- Dynasty: The Making of a Guilty Pleasure is a 2005 American made-for-television film based on the creation and behind the scenes production of the 1980s prime time soap opera Dynasty. It was broadcast on ABC on 2 January 2005.
Loved watching Dynasty. We’d go the bars every week to watch. Miss that era in television. Love Joan, Linda and John. Shout out to Joan who to this day looks amazing
I'm jealous!
For some reason I loved this movie when it first aired. I had never watched dynasty, I was a child when it was on. I loved this, as I’ve always been interested in behind the scenes flicks. I know this is overly camp but it’s enjoyable. Thanks for posting because this was impossible to find for years,
What a wonderfully camp, brilliant tribute to Dynasty.
Loved it! ❤
I really don't think this is meant to be taken all that seriously - which is probably the reason it is filled with so many inaccuracies.
You might want to read the title card at the beginning of the movie. That tells you ...nevermind.
I enjoyed this despite some inaccuracies. If you didn’t grow up on Dynasty this TV movie would give you the broad brush strokes:
- It was created to rival Dallas.
- It was silly, camp and highly materialistic.
- They burnt through storylines so quickly that the plots became more and more outrageous.
- The actors playing secondary characters could be swapped-out at any time. The producers did not give a toss.
- “Amanda” is representative of all the daft actor switches that occurred, rather than being an accurate portrayal of Catherine Oxenburg. (In actual Dynasty, it was Fallon who had a car crash whereas Amanda was pushed into a swimming pool as Oxenburg and came back out as Karen Cellini, whilst fighting with Sammy-Jo.)
- The Moldavian Wedding Massacre was a gobsmacking cliffhanger but it threw the show off its rails for good.
I think the three things this misses are:
- The writing team who turned Dynasty from a turkey into a hit wasn’t the Shapiro’s. It was the Pollock’s: credit where credit is due.
- *Joan Collins* as Alexis was a tour de force. She blazed across the show like a very attractive, scene-stealing comet ☄ . The actress in this re-telling has none of that flash or charisma, she is just whiny. The uninitiated would not understand from this why Alexis became such a global icon at the time.
- It wasn’t just Dynasty that tanked by the end of the 1980s. Within a series, all of the super soaps were CANX!
Still, at least they had some decent replica Carrington Mansion stairs, which the actual Re-Union botched!
"Joan Collins as Alexis was a tour de force"
That is an understatement my friend. She was on a whole other level.
It was silly; a dramedy!
This remake if Dynasty was rubbish. It was nothing like the original
Who are the Pollacks??
I've been looking for this movie for a long time, thank you so much for posting this.
Happy to find this. Anything DYNASTY is OTT fantastic!
I love this SO much. The triumphant final fight scene between the two big stars made me cry. I'm so happy for the Shapiros. It may not be "I, Claudius," but it was and is fabulous.
Thank you for uploading!!!
Joan Collins was that show. They should have paid her $1m/ episode. Al Corley and Pamela Sue Martin were dumb as a bag of rocks to leave the show
They were but Corley did come back for a TV movie special!
Totally agree . Joan told Pamela she was stupid to leave and she was right . Hardly ever saw her in anything after that . And yes ..Joan made the show . She deserved every penny and a lot more . Entire cast owes her a debt 😎😎😎
This is hilarious. I actually worked on this as an extra. I was made one of the gay bar patrons. I spotted myself in blue over to the extreme right, partially blocked by the tv at around 53:11. All of the different sets showing the public reactions to different scenes, were side by side in the one studio in Sydney, just decked out in various decor.
Nice! 👍
Very nice. I noticed they took a lot of liberties with the making of this melorama TV movie. Like where was Fallon and Jeff? Why not address that George Peppard and Elizabeth Montgomery were a part of the original cast? One will never know.
They got the costumes wrong! They have Alexis wearing a lot of black with a touch of white where she enters the court room for the first time , when it was the complete opposite lol
@@iononcantomascrivo Elizabeth Montgomery? As who, Krystle?
@@farrellmcnulty909 Correct.
I Haven't Seen This In A Long Time, Thanks For Putting This On TH-cam
This Is A Fairly Recent Annoying Trend. What T F Does It Mean, First Letters In Cap, Usually Followed By A Period?
Great made-for-TV film - love the humour.
