I legit came here just to test my new headphones because I thought one side sounded slightly lower than the other and any other song I played I couldn't tell, then it occurred to me that this theme existed and has these left-right shifting sounds in the beginning and I also happened to read your comment at the same time as I was doing that and I literally bursted to laughs because that exact moment was so relatable 😂😂
I think that's probably the biggest reason Lavos is my favorite traditional, turn based RPG final boss. A lot of them mechanically are more of a test of how well you leveled stats (resulting in a slog when you're on target or weaker and being too easy if you're OP). Not only does Lavos come with the big grand flashy super attacks and a variety of combat support moves, he has an actual tactical gimmic capable of meaningfully deceiving an end game player. Plus, I really love how alien the mechanic makes him feel! It fits him perfctly
I would genuinely have fallen for that at first if I was using single target attacks, but I didn't get a disadvantage because I just spammed falcon strike lmao. Of course after the left and center were defeated I realized the right one was actually the core.
It's because he's evolved throught these 65 million years. He's gathered data of all fights and learned from them. He knows usually the biggest one is the main enemy, so he learned from this and learned something different.
I read somewhere an excellent description of this final phase of the boss fight. Essentially, you've broken through the protective outer shell of Lavos, and have defeated his primary form. He's scared. He's lived countless millennia and the worst that he's experienced is some temporary damage to his outer shell. You're even a threat he's faced before. Hell, Crono is a threat he's KILLED before. He won, and yet you just... keep.... coming. And so, Lavos makes one last, desperate attempt to survive: he flees through time itself. As you battle Lavos Core, the background changes to various places you've visited throughout the game, across various times. Meanwhile, Lavos is trying to trick you into focusing on his "main body," while the core of his essence is in one of his bits. He's scared shitless, and he's desperately trying to run somewhere, anywhere, to get away from these relentless warriors, and you don't give him any chance of reprieve. No matter where he runs, you follow. No matter what he throws at you, you survive. Countless millennia, countless worlds, what is different about these damnable humans?! And so ends the long journey of Lavos. Defeated by a race who achieved a mastery of time greater than even itself.
And remember, Lavos is not evil. He's just another lifeform trying to live its life. To survive and reproduce. It would be like thinking a lion is evil for eating gazelles.

While intelligent, it's main goal is to just feed and reproduce. Remember what you find at Death Peak? Also when a meteorite impacts a plant it's possible that some mass is flung back into space, impact ejecta. Lavos dug into the planet in 65,000,000 BC. It's baibehs might already be causing havoc for some other species, and they might not always be successful in fighting back.
The best part about Lavos is that it learned after those 20+ battles that the main shouldn't be the middle boss one, it should be the small ones on the sides
I love how it sounds more futuristic instead of otherworldly. It uses instruments from each time period. Drums representing prehistoric times, the orchestra representing 600 AD, the (piano?) Used for most of 1000 AD, the main fluctuating melody that sounds super futuristic representing 2300 AD, and the scream representing the day the world died in 1999 AD.
This final battle is SO FUCKING AWESOME! After a difficult two phases, met with a third one to encauplate the stress you must be under. The world shifts around you to different time preiods, taking the battle field as this final form of the beast you've set out to kill is pulling out all the stops. But what gets me the most is the vibe of this battle being different from the others, including Lavos itself. It has understimated the band of time traveling heros (and Magus), let it's guard down and allowed itself to be hurt. Even if bashing through it's shell with the Epoch, it still doesn't seem to pay no mind to you, maybe a bit now, but it's as if it was never concerned with you and that's what it's weakness. Now it's here in it's true form, a mere alien humanoid, small compared to it's giant size on the outside. It's main focus is now FULLY on the cast, realizing it fucked up with being careless and is now paniking. The main body isn't what even ends the fight, it's one of the cores it summons that it hides itself inside of. Lavos was meant to be a parasite of planets, it's trying to do what they do best and survive. The constant shifting time preiods as well could reflected the monster's panikied nature, constantly shifting time absent mindedly to either get an advantage or to just get away from the heros. ANYTHING to help it survive, ANYTHING to contuine it's primial inscinits. Yet at the end, it is killed off, and the last thing you hear from it, is a pitiful whine escaping it one last time. Was Lavos truly just a parasite wanting to keep it's race alive, or was it more sentient than one would think? We may never know, but one thing is for sure: It never stood a chance against Human History.
I really like villains that are just forces of nature and have no discernable motives beyond instinct. They're not interesting on their own but they can paint a great conflict where different parties react differently to an overwhelming power entering their world, i.e. some want to use it for their own gain and some perceive it as a threat that should be destroyed. In the case of Chrono Trigger that's of course the Zeal Kingdom, and the player's party + Magus. Another one of these that I really like is Malpercio from Baten Kaitos which you're lead to think is just a malevolent god that's evil for the sake of being evil but it is actually a much more complicated entity with a great backstory.
Thank you so much Akira Toriyama for illustrating the character cast for this timeless masterpiece. Everytime I get to the end of this work of art I'm taken aback by how much this game has changed me as a person - a genuine 10/10 experience ;)

Maaaan, I use to watch my brother play this (summer of 96) and when we finally made it here after the first lavos boss fight, and this theme hit, and using sound bits as a medley for the game, we knew…it was the end …man it was amazing.
It's mind-blowing that true Lavos is that little blob on the left that steers all this organic monstrosity capable of wiping out life on entire planet and being the main villain in the whole franchise.
I gotta say, when the title call starts playing at 1:20... it just sends shivers down my spine. Really makes you feel like this is it, you know? It's the first thing you hear when you first boot the game, then it reapears as part of the Final Battle Theme. It's so haunting, yet empowering at the same time.

I love how you think the previous fight is the final boss due to the music that plays during that fight, "World Revolution", being a dramatic and tense remix of both the villain's theme and the game's main theme, both classic hallmarks of many final boss themes. And then you win that battle and you get..._this_. Unlike "World Revolution", which sounds like a final boss theme but isn't one, this one is incredibly bizarre and techno, and yet it totally works incredibly well due to now finally discovering just how alien Lavos truly is (like, we know it's an alien the whole game, but the revelation right before the very last battle is really something else entirely, not to mention its alien appearance and the background of the fight).

There's something I found really interesting about facing off Lavos is how he's a Godzilla-like treat and pity. He isn't intentionally evil, but his existence treat the whole planet. And when we engage the final battle, we just go deeper and deeper to reveal a more fragile being. Heck, his final core is just one small thing, like he's trying to hide as much as possible of Crono and his friends who is there to slain him. It's very amusing, at same time I feel a bit pity for him.
I have played Chrono Trigger over 100 times! I can never get enough of it. There needs to be a remake. I think kinda like Sea of Stars. Not like total like FFVII. The classics are best kept the same in a way, like they remade SMB RPG, And Star Ocean Second Story

In my head canon the first phase (where you basically redo all the boss battles) was Lavos doing reconnaissance, collecting information about the enemies you’ve fought and slowly evolving into a more perfect life form based on that data. Of course he deduced that usually the biggest target was usually the one that the party would go for, so he evolved accordingly
i believe that the first phase was just lavos using the dna of the strongest creatures over the years. aside from that, legend of the galactic heroes and chrono trigger fan? hell yeah! great taste!

Lavos is basically cell but instead of taking life energy from living organisms and assimilating machines, it drains the life of the entire planet
