I just got out of the ps5 xbox sX and wanted something smaller than my main PC. I love consoles and missed the ps2 gamecube days. love the build you did.
The usage and power consumption looks low in some games. Now I did have 7700k instead of the non K, but it shouldn't be that far apart. Completely stock at 4.2Ghz all core and 70ish watts. 50W and under 70-80% usage seems way too low.
I got my hands on a batch of Dell Optiplex 5050 PCs that my employer was just going to throw out. I took one and threw in an MSI LP RTX 3050 and added some RAM and an M.2. It's only a 7th Gen i5 but I'm going to use it for emulation. So far it seems to be handling everything quite well. Thanks for the inspiration!
For me I would probably go for the Dell Vostro MT desktop with a 8th gen or 9th gen CPU to pair a bit more better with that GPU. I seen a couple go on eBay for under $200.
I done this same sort of build except with a lenovo 8th gen sff and a 4060 low profile. luckily the model lenovo I got was able to get a 450 watt OEM psu upgrade with the 8pin on it for the gpu.
Love these guys! Save the environment and make gaming more accessible. More gamers=more of a chance for otherwise "dead" games to flourish. People are still playing cs 1.6, so graphics hardly matter when it comes to finding a great game to play.
My TV PC is basically one of those HP's with a I7-6700 - 32GB Ram and 500GB nvme drive. I simply bought a 70$ CAD RTX 1050 Ti which while not the best, adequate for my use. It's a PC for Movies, netflix, prime and light gaming on a 75" Sony TV. Plays Streets of Rage4 perfectly on 4k and some other games.
i5-8500 elitedesk are just about as cheap. 2 more cores. I've got that with a 4060 LP shoved in. (undervolted to 80w, it's taking 5 watts off a SATA to 8 pin and the other 75 from the PCIE slot)
@@zeddproduction6360In the elitedesk 800 g4, you'll have to dremel a small piece off the HDD frame to fit a 4060. No performance loss to undervolting. 1% down, 1% up, depends on game. always within margin of error.
They deliver more than advertised. I got 1030 working on prodesk 400, also 1050 which should not work on 35w slot, but it works. And by the way, this is not prodesk, its the elitedesk, there is a huge difference in build quality between prodesks 400,600 and elitedesk 800.

Wow this is almost my exact same build, i have a elitedesk sff g4 with a i7 8700 and recently ploped a 3050 lp in it, the chassis looks identical I got the MSI 3050 model and it fits in there perfectly due to being shorter
By the way, you need a better CPU cooler because constantly running it in the high 70's-low 80's it's going to eventually start to thermal throttle! Maybe some new paste would help as well.
The original system I built in like 2016 based on a few of these videos has reached the limits of it's potential, a G1 with 24gb of DDR3 ram, i7 4790k (can't overclock) and like 6 hard drives plugged into it with 3 more externally, I went from the gt1030 to a gtx1630 to an RTX A2000. Most advanced game I run is cyberpunk it gets about 40-45 fps. I was considering upgrading to something newer but was thinking I should stop messing with Small form factor. But maybe I should still keep it in mind now. Even grabbing a Ryzen for 200 and keeping the A2000 might be a decent boost.
i LITERALLY bought one of these yesterday off ebay for 60 bucks shipped. 7500, 16GB, and a 500GB HDD. using it for an offsite Truenas backup, but now i'm thinking i could get one with an a380 for ripping/transcoding/streaming. how close were you to fitting that 3050 in there? The a380 is about 12mm shorter...
There is a reason that gaming wasn't on my list of reasons for the a380. Also, any game the A380 could run wouldn't be restricted by ReBAR most likely.
Dudes and dudettes, recent games above 60 frames per second? and you can also use the machine for media and internet? it's just awesome, you also need a nice setup of course, monitor, mouse and keyboard, headphones or external audio, but this is just really good, please keep posting options like these
I actually moved away from my desktop and opted for a used SFF pc thanks to watching your channel. It's a Dell 9020, i5-4690, 16GB ram, r7 450 which was all I had access to and it cost me nothing but time to set up. I can say that I have put more use on this thing that I thought I would. I don't even turn on my desktop at this point. It's quiet, does 90% of what I need or want to do, and if I want to sit in front of the TV and play console games, I just use this. Curious if it's worth the expense, should I get an A310(I'd rather A380 but it won't fit) to replace the r7 450? I felt like that'd be worth it but not sure if it was in the long run due to the CPU. 🤔I'd say the biggest downside though is the Dell bios and fan control, it kinda sucks. haha
Just looking at core and threads is a little too broad. I bought a 14100 which is a 4 core 8 thread, and should vastly out perform the i7 7700. Edit; he uses geekbench 6 I3 14100; 2458 single core 8420 multi core I7 7700; 1216 single core 3613 multi core
@@saysbadman I'm not gonna lie, quad cores have come a longggg way. but eventually, cores and threads counts for a lot more than IPC and clock speed. you're going to get hitching and stutter, even if your FPS numbers look good, it won't be a smooth experience.
Looks like the base machine is actually an Elitedesk and not a Prodesk as mentioned in the video at 0:44. It got a bit confusing because the prodesk only has 2 pcie slots compared to the 4-slot Elitedesk you have in the video. IMO it's worth it to spend a little more and get a more recent lenovo. 9th gen i7/i5s thinkstations can be had for under $200 on ebay, and the PSUs are better.
@@radii123 The best right now, IMO, is the P340 + the 4060 low profile. That's going to be more, though. A more budget recommendation would be a P330 + 3050 low profile. There's a P330 with a Xeon on ebay right now, and I bet you could offer $195 and get it.
This era CPU is troublesome for me. The i7 7700 is still a powerful CPU, I just built up an economy gaming rig with one and an RX580 8Gb, although I did some testing on it using a 2070 Super. For me, the troublesome part is in the SFF office PCs is that these are hot CPUs and these machines don't have the airflow and an aftermarket cooler isn't really an option. That said, even thermal throttled a bit, the extra threads make a huge difference. Basically for modern games, I played Starfield on it, with the i5 6500 it would run, and the FPS was decent, but it had nasty stutters, with the i7 7700 and the 580 8GB it ran at close to 100FPS on Medium at 1080p and actually ran as smooth as silk. Basically what I am getting at is that on these systems 4th-7th gen Inte, if you are wanting to game, the i7 is absolutely worth it, the price difference is tiny, the i5 will let you down. It is a shame there isn't more choice on low profile GPUs that don't require external power. The RTX 3050 6GB is a good solution, but not exactly cheap, a way better deal than what 1650s go for in my area (around $100), so there is that, and an RX6400 is just bad for the price. The Intel Arc comes to mind, but as far as I know these systems don't have REBAR, which is an absolute deal killer for Arc.
One gen higher (HP Elitedesk 800 G4) supports 8th gen, with some supporting an i7-8700K. DON'T DO IT. Even after heavy modifications I cannot tame the heat from that CPU without using ThrottleStop to kneecap it. Granted, this is under sustained load (handbrake) but just don't try using a 95W CPU on any of these SFF machines.
I am almost sure that this pc will overheat if you push it some more, especially with the increased tdp, which should be 65W for PL1. There are other 3050 LP which are shorter - for example Zotac.