I still think it's funny that "Linda Evans" is played by Melora Hardin, a.k.a. "Jan" from The Office. 😂
For a DYNASTY experience, Visit Fi Lo Li in Woodside ,California. The exteriors and ballroom were used for filming while interiors were modeled after real interiors. Visited years ago 👍 🏰
Great Performances By Everyone In This Movie 😊
The Moldavian Massacre was shocking. But the aftermath left many people cold. Only one character died, many just suffered bruises or minor wound from what I remember. And that storyline just kind of fizzled and had no long-term effect on the stories afterwards.
Actually two characters died. Lady Ashley and Luke Fuller.
Is it just me or Aaron Spelling and Les Markowitz look like your perfect , wealthy L.A 80's gay couple?🤔
Yes!!!😂😂😂
🤣🤣@@moysesp.6372
Not my kind of show by a long shot but this made-for-television movie was quite entertaining and well played. Thank you.
This is campier than Dynasty ever was or will be. Dynasty had a bit of gravitas. The real life actors played their characters with much more conviction and Linda Evans was anything but dumb.
It's ridiculous how this downplayed the importance of Pamela Sue Martin as Fallon. Yes, Joan Collins as Alexis was the center of the show. But Martin provided an earthy, realistic element to Dynasty that was irreplacable. Her leaving left a hole in Dynasty that could never be filled. It was the beginning of the end of Dynasty. They should have done everything in thier power to get her back.
Your comment is five months ago as I respond.
From what I remember, Pamela left on her own accord to make movies which was probably a mistake considering she pretty much disappeared from the public eye. Aaron Spelling offered her more money to stay but she declined which is why her character, Fallon Carrington, lost her memory and Emma Samms replaced Pamela the following season. There were so many "memories" Fallon recalled in order for the audience to accept that Emma had always been Fallon.
Hope you're doing well. Take care!
@@JESS7CA very true. And I also liked Emma Samms (just not as much as Martin). Samms was very brave to take on a role well established by another actor. Regardless, Fallon on the original Dynasty got downplayed while in reality she was too important to be downplayed as a character imo.
@@jimdursosingersongwriter9470 Well said! I agree with you wholeheartedly.
I named my daughter Krystal, because of Lynda Evans character...
In the 1980s Crystal / Krystal was the "Madison" of that era .
I have no idea what this is but it’s fantastic & hilarious, I know it’s supposed to be dynasty 😅😅😅😅but the couple that’s watching the show is so funny hosting the watch parties, even dressed up for the red wedding 😊😅
They really got the dynamic between John and Linda, laughing how he comes rushing over to her to see if she is ok can just see John doing that. They missed a trick not featuring the UFO storyline but they did refer to it lol
The Borg Queen as Alexis Carrington… imagine if those characters met!
My teen years the only show I watched and I needed to get home early on Wednesday nights from my fiance
Such good fun. And so was Dynasty!
I watched Dynasty from s1 e1 to the end & then again for the Reunion. TBH I was there for the luxury & fashion 😂😂
this was amazing
I love how there is no respect for authenticity. Heather Locklear's character was not in Moldavia for the wedding but she was there in this. It's also hilarious and a fun watch.
Thank you so much for this!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤
This Alexis resembles more Angela Channing of Falcon Crest than Alexis of Dynasty. At least Chrystal's hair looks like Chrystal's hair :)))
Our Joanie❤
My god i remember the promos for this
The Joan Collins woman was fire. Hilarious 😆
Had to watch this again! It's probably a huge compliment that it was impossible to parody Diahann Carroll, but they could've at least included the backstory scene where she cornered Aaron Spelling and asked when Dynasty would be getting its first black b*tch! 😁
RIP DC
Thanks for this I remember this TV Movie
Thanks for posting. I know this inaccurate but it was a fun movie to watch.
Way to many inaccuracies, but extremely enjoyable and brought back so many great memories and so camp. I always wanted to be Alexis/Joan and have modelled myself on her. Thank you Dame Joan, I am eternally grateful, to have grown up with you as my go to girl. One day I hope to be just a fraction of what La Collins is.
My favorite Episode the Moldavian Massacre and I got to see it again LOL
Just started my first ever rewatch of Dynasty, yes I was there the first time around & so I was happy to come across this for a bit of fun. At the beginning a voiceover warns of actual time being compressed & chagess to reality etc & they weren't kidding, if you know the storylines,. some things don't happen in the way that they did at all. Alice Kriges wigs are awful as well. Thanks for the UL ;-).
Thanks for your response, always nice to hear from another fan.
