What Will Australia's $368 Billion Nuclear Submarines Actually Look Like?
What will the $368 billion nuclear powered submarines actually look like when Australia receives them in the 2040s? And what can the Virginia class nuclear fast attacks submarines do? Australia is purchasing three of these submarines from the USA so what are we getting for our money?
In this video, I’m taking a look at the submarine deal that has come up as a result of the AUKUS alliance.
Australia’s decision to acquire nuclear-powered submarines as part of this trilateral partnership is a significant shift in defence strategy, with far-reaching implications for national security and international relations.
But what exactly does this agreement involve? How do nuclear-powered submarines differ from conventional ones, and why are they so crucial for modern military capabilities? We’ll dive into the technology behind these submarines, exploring their advantages in stealth, speed, and endurance, and why they’re seen as a game-changer in the Pacific.
The AUKUS alliance has sparked intense debate both domestically in Australia and internationally, with supporters claiming it will bolster regional stability, and critics warning of an arms race in the Pacific.
Join me as we unpack the details, implications, and controversies surrounding AUKUS and the new nuclear-powered submarines. Don’t forget to subscribe to stay updated on global issues and the stories that shape our world. Leave your thoughts in the comments-I’d love to hear your take on this game-changing development in defence and diplomacy!

Many experts, & I would say almost all, would disagree with the fact that nuclear subs are the most stealthy
Very tactical Melanie
I actually don’t mind which of the stadiums they choose. Just happy it’s not QSAC
The Gabba as the main stadium rebuild plus other venues to be developed to accommodate all events. Luckily cross river rail started years ago!
Victoria Park with a roof. Keep the Gabba for test cricket. You can’t have test cricket in a roofed stadium.
great news. about time
Australia can just buy and use Chinese submarines. Recently, Australian news is surprised that Chinese submarines can operate underwater and keep reporting it as Chinese submarines 'sinking'.
A waste of money the usa just wants to use Australia as a arm of thier military with Australian taxpayers picking up the cost.China just has to stop buying Australian iron ore and australia is stuffed.Australia should scrap this deal
200 billion over priced, must be pay back to the American government
I want one of those southern cross Boeing shirts that’s awesome
Long range subs intimidate neighbours who in turn respond with buying l9ng range weapons to attack us. We all end poorer and more fearful. Short range conventional subs deter attacks on us without making our afraid.
SSS AUKUS will be basses on the UK next generation SSN. They WILL NOT be based on theUS Virginia class. It will have a UK reactor passed on a US design with UK technology. It will be built in the UK, it will have a US combat system and have a VLS for SSMs. The Australian units will have US torpedoes but the UK will probably use a UK weapon. The sonar is likely to be derived from the UK kit found on the Astute class. It will likely have an electric propulsion system. It is likely to be double hulled design, with the light outer hull there to provide extra stealth through hull form and acoustic mediation. It will be coated in aquatic absorbing materials and have a pump-jet . It will have 'X'form tail fins. It will closely resemble the new Dreadnought SSN but smaller and shorter.
We need to buld a aircraft carrier for some f35s in our navy
Nuclear powerd submarines are the best in the world Austraila made good desision
If and when they arrive, will autonomous underwater vehicles render them obsolete?
Autonomous Underwater Vehicles are generally electric, so they have the problem of recharging. However they are a valuable adjunct to manned submarines. Australia is a leader in AI generally and has 3 large heavyweight production prototypes. Apparently they are well thought of by the UK and USA and Australia’s first heavyweight “Ghost Shark” is undergoing trials with them in Hawaii. th-cam.com/video/Qypp63Lp1V4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=aPqQ4UiwMuLQFsMb Not much is known about their capabilities, but the RAN must be feeling confident. In August 2024 the Australian Government and Anduril reached an agreement to co-fund initial preparations for “Ghost Sharks” to be produced in large numbers in Australia.
For 368 billion dollars....Australia could have 3680 HSwMS Gotland class silent deisel submarines.......maybe 2 nuke submarines.....that's what they are designed for. Nuclear missiles. Or maybe a carrier?
Nuclear is so good we ought to be using it ashore rather than so called "renewables." As for the Subs, like base load electricity, we need them now, not in lest 2030 or 2040s.