Is overclocking the cpu an option on any of these machines? I don't remember when Intel locked everything down nor do I have a good grasp of software overclocking these days.
intel has had their non-k/x cpu:s multiplier locked for way over 15 years now. It was possible to oc a locked cpu with bclk on anything older than sandy bridge (2nd gen), because intel started to link more things to the bclk around that time, which killed bclk oc. There are some boards with separate clock chips that allow bclk OC on newer platforms (I've heard of that being a thing on specific 6th gen and 12th gen boards). Sadly these OEM boards are way too locked and most of them never featured a bclk adjust either.
In these OEM systems... no. Even if you installed a K series CPU, there is no way to adjust the multiplier in the BIOS. The best you can hope for to increase CPU performance is to use ThrottleStop, like he showed in the video.
How well would this fair with emulation... specifically up through PS3? Because I'm thinking 4 cores/8 threads isn't going to cut it and you would need at least 6/12, 8/16 or better to have a good experience. Am I right or wrong thinking this?
I have an i5-6500 version and with an absurd amount of customized settings for each game in rpcs3 I only managed several games running at 100% At 100% CPU and GPU usage The highest end version of this pc will do better but unlikely to get 50% of games running full speed
@@rexcatston8412 ok so how many cores/threads does your pc have? I have paired i7 7700k with 1080Ti back in 2017. To see that the i7 even limiting the rtx 3050 really shows how demanding game these days on the cpu.
The usage and power consumption looks low in some games. Now I did have 7700k instead of the non K, but it shouldn't be that far apart. Completely stock at 4.2Ghz all core and 70ish watts. 50W and under 70-80% usage seems way too low.
@@napowolf it is clocked at 200Mhz lower. 20W difference seems about right.

Better than over the top builds
The 6th and 7th gen i7 are legendary and still work great in 2024.
Yup, still using them today and play 99% of games at 60fps on high. A lot on Ultra depending on your gpu.

I got the MSI 3050 model and it fits in there perfectly due to being shorter
This will also make an amazing budget AI/ML workstation. You can run some small models on it or pytorch.
By the way, you need a better CPU cooler because constantly running it in the high 70's-low 80's it's going to eventually start to thermal throttle! Maybe some new paste would help as well.
lol a lot of the newer i9s run at 85-95c in games non stop even with a good air cooler, it's fine....
Doesn’t have Resizable bar so it will limit any Intel cards for gaming.
There is a reason that gaming wasn't on my list of reasons for the a380. Also, any game the A380 could run wouldn't be restricted by ReBAR most likely.

🤔I'd say the biggest downside though is the Dell bios and fan control, it kinda sucks. haha

Can you do a comparison video of this vs the arc a380? Debating on which one to get for my sff build
Don't go arc gpu if your board doesn't support Resizeable BAR
can't breathe in that case.. needs to drill couple of holes on the side panel
It won't overheat, cpus can run in the 90s celsius all day long

In main land Europe prices are higher than the US, il want to build something similar

Wow, since i built a SFF PC last year prices have basically halved 😅
How this card will be performing paired with a i5-8500 ? On a SFF Dell Optiplex 5060?
How well would this fair with emulation... specifically up through PS3? Because I'm thinking 4 cores/8 threads isn't going to cut it and you would need at least 6/12, 8/16 or better to have a good experience. Am I right or wrong thinking this?
I have an i5-6500 version and with an absurd amount of customized settings for each game in rpcs3 I only managed several games running at 100%

The highest end version of this pc will do better but unlikely to get 50% of games running full speed
@@rexcatston8412 ok so how many cores/threads does your pc have?