@@mediamarc Hey Marc, likewise ;-). I've just stopped watching your show at the 30 minute mark, as that's where I am in the actual show, Cecil has just died & Adam is about to turn up, so I don't want ruin the rewatch for now. Re Gordon Thompson (Adam), I always 'knew', even as a kid, but apparently it's taken him until just recently to come out, crazy & very sad, don't know the story though. I remember thinking he was lovely, saw him in interviews & he was such a nice guy. Only problem with a rewatch is that I remember it gets pretty bad in parts, especially towards the end, although I don't remember the final episodes. I'll be using the skip button a lot ;-). xx
@@Chillmax In the end he was quite an evil character, abusive and always angry.
Didn't even know the actor came out in 2017, had to look that up.
@@mediamarc Well the evil characters are always the best, that's the main reason Joan was queen of the show!
@@Chillmax True.
Because of your reply, I just read this wonderful interview with Gordon Thompson: www.thedailybeast.com/im-gay-gordon-thomson-dynastys-adam-carrington-comes-outand-trashes-cws-reboot?ref=scroll
He's really open and honest about his life and his time on Dynasty. A very nice read.
How could they botch Alexis's diva outfit for her debut scene? Sure the business suit style is mostly correct but the hat was white, she didn't wear gloves, the skirt was white, she had white slingback heels on and the handbag was also white. If they were going for continuity and authenticity, they could have at least gotten most of the clothes right. Also, When Joan Collins joined the show in season two, she still had long hair that she wore up in a bun most of the time. Alexis wasn't sporting her Karen bob until at least season four. Don't even get me started on the restaged lily pond fight with Krystle. Also, where were Jeff and Fallon?
I think because this is not a movie made for fans, but for people slightly remembering Dynasty and wanting to know the juicy details. And it's also a low budget tv-movie. The makers didn't really care if details were correct.
There are so many movies like this one about Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place and cheap "bio-pics" about Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton etc
@@mediamarc I suppose that's true. The disclaimer at the beginning admitted that they exaggerated with the facts and had to cover a great period of time in an hour and a half. Like most exposes they fictionalized some of the minor details for dramatic purposes. That's even happened with big budget blockbusters like What's Love Got To Do With It.
It moves so fast, but I love it!
The last catfight was not done without stunt doubles as they implied.
They made a huge error by showing Sami Jo at the Maldovian wedding when Sami Jo was actually in Denver and didn’t attend.
Actually Sami Jo was living in NYC at that time and didn't move back to Denver until the next season
@@JamesSedgwick-jp6hh Well i meant she wasnt in Moldovia. lol
@@markryaniversen LOL. They made many errors in this movie. They had Amanda's recast after a car wreck when in actuality that was how Fallon was recast. Joan Collins wasn't cast until well after the first season had already air and the character wasn't even named yet. The list of goofs in this film is long indeed. LOL
Something subversive was going on with Joan. It wasn't the glitz, it was what she knew about the '80's. What it really represented was tucked up with her.
omg i rmember this like it was yesterday
What’s sad is that people really did treat Linda Evans that was over Rock Hudson. People refused to sit by her and touch her. That shows what people thought of AIDS back then.
It's Satire ... just be sure and watch the Original 'Dynasty'!
thank u so much.never knew about this one
One question though, who was the BEST villain?
- JR Ewing on Dallas?
- Alexis Colby on Dynasty (dubbed as the FEMALE J.R.)?
This is not very accurate. George Peppard was the first choice to play Blake Carrington. John Forsythe didn't just do the voice of Charlie. He was in And Justice For All starring Al Pacino while voicing Charlie and John James auditioned for the Steven Carrington role but got the role of Jeff Colby instead!
Entertaining
Funny, they mentioned some of the actress/actor/ character, that wasn't even in that seen in the real show.
Dynasty II: The Colbys started with crossovers with Jeff and Fallon gone though from this re enactment?
They should make a more serious one with lots of dramatic license in the style of feud. That would be good tele. This is good mind you.
Bravo! This was brilliantly and hilariously yet respectfully done. I can't believe I never heard of the film in 2005! Particular appreciation for the depiction of Esther Shapiro and her performance-envy induced transformation over Dynasty's run. I did miss her claiming to be the original Alexis Carrington in the press and Joan Collins' cutting rebuttal that she'd need to shed a few pounds! 😁 As an ex soap writer, the reclusive, introverted portrayal of the sensitive-natured Richard Shapiro was hilariously and heart-warmingly accurate. I totally bought him asking Esther if they had to attend the gala event in the beginning and his dislike for liaising with actors! 😂 The writer's meant to have the most fun in the chain of command and be sheltered from all the behind the scenes drama of soap world. It's a shame they spread him so thin and ultimately burnt him out, but at least he and Esther walked off into the sunset with a nice nest egg, as did most people on the show. I need to own a copy of this film! 👍👍
I thought that was Ted Knight for a second lol ?