Manned sub's. Will probably be out of date. New designs drones more drones. 😅
They will take the money and then they will ask for a lot more! And if you don't agree with them you won't have the plutonium to run the submarine or any help for maintenance. All that in hope that America economy doesn't collapse one day otherwise goodbye nuclear submarines! 😂
Olympic Stadium at Northshore Hamilton makes sense since the project site is right next to Brisbane River where lots of mega construction material and equipment can be brought in via barges & vessels from ANYWHERE in the world !! We need a NEW MEGA Sporting & Entertainment Complex to rival Sydney and Melbourne - can’t keep playing second fiddle to these two venues. We owe it to current and future Queenslanders !! 😊
That's great but US has no capacity to produce and sell 3~5 nuclear powered submarines to Australia within 2035.
The fact that australia wants 8 boats is alraedy ridiculous as major players like britain and france only have 7 and 6 hunter killers in service says the dumb wallabies are being ripped off and will end up with old stock of virginias and astutes and thats a fact if they are even lucky enough for that...will still charge you massively for it though £££
The Pacific Ocean is a big place and China has a big navy.
Aukus subs will start being introduced in the late 2030's 😂😂😂 fucking dream on more like mid 2040's
Im all for military spending IF it is for Australias national security! ... However this is not the case here. The only reason we are spending all this money on these subs is to support the US in its war against china! And the same reason why they are upgrading the port and will Dock US and UK subs here as it is strategic to launch an assult on china making us a direct target. And yes we may be a non nucular country but we also have a dont ask dont tell policy with the US when it comes to us weapons here for example nucular capable bombers at austaian bases with the intention of being used for china while they tell us china is the agressor LOL ... we are being dragged into yet another US conflict all to for america to maintain global control and US hegemony once again far away from the USA so they wont be effected bit we certainly will fighting a war we have absolutly no chance of winning... But as.long as qe have weak men leading this country with no plums betweens theor legs to stand up the America they will continue to controll us as they do now! ... You also forgot to mention that they can walk away from the deal at any time and there nothing we can do LOL GREAT DEAL!
I believe Australia should have the best in all services not just one at the moment we decommission equipment before we even get a replacement which puts Australia in a very dangerous position. It's about time Australia went Nuclear in Navy also with Nuclear power stations to create cheaper energy that will create new jobs with highly skilled work force. Far to much discussions on a replacement Submarine since l believe 2012 with billions spent nothing to show to the Australian taxpayers at all just more cost. Australia 🇦🇺 was also looking at off the shelf Japanese Submarines as well as the French Submarines that l believe were Nuclear but Australia 🇦🇺 wanted Diesel hence cost over run to the Australian people as well as the added cost to get out of the deal as well as the decad3s of cost involved buying the French Submarines. The big thing Australia has to look at go back to the out break of the 2nd World War Australia 🇦🇺 had nothing we even imported fuel we have no heavy industries or very little all gone, it's industry that makes weapons of war Australia has very little now just like before the out break of war. Countries that manufacture weapons will supply themselves first those that don't will have to wait, some of the ADF equipment was made in the 1960's and our ADF are still using them far to out of date for any modern day war, we cannot give away without the replacement here not on order, as l said if war breaks out Australia cannot count on anybody to supply us a fact. TH-cam had a documentary on Factory's of War that clearly shows those that can manufacture the most will win the war we have very little nothing left of our Automotive industry as Australia has become an importer with exports of mineral wealth and grain crop's. A lesson Australia 🇦🇺 learnt at the out break of war after 1945 Australia became more independent now thanks to the Green's & Labor they are gone EPA closing many with unrealistic EPA regulations put on manufacture plus the massive amount in energy costs.
Some will look very like US block V Virginia class attack boats and the rest like UK Astute Class successor Hunter Killers. I.o.w. 1) the best SSNs on earth for land strike and stand-off attack of enemy surface formations AND 2) the best SSNs on earth for successfully finding, identifying, tracking and eliminating all and any enemy submarines.
I pay tax in Australia so I am paying to defend me from the Chinese Military. I own an IPhone so I am also contributing to the Chinese military. Go figure?
Have they been tested in the Ukraine?
