, they won’t. Just sold to Griffith University, and in any case Myer would not move from one high rent old building to another even potentially higher rent older building needing extensive renovations to suit modern retail environments.
If you’ve been to Marina Bay sands you’ll know Queens Wharf is not even close to the same level of impact, retail, restaurants, etc. I think you’re right about the restaurants, sadly. Maybe with the casino they should restrict it to those with a foreign passport like Singapore does.

Let's all remember the state Labor government in 2016 introduced reduced trading hours for ALL Queensland nightlife venues costing thousands of jobs to increase the value of Queens Wharf 24h licence. The state has sold its soul in so many other ways for this project, let's hope it all wasn't so we could have a casino for 2 weeks.
Yeah, it's been a scummy project from the beginning. I actuaply like the non-casino stuff but that's only a second thought as a way to try and funnel people into it. If they wanted Brisbane to be a lively fun city they never should have killed off the fun (with lockouts)
@@priceprice_baby yeah there's nothing like a casino to corrupt a state government. Look back at the free passes given to Star by Mike Baird and NSW Libs and of course we saw what that government was like via Gladys Berejiklian. Qld Labor sold themselves in the exact same way. It's not only the lockouts and reduced trading hours they introduced to prop up this project. There's been other things given up for Star, for example the busiest bikeway in Queensland will now be "shared" with a pedestrian concourse with meandering tourists wandering out of Star into the path of commuters. This is akin to building a shopping center food court in the middle of a freeway. As soon as a pedestrian is hit or nearly hit we all know that Star won't be made to made changes, but instead riders will be forced to dismount and walk. That will lead to less people using the bikeway and in turn going back to driving and adding to congestion.
I am struggling to put food on the table. Why should the government bail out a private gambling company that only entertains those who have so much money to spend on unnecessary leisure?
This is already hurting hospitality in Brisbane, ita going to reall ravage what few independent hospitality businesses owned by Australians and run by locals.
No,don't bail out a business that chose to not provide its financial statements that it required to operate. This failure comes straight after being discovered it had engaged in bad financial dealings. So failing to prove they've stopped behaving badly is the opposite of a reason to help them keep operating. As for all their claimed benefits? Their main income is from our gambling losses. We can be better than this.
Went there on Father's Day, walked over the uphill bridge from SouthBank, bugger all shade , everyone will get drenched when it rains.... It's worse than a suburban Westfield Shopping Centre. Very little visible Directory signage. The staff weren't given clear directions as to their job specs., the bars were understaffed. A sea of thongs & Tee shirts, instead of shoes , collared shirts & dresses. Blazing hot in the after noon sun at the Sky Deck. Had a quiet drink in the Live Wire Bar...... As they say, " It'll be nice when it's finished ".
It’s not going to close. If went into receivership it would be placed in the hands of an administrator and a new license appointed. Crown would be the obvious choice. It’s not governments place to use tax payers money to bail out corporations. Small business gets nothing and hospitality at present is doing it tough, with no government assistance. NSW was right to wash their hands of Star, the Qld government should stay clear of it as well.
No way if they turn their backs on star they turn their backs on any future investment. Who would want to take the risk of building a mega project knowing the CFMEU will bleed them dry with no support from the government?
Spend the money on roads ! Close the casino, OR? Give us all a tax break and keep it open, personally I will probably only go there once in my life so I wont miss it if 😢😢its not there! How can we let someone that is a billion dollars over budget carry on with more tax breaks?

No, didn't step foot in the last one, very rarely go into the city which is dead and this is another brutalistic reminder of how modern "architecture" is no match for those cities with a rich cultural past.
Maybe if Star Casino was not guilty of money laundering (fined $100 million), they wouldn't be in this dire situation. And it gets worse if you really think about the sort of people who they were money laundering for. As far as the tax issues go - we all pay our tax so why should they get a "get out of jail". I have no sympathy for a parasitic casino.
Not sure the closing of Star in Brisbane is the QLD governments problem... or the unions problems either... rather the company took on this project and now cant afford to run it because of their bad business model... You failed to mention any liabitiy for STAR in your monologue
Popped in for a look today while I was in town. Very unimpressive , tacky RSL on steroids vibe. Poor workman ship every where you look. No atmosphere very dull. It’s like an IKEA flat pack casino
I live just at roma street. Work down the road at edwards street. I can't see myself ever going there... Why a casino? We already have one right next to it! Should have made it another performance arts centre! If I want to go see a play. South bank is BOOKED out for months in advance. I think to myself. What if something comes up in 2-3 months time and i can't go. Waste of money. The treasury was ALWAYS empty. Another performance arts centre would have been a MUCH better choice then another, unused casino. Brisbane aren't much for casino level gambling. Everything is to expensive for the average person to go blow a thousand on the tables. Expecting to make millions off tourists gambling, is a big gamble. If it had plays going... Maybe I would have seen wicked already AND ACTUALLY visit the eyesore.
