I started teaching myself data analytics fundamentals in April 2023. I was rejected for a uni course as I couldn't pass the math test. But I persevered. I did the Google data analytics certificate and put my whole heart into it and went off on tangents with it, learning beyond what was in the course. I've just got a job offer from my first interview, and it's for a data analyst for the government at mid-management level. I have no idea how the heck this happened but I guess I gotta say THANK YOU. I thought, no way will I get it this quickly. But there you go! I had zero knowledge or professional experience when I started and here we are, only 5 months later!

@@danielhazard1680 I'm glad I did it for sure as it is for complete beginners and there's a lot of practice involved, which is how i learn best (by doing and making mistakes, not reading about it). I really enjoyed the part on R. HOWEVER, Python appears to be much more desired than R so potentially consider the IBM cert instead (I think that's the one that does python?). Definitely a good place to start! I did it in 3 months to cut costs (but completely busted myself with exhaustion lol)

As a data analyst something else I recommend learning is the context behind the data you’ll be analyzing. For example, if you’re applying to be one at a manufacturing facility, understand the manufacturing process (at least to some degree). If you’re applying at the corporate office of some retail chain or medical office, understand how those companies generally work etc etc…The technical skills are certainly important, but knowing the actual business pays in dividends.

Alex, I want to chip in my experience here. I was a Finance graduate, and just like you, have 0 background in data, but I do have a little bit of statistical knowledge coming from an Economics minor. I did all the things you and Luke taught on becoming a data analyst from scratch, all the projects, the portfolio, the courses, the recruiters, EVERYTHING. 3 months of intensive learning and another 3 months of job hunting afterwards, I got myself a job in an islamic finance company, collecting data of unit trust funds around the world and consolidating them into a database, constantly updating them, making analysis on them, finding pattern and trends.
So Alex, I want to thank you, Luke, and many other teachers on TH-cam and all over the internet helping me on this journey, and I'm very lucky, grateful and thrilled that I made it.

I have also decided to go in path of Data Analytics.. I have quit my job in Corporate after 8 years.. Now I am on unemployment support for 6 months already 2 months spent from those 6.. 2 months learning every single day 4+ hours.. mostly python.. like 80-90% of time is python then SQL and then the others.. Not spending any time by learning Power BI tools.. yet.. I have excel on decent level which I got from corporate work so no spending time on that too.. So I just need to master SQL and get decent on Python.. To be honest I belvie that you can master SQL in 1-2 months.. or get at least into very advanced level.. But Python guuuysss. Thats a different story.. I have alredy wrote more than 1000 lines of codes in python and still I think I have not even master the basics :/ Sometimes I start doubting myself if I am able to learn that.. but then I check my goals and I say.. I will!!! I have to :D got tired to live from pay check to pay check.. :/

Alex, Thank you so much for your series. I am looking more to a data analyst field because I love data. Your videos are giving me clear instructions on how to proceed. I am familiar with 3 of the 5 skills but found that I was lacking on them. I hope you cover something on SSIS, SSAS and SSRS. If not, point me in the right direction. I definitely like the advice on building a project and building a data analyst resume.

This was so encouraging. When I decided, at the beginning of June, to start this journey I estimated January of 2024 to be a, hopefully, attainable goal. It sounds like that's a reasonable time frame after watching this. I wish I had had more applicable skills as far as programs, technology, statistics, etc., but I am curious, a lifelong learner, diligent, and determined so I hope that translates to a good job so I can provide well for my kids.

Hello sir! That’s so wonderful to hear. I’ve been getting certified in Python and R. I took a statistics class. And data science foundations. I learned Tabealu and Alteryx. The last step is resume and LinkedIn. Data Science is a touch different than Data Analysis. Also Data Validation in excel are easy formulas you can learn. Good luck on your journey sir! As data scientist we must know code a bit stronger than a data analyst.

Hey Alex! I’ve got a question! I just finished my Google Data Analytics Certification yesterday. I’ve been working on more case studies and I’m eager to start applying. However, do jobs offer any sort of “we’ll train you more” if you show you have a good beginner level understanding or is you’re expected to just go right on in with little help?
I know you’ve said back in the day you didn’t have much technical skills but one of your jobs liked your personality and thought “we can train him”. Do you still think that is pretty prevalent today? Or is there more of an expectation, regardless of background knowledge, that you’ll come in and just take your spot.

SQL is hard, you can learn the basics in 3-4 days no doubts. Doing complicated things with SQL takes a lot more time. Make it 4-5 months min to master SQL only. Excel is tricky too. Some jobs ask for VBA and Excel, takes time to master Excel, let alone knowing the visual basic. Tableau or Power Bi. For my Power Bi certificate I had to reschedule the exam once. I didn't feel ready for it. The exam suggest that is for Junior analyst with 6 month experience. It's expected to have being working with Power Bi for at least that much before you get a professional certificate about it. It took me 4 months for the certificate btw and I barely passed it. Where you place R or Python in that short time frame? Knowing Python first, then how to work with libraries doing the actual data work, then if you need web scrapping also learning that. Just won't happen in a short period of time or at least not in a job ready proficiency.