I don't understant why we keep buying vessels with smaller magazines. We bought the Hobart class with 48 VLS tubes, as opposed to the 96 on the Arleigh Burkes and 32 cell Hunter class that will also and despite having recently bought Tomahawks, we refuse to buy Virginias with the tubes to launch missiles. The whole reason we're buying nukes is because we operate far from home - that is to say far from reloads. Why are we not buying the boats with the biggest weapons fit, even if we don't full the tubes now having the capability now would make operational and tactical sense. We've also just said we're going to be buying Tomahawks - that means fewer torpedos or mines on the SSNs if we don't get VLS tubes and fewer ESSMs/SM2/SM6 on the surface vessels because some tubes will be carruing Tomahawk. And there are other weapons that the MK41 can accomodate that are currently not in service with AUstralia, but that could be bought into service pretty quickly if we needed them - assuming we had the spare tubes to carry them. If the military appreciations are correct and China will have the capability to kick off a conflict from 2027 onwards, shouldn't we be buying as much capability as we can? Tomahawks are really the only longe range stirke the RAN will have, shouldn't we build/buy boats that can carry as many as possible, even if we don't fill them immediately. The only real reason - apart from cost or polictal stupidity not to do that is if that spact hat the missile tubes would take is used tp provide a more useful capability. It blows my mind we keep buying vessels with "modest" magazine size, in an age when we expect massive saturation missile attacks, drone attacks and will probably be fighting thousands of KM from a secure port where we could reload.
I think we recently and maybe still only have one mission capable Collins. It would seem to me to be worth it to bring the LOTE program forward, instead of spending millions ro remdiate the current issues for a year or two and then pull the boats apart again in 2026. And yes it is important to note that nuclear propulsion does not mean nuclear warheads. But conversely it should be mentioned that conventionally powered vessels can and do carry and launch nuclear warheads. E.g. a Hobart class DDG could launch a nuclear warhead if we had them. I think this should be added to the public discussion to help the public understand that there are at least two contexts for the use of the term "nuclear" in reference to warfare, especially naval warfare.
Not a chance in hell that the traitorous apartheid albo will allow Australia to have any effective military equipment. His actions prove this with projects cancelled. budget significantly cut and the military wokified. All to please his Chinese masters.
The cancellation of the French contract has been one of the best chinese operation. The Australians will never get any subs. The are s..ed 😂
Can the Ghost Bat receive AAR?
Australia needs to bring back in natural services training again to bring up the Australian armed forces up again the government keeps taking away everything from our armed services every year but Albo won’t bring back national service training because Albo is to weak without the Chinese having something to say about the Australian armed services trying to stop everything in Australia
After Trump rejigs it,who knows?
In a perfect world, we would not need these. The world is far from perfect. It is nieve to think Australia is not at risk. We should not forget the lessons of the past and just how vulnerable we are. These are well overdue.
Like this will be going ahead now. Should have stuck with the French subs.
@jakatta69 why would it not be going g ahead now
Submarines are an out dated platform.. If it was up to me i would cancel the deal with the Americans. Yeah we already have the Collins class sub so i would just use them but at the same time i would never throw large amounts of money at neither. We could be spending the money on a better platform in protecting Australian remember these Nuclear subs cant even operate in some parts of Australian waters but the collins class can .. that's a very risky move. Also remember woth Nuclear subs the most expensive part is decommissioning them , why do do you think the Australia government is keeping that secret
Americans make the best nuclear submarines. BUT Americans are skittish allies, they betrayed the Syrians, Kurds, Afghanis, Georgians and now Ukrainians. You simply cannot trust any American, especially this Rump govt.
There is so much info in this video that is wrong. The design for ssn-aukus wont look anything like the virginia class, the sub design for aukus has been worked on way before aukus was a thing and its a british design. Rolls royce will be building and designing the reactors for the subs and shipping them to Australia and i highly doubt the mk48 torpedo will be used as it will be decades old when the subs launch and the uk doesn't use the mk48.
Uuh... why does Australia buy this older submarine class. The US Navy will be procuring a new class of nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN), called the Next-Generation Attack Submarine or SSN(X), in the mid-2030s. The SSN(X) would be the successor to the Virginia-class SSN design, which the Navy has been procuring since FY1998 and need to be replaced seeing its based on 35 year old tech.