Such fun!!!
This movie is so bad it's good. They really played loose with the timelines that's for sure.
It's hilarious. It almost felt like a parody.
Love this
I bet joan hated this
And that makes me smile.
I remember John forsythe saying interview, Dynasty was way harder show make compared to Dallas and Dynasty wasn't the classic show Dallas was. I think would agree John forsythe.
Alice Krige doesn't hold a candle to Joan Collins!!
I see Esther and all I can think about is Kindergarten Cop!
A little cheezy. And it serves the creators purposes of taking a very shallow look into the creation and taping of the series. What I don't understand is only the main 3 characters and their "original cast members" were put in. Didn't Dominique, Adam, Jeff, Fallon, Leslie and Claudia also have parts that could have been interwoven into this?
Leslie not so important, but the other ones were.
And Joseph and Kirby
Holy s*** Alice Krige is completely unrecognizable!
The Joan role is so off joan was over the top and outrageous but she was also really really fanny and camp this lady playing her or the writers of this show have no real idea what Joan collins was about this makes joan look cold hard she could be but it was always with a twinkle in her eye .
She is the Borg Queen from Star Trek Next Generation
this is really interesting.
This is a flight from reality but entertaining. I mean reaaaalllly........weird.
The first two seasons were the best it really became to unbearable to watch after that. Good memories tho.
yes real drama then is got silly it was more about the fashion and hair the story lines weak and the cast turn over too fast ..
I don't like the way they portrayed Linda Evans like the dumb blonde I never believed Linda Evans was that type of person always looked at her as a strong individual from some of the lessons she learned from Barbara Stanwyck .
I do not like this film ignored that George Peppard was chosen before John Forsythe
All Beautiful Gorgeous ladies❤❤❤❤,In This Movie
28:40....God - they sure knew how to write women roles back in the day.
The show had fabulous hours and hours of glory, but they botched the end of this show, the last two episodes 'The Reunion' a total disaster, it was even a shame for what this show had been, everything was cheap and poorly written, this show had started in the scent of champagne and caviar and it ended with a bad sparkling wine and lumpfish roe
I was only 5 when Dynasty premiered so I was a little too young to watch!
This tv-film was so bad. The whole setting is totally out of the 80's
Bah ça va j'ai fait une suite de dynastie mets je peux faire la vraie Alexis Carrington était plus belle
Dynasty and the 80's were a perfect symbol of American greed and why we are the way we are in 2024. It is like looking in a time machine!
Dominique Devereux
Was this meant to be a serious film
I hope not
I seen this 100 years ago..
Notice i didnt see jeff, Adam, Claudia Kerby & Fallen (and why Fallen was cast off replaced by Emma Sams..) i KNOW BCUZ I SAW THE TRUE HOLLYWOOD STORY..
Fallon*
@@marko3108 really...
I didn't kno I was In school 😂😂😂
Fallon was there, but she did not have any lines.
Why did they try to convince the actors for the story changes?? The actors are not producers and they have contracts. They have to play according to script. They dont need to convince them, other ways that would be waste of time.
Actors go leave tv shows because they aren’t happy with the storyline it happens all the time dude
Kate Jackson left Charles angels for that same reason
Al Corley the original Stephen was upset because he didn’t want to play the character flip-flopping back-and-forth. He wanted to play him completely completely gay, which is why he wanted off the show and they killed them off in season two.
Read up a bit
@@Christian_Ada1no they did not kill him they replaced him just like pamela
Well with bad acting you can out crap the cheesy nighttime soaps. This is stinky.
They must go with what the audience wants so if they don't want the character gay then it's goodbye.......It would be rather hallarious if it backfired on them I definetly can see them shitting cement.
The original is better
Lou 😂
What happened to Fallon? Pamela Sue Martin was my favorite as Fallon. Dynasty shoulda tried harder to keep her happy. This docuspoof is so dumb by the way. So CW
It's my understanding that she wanted to leave the show, and acting altogether.
Dominique no lines 😒
Adult version
Wow, that was awful
Thank you!
What joke person did this
1:12:25 to 1:13:12 😂😂😂
Boring movie
I know people made fun out of Dallas. But I thought Dynasty was worse.
Ah je peux pas la vraie Alexis les plus belles désolé Serena voir
They jump from seasons to season in a second. Steven's new face is in V. season, Cecil Colby died at the end of II. season.
Watching this I feel sick 🤢. Very bad production
