  • This is my opinion on the 3 key Excel skills a data analyst requires.
    Understanding the use of Power Query, Tables and Pivot Tables/Power Pivot is the starting point on your learning journey.
    Once you get comfortable with these concepts you will easily migrate to Power BI
    Want to learn more about Power Query, DAX and Power BI? Check out my book:

    I agree with you about these essential skills, Wyn.
    About Trim, I would suggest applying that step before merging the columns because it seems that in Power Query Trim does not remove multiple spaces in the middle of the string as TRIM does in Excel.

      @@AccessAnalytic it's one of those annoyances of "why is Power Query not working the same way as its corresponding function in Excel?".

    • @iankr
      @iankr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's the same with VBA's own Trim() function - it doesn't remove multiple internal spaces. You need to call Excel's worksheet TRIM() function via WorksheetFunction.Trim. Which is weird and annoying! I wonder if the two issues are connected?

  • @iankr

    Great video, Wyn. I'm slowly building my experience with Power Query. As you say, a lot of people haven't heard of it. In my organisation so many people rely on fiddly manual processes to gather and report on data, which is so prone to error.

    Excellent video Wyn, very clear and concise explanations. I remember when I first discovered Excel Tables and the power of using them with Pivot Tables. No more setting a pivot table data range to include hundreds of extra rows in case the data set grew and then excluding blanks. No more worries if I wanted to add extra columns to be used in the pivot table.
    I'm still pretty new to Power Query but incorporating it more each day.
    Haven't really started with the Data Model. Can you have issues with backwards compatibility if sending to other people outside your organisation?

      Thanks, yep Tables were a godsend.
      There’s always potential backwards compatibility issues. But the data model has been built in since Excel 2016

      Unpivot is awesome. I took 16 column by 50 row table into flat table in seconds. I can’t call it a coincidence but once I understood the power of PQ, my corporate profile increased dramatically.
