I’m all about the Viper and I knew this would be no contest. Sure the Viper is lighter. It’s also producing less power the engine is up front. The GT may be heavier but it’s got the advantage of mid engine placement which puts weight on the drive wheels resulting in better traction/acceleration. Then there’s the more power output. Put that GT up against a 2006 Viper and there may be a significant difference
The roll was done in way too high of a gear for the Ford GT. It has extremely long gears and goes 67 mph in 1st gear. 136 mph in 3rd gear vs the Vipers 114 mph.
I've got a Gen2 Viper and let me say (with a good bit of exuberance)...I'm incredibly impressed with how good the Gen1 Viper performed. She knows what she's doing. Never a dull moment in a Viper. They're a blast to drive.

I own a Gen 1 viper and can tell you modern cars don't feel as raw as the viper.. The torque comes on fast and it can hold its own against almost anything still on the road.. Simple mods to that old push rod engine can have it screaming and at a much lower price than anything modern.. Buy a Gen 1 viper for under 40k dump 20k In it and it's still faster than the hellcat of today.

Things I found impressive. 1. A stock 1991 car (33 years old) did a 12.5sec 1/4 mile, and that's today, not back when it was new. 2. The Viper weighs under 1500kg(about 50kg less then a 2024 Golf R!) Despite having an 8.0L V10! Just shows how fat cars today have become with modern safety and comfort features

I mean how many cars are built on a Golf or modified golf platform including all varients. There has to be over a hundred, I would imagine.

For all the people in the comments that don’t understand why they raced a Viper, 14 years older than the GT. You can’t just go down to your local Hertz rent a car and get a ‘05 Viper🥴. These two cars were in the Peterson Automotive Museum. Common sense should tell you that they didn’t have an ‘05 Viper (in the museum)so they used a ‘91 pre-production Viper(available in the museum)and raced it for fun. I’m sure they understood it was down on power and didn’t stand much of a chance.

But for the price difference, you could buy 3 Vipers and take them all to Calvo to add turbos and have an insanely fast car, you can build an insanely fast GT as well but it costs a whole lot more $. Within last 5 years: Water pump Pulley tensioner starter Alt Batt Front brakes and rotors All coil packs (#3 went, so I just replaced all 3) Still rides nice, but could use a suspension refresh wait..... where am I?
Why not show a 2nd Gen Viper GTS?? At +450HP and 500Torque, it would be a much better comparison. Also, almost no one has a 1st gen Viper - they were terrible. The 2nd Gen GTS Vipers are much more come and an hell of a lot better.
This showdown is a thing of beauty. It'd be nice to see these cars a little closer in age for a more heads-up comparison, but these two match up very well.
Luna way undervalued the VIPER, as a 1992 and pre-production it’s a $100K USD (£80k) easily if not $150k (£120k). Sure if it was a high mileage 1994 £30k sounds right.

88-03 is when cars looked the best, outside of their tail and headlights, those have improved.