For that sort of money the flyscreens on doors and windows should be free. Thay do keep the fish out
Operating subs and building them are totally separate issues . We could support and base nuclear vessels in Australia without operating or buying them , while having a fleet of conventional subs to complement our defensive capabilities . For timely delivery of such vessels we should get them built initially and rapidly by a major shipbuilding nation ( not China ) . Of our current 6 Collin’s class submarines only 1 out of 6 is operational. Do you think the AUKUS design vessels which have yet to be even designed , will be any better ? What do we know about nuclear power ? Zero .This is a 368 B dollar political fiasco / photo opportunity that might only ever be delivered after any impending war in the south China sea , off into never never land . It is a totally inappropriate use of defence expenditure , orchestrated by a confederacy of dunces , for whom the actual defence of this country is always of secondary importance - secondary to words , appearance and gesture .
What a sad joke, the Australian government couldn't run a piss up in a brewery.AUKUS subs are a stunt to fob off the yanks for 10 years, then the project will be cancelled, like all the other defence acquisition.Billions wasted? Too bad.best hope is Trump aborts this deformed strategic foetus before too much time and money is lost.Australss best chance is waterproof a poker machine and send into towards China with a keno ticket on the front. The pokies always win and cause a lot of damage. Cynical? Nah.realist.
I hope $368 billion submarines have enough bedrooms for thousands of homeless people Albanese created by hyperinflating rent. 😂😂😂
Block 5, block 7, its all a guess this far out. It may not even happen.....
20 years too late
will the deal continue under Trump? or will they meet that price given everything with the F35s lol and what happened to the original stated british built brand new class sub then to be built in Adelaide? total bs we were always paying for rebuilt decommissioned USN boats rebuilt, refuelled etc in US yards spending all the money in US yards. total bs on this how can we man and deploy sufficient boats with ratio of one able to deploy to two in after previous operation maintenance or in major refits. we havent been able to man Collins with a third of the crews. Cant use foreign sub crews due to security rules from the US. less truth released on this by both parties in power than the LNP policy on nuclear power.
this deal is actually a scam of USA. The cost of submarine actually 4.5 billion with vpm without VPN it will be only half of the amount. Even if there giving training to Australia and giving future maintenance infrastructure to operate. the cost will only be only 10-15billion for one submarine. But now the unit cost of one submarine will comes around 70 billion Technology transfer is also a scam. USA is only giving technology how to operate this submarine. Not even how to repair the submarine. If anything unexpected thing happened to the submarine the submarine need to be send to USA. The biggest disappoint in this contract is if USA need this submarines in future conflict for defend national security against any other country like China North Korea or Russia.USA have full rights to stop delivery of this submarines to Australia and even the money Australia is given can't be returned to Australia. End of the day if USA have any conflict than Australia is not going to get any submarine or the money Australia already sent to USA. And also If Australia invest 20-50billion to develop a nuclear submarine in 10 to 15 years they can develop one nucleus of the cost will be between 3 to 5 billion dollars depending on the size of the submarine. All the money will go to the Australian industries.
Honestly we have a housing crisis, the absolute worst mismanaged resource market in the entire world. Australia should be far wealthier than the top ten countries bar maybe two. we are suffering under some extreme inflation and we need to sort out the living standards of Australians first. Instead they're shipping in 1.9 million migrants and not paying or fostering young men to go to the trade's. We are currently short of 80k worth of tradie's and they aren't even gaining construction immigrant's it absolutely horrific. yet Hundreds of billion on submarine, 247 million on a road to the prime ministers house, tax payer funds to fly first class, 28 paedophile buearecrats that are known to the A.F.P yet they are V.I.P to announce :"because public trust in government would be shattered". Not even mentioning they are banning free speech on the internet and also already made it legal to forcefully medicate anyone if it a United Nations official. FUCK the submarines!
If I need to listen to Skynews bullsh*t or Kremlin talking points I’ll tune it in. In the meantime - it might be better to keep your fake talking points in your right wing bubble. As the old saying goes “It’s better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool, than to open it and remove all doubt.”
Look your right but our Defence Force has needed more investment for a VERY VERY long time. It’s getting what we need to protect Australians.
