What a joy to stumble upon and see tthis piece on TH-cam. I produced this mini-doc created specifically for the Dynasty Season 1 DVD for Fox Home Entertainment in 2005. As a fan of the series during its original run, it was a real thrill and pleasure interviewing the Shapiros, Al Corley, and Pamela Sue Martin. Producing and writing the piece was a breeze because of them. Thanks for bringing it all back. It remains a career highlight for me.
Thank god Joan Collins came in season 2 and saved the show . The first season wasn’t good and it was on the verge of cancellation. Once Joan was on I was glued to the tv every Wednesday night. I would tape it on my vcr too . The 80’s were great times 😎😎😎
Dynasty would air on a Wednesday night here in the UK in the 1980's. My mum loved the show and watched to see the legendry Joan Collins. My dad would watch to see all the young girls like Heather Lockyear. John Forsythe as Blake was brilliant. My daughter used to watch to see John James as she had a crush on Jeff
Yes, even physically , Pamela Sue Martin had the great advantage of looking far less like the average conventional TV actress than all those plastic heavily made up dolls like Morgan Fairchild and all. Another example that comes to mind is Lindsey Wagner. They brought a sense of autenticity that reflected in their acting too...Pamela Sue Martin actually still looks fine and natural in those interviews...years on.
Pamlea Sue Martin was the only actor on this show who didnt like an over the top left over from the 1950s. Her departure left a void in Dynasty that couldnt be replaced.
Remember when Wednesdays were deemed "Dynasty Day" back at the height of the show's popularity back in the very early 80's? Much like "Melrose Mondays" over a decade later.

I am rewatching the series now. I bought the 9 seasons on digital. I am halfway through season 4 right now. When I watched as a kid, I never noticed how horrible Blake was. He is the villain of the story. He SA'd Krystal in season 1. He sued Steven for custody of his son because he is gay. He banished Alexis for 16 years. He treats his family like garbage especially Krystal and Steven. He had done one horrible thing after the other. I thought Alexis was the villain growing up but she just reacts to Blake's bad behavior of her and her children.
That final scene was not Joan Collins. In an interview she admitted they just used an extra. Wearing some "old" suit from Nolan Miller's storage. And a weiled hat he created for the scene. Unfortunately the extra wears shoes Alexis wouldn't be seen dead in. She also doesn't walk like feisty Alexis...
@bonghunezhou5051 yes! I find it odd that people conveniently forget that Blake raped Krystal in the first season. Then all of the sudden he was the good guy in season two. 🙄 🙄 Racist, homophobic ahole.
Dynasty Was More Realistic Than Dallas When Diahann Carroll Came On The Show,It Added COLOR And FLAVOR. Dominique Deveraux And All Her Men,Brady Lloyd(Billy Dee Williams),Calvin Lockhart And Richard Lawson(Nick Kimball)Gave the Ratings A HUGE Boost And Increased Black Viewership. Even Larry Hagman Said It Was Unrealistic In Texas To Not Have Regular Black Cast Members,At Least They Had The Black Lady Hostess At The Bar/Nightclub That J.R. Would Frequent.
Dominique Devereaux was a dud. She added nothing to show and was unconvincing as Blake's sister. Just a Black Tramp peddling her wares. A big waste of the shows budget that could have been better spent, somewhere else. She was nothing and added nothing.
What do I remember about Dynasty from the early to mid 80s? Joan Collins, fashion, John Forsythe the Silver Fox and Linda Evans’ hair. I’ve watched it this past month at my Mother’s request to look at the fashion. We started off with Season 2 and smashed season 3. I went back to Season 1 to understand Claudia and Steven. Blake was more horrid and I liked the oil rig segments. I didn’t like how they just cancelled Bo and Walter. However, watching Alexis has compensated everything. John James was very hot and It’s a good diversion from the horrors of today. I refer to real life and television.
Dame Joan Collins and a slew of other British actresses like Stephanie Beacham, Catherine Oxenberg and Emma Samms made Dynasty what it was of its time in the 80’s, a form of escapism, as life in the 80’s in the U.K. and Ireland was so dull and boring for most people - Dame Joan was acutely aware of this and this is perhaps why she made a huge effort to make her character Alexis to shine so brightly, empowering and inspiring both women and gay men alike, even aside from the fact that Alexis had a gay son Stephen and that Alexis was the inspiration for many drag queens down the years with her unique brand of glitz and glamour - I’m very surprised that Dame Joan is not a guest judge on Ru Paul’s Drag Race and I’m sure that she has many gay men as friends who simply adore her ❤

No disrespect but, Emma Samms brought nothing to the role as the new Fallon. Pamela Sue Martin WAS great as Fallon and I remember being sad when she left the show. Emma Samms is a great actress! However, casting her as Pamela's Sue replacement was a BAD choice. I believe Tracy Scroggins would've been perfect as Fallon #2. In addition, she had better chemistry with John James then Samms did.