Bloody ugly. I miss when Brisbane wasn’t at the mercy of developers, nothing but glass boxes with no architectural nuance, can’t see the sun everything in shade and the bloody city is like a giant wind tunnel. And you can’t compare any city in Australia to Singapore that is a great city.
Private business needs to stop thinking that the taxpayer will bail them out. Look for another Private investor and if they won't touch it why would taxpayer. Oh ya if forgot the shiftless politician who thinks he own our money
I hope they can get the financial support by the government, it's a loan, not a handout. The massive taxes already paid by the developer, the taxes paid by the building contractors already makes it a no brainer to support this project. The government will take in billions in GST from the hotel , the food and Beveridge taxes , the salary taxes and of course the gaming taxes. Plus of course the extra revenue coming in from abroad that would otherwise not hit our shores. It's a tax generator, to our advantage.

Hopefully they can do something to combat that, otherwise this would be GREAT for promoting walkability and improving quality of life.
the ultimate plan is to make it a tunnel
Silly for the freeway to be going through the city from north to south, and west to south, when almost none of the users are going into the city. This through traffic is taking up valuable land and making it a more dangerous and less pleasant drive since the road is accommodating for everything built around it. Definitely should have a dedicated roads (not street) to move these people, without going near the CBD.
No, they are not. The waterfront is developed as in the graphic, but the freeway still exists.
Great Video!
If the restaurants and bars close shorty because of overhead costs, it will look like q ghost town
Maybe the cfmeu can bail them out.
Only if the CFMEU officials get their cut I guess?
Back door payments first buddy
It's an eyesore of a building. Hopefully everything is sorted out soon, though.
Let’s open it to all the homeless people that can’t afford rental accommodation or get a mortgage. Gamblers be dammed.
The queen street mall is dead.
Im there at work every day and its packed with people?
No one is ever going to do a major project in Brisbane again. People need to remember this job kept pumping ahead during COVID
I'd agree with your concerns on major projects, certainly not easy to commit >$1b on a mega project.
Queen's Wart !
Tourist stayed away from the Paris Olympics people don't want to go to these cities during the Olympics. Very few cities want to bid for the Olympics now because finally politicians have realized they bring no nett benefit
Who wants to visit a city in lockdown?
Don't forget the cost of law enforcements and bollards.
There are about 15 cities considering bids for 2036 Olympics.
far too much tax payers funds directed towards sport, games and gambling. Reminds me of a small situation a little while ago which failed for the same reasons.
Let a community club take over similar to West HQ, Panthers, and other similar venues in NSW. The building assets could also be moved across to the state investment fund so it pays dividends for decades to come. The gambling profits go into the community rather than shareholders of a controversial, poorly managed, failing company.
why does gvt always bolster casinos?. they're the most criminal soul destroying places you can have
good question. i would say because of the large amount or revenue they make from tax. they are not concerned of the harm casinos create.
It will be a huge revenue collector and have great flow on into the mall
The government should get equity for bailing them out.
Any one know what will happen to the land cleared for the airport Auto mall?
idk, but it could solve the olympic stadium debacle.
I am very dissapointing with its outer look , the fact that Brisbane city is getting filled with black glass buildings. They might be great in efficiency in some ways but,.. looks just boring and no character at all. I am not very fascinated by that building.
Gambling is a parasite on society they can take their casino and leave.
im looking to look past the negative sides of it if we get cool infrastructure and progress brisbane :)
Yep, gambling is not good for society.
@@jamessteelyThe only public infrastructure is a (draw)bridge into the casino. A shiny big new gambling building is not progress.
Personally I would love to see a Koala sanctuary or something of that nature more in.
idiot
@@shadowhuntagamingnope, they won’t. Just sold to Griffith University, and in any case Myer would not move from one high rent old building to another even potentially higher rent older building needing extensive renovations to suit modern retail environments.
If you’ve been to Marina Bay sands you’ll know Queens Wharf is not even close to the same level of impact, retail, restaurants, etc. I think you’re right about the restaurants, sadly. Maybe with the casino they should restrict it to those with a foreign passport like Singapore does.
@@aussiestallion69 true, Marina bay sands is on a much larger scale and I have actually been there.
I driver Uber. Never saw a drop off point there. Howard Smith Warf is already a mess for Uber and Taxi drivers. Difficult to make money if nobody can get to you
Let's all remember the state Labor government in 2016 introduced reduced trading hours for ALL Queensland nightlife venues costing thousands of jobs to increase the value of Queens Wharf 24h licence. The state has sold its soul in so many other ways for this project, let's hope it all wasn't so we could have a casino for 2 weeks.
