- Residents of Nairobi’s slums who can’t pay their rent get evicted and end up on the street. Over 90 percent of these tenants live in rented corrugated-metal shacks owned by slumlords with terrible reputations.
The slumlords of Nairobi mercilessly exploit the poorest of poor. One young man was shot and killed over five months’ rent, while Agnes Muhavishe, who tries to make ends meet by producing and selling soap, was recently thrown out of her shack after falling six months behind with her payments. Her husband does odd jobs to feed their children. Many of slumlord Peter Chege’s shacks are now vacant, as the COVID-19 pandemic has forced many tenants struggling to pay their rent out of their homes. He sees himself as a loser in the crisis.

If we are very direct, the word "Report" is written in small letter in english, so report, but in german you would write it with big letters. Yea and Kenia is the german name for Kenya. Small things
I grew up in Kayole. Not so far away but life was significantly better. We had Soweto slums down there. I now live in the U.S.A and definitely appreciate EVERYTHING because I know where I came from. I hope everyone watching this succeeds in life.

I used to do charity work in slums a couple of years ago as a student. One morning you go into a person's house and from the conversations they initiate it's like they've been waiting for you. Like there's nothing to celebrate. This Earth is hard.
Why dont they move out of the city?

They can't even afford to move upcountry where they were born because they don't own any land and so they'll still need to pay rent in an area where there's even fewer available jobs. They're stuck

The problems in Africa Feisal is multidimensional, curruption, overpopulation, bad leadership, poverty in general, bad trade deals, legislation, failed western aid programs, ethic groups tensions, great debt, weak tax systems and 100 other things. Its real sad, but I feel nothing has changed much since I was child 40 years ago.

Beside, while they are a financial burden now, hopefully one day they will support their parents when they are old and unable to work - that is how it worked since the dawn of times.

Maybe with 2 or 3 kids, she could afford to get them schooled and have a better chance of being looked after in her old age. Also, where are all the men? Maybe if men helped their wives kids could go to school.

It's why I always tell anyone who listens that crime is generated, not by some antisocial misfits, but by cruel, uncaring, extravagant governments that waste resources on projects of grandeur while at the same time dehumanising the fringe dwellers.
Crime is generated by self interest agents in an environment or finite resources. In other words anywhere in the universe where selective pressure exists.
No amount of riches will stop crime. This’s coming from a Kenyan who’s lived adjacent to and gone to this very slum.

The government is the high priest of crime judges and lawyers are the apostles and the citizens become the victims of the dynasty to break the circle citizens have to build a union of defence based on humanity

@@beauttahmwai7780 I used to live with my father and we had a house help back then. Every time we went shopping my dad would purchase extra groceries and give them to the lady. One thing we avoided giving was money. One day she took an envelope containing 1000 USD. We realized the envelope was missing 30 min after she left. We called her back and told her we needed her urgently. it took the lady 3 hours to come back. My father just questioned her, she claimed she knew nothing.
Point is when you try to be kind with some people in need, they see it as weakness and try to take advantage. I have many other cases of outrageous theft attemps.
Sorry for what happened to you but that does not make everyone a thief. They still need help

Happens in posh rental places in Kenya and also America you get evicted if you do not pay mortgage or rent and your stuff thrown on the yard .We all have to understand that conditions are not that good at the slum but what options do they have as a tenant and as a landlord? same script different settings slum or posh area

Its their fault like that grandmother with her husband ,I am sure they have acres at home her husband doesn't have any sence to tell her to move to the village ,the only people who have an excuse are those with no land in the village

This isn't the Nairobi I know but I know it exists I'm privileged and I acknowledge that and I'm deeply saddened by this seeing people struggle to get just the basic needs

I relate to this ,We have alot of kids who need help ,from school fees to school uniform,to pads , food and other basic needs generally ,i run a fries business around the ghetto and having this little kids always calling on me breaks my heart .Hugely bc most of the times they need more than I can offer .I'm calling out to anyone who can assist .help the people around you, no matter how little or big

Heart wrenching story. Our Kenyan leaders have a lot to atone to. Increased salaries for government offficials but no relief to the mwananchi
This is unfortunately how human existence has been throughout history until the advancements of 20th century. This used to be life in London, Paris, Berlin and Beijing.
The people that act like modern prosperity should be the norm everywhere are disregarding the time it has taken prosperous places to become prosperous.
My country went from extreme poverty to great wealth in 80 years and that was only achievable with help from the outside and because there are so few people here in a land full of resources that only modern technology could tap into.
I just recommend going to the slums if you want to donate or help pay rents for the residents living there.
Be careful of scammers when using the internet or a wireless services to send money or donate something for them support.

If people would pay, prices would increase and all the ones without support would lose their place to live. Donations are a big part of what Afrika made the place it is today.. It takes away self responsibility and damages the economy.

DW, we live in the times of godundme and etransfers. There is no reason you cannot obtain a certified contact and share it with viewers who want to help. There is no excuse. I want to help pay for the 57 year old woman and anyone else in that slum and you’re the only one who knows how to contact them! You need to do more to allow your viewers to HELP!
@DW could not run that, and even to farm it out requires them to pick winners and losers as to which Charity or Group to Support. However, we could come together and do it. We could do it if we put our minds to it.
There are MAAANY request for how to help .. how to help that lady bla bla....But DW may understand that some little fleeting sympathy feelings ... forgotten in an hour ... solves NOTHING of the big picture. 1000 USD collected for Agness before we go to another vide will not change her life at all.

I always say it is better to live in the countryside and do some farming and small business. Rather than to live this undignified life. Most Kenyans have ancestral land, I have never understood this mentality of crowding in city slums!
Remember people need cash to buy consumer goods as most people have been westernised in some form. In order to live exclusively off the land, one must go off the grid. People want a better life for them and their children access to medical care and western type education. They need money for these things, that's why they move to the cities looking for work to sustain this. Unfortunately when the majority are paid slave labour rates this is the consequence.

Many were dispossessed when the British took their land. Then they put the land in the name of white settlers when they left. And then in the names of the friends of white settlers when they left or in the hands of large farming companies

I feel deeply ashamed, yes I have had a hard life but this poor woman is only one year older than me and the worry shows on her face. How can these young men hurt or throw out people, this could just as easily be their parents. I am so sad for her situation

I lived in Mathare's Bonde area during a certain phase of my life. It was not the best I desired but life put me here. I really wanted to get out so hard, no support no network no nothing. Sadly enough, I saw many NGOs setting up but no major impact on livelihoods here. There's so much untapped potential among the youngins there. I hope one day I'll be able to do something meaningful for my hood. Jah Bless. Great coverage DW👊

@@KevinDeLaNoy from an insider's perspective, I am where I am because of an NGO. Although many of them are known to be cash cows for the directors . Only 20% of the cash is actual help for the dwellers, the rest is enjoyed amongst the hierarchy

Lol anyone who has lived in a slum will tell you that the landlords never "dress" up. In fact, they go to great lengths to dress even worse than their tenants and remain inconspicuous and unless you need to, you won't ever know who they are or how much they're worth.

It is a German channel. They spell Kenya in that way...same way as we spell their country Ujerumani in Kiswahili. All languages use different spellings for other countries.
