“Don’t quit” is definitely one of the biggest pieces of advice for people wanting to break into the field. Took me a year and a half of that horrible trial and error learning, quitting, starting again, and networking to finally land my DA role, and I don’t regret a second of that journey.

@@KyleWilliamsMusic1 I'm self-taught. From my experience, I would start with Microsoft Excel. Almost every company uses this to do their data analysis. Many people claim they know how to use it, but I beg to differ. There is so much to learn with MS Excel.
Another important aspect is your analytical and communication skills. If you master these two skills, you will thrive in any workplace and potentially increase your earnings.
If your starting out, don't be afraid to make mistakes, we ALL make mistakes. The important thing is to learn from those mistakes. Don't be frustrated at it though, try to chuckle at it and think back as to why something hasn't worked (problem solving).
Just work hard and never give up! Life works out in the end if you stay patient and persistent!

I use to look at jobs and think I can only use excel, I'll never be able to use SQL. Had a quick look and I've got this. Yes the first bits are basic and I know it will get harder but I will start using this in my job and learn power bi which I'm not a fan of right now. Then python but this I think will be the tricky one for me. I use to think it's going to be to hard, need to be a super programmer or mega smart. Don't put your self down people! You got this, if you can use excel moderately well, SQL will come to you. I'm not amazing at excel like some but I'm sufficient.

This hit home for me. I quit my day job to pursue a data analyst job at the beginning of the year. 1100 hours later, I am now applying for jobs and not having much luck. I guess I just need to continue at the grindstone. I learned Advanced Excel, SQL, Python, and even have the Tableau data analyst certification along with a Portfolio. This has been and will continue to be a journey.

I wish you luck, but... I already see a pattern that Data Analyst is just a buzz word, so many "job" applications end up as offers for paid "experience", courses, etc. I was following the EXACT path that was shown in the video and any entry DA job is just a smoke in the mirror for me, at least in the UK. And GOOD LUCK trying to compete in international freelancer market against thousands and thousands of competitors.

Learn PowerBi. I have used both and there is a reason it’s prefixed with Power. The data modeling capability is far superior and it’s a Microsoft product that integrates seamlessly with every other Microsoft product that companies use. Tableau is good for pretty and easy graphs, not serious data analysis.

I needed this video. I've been on the journey since the start of 2022 on becoming a Data Analyst. I would say that I'm extremely well in Excel, and I would rate myself as an intermediate in SQL (I actually enjoy using SQL). I'm actually a bit nervous about using python since I've attempted to learn using it in the past and it was just a tough language to learn. I know that a lot of jobs don't require it, but I also know that it is a preferred skill to use, and that it'll help with the job search faster. Once I'm really comfortable with SQL, Python will be my next move. Hopefully I'm able to land a job soon! I already have a couple portfolio projects done thanks to Alex and Coursera. Just needed something to kick me back into gear.

As an experienced BA, agree with you with a stack for the beginners but with slightly higher weight towards Tableau vs BI tools because of its popularity amongst businesses, at least in UK. Obviously it doesn't matter so much at the end because if one can get a handle on any of these tools (visualisation tools), learning and switching to the other is not so problematic as picking up new programming language. On a side note, loved how you pronounced languages "Java" & "JavaScript" at 04:07 with that eastern "J" 😅.

Excellent video, it actually represents how I got into the roll. Educated in something completely different and somehow found my way into data. I’m currently just over a year into been a junior business intelligence analyst, learning SQL and power bi as our main reporting software. Before we got bought out by a different company I created various KPI’s and datasets in excel so once we transitioned I was quickly offered a position in the BI team. Unless I missed this I think something what gives a advantage if it’s a internal position you are going after is to have good business understanding. I feel like it has helped me when querying data and has given me confidence when peers and other sectors have queried certain reports etc. I suppose this comes over time when analysing but I believe it was a massive factor for me to get further involved In the data analysis world. Keep up the great videos!

I really like Enterprise DNA for learning Power BI - And if I remember correctly, their "stack" of software is almost the same as yours, except that they have a 5th system: PowerPoint - For effective communication of the analysis that you've done. And given how well PowerPoint and Power BI are now starting to integrate, I'm inclined to agree.