Lock-out sucks, 3am close sucks, anti competitive if the casino can stay open!
@@elsimon89 2am close in non "safe night precincts"
White elephant
I am struggling to put food on the table. Why should the government bail out a private gambling company that only entertains those who have so much money to spend on unnecessary leisure?
This is already hurting hospitality in Brisbane, ita going to reall ravage what few independent hospitality businesses owned by Australians and run by locals.
Mate haven't got the money to go there plus a person has shares in Star I know it's a up in the air
Exit 'their' systems one by one and you will be happy ❤
Love your content Mel good stuff
Thanks @hunterthompson6574 much appreciated!
Casinos suck balls and ruin families. No need for the Queensland or New South Wales government to bail these gamblers out.
As they say, " It'll be nice when it's finished ".
it still looks half built doesn't it. the architect must have been on crack.
The 2032 Olympics will be an utter embarrassment and hurt not only Queensland’s tourism business, but all of Australia’s.
Spend the money on roads ! Close the casino, OR? Give us all a tax break and keep it open, personally I will probably only go there once in my life so I wont miss it if 😢😢its not there! How can we let someone that is a billion dollars over budget carry on with more tax breaks?
Blaming the unions? You dropped to new lows.
Yeah they shouldnt have even been allowed on site in the first place. Of course the CFMEU was going to run the project over. More fees that way. and more traffic jams...
Look at him, obviously he was going to shill LNP talking points.
Major wishful thinking in your part. Comparing Brisbane to Singapore is a very long stretch.
I am outraged that their financiers have let them get into sooo much DEBT that WE are expected to bail them out from.
What a shame no-one from Qld can afford to go there
Do the Army acquisition of the Nasams system.
Oz with 27M souls over a vast land trying to be some big shot with the most massive debts per person the world has ever seen?? Some Repo merch will buy this swamp for pennies in the dollar and rename it Starless in Stress
God, we need a new government.
I agree. However, the current Liberal alternative is MUCH worse. The only people who will benefit from a liberal win are the coal/energy industry to gain back their 0% tax rate status... No real great options.. Who else we got. THE GREENS? Get rid of all the current parties. We need a completely fresh start.
No, didn't step foot in the last one, very rarely go into the city which is dead and this is another brutalistic reminder of how modern "architecture" is no match for those cities with a rich cultural past.
River cities are boring. Brisbane has always been boring. There’s nothing there, nothing.
more buildings oh yess
Tax payers expecting something that’ll benefit them.
The government: let’s build a casino for our rich friends.
Its a same thing, but new building
Taxpayers money to bailout a gambling company. Surely not!
Yeah, but it's kinda ugly.
Add the constant rain to that previous comment.
Who thought it would be a good idea to build a giant pair of shorts, anyway?
I wonder who the major shareholders are of this gambling pit.
I don't like the gamblor monster but now it's here it's too big to fail
Brisvegas.
A casino as the most iconic building in the city? Forever Brisvegas, aghhhh :/
they are already failing 2032 this wouldn't be a surprise if this fails
Bloody ugly. I miss when Brisbane wasn’t at the mercy of developers, nothing but glass boxes with no architectural nuance, can’t see the sun everything in shade and the bloody city is like a giant wind tunnel. And you can’t compare any city in Australia to Singapore that is a great city.
OK Stan, how much did they charge you for the cool-ade
Private business needs to stop thinking that the taxpayer will bail them out. Look for another Private investor and if they won't touch it why would taxpayer. Oh ya if forgot the shiftless politician who thinks he own our money
The Queensland government will help them cost them $3.6 billion to build but now they broke
It’s magnificent hope it doesn’t close!!
new subsriber . the corruption is worse than pre Fitzgerald Inquiry.
Bloody casino's, who needs em anyway
I hope they can get the financial support by the government, it's a loan, not a handout.
The massive taxes already paid by the developer, the taxes paid by the building contractors already makes it a no brainer to support this project.
The government will take in billions in GST from the hotel , the food and Beveridge taxes , the salary taxes and of course the gaming taxes.
Plus of course the extra revenue coming in from abroad that would otherwise not hit our shores.
It's a tax generator, to our advantage.
Gst and PAYE goes to the federal government, not the state. Payroll tax is what the state gets.
Brizzy wants to be Dubai? 😂
bad timing people haven't got money to waste,
Gambling is a scourge on society, those who work in the industry are parasites
It's purely money laundering. Casino looked assed on the inside noway is that 2billion
Yall should visit it and see how underwhelming it is…😂
